No, I can't afford to buy a new vehicle. Hubby wouldn't allow it anyway. I can only dream about 30+ mpg. I'm grounded and told I can't drive for the next 2 weeks. So, I'm sitting here pulling my hair out......laundry is done, nothing else to do, can't drive anywhere. Hubby said that driving for me is unnecessary and from now on one tank of gas has to last 2 weeks. I can only drive about 200 mile on a tank, so that means pretty much no driving.
As for the Chevy, what a mess, we still don't know if there is more wrong with it other than just what we have to fix right now.
Terry: You seem very familiar with a lot of cars. Opinion on a Volvo XC90 as to reliability, drivability, etc? Thinking of buying a new one to replace my 01 RX300 in the next year or so. Also Melbourne or O'Town dealer? I'm over on the Space Coast. Thanks
Today I was offered $23,000 at the Lexus dealer on the 2002 4x4 Highlander Ltd.I got them up to $23,500 but they say they can't go higher.I feel I am getting ripped off. This is a brand new, fully loaded vehicle(except nav & dvd) w/11,500 miles on it.I showed them Galves($25,500),NADA($25,775) & Edmunds($26,149).They say they'll get back to me. I think I shouldn't take less than $25,000.I'm located on Long Island, NY. Any thoughts?
You asked this question a few pages back, and a kind soul replied:
"Based on what little info I have here on yours, it's probably worth in and around the ultra high $24 range, could see a little more or a little less depending on the area of the country .... "
So your idea of $25 even isn't far off base, but neither is the dealer's offer.
I don't mean to imply that $1,500 is chump change. Bit it's easily explained by things like the color, or an odor of smoke, or dog (or whatever), or the fact that they didn't do well with the last one they tried to sell, or the cash flow situation this month... or it's a good old-fashioned attempt to "steal" your trade, or they're covering their behinds in case you try to "steal" the new car.
I wouldn't characterize it as an attempt to rip you off, though... remember, everybody needs money, but nobody *needs* to buy your car...
Might be a good candidate for retail road, it's not hard to do and you should see $26 with a little time and effort...
>>Opinion on a Volvo XC90 as to reliability, drivability, etc? Thinking of buying a new one to replace my 01 RX300 in the next year or so. <<
I have had two Volvos in my fleet with the key emphasis on the word "HAD". One problem after another on an S80 (which is a 40k vehicle).
After the second problem with the transmission, I was called into the Big Guy's office who sent me out to purchase a Lexus RX330 ***TODAY***. Absolutely NO problems in six months and the dealership in Schaumburg, IL was a true pleasure to deal with compared to the idiots at the two local Volvo dealerships.
I am not much of a Toyota fan, but that RX330 is a very sweet vehicle.
at $21,000 then maybe you would have an argument but $23500 isn't trying to rip you off IMO. The numbers on Edmunds et al are nothing more than general estimates. The numbers that count are the numbers the auction reports show as well as the dealer's historical results with any given model and those may be less than the online estimates. You could always go back in and tell them you're ready to sign provided they go $24000 on yours. The fact you are there in person again will show good faith on your part and might be enough to get them to bump another $500. Good luck.
I was at my local Volvo dealer today (Tampa, FL), and they had the following V70's on the lot:
Both are Auto, with sunroof, and both have the Certified Warranty (7 years, 100k miles).
2003 V70 2.4T - 24,xxx miles. Premium package, 17 inch wheels, leather. NO third row seat. Platinum green paint. No noticable scratches, and tires have lots of tread. Asking 30,500.
2001 V70 T5 - 47,xxx miles. Premium package, upgraded stereo, 17 inch wheels with upgraded rims, leather. YES to third row seat. Silver paint. No noticable scratches (looks very nice actually), and tires are only ankle deep in rubber in my opinion. ASking 22,900, down from 25,400 (or at least I was told...).
Wondering what you think is a fair price for each of these. Thanks Much for your opinion.
