    After looking around for a decent $1000-2000 around town car and being less than thrilled with the selection of 12-20 year-old rusty Toyotas and Hondas, I've recently run across this:

    97 Saturn SL1
    manual transmission (fine with me!)
    charcoal gray, gray cloth, factory cassette, a/c, no power stuff
    almost 122k miles, Chicago area
    body fine, usual scratches and nicks but no rust or dents, of course. Interior could use a detail but I think it will clean up nicely. Runs and shifts fine, from what I can tell. Will need tires soon, but they're 13s I think, so not much of a consideration (~$200 for a good set of four).

    It's on a dealers lot; what's a decent retail price for this gem?

    I'm not in love with the idea of driving a Saturn, but my friends and relatives who own them seem pleased with them (ALL over 100k), and I guess they're cheap to fix, and cheaper still with the manual trans. I just can't justify getting a new car, even if I COULD get a loan, to drive three miles each way to work and out to the burbs once a month. IF I could get a loan, I'd be the idiot with the $450 Hyundai payment, upside down til I'm 50; no, thanks. So with my really bad credit, I'd rather just drive an old car, and this one seems nicer, or at least newer, than most.

    Friend at work with a recent divorce and two kids in college wanted advice on what to get for $3k... the local leadfeet put their heads together, and aside from the perennial Prizm, the SL1/SW1/SC1 came out as a strong contender. They last a bunch longer than the DOHC cars, and since the owners tend to be these cult-following nutcases -- I mean this in a good way -- the maintenance usually gets done. Add to that the plastic panels, and you may have a winner... As to price; it's worth "nothing", so I'd think that $1,200-$1,900 on the outside would buy it...
    Or wanna buy my new Prizm :-) ? Just kidding.

    It's going to the shop tomorrow and gets a new clutch on Monday. I haven't decided if I'll keep it... it's the weirdest combination: side balloons but no ABS, Lsi but 5sp, pwr pack & alloys but crank windows.

    Hey Terry-
    Wondering about a good retail price on a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE wagon (this would be for my mom.)
    The details:
    '01 Saab 9-5 SE (V6 auto) wagon, black over sand leather. 31,000 miles, pretty much the all the options (ventilated seats are an unknown...I forgot to look.) VERY good condition, and it's currently parked on a VW/Mazda/Pontiac/BMW joint in Nashua, NH.
    What'd be a fair price? They're asking $22,9XX.
    Thanks.

                    =============================

              You live in Nau Hamsha and your looking at a 01 SE 9-5 wagon V6, it's got 31k, auto, good color for the area and you say it's nice and clean ... if it is, and the service is from yesterday and the rubber is waaay deep, then the dealer probably has the super tall $14's low/mid $15's in it, add a this and that, a little service, some round things, a dent fix here and there and it might hit the table at the mid $16's, maybe ....

               $22,900 ..? .. that's a Great Price if your name is Teresa Heinz Kerry and you have more money than sense .. $19,5 is a fair price and $20,5 would flat kill it ....

                 Don't forget to let me know.!

    My friend Andreas is zeroing in on his quarry, the elusive V6 Solara...
    2001 Solara SE V6 automatic
    68k miles, black over tan cloth
    Power options, remote keyless, CD, sunroof
    alloys with brand-name tires, not new, not bald
    spoiler (yech), paint has a coupla small dings,
    and a rock chip in front was fixed.
    At a small independent in K' zoo... he says he needs to make room for 4x4's.. I believe it... can you say lake effect snow?
    Anyway, the car was bought at the Nashville auction and originally lived in Mississippi. Andreas plans to have it checked out at the Kalamazoo Toyota dealership -- pull the valve cover, check for sludge -- and take it from there. Clean Carfax but no maint receipts.
    The "asking price" is $14, which strikes me as, uh, optimistic. What's the real deal?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Mathias

                    =========================

                   SLE or SE .?

               Your right, they're kinda rare and still get some money, this one has the slider (make sure it's factory) V6 and the power junk .. 70k.? if all the service is right I wouldn't have much fear ...

                 *Nashville shows: 67,482 miles and he paid $10,9, add the auction fee $250, transport $300, a this and that $300 .. probably hits the table around that $11,8 figure, I have a funny feeling that $12,5/$13ish will find it a new driveway ~ besides it's a "Sawthen vehicle" ya know ....................... :)

                    let me know ...

    How much could I sell this for? Atlanta area is it's home.

    1996 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder
    Automatic
    126,000 miles
    Gold exterior/tan leather interior

    Options: power windows, locks, mirrors, cruise, am/fm cassette, aftermarket sunroof, cold AC, leather

    Exterior: A couple of 1" scratches on the rear bumper, slight ding on the rear quarter. Otherwise it is in pretty good shape for a 8 year old car. Tires look to have about 50% left.

    Interior: Headliner needs cleaning. Non-smoker. Leather looks like it was never sat on.

    Mechanical: Purrs like a kitten, AC is COOOLD, brakes are in good shape. Seems to need nothing.

    Overall, it looks as if it's a detail away from being retail-ready. Only thing that worries me is the aftermarket sunroof. It's power and the install is clean but will it hurt my chances of a quick sale when the time comes?

    Terry,
    You Da Man, Thanks a bunch!

