.......... 01 XC70 with short miles and the color is good anywhere ...

These are nice vehicles, well built, run forever and safe .. if it's a clean one, no K-Mart kisses, no drive-by shootings, deep rubber ... then it's a $21/$22ish vehicle ALL day long on a trade, probably a little more on the right day ... $22,500 ..? thats a Great price, that's what I pay for em', so take advantage of it ......

                     I hope this helps ....

    Terry,

Seeking valuation thoughts on the following in South Florida:

    2000 BMW Z3/2.3L/5 spd/conv (manual)
    48k miles
Gun metal grey metallic/black top/black leather int
    Stereo with cassette
Assume good condition - clean and mark-free inside and out
Mix and match tires appx half worn down
    NOT CPO

It's been on the BMW dealer's lot for 3 weeks.

    As always, appreciate your expertise.

    "black leather int"

Oh, goodness. I've got one in a sedan in Iowa. I can only imagine the pain a black leather interior would cause in a convertible in South Florida.

    Terry, whaddya think of these:

02 Camry SE, 20K, gray with leather interior (either black or gray, can't see for sure from photo on website), slider, auto in Orlando. Dealer is asking 18.2 certified.

The other is an 04 Accord EX V6 non-navi, 7,500, redondo red, naturally with the gray leather, slider and auto. Also has a spoiler, also in Orlando. Asking price is 23.5.

Is the money about right, and which do you think is the better deal long term (I'll probably keep it seven or eight years)?

    ** I have a 2000 audi a4 quattro with the following:
    Silver
    Quattro
    5 speed
    Cold weather package (heated seats
    convenience package (sunroof
    120,000 miles
    clean title
    good tires
body and interior in good condition
What is a reasonable trade in value?
What is a reasonable private sale value?
Would I have a higher trade in value if I were trade it in at a audi dealer?
Thanks for all your input! **

               ===== 1.8 Right.?

Oooh, we have a ton of miles going on here-no help, we have a handshaker-no help, slider, cold pack, clean paper, tires are ok and you say it's in good condition (no paint, no super glue, right.?) ... if it's a nice one, service is 110%, then trade side in and around the mid to high $7's, "might" "maybe" see the low low low low low $8's if it looks-feels-drives like 50k, if it needs stuff start deducting .... 120k down Retail Rd is a tuffy for an Audi, but if all the service is yesterday, all the history looks good, great Ad, then $9,900 *asking* and off it goes for the first $8,9/$9,5 - the miles are Killin' ya ..!

2001 Pathy SE by oac Jun 10, 2004 (1:30 pm)
Hi Terry:A friend of mine has a 2001 Pathfinder SE and wants to trade it in for a 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD due to impending increased family needs. So what would he expect to get, and more importantly what should he be expecting in terms of difference b/w his trade-in and his purchase price ?
    To trade-in:
    2001 Pathfinder LE
    70K big miles
    Grey/charcoal cloth interior
    Auto
New sneakers (less than 10K miles new)
invasion of the fries (2 kids ages 3 and 6)
    no visible dings
    looks and drives like a 2003 :)
    So Cal located (San Diego)

                      =========== I probably missed it - 2WD or a 4WD ..??

    Terry:
Asked you for the trade info back on April 7th....finally traded last wed. They gave me $16,500 for the 02 accord...with 24,688 miles. I traded for a 2001 Mercedes E430 with 26800 miles, moonroof, sport package, 6cd changer, hands free cellular phone, brand new Goodyear RS-A tires in Desert Silver (beige)/tan leather. Car is in mint condition....inside is spotless...was traded in on a cadillac or Hummer....purchased for $32,800....so a difference of 16,300....I think I did well...Edmunds TMV trade in value on the MB was 33,693. Let me know what you think of the deal...thanks again for your help...had one dealer lowball me saying the honda was only worth $13,800
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    .......... Thanks for the update.!

01 Benz E430 (nice vehicle) with 27k, slider (of course), sport pack, new RS-A sneakers and the right color in and out for the area, sounds like a nice one ...

$16,300 difference .? .. you did Real good on this deal, dealer might have had the $29ish figure in the Benz, so he didn't make a whole lot of money on a beautiful vehicle, you stuck him with the coupe and you saved $800+ on the taxes, Yep you did fine.!

It's a nice driver, enjoy it.!