.... ** No nicks/dents/scratches/accidents or any other goofiness. ** ..
Oh thank goodness, nothing funny in the ashtray .? you probably didn't get the "ashtray" option ....... trade side, sounds like the high $11's, "maybe" the low $12's, there's only one thing holding it back .. ya know, when they first came out I thought they might not do so well, but they seem to be doing pretty strong ALL over, and I see Tons on the road and at the auctions ...
....... It's kinda hard to compare your market to the rest of the planet, but here's some food for thought ...
Reg cab 94 K3500 6.5L TD, manual trans, silverado pkg, reg cab long bed, 4x4's with miles in the *190/200k* range are doing in and around the $2,500ish range at all the auctions from Seattle to Bangor Maine, which tells me they are *probably* asking $4,900 somewhere -but-, these look like 50kers, rubber is about 15 minutes old and no click click in the 4x4 ...
Because you live in the boonies, have you thought about a "superb" detail, fix all the stuff and doing an Ebay thing with some super enviromentally perfect pics and enlarging the selling market, PLUS hitting the biggest paper in the State .. you need to do something, it's not like you live in South Beach .l.o.l......
........ I have bought and sold quite a few of these, other than a few TSB's (which every vehicle does get) it seems these have done fine up to this point .. as far as dealers are concerned, try the one with the most inventory first ...................
And thanks for the #s on the Vibe... you said "tons on the road", but this is the General's most urban/suburban vehicle.
Meaning here in Collegetown USA, I see them everywhere, and the dealer -- 1/2 mile from Campus -- had 50 on the lot last fall. $1 million in inventory.
Out in the sticks, meaning 30 minutes from the Lansing area, you hardly see any, and the three dealers in the area were stocking 4, 2, and -none- at that time. Sunbirds still selling briskly, though...
Due to kid situation I need a larger vehicle(have you ever tried to put 3 cars seats in the back of a sedan?). Any ways I know this will not come out even but I was trying to minimize the damage.
My car is a 2001 Olds Aurora 3.5 with 36K,heated leather seats, traction control, sunroof, dark green, bose stereo. Really nice shape ,tires have 1/3 tread left,a couple of stone chips .
Trading for a 2001 Dodge Durango SLT, 4.7 engine, dark blue,3rd row seats,no leather with 35k miles. Tires are brand new,and again several small stone chips(non certified).
Any help on the trade value/retail road on mine and a good offer for the dealers would be appreciated. These are in The Philly area.
Hi all. I'm looking for some pricing help on a 1997 White Nissan Altima GXE Limited with 85K in the Baltimore area. Runs great. CD, P/L, P/W, Spoiler, new exhaust and battery, tires and brakes have 15K on them and look good. Couple of scratches on the front fascia but otherwise clean on the outside. Interior has normal wear but no rips (needs a good cleaning). Carmax offered $2800 and said the car would easily pass any inspection. What do you think is a good starting price and sell price?
........ *Of Course* there is confusion, I made a mistake - it's an 02 Limited - as in 2002 ... for whatever reason I was thinking it was an 03 ~ Sorry, my mistake ..............!
If you got $23,5 for an 02, as in 2002, Then you got ALL the Peso's, All the Jingle, you got the whole "Coma Se' Yama" and the bag of chips .... at $23,500 you got it -all- my friend ....... be there before they change their mind and roll the appraisal back to the high $22's .. .. $26,0 ..? .. thats Retail money, no matter who prints it.!
.......... 03 with a mountain of miles, (rental.?) and another meat clever ..
--------------------------- I doubt it with the stick. Do the fleets even buy stick cars?? ---------------------------
dealer probably paid the high $9's low $10's for it, add a this and a that and it might hit the table close to $11,0 .... Retail Rd: $11,900 or less ~ Goodbye.!

