    Sure....blame it on the husband.....
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
    Well, my wife blames me for everything, even if I'm not sure what it is half the time.

    I actually don't think my wife would ever buy a new car if I didn't either push the issue, or do all the work. On her own, she would keep her old car for fear of going out to buy one.

    Should I get inspection prior to trading in?

    Forget about trading it in. If it runs good, clean it up inside and out. Ask $3500 and take the best cash offer. The rust is going to hurt you a lot more on trade then selling it out yourself. You should see $2500 range relatively easy maybe touching $3000 if the planets are lined up your way the day someone looks at the car.

    It has three things going for it. 1. Honda Civic 2. Automatic 3. Miles are not sky high. The miles will help compensate for the little rust selling it yourself. Good college kid car or second driver for fuel economy.

    Doubtful with the rust you will see anything over $1000 ACV for it on trade.

    hi,

    i have a...

    •1995 Honda Prelude Si
    •220,000 miles
    •Black with dark gray interior
    •Manual transmission
    •6-month-old tires
    •Sliding sunroof
    •No rear spoiler
    •A/C
    •A Sony single CD player (supports MP3s)
    •A 10-disc Sony CD changer
    •A 12-inch Subwoofer in a box in the trunk (I forget the brand off the top of my head)
    •A Razo carbon-fiber shift knob
    •Razo racing pedals
    •A basketball-sized dent on the right rear quarter-panel, a tear in the rear bumper, and a dented up taillight mount (so a new taillight won't fit on) all from an accident a couple of years ago (the repair estimate was for approx. $5,000).
    •I live in the Orange County area of Southern California

    can anyone give me an estimated trade-in value? i want to get a subaru wrx sedan, but am not sure if i'll get a new or used one. i can give more details, if necessary. thanks!
  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
    I am not a dealer and don't even play one on edmunds, but a car with 220,000 miles and you want to trade it in ? Not to discourage you, but it is an almost impossible feat. But I am sure you'll get plenty of input from the regulars here on your post.

    Good luck on this one.
  • hapa17hapa17 Member Posts: 4
    that's cool. if it's recommended to sell it instead, i'll take everyone's recommendation on a fair selling price, if that's cool. the thing that's a real obstacle for me is the body damage. i've seen the estimated values from various sites, but am not sure if my car would be considered "fair" or "poor" or what. i could even try linking people to a couple of photos of the damage, if that'd help.
  • hapa17hapa17 Member Posts: 4
    ok...here are a couple of links to pics of the damage i took a couple of years ago. i've also figured since then how to wedge that hanging bumper so it doesn't dangle like that. (also, i apologize for the weird site it's posted on, but that's the only place i know to post pics)

    Of course he did point out after we loaded the Explorer for the fishing trip that we were incredibly short on room. I love my Explorer, but hubby is right, its too dang small. He likes real trucks and wants to have 2 total. The Chevy will be ready on Monday.......looks like $400 this time. I doubt we will keep it for fear of *what next?*.

    We'll see, going to look at the Nissan today, could be worse, I could be looking at another Ford!!

    >>>BTW, I personally have a soft spot for the S90s. Last of the "real" Volvos...<<<

    You took the words out of my mouth! Other than the steering being a little overboosted, it's a really nice RWD Euro car. Drives much better than the S80 that replaced it.

    Hi Terry,

    I don't know if you overlooked this or if this is an indication of the zero level of interest my car generates. But its got to be worth something right? Will someone trade it for a piece of shiny metal? It does not even have to be real money. :)

    I've got a 2002 Mazda B4000 4x4 with the 5sp automatic and 43,000 miles. These came pretty well loaded, cruise, air, am/fm cd, keyless with power locks and windows and mirrors. I've got the extended cab with 4 doors, convenience package (sliding rear window, bed liner and bed extender). Its got aluminum wheels and a frame mounted trailer receiver hitch. I've added a Roll & Lock bed cover ($800 +/- new). Truck is in pretty good condition overall. It's a black truck and I've got some scratches from tree limbs but they have been pretty well buffed out and are hard to see. Otherwise, the truck has never been damaged. What do you think I can get on a trade? Private party sale? Don't worry, I'm not expecting a lot. At least a couple of hundred dollars maybe? Or should I just leave it somewhere with the keys in it and the engine running? Actually, I tried that once, but Mazda / Ford Ranger trucks are held in such low esteem that no one even put out the effort to vandalize it much less steal it.