    ..... ** It's been on the BMW dealer's lot for 3 weeks **

I don't doubt that: it's Gun metal grey metallic/black top/black leather int .. it's 95+ degree's here and I'm sweating bullets, I wouldn't "dare" sit in those seats unless I called my Plastic surgeon and 911 first ... we have 48k, mismatched tires, no CPO, so I question the service and the history ..

Dealer might have paid the high $13's low $14's for it ~ if it was a clean light color one, it would be worth the high $15's low/mid $16's .... the color and the miles are a killer .. whats he asking .?

                             Terry.
  • bdevil81bdevil81 Member Posts: 22
Asking $22.9 - it was so far off my value that I didn't waste his time trying to work the price. I agree with you and others on the dark colors, and was concerned it didn't pass CPO standards, but I wanted to calibrate the pricing.

By the way, as of last night, it appears to have been sold.

Thanks for the guidance, this is great preparation when the right one comes along.

........ Depending on the options on the SE (sounds like a 4 banger, which is fine) the miles are low ..... Stop.!

I had to stop and think a minute before I posted this, based on what you just said: ~~ ** and which do you think is the better deal long term (I'll probably keep it seven or eight years)? **

If you "really" feel your going to keep the vehicle long term and thats your history, then it really doesn't mean a hill of beans which one you pick, it's gotta be the one you "Really" like, the one that makes "you" feel the most comfortable, not your neighbor, not your g/f, not the nut cases over at News and Views, but the one that gives .. *-YOU-* .. that Warm and Fuzzy feelin' .. remember ~ your paying for it, not your Fraternity brother or the guy you play golf with 3 times a year ...

Both of these are nice vehicles, so your kinda comparing apples to apples and both will run for a loooong time .. so it will depend on how you sit in the seat, do you like the color, how you feel when you make a sharp left turn and what a few miles of International Dr. will do and what the lumps and bumps of Ocala might feel like and lets not forget a little shot down the B-Line Express .. drop off your license (whatever) and put some miles on both (without the salesman) then you can find out which one you will prefer, which trunk, which dash, hows the cupholders and whats going on with the head and legroom .. remember ~ your paying for it, not the guy at the corner Deli that has an opinion on everything and knows nothing ........... :)

As far as price is concerned, you should be able to buy the SE for "around" the $17's (depending on the options) and you should be able to grab the EX for "around" the tall $22's ....

The point is, money becomes a mute point if you don't like what your paying for .. Like I always say: always buy and drive what You like ....

Let me know how it goes ...

                               Terry :^}

Terry - I've been snooping around on Edmunds for a while but am new to this forum - what a valuable service! Here's my situation - I'm looking to buy a new/slightly used '04 Tahoe Z71 and trade in my Pathfinder.

    1997 SE
    84K miles
    5 spd
    4WD
    beige ext/cloth int
    BFG's in good condition
    never wrecked
I've taken great care of it mechanically, but it has a few dings on the doors and things like that.

As you can tell, this will be quite a step up and I know I'm going to get killed on the trade in! Any insight as to what is reasonable, with the understanding that I won't get KBB?

This van has all the options, what was then a factory package called Astro Max, which included rear air, rear dutch doors, tinted glass, chrome wheels. The van has 95k miles on it. No rust, chrome wheels look good, no problem, no fluid leaks, all in good running/working condition. Silver with chrome wheels. I was hoping for 6.5k for a trade in. What's the consensus?

I have serious doubts of Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds and TMV. I have a 2003 Jaguar 3.0 S in very desireable Titanium Silver. Except for NAV, this car is loaded with every option Jaguar makes. Car has 15k miles looks like it came off the line yesterday. Best T.I. offered to me by dealers is $27-$27.5 and I know they will sell this between $36-$39k. They're asking this much for cars with more miles than mine and a lot less equipment too. Whether I am looking to purchase a new S or a Mercedes, this is all they will go. Why do dealers do this?

    why do dealers do what?

offer to spend what they are willing to pay for a car? because they are businesspeople...thats why.

chances are, they offer that based on what they bring at auction.

your problem isnt with the dealers...your problem is that private individuals will pay so much for them. why do buyers do that?
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
ok, calm down a bit.... First, we'll let Terry throw a price out for the Jag to see if they are really lowballing you... In the mean time, lets discuss a few things.

