As others have said elsewhere, NADA, Edmunds and KBB are all markedly different. Based on the lowball offer I got from one dealer, I may have to drive this for another year or two. Any insight appreciated.
What were they offering you on a trade in?
Mark
Thinking of trading for a new F-150 or Expedition. Any idea on trade value? Private Party? Will I likely get more selling to a Ford dealer than a Toyota dealer, or will they both wholesale it regardless? If I keep it another 6 months or so, it will likely have 100k on it. I know it will lose more money because of an extra 10k in mileage, but will the value REALLY drop just because it says 100k?
NADA is probably the most accurate but a lot of dealers will hit you below that number knowing it's a hard car to resell.
Hi Terry!
My husband and I need to sell two vehicles. We financed both and have paid a little more than half of what we owe on each car. But we're expecting a new baby, and the Ranger has no safe spot for an infant seat, so it has to go. And the Beetle is probably too small for our needs at this point. We've already bought a used SUV from a family member that will be mine. So now we need to get down to just one car for my husband, and we really would like to get rid of the car payments!
We know we're still probably upside down on both the VW and the Ranger, but we don't know by how much. So we have a couple of questions:
1. Could we do a "reverse trade" with a dealer? For instance, could we trade the Beetle for an older, high mileage minivan worth less than the Beetle is, and end up with some cash out of the deal to help us pay off what we owe? Or would we be better off selling the Beetle on our own and then buying a used minivan for cash?
2. How do you go about the money part of selling a car privately? When do you let the buyer take the car away? If you ask for time for a check to clear, what guarantee does the buyer have that you won't just take their money and never give them the car? What do people usually do?
3. How do you sell a car that you still owe payments on, but that you'll be able to pay off once you have the buyer's cash? When/how do you sign over the title?
And of course, we want to know what my VW and my husband's truck are worth. We are most likely to try to sell them on our own if we can. But we can't afford to pay both cars off first and sell them second.
1998 Ford Ranger Limited. 100K miles (my husband commutes 90 miles a day, aaagh!), red, manual shift (aaagh again, I know), extended cab, V6, 4WD with off road package, power locks & windows, alarm system, remote keyless entry.
2001 VW New Beetle GLS. 38K miles, silver, manual shift, 2.0 L gas engine, with three added options: sunroof, premium sound package, and heated seats & mirrors. Has all the stuff standard on Beetles like power windows, alarm, etc. It's had a dent on the rocker panel fixed.
We're in Cincinnati, Ohio.
We love driving stick shifts and didn't intend to sell either of these (we love them and hate parting with them) - until we saw how much room baby stuff takes up. Arggh. Anyway, thank you so much!