    Thanks, George.

    I wish you luck in selling your car. With that kind of mileage, and looking at the photos showing major damage, perhaps you could double the resale value by filling up the gas tank!

    Sorry, but I think it is toast. What about donating it to a school and letting them fix it up for experience...you may also get some kind of charitable donation receipt.

    Terry,

    I have found the following and wondering what you think:

    00 Chrysler 300M, steel blue. No roof, 113000 mi. Northeast Wisconsin. It's been on this lot at least a month, since I spotted it--who knows how long it's really been there.

    I have an 01 Pontiac Sunfire SE 2dr, 36500 mi, A/C, tilt, CD, roof, Traction, ABS. Would like to flip that to him and trying to figure how much cash, if any, I would have to throw in.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
    as much as I like Honda products and Preludes especially, has NO retail value at all. It doesn't even having "parting out" value given the 220,000 miles.

    If it had 80-100k miles, you could easily sell the engine and transmission to someone doing a Civic engine swap.

    Donate it - you've certainly use up any value the car had left, plus $5k worth of damage kills the value as a shell or rebuild car.

    and all my cars are modified, but if you're going to trade a car at a dealership, return it to stock - it has ZERO value with all the bolts on and cool wheels.

    Private party? That's a different story - get some kid with daddy's checkbook all excited, and you're done.
  • dbgindydbgindy Member Posts: 351
    You're a sick man and that's why we like you.... :-)

  • atlgaxtatlgaxt Member Posts: 501
    Have you looked at taking it to a small body shop? Without spending the $5k to get your Prelude fixed, for a couple hundred bucks someone might be able to get your car back together enough so that it is a little more presentable for a private party sale. I know that you have 220,000 miles, but Hondas are held in good esteem (unlike my Mazda truck - sigh) and Preludes are pretty cool and not all that common, so some kid might be willing to fork over some cash for it if it was a little more presentable. You might be surprised.

    Also - I would be real careful about the donating thing and would not try to donate it for any more than you can realistically sell it for. The IRS is catching on that people have been donating cars at inflated prices that they could not otherwise trade or sell their cars for. That is called tax fraud and you don't want to mess with the IRS, as they definitely do not have a sense of humor.

    I'm thinking it's just about time to get a new car, but calculating the value of my current vehicle is daunting. I've run it through Edmunds, KBB.com etc, but get stuck on the condition evaluation. Any thoughts on this?

      * 1996 Toyota Corolla DX Wagon
      * 176,000 Miles (!)
      * All regular maintenance
      * Minor rust starting in right rear wheel well
      * Kenwood AM/FM/CD/MP3 w/ Aux input
      * Boston Acoustic Speakers
      * New Tires
      * Roof rack
      * Needs new rear struts
      * Needs new timing belt
    Runs great though, very reliable. Looks nice, just the usual New England hood chips from sanding.

    But, the car was stolen a few years ago, carjacked at gunpoint (crazy story). It was recovered with minor damage, other than loss of stereo, speakers. How will this affect the sale price?

    Thanks in advance for any advice,
    Tom
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
    Given the description, it would be rated as poor: needs significant repairs or maintenance to bring it up to retail condition and has significant body damage/rust.

    To get an accurate value you are going to have to shop it around. There is no real way on a car in that kind of condition with those miles without actually looking at it or driving it. I could say maybe $200, but if the dealer says $100, that is 50% off.

    You might get lucky and retail it out yourself for $500. The needed maintenance/repairs and rust along with the miles are flat out killing it. The car owes you nothing, you have used it up well.