"They're asking this much for cars with more miles than mine and a lot less equipment too"

Your right, they (not sure who here) may be asking that much... ASKING... is the key word. Would you walk in and pay asking price? They can 'ask' what they want, what someone will pay is a different story.. if they pay that much, well, that's what the buyer is willing to pay for it.

Next, you've got to understand where a dealer is coming from... if he can visit an auction next week, pick up the twin to your car (same thing, similar options, etc..) for $27ish range, etc... why would you expect him to pay significantly more than that to buy yours? Just plain business...

As for KBB, Edmunds, etc... read back a few posts where I show a link to an explanation on the differences between 'the books'... they are books/guides, they won't write a check for your car.... here is the link-

...... Sounds like a nice vehicle .. 2003 Jaguar 3.0 S in very desirable Titanium Silver. Except for NAV, this car is loaded with every option Jaguar makes. Car has 15k miles looks like it came off the line yesterday ..

If this is all true: no repaints, no K-Mart collisions, just a "Stand Tall" S-type V6 with all the bells and whistles, then the $27/$27,5 is right on the button .. might "maybe" get a dealer to wander up to $28,0 but that would be the EOW (End Of The World) ...

It's not that these are bad vehicles, it's just another high end Luxomatic and these do depreciate and the V8 4.2's seem to do "alot" better than the V6's .. could be worse, you could have spent $75,000 big ones on a 02 745Li and be lookin' down the barrel of $47/$48 ~ Yikes.!

The books are kinda like reading the Bible, some of it is true and some of it makes for some interesting reading, these are guides, ballparks, Zipcodes of the "real world" .... on most of your high end Luxomatics like Land Rover, Bimmer, Benz they show a big figure in the "book" and like Butchbr73 has just mentioned, these are *asking* prices, just like when you read one of these info sources you want to use the *Big number* for your trade, thats why dealers use the Big number on their vehicles to show you a "over allowance" .. it's just business.

If you feel uncomfortable with the trade figures, then you need to get a super duper detail, a glorious 5 liner Ad in the biggest paper in your area and send that puppy down Retail Rd with all the history and all the paperwork ~ $33,900 *asking* and grab the first $31,9/$32,9, money talks and $&%#s walks .. that price range is a very competitive market, so Park the ego and grab the cash ...

Remember ~ you can be a Lion and you can be a Tiger ~ but never be a Pig ................. ;)

Good luck and may the force be with you .. and don't forget to let me know what happens .!

Just looked up the Edmunds TMV of my trade - a Mitsubishi Montero Sport - but I'm interested in whether that is a true real-world value. Here are the details:

    - 2001 Montero Sport XLS 2WD
    - Dark Blue/Gold exterior, Tan cloth interior
    - 31,707 miles
    - Infinity audio
    - Power sunroof
    - Running boards
    - Excellent mechanical condition
    - Super clean interior
    - A few small dings
    - Original tires
    - About 1.5 months left on the warranty (or 4,300 miles)

Trading for an '04 Odyssey. Any guidance would be appreciated.

We'll be moving to Florida soon and I was thinking of possibly selling the 'Trig before we go. We figure everything we need to carry with us will fit in the wife's Camry and we can pick up a replacement for the Olds when we reach our new home (maybe another Camry or the '05 Mustang).

Just trying to see what my car would be worth - I don't really agree with the KBB figures, but I'm predudiced, I guess.

1998 Intrigue base (built 8/98), SilverMist, grey cloth, spoiler, in-glass antenna (was an option on the 98s according to the brochures, but I've never seen one with an antenna mast!), AM/FM/Cassette/CD (single disc), replaced the original Goodyear Eagle LS tires last Summer with Yokohama AVID Touring. 37,9XX miles. Owned since new. Car is in #9 condition - very few door dings (this is New York City, after all!).

Am I out of line looking for $5500? Trade-in is pegged around $3400 or so and retail $6000.

If I drive it to Florida, I may sell it to my father so he can finally retire his 84 Cutlass 4-door that has who-knows-how-many miles over 100,000! Maybe my mother's 84 Fifth Avenue with 150,000+ can go....

Of course Dad's price would be more or less the trade-in value.... Never piss off your parents!

    Thanks for any enlightening responses.

I guess it's time for me to get rid of my car. Its a 1999 VW Passat GLS 1.8T.

Satin Silver outside/ Black leather inside
    29,755 miles
    Tiptronic
    Leather
    Sunroof
    CD Changer
    Alloy Wheels

It's super clean. No dents or dings, no scratches. Still smells new.