Wow .. lot's of questions, but anyway .. yes, you can trade multiple vehicles, you can trade up and down ~ you can trade vehicles that have large pay-offs (if you have some cash to offset some of that negative equity) and if you sell it on your own, just touch base with your lender before hand, usually you can take the new owner direct (they can have the title ready at the bank) and "Wango Tango" you can have everything done in one svelte move ......
The Ranger, what can I say ? .. Tons of miles and it's a handshaker and depending on whether it's a 4.0 V6 or 3.0 V6 it can make all the difference ... the Ecab and the 4x4 saves this pup, trade side in and around the high $2's, low $3's .. down Retail Rd, excellent detail, superb 5 liner Ad, $5,900 *asking* and wave goodbye at the first $4,0/$5,0 and by the way, fix all the small stuff and remember, there is bunches of Rangers for sale, so park the ego ...
The Bug .? .. it's a GLS, miles are ho-hum for the year, it's got that meat clever between the seats, we have the slider and the cold package .. trade side, in and around the $8's, might see $9,0 if the rubber is from yesterday and the service was done last month ... down Retail Rd, make it look new and spend some "real money" on an Ad, $10,900 *asking* and grab the first $9,9/$10,5 and remember, there is tons of Bugs in Ohio for sale, 2nd largest drop zone in the entire East Coast .....
Good luck and let me know ....
Terry.
I bet this will sell fast .l.o.l.. I have yet to see the first one .. gheez, Isell lives down the street from you and he's only seen one in 5 years, it must have been a lost leader in the paper I'll bet ... the miles and the color is ok, I dunno I would guess in your area somewhere in the high $9's, low $10's ... where did the dealer hit you at ..?
Terry.
For less than $1500, you could add about $3k in value in the market.
Trade -- 96 Cadillac Deville base. dark blue over dark blue heated leather. no CD, no roof...just the standard stuff. 130k miles. no accidents, no paintwork. tires have 75% of tread left. looks and runs like an '01. can you give me trade and retail numbers?
Buy -- 03 Buick Century custom. white. no CD. 30k miles. certified. like new condition, from a Buick dealer.
Thanks in advance!
On the VW, they sell real well in Cincinnati. However, used buyers of VWs are kind of picky. Fix all the problems BEFORE the sale or suffer a reduced selling price. In other words, make that baby shine.
The A/C would help but I don't like mickey mouse aftermarket power locks. I've seen these and they never seem to work right for very long.
We just had a dealer fraud case in Federal court (I testified) where a guy bought a base Caravan, but wanted power locks and windows - the dealer agreed, and charged him $700-800 - he thought he was getting Dodge power windows and locks, but ended up with XYZ Stereo Shop windows and locks. He had to run around for days with plastic over his windows because the windows wouldn't go up, and the locks worked when you didn't want them to. There were a total of 23 visits, 96 days out of service in 18 months. He won, of course.

I live in Chicago, but the car was originally bought in Orlando in '97, so for an 11 yr old Honda in the rust belt, there is absolutely no rust to be found. There are a two or three little dings and a couple of bumper scratches thanks to parallel parking. It's mechanically sound and the tires are not even down to half tread yet. Just needs a good detailing which of course will be taken care of beforehand. Any thoughts...kbb, nada and edmunds are giving me headaches with their discrepancies. I was thinking if I can get a cool $1000-$1500, I'd jump on it fast. Is this reasonable?
Thanks, Jim
Dave
A buddy of mine just paid $4K for a '94 5-speed Civic coupe with 96k miles. I think he got ripped off, but, hey, whatever works.

I'm not familiar with model numbers, but I do know that Alpine makes a replica in size and twice the sound quality, don't be afraid to spend the big money on a quality "perfect" fit, no chainsaw, no it almost fits .. sounds like a great "3" so make sure it gets a Great radio .... 24k ..? there is probably 5 in the country ....
Terry.
Got you message Jim. BTW, I noticed you drive an Evo...sweet ride!
Dave

That's why I was asking if this was reasonable or not? Perhaps I shot too low, in which case others are more than welcome to chime in with their opinion stating otherwise, but being that everyone usually overvalues their trade, I thought I'd go way conservative.

We have a 1998 Hyundai Elantra that we bought in 2001. It was a good buy for us at the time, but in hindsight, it brought a lot of baggage with it. We also have a 2001 Hyundai Accent that was purchased in 2003. Now that we're trying to trim down payments and consolidate into one vehicle, I'm out doing some research.
#1 What can we realistically expect for trade-in on the vehicles?
#1a 1998 Hyundai Elantra GLS Sedan (white; 96,000 miles; standard transmission; power windows/locks; AM/FM/CD system; air conditioning; ABS; cruise control; rear spoiler; has hail damage; previous owners were smokers, roof reflects this; rear window tint is bubbling)
#1b 2001 Hyundai Accent 2 DR GS Hatchback (gray; 26,000 miles; standard transmission; power windows/locks/mirrors; AM/FM/CD system; air conditioning; ABS; rear spoiler; no interior or exterior damage)
#2 Is it possible to trade two vehicles in towards the purchase of one new/used vehicle?
------------------------------------------------------------------ - - - - ---------------
Where's some good news ..? .. we have hail damage, Tons of miles, tobacco stains and to top it all off, it's a handshaker - Ouch .. trade side, in and around the $500/$800ish zipcode ..
We have some breathing room on this one .. it's an 01 Accent, we have low miles, But it's back to the meat clever and it's a 2dr GS, the worst thing is ~ their both Hyundai's .. trade side, in and around the $2,0/$2,5ish area ...
And yes, you can trade multiple vehicles on one vehicle, it's the pay-off that becomes the deciding factor ....
I hope this helps .....
Terry.