    I'm thinking the stereo and new tires are worth more than the car.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
    These have the non-interference engine, right? Given the rust, and the miles, and the car's approximate value, I'd say the timing belt won't be replaced until it snaps.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    To me, it sounds like a classic, "ask 1900, take what you can get" kind of car. BTW, forget the books and web sites on this kind of car.

    Just try and find *any* Corolla wagon. They were pricey when new and are sought-after used.

    Clearly, we're not looking at a cream puff here, but "a little" rust near the wheel wells isn't too big a deal in this price range, and it IS a Corolla with new tires. So what it's got 176k... I sold a '93 LE with 180k in Jan03, and it's still running, 30k or so later. Running well, mind you. It just needs the right kind of buyer, and I'll bet someone will put ~$1,500 in the car *IF* it runs and drives well *NOW*.

    Don't much matter if it's a stick or auto; a stick will take a little more time to find the buyer.

    Toyotas in "ok" shape always sell if one is flexible on price. For $500, I'll take it and any similar ones you've got.

    *EDIT* corvette, you're right on with the t-belt. Toy's are almost all non-interference, in contrast to Hondas. Wouldn't touch it.

    What's with all the jalopies lately? We've got a Prelude that was hit by a meteorite, a sandblasted Corolla beginning its conversion to iron oxide, and let's not forget Jolie's two Chevrolets...

    Ok here's one for ya Ter...

    White/gray cloth
    Good condition inside out
    80K miles
    CD aftermarket stereo
    60% tires on Pirellis
    all maintenance up to date; brakes etc.
    cold a/c
    roof rack
    auto tranny
    power wind/locks
    keyless entry and tint
    no slider, no nerf bars, no alloys
    minor accident ~3yrs ago in rear, dealer repaired
    located in beautiful San Antonio, Texas

    Overall it's been a great truck for my sister. totally trouble free.

    What could they expect selling it themselves or as a trade in???

    Thanks a bunch!

    You know.. I feel kind of the same way about the Prelude as Mathias does about the Corolla. I know, I know... tons of miles and that little $5K dent, but evidently it is still road worthy, and a highly desirable car for the tuner set... If it drives like it might last 10K-20K more miles, I bet you could pull $1200-$2K out of it. I see '90 Civics with more miles than you can count and looking like a tour of Iraq would be a step up, and they are bringing $500-$700.

    ....... If this was a rusty vehicle in Tampa you might not see much, but your in New England ... Steine13 is right on the money.

                  This little Wagon needs to go down Retail Rd -IF- it will clean up (dealer will "maybe" put a nick in it, then will clean it up and send off to an auction and see $1,200+) so a dealer really doesn't want it, and won't put any "real money" in it ... Super detail, great Ad $1,900 *asking* and do the pee pee dance at $1,2/$1,500, I bet it won't last long .. Corolla wagons are harder to find that 4x4 Tacomas with an automatic.

                  Let us know how it goes ..

    Might actually pull the trigger this time...I'm like the anti-akangl.
    I'm gonna be taking in the 740 to my Volvo guy for a cost/benefit analysis on keeping it; I suspect I know the answer (it's gonna cost more to fix the several things it needs than to just dump it off and start with another vehicle, I think.) The trip to the mechanic is for Mrs. Lance's benefit; apparently car payments must be against her religion or something. I dunno. I'll keep ya posted. Thanks for your patience.

    I have a 1999 Grand Prix White SE 4-door.
    87,000 miles, 3800 V6, BOSE CD stereo, steering wheel radio controls, spoiler, power seat, looks and drives like new, in the Charlottesville, VA area
    Any idea to trade-in and retail value?
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

             ===== Do I have any idea's? of course I do, but my psychiatrist says I shouldn't think those thoughts .....