I have a 2001 bmw x5 with a 5-speed 55,000K miles Black/Black Leather seats/wood trim Xenons Moonroof Running boards
I am trying to ballpark the value before I place an ad or see the dealer. I have seens ads from 28-36K from private parties in the area (NorCal). Any idea what might be a fair value? Is it true I will take my lumps for having the manual?
2003 Accord EX V6 8K miles NW NJ. 4 door automatic white outside, tan leather inside. This ones got all the goodies (moonroof, 6cd, power everything, trunk spoiler)except Nav. Only noticable difference from new is a few small rock chips on front. Looking to trade in on Infinit G35. What should I expect?
Doubt we'll do the Ebay thing, probably just an ad in the paper and stick the thing on the lemon lot at Ft. Wainwright. Figure some GI will stick $3500/$4k in my hand and then lift the booger, put big tires on it and go off through the mud. Chevys are definatly popular up here, even the old ones. Unfortunatly the 6.5L TD KILLS this one.
On this one I think I'd even take a car, 4wheeler, guns, or just about anything else for that matter in trade for it.
I have had serious thoughts about keeping it, but its too much of a sore subject.
1988 Buick LeSabre (Maroon interior/exterior) - Custom sedan 4D - V6 3.8L engine - A/T - Front wheel drive - 110,000 miles - A/C - Power steering, windows, locks, drivers seat - Tilt steering wheel - Cassette stereo
Kelley Blue Book value of this trade-in is $475, what kind of leeway would I have to look for more...at least the car is worth way more than that to me. Excellent exterior except one spot of rust near front drivers side door lock. Please let me know!! THANKS!!
I don't know about Terry, but I'm driving one now with 83K miles and no major problems (and no warning lights). Yeah, I've had to fix a few things, but nothing even close to the tranny recall on our HOnda Pilot (hehe.. sorry. had to throw that jab in there. ).

I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla DX (a/c, 5-speed, dark green, power windows and locks, AM/FM cassette) with 99K miles on it and I want to trade it in to buy a new Sienna. What would be a "reasonable" trade-in price for this car? And if I was to sell it to Carmax, how much should I sell it for? Thank you so much in advance.
My husband and I used to transport cars for a large auto dealer and had the opportunity to drive several BMW's of varying model/year/trim. We never met a BMW that didn't have some type of warning light on. Kinda took the luster off of the BMW 540i 6-speed he had been lusting after forever.
This isn't a great trade vehicle, actually, since no dealer is going to want it on their lot (not really a dealer sale vehicle, given the age and miles). I'd sell this one privately - Terry can give you an idea of what you can expect to get.

2004 Honda Accord EX-L sedan 15,000 miles Silver exterior/black leather guts 2.4L 4 cylinder w/ automatic tranny Roof, leather, power seat, keyless, cd changer Rear spoiler, fog lights Car is immaculate .. could go back into the showroom and pass for new again if not for the odometer reading.

It is worth about $250 on trade, you have rust. Without the rust, $500 is on the money.
You will be much better off selling it out yourself. If it runs reliable and needs nothing (i.e everything works including a/c), even in the rough body condition, go a little high $1500-$2000 on the asking side and send if packing for the first cash offer over $1000.
That is the kind of car that would get the rust spots fixed ($300 at a cut rate shop) and hit the BuyHerePayHere lot at $3000. There is a good market for those at $3000, but they have to be nice.
What do you think it is worth, be honest? Given the miles and age an accurate description is paramount to getting an accurate guesstimate.
99K and 5 speed going against it, Toyota Corolla going for it. $2500 trade side depending on condition. Retail side, ask $4500 and send it home $3,800ish. Better be deep in rubber, clean, needs no maintenance or repairs though.
What do you think? Duh!!! "I have a car that has some damage and I want to know what it is worth." You might as well have left of the make and model given the total lack of (now you know the rest of the story).
Hi, I posted earlier this week about my 1987 Ford T-Bird (138,000 miles, original owner), which we're planning to either sell ourselves or trade in when we go in to purcahse our Mazda MPV tomorrow.