I would like to see how it will do at trade in and retail road.

    It's in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

    Hi Terry,

We're trying to sell our 2001 Honda Civic EX sedan with auto and side airbags. It's silver with gray interior and has 30,600 miles. The car is in good shape except for a couple of dings and scratches. It has new front brake pads and just had the 30k service done. We're located in northern California (SF Bay Area).

What should we ask for with a private-party sale? What should our bottom-line be? A dealer offered $9500 a few months ago. We're hoping to do better if we sell it on our own. Appreciate your help!

    ....... Slaaaaap - you missed the V6 part ..?!?

If it's a "V6 SE" with 20k, and it's nice (color might be a little on the dark side) .. then $18 is a Great price, I don't think you will find one for much less with a CPO unless it's a UFO ....

    80K miles
    CD aftermarket stereo
    60% tires on Pirellis
all maintenance up to date; brakes etc.
    cold a/c
    roof rack
    auto tranny
    power wind/locks
    keyless entry and tint
no slider, no nerf bars, no alloys
minor accident ~3yrs ago in rear, dealer repaired
located in beautiful San Antonio, Texas

Overall it's been a great truck for my sister. totally trouble free.

Yeah, well thats what I told the Judge and I still got 90 days and community service .........

But anyway, welcome to RWTIV's .. the miles aren't too bad for year, it's an SE 4wd, color is good, tires seem deep and we have that funny thing that you have to move all around between the seats to make it go ... if we have no click-click in the 4wd, service is 110%, no Jack the Ripper interior and it "looks-drives-feels" like a 40k vehicle .. then trade side, in and around the the tall $4's, low $5's - the El Manualo' tranny is hanging you up ...... give me a "Full" description on the Z71 and I will tell where you stand.

Let me know which way the wind blows ........

Terry: Many thanks for the reply and I agree with the high 4's low 5's. As for the Z71, I'm not into too many bells and whistles. All I really care about is the Silver exterior, probably no third row seat (heard those are a pain to remove if you need the space?), a sunroof, and XM Satellite radio. I really don't want the DVD and all of that. I can't decide if I should try to find a used '04 with 10K miles or so, or go for the new one. It seems that you can get a good deal right now on a new one in light of gas prices/dealer inventory - thoughts?

Also, on the Pathfinder....the last time I took it to be serviced at the dealer, the service guy told me that when I was ready to sell it, to try to sell it to a private party. He said the SE/4WD/5spd is really appealing to the 16 year old kid market and I would probably get a much better price for it vs. trade in. Does that sound reasonable?
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825

Thanks for the great advice Terry!

We ended up giving it back to Audi as the wife wanted a new car to get to work and back in. We ended up with a 2004.5 Volvo S40 and we both love it. Just curious though, we went for one (passion red) that just had upgraded audio and cold package as we couldnt justify $3k for leather and a hole in the roof. Do you think that will be a huge issue on these down the road? The dealer was selling more lower spec cars than the fully loaded ones so i have a feeling people like VFM rather than bells and whistles. :)

    Thanks again for your help.

    Sorry...

    Hi Terry,

I am looking at a BMW 328 Convertible at a dealer in austin.

"1997 BMW 328iC Convertible: Green with tan leather, Premium package, wood trim, power top, automatic, upgraded 17" wheels with recent tires. 50,000 miles,"

The VIN number shows a funny detail, dunno what to make off it. WBABK8329VET96421

It shows a title being issued after being bought at auction and then driven for 1000 miles. Has it been sold and resold recently or is that normal.

Whats a good price for this baby ?

Should I get this checked out at a independent place. Any suggestions on what I should be doing are welcome..

    Thanks a ton!

Oil changed every 5K with Mobil 1. Owned since new. Car is in #9 condition with very few door dings (this is New York City, after all!).

Am I out of line looking for $5500? Trade-in is pegged around $3400 or so and retail $6000.

If I drive it to Florida, I may sell it to my father so he can finally retire his 84 Cutlass 4-door that has who-knows-how-many miles in excess of 100,000! Maybe my mother's 84 Fifth Avenue with 150,000+ can go....

Of course Dad's price would be more or less the trade-in value.... Never piss off your parents!

    Thanks for any enlightening responses.

You asked for the VIN on the Darth Vadar Z3 to see if it was sent off to auction.