                    99 Prix SE in Verginnie, we have the Bozo sound, 88k, 4dr, color is good anywhere, 3800, seat and spoiler .... IF ~ the service is 100%, waaaay deep in rubber, no Chernobyl interior, no razor blade car washes and no repaint .. then trade side, in and around the mid to high $3's, "might" see a miracle and get a dealer to wander to the $4 side .. down Retail Rd, superlative detail, extrodinary 5 liner Ad, finish any service $5,900 *asking* and wave goodbye at the first $4,9/$5,5 - the miles aren't going to be your friend here ..

                      Good luck ....

    Terry,

    I am looking at a 2002 Chevrolet Prizm Sedan 4D, not many options, except for AC and a CD player.

     -- 3 spd Auto
     -- 32700 miles.

    I checked the car fax and found the following information. It has been on the dealer lots for a long long time

    06/25/2003 30,500 Dlr Inventory.Offered for Sale

    10/06/2003 Dlr Inventory. Offered for Sale

    02/13/2004 30,707 Auto Auction Sold at auction

    03/03/2004 31,676 Auto Auction Sold at auction

    I think this vehicle has been at the current dealer dealer since March.

    His original listed price was $7999 then he put a sale on it for $6999. Currently he is offering it at $6500. I have driven it and the car does seems to be working well. I am offering him $6000. Should I just take it for $6500?

    Thank you for your time and advice.

    Thinking about buying this and flipping it immediately. In the land of mike vick, black outside,gray cloth inside, 2 wheel drive, tires 40 %gone, paint lookin 2005 good, no m-80 explosions inside,third seat,dual air. Car is in great shape.....now the kicker...........66,000 miles, yes that is 66,000 on the clicker. what would this do at the auction and I know you can buy a new one for around 24 k so what would be a good asking price private party. thanks dweller oh yeah, he is asking 19,900 for it.

    We finally pulled a trigger......not sure if the gun was pointed at us or not.

    Bought a 2004 Nissan Titan SE last night. Paid $33k ($35k MSRP), they gave $20k for the Explorer (I'm suspecting an overallowance, but didn't question). The BEST part is they took the Chevy too. Sent a guy over to the repair shop to appraise it, course the truck is sitting in pieces waiting to be fixed Monday. They gave $3k for it (could have given less and we would have been happy, anything to not have to deal with that truck again). We still have to pay its repair bill Monday, but the dealership will go pick it up. With the rebate on the Titan ($1k) and our $1k cash down payment, we rolled no neg which was a nice feeling.

    We've put about 350 miles on the Titan since last night........two trips to town. Filled it up and the gas mileage was 16.7 mpg, which was MUCH better than the Explorer's 14.5 mpg that it was getting most of the time I owned it.

    The Titan is wonderful, we really like it. Its perfect, can throw the muddy bikes in the back, hubby's saw, the dog, whatever and I'm not worried about staining carpet. Next purchase will be the travel trailer in the spring.

    Now off to get ready to go fishing for king salmon.

    I have a 2000 audi a4 quattro with the following:
    Silver
    Quattro
    5 speed
    Cold weather package (heated seats
    convenience package (sunroof
    120,000 miles
    clean title
    good tires
    body and interior in good condition

    What is a reasonable trade in value?
    What is a reasonable private sale value?
    Would I have a higher trade in value if I were trade it in at a audi dealer?

    Thanks for all your input!

    I just checked the carfax and this was a lease vehicle which was auctioned off on 03/31/2004. Showed up in the dealer inventory on 6/01/2004. **

              ==== It just came off lease and he bought it at the auction, no mystery there, thats where most vehicles come from.

                   CPO .? if it's clean, deep round things, no I was talking with the Subaru dealer and I missed the repaint on the whole left side .. then he probably paid in and around the $21ish area, so after a this and that he might have the low low low $22's in it .. $25,495 .? he's not trying to hurt anyone as long as you don't want some whacko number for your trade, I think $23,9/$24,5 should make you both happy ...

    ....... This will interesting .. this should be better than any comparo by Edmunds, Car & Driver, Motor Trend, etc ... Aka and Alaska in a Titan in the "real world", none of this "we drove down the curvy hills to Malibu" stuff ....

                      Good luck ...... :)