Thanks
Need info ASAP.

Dealer trade offer of $16.5k was way off Edmunds TMV (by 15%) and NADA (by 18%).
What should I expect? Thanks.
An SI with A/C is a rare find and people call us constantly looking for these. It's the worst color it could be but people will overlook that just because it's an SI.
northwest...well...um...a DX no A/C 5 speed Accord is about as close to "distressed merchandise" as a Honda can be...sorry.
I use my A/C more in the winter than in the summer. How do you keep your windows defogged without A/C in the defrost mode?
If you do plan to hang onto it for a few more years, seriously, the cost of adding A/C may be well worth it.
Here's the bad news: miles are stiff for the year, wheels got the road rash, 4dr handshakers aren't in demand, a little scrape here and there ...
Here's the good news: new rubber, color is great for the area, Sport and Prem, X-ray vision and the service should be about a week old (?) ...
Whats all that mean: Bimmer buyers like those low milers, like the warranties even better and they don't like the missing paint action, so I'm guessing the dealer will fix it and maybe add a warranty, maybe ...
To summarize: your in Competitation with all the 20/30kers auto's with no bumps and lumps and customers are willing to pay the difference .. I'm paying the $19's for the twin to yours, *But* with 25k and they glow in the dark and bark at the moon -and- with that auto thing going on and they need -0- ... do I think $16,5 is a little light in the DC area, Yeppers, perhaps the ultra high $16's, low low low low $17's, but then again I'm not lookin' at it ...............
Don't forget to let me know ..!
Terry.
Terry.
Is that fast enough ....?
Terry.
isellhondas, I know it's a rare car with a crappy color. I actually passed a dealership when I noticed it, and within the hour, I traded my old car and bought the Si. Needless to say there was a waiting list for it, I just happened to walk on the lot first and snatched it up. I couldn't stand the color, but like you said, I overlooked it because it was an Si.
Thanks for the info.
Jim, I -e-mailed you.
It will be back up and running within 2 weeks, it had a transfer case problem ($250 fix and that's what the guy gave it back over).
1994 Chevy K3500 6.5L TD, manual trans, silverado pkg, reg cab long bed, 4x4, 158k, green/tan, pwr windows/locks, cruise, am/fm/cass, ice cold a/c, knee deep in rubber, new brakes, clutch, service up to date. I guess I'd classify it in the fair condition area, it runs good and looks, well, ok for its age.
2-door or 4-door? and, if 2, stick or auto?

While you're at it... if you don't mind...
What kind of money would a 2004 with 3,800 miles bring? Silver, 5sp (of course), monotone and power package, the air and CD is standard, no ABS.
No nicks/dents/scratches/accidents or any other goofiness.
I used $2,600 in GM Card money last Halloween to buy it when I needed a car quick, so I should be okay...
I've got a 2 mile commute, what do I need a new car for... I want an old van and a cheapo commuter...
Thanks as always -Mathias
Thanks in advance, your the man Terry.
Thanks qbrozen for helping me "fix" my post!
This time I'm hoping for cash in hand and sign the title over......no warranties expressed, implied or otherwise and NO you cannot return it, no refunds.
What a mess things are right now. If gas prices don't go down somebody is gonna be winning a bet. My Explodeder is barely getting 14 mpg (my old one easily got 20+) on the hwy, its killing me with as much as I have to drive. I regret buying it in a way, oh well, gonna stick it out for a while at least. Should have hubby's Dodge paid off this fall, have to stick it out until then.