I haven't discussed trading in with the dealer yet, because I wanted to first settle on a price for the car, which we did tonight. I'm wondering since the car is so old, will the dealer refuse to even negotiate a trade-in? I'm thinking since Mazda is affiliated with Ford, it might be more likely the dealer will negotiate for it. And to be honest, I'd love to be rid of it tomorrow. But since I haven't done this before, I'd love some opinions on the matter. Thanks!
Killer thing is, there are more BHPH lots in some of these towns than franchise dealer lots. One K'ville town (pop. 30,000) here has a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Caddy/GM/Chevy dealer with a combined inventory of around 200 cars. While the smallest of the 5 BHPH lots has more than either of the two franchise dealers.
Basically, yes. Tell us something good about the car, looks and drives like a 2000 with no rust, no problems, good interior. Or does it look like a 15 year old Ford with 133K on the ticker and a little rust termite action going on.
Sometimes, you will get more driving the car to a salvage yard than trying to trade in an older car. The dealer has labor and disposal costs involved when they take in older cars that they cannot even unload at the auction.
....... These Aurora's are still pretty strong in the market, 35k, we have the cold package, slider, Bozo sound, color is kinda eh' and the tires sound a little weak .. trade side, in and around the high $10's, low $11's, might "could" see the mid $11's if it's "jam-up" ...
The Do ghe' .. 4WD Right ...??!!?? .. they want an even trade ..? .. sounds like a great deal to me, it's a "your vehicle" and a $3,500 deal .. am I missing something here, wrong year, wrong vehicle, 2wd .. aahh, I can't take the pressure ..!
Not sure what you mean by "drives like a 2000" -- it does drive well, has been garaged most of its life, so there's no rust. It's black, has power windows and doors, locks, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, power driver's seat. However...there is an electrical short that causes the digital speedometer to not display at times and yeah, the interior is a little scruffy. So I guess I'll see what happens and if we have to, I guess we'll drive it back with us.
Could be worse......we have a 94 Chevy that we tried to trade in last fall, were offered $1k for it (its 4WD and a diesel, but shows its age/miles). Anyway, long story short, we had to yank it out of the deal cause we weren't sure it would make the 300 mile trip to the dealer at that time. The dealer was so relieved, lol, they were only taking it as a courtesy.
We sold the truck......got it back......going to fix it and make it go away for good this time.......or make a flower planter out of it.
........ Sometimes it's more expensive to take certain vehicles on trade .. older high mileage vehicles come to mind, maybe yours ...
This particular one might be one of them, it sounds like a $200/$300 vehicle trade side .. dealer takes it on trade, runs it thru the auction and it will cost him $125 auction fee, $50/$75 for a driver, $50 bucks for a clean and detail, he can show you anything you like on paper, it's still a $250 driver ... whats the point.? .. sell it on your own ......................
Thanks for the advice guys! Yeah, Kelly Blue Book has it at $375. If we get $300, that'll be enough for me. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I'm pregnant and due in 2 months, so I want to definitely be rid of it by my due date LOL Thanks again.

Allow me to translate:
There are people willing to pay near $3,000 for a clean car of this kind, but none of them actually HAVE $3,000.
Just trying to help -Mathias
99K and 5 speed going against it, Toyota Corolla going for it.
$2500 trade side depending on condition. Retail side, ask $4500 and send it home $3,800ish. Better be deep in rubber, clean, needs no maintenance or repairs though.
It does depend on the truck.
Ink is cheap. Keystrokes are cheaper.
Please turn off the caps and tell us all about your truck and describe the "damage".
Thank you. -m
Sometimes, you will get more driving the car to a salvage yard than trying to trade in an older car. The dealer has labor and disposal costs involved when they take in older cars that they cannot even unload at the auction.

We sold the truck......got it back......going to fix it and make it go away for good this time.......or make a flower planter out of it.