    " SLE or SE .?"
    Let's see if we can find the clue in the following line:
    "2001 Solara SE V6 automatic"

    I dunno, Terry, who did your LASIK, Jack the Ripper? The Ritalin is in the medicine cabinet, 2nd shelf up...

    " I have a funny feeling that $12,5/$13ish will find it a new driveway ....................... :)"

    Thanks a bunch, this one will be painless methinks, if it checks out I think an easy $12,900 and everyone happy.

    I'll be sure and tell you what happens.

    Oh, and can you believe it, he doesn't want my "new" 99 Prizm? Talk about hoity-toity!

    Take care

            ===========================

              It's a 96 with 125k, it's probably an ASC and if it was going to leak, it would be leaking by now, check the headliner real close and see if it's been replaced .... the only people that look at sunroofs are idiots like me, it won't hurt the resale ..... dealers will probably peg this beauty at the $3,0 range, sellers will see that $4,900 zipcode ......

    ... **Public Auto Auctions?** ....

                   Maybe I can kill 2 birds with one frying pan ... public auctions are fine ~IF~ you know what your looking for and how to price the vehicle your looking at ...

                    More and more auctions are going public, which is great for dealers .. they set the time before the dealer auction, the vehicles are nice and clean, they give the public a chance to look at em' and in some places even test drive ... the negatives: most folks can't spell STOP, they will bid til' they OWN it, then brag about their great deal - ever been to a Estate auction or a Foreclosure.? .. people go nuts, folks will pay waaay over market then scratch their head for the next 6 months .l.o.l.....

                    97 Saturn SL1 .. I'm glad your brought this one up, dealer maybe has the $800/$1,200 figure in it ... Saturns are becoming some of the "best kept secrets" they have good reliability, seem to run forever and are a great target price vehicle .. 02 SL2's with 15/20k can be bought for the $7,5 or less ....

    There are four '99 M3's listed FS in the August Roundel mag. Asking prices between $24.5 & $27.5, mileages between 36K & 52K.

    And eight '98 M3's: from $13.9 (with 160K) to $29 (with 27K miles). And four '97's, etc.

    To my knowledge, there weren't many changes from '97 thru '99 for these (larger 3.2 engine introduced in '97).

    These are all private owner ads, & some of the cars sound really babied; waxed & Zymoled every 15 seconds, Mobil 1, no snow, garaged & with a cover too, etc. etc. I'm curious myself as to what one of these could actually be purchased for......

    My trade:

    2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser, Turbo.

    No leather, no sunroof, no power seats.

    Electric blue, very pretty.

    Car has 20900 miles, and is immaculate. Really.

    This site suggests about $2500 less than KBB.

    I am thinking about getting a Chrysler 300, and would like to provide a REASONABLE offer to a dealer for the value of my potential trade in.

    Thanks for you help.

    1999 M3
    Black/Black
    All options (pwr windows, locks, heated seats auto dual zone climate control, leather, roof, cruise, traction control, cd changer, side airbags)
    55k miles
    Manual trans
    Everything works as it should
    Tires about halfway
    Interior is about halfway 'tween mint and average, no flaws to speak of
    Exterior is slightly above average, only flaw to speak of is a 3" long scratch on the sunroof panel, about the width of a cat claw
    No known paint by numbers
    What's it worth private party and trade? Are '99 M3s impossible to find?

                =================================

              Depending on where you live, they're not hard to find, but there not hangin' from every tree either .. nice vehicles, but they are a "niche" vehicle and you have to find that "niche" buyer and he's lookin for the one with no hits runs or errors .... as a rule, the M3 buyers know these little dudes better than the owners.

                 Miles are kinda ok, the service has to be 120%, need to have deep sneakers (good description on the scratch) and have a wonderful detail whether it's traded or sold ... depending on the dealer, trade side, in and around the super tall $17's low/mid $18's, might "could" maybe find a dealer that will cruise up to the $19ish figure if it's Jam-up and Jelly tight and it needs -0- ......

                   Down the curvy path to Retail Rd, finish any service, maybe do the tire thing, it's gotta be cleaner than the Board of Health and twice as sanitary, a super duper 5/6 liner Ad in the biggest paper in the area, $24,900 *asking* and send it south for $23,9/$24,5 ...

                         let me know what happens ...

    Terry, thanks for the service you provide. I am looking to trade my 1999 Honda CRV EX in for a brand new Scion TC. Regarding my car:

    ---AC blows cold, heat works fine
    ---Dual Airbags
    ---All power windows + power locks work fine.
    ---Car is well maintained (clean interior/exterior) and driven by an adult. The oil changed at 3k miles, the car has never been off-road.
    ---The car has not had any major damage, clear title, and has not had any service work done since the brakes at 50k. Brakes will be re-done by me this week. It has never been painted.

    Wow.! .. now there's a description ...!

                     In Iowa we have a 100k EX AWD, new round things, cold breeze, auto, serviced, getting new stoppers and no Picasso work ....

                   Even with all the miles (if it's nice) you should be seeing the mid/tall $6's, "maybe" the low low $7's .... if the dealer gets hinky at $3/$4,000 just throw it down Retail Rd, $9,495 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $7,9/$8,9 .......

    Terry:

    I leased a new Z4 and instead of the 525 am thinking of selling our SUV.

    It is a 1999.5 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4x4 with Sunroof and Leather Packages (with side airbags) and Limited Slip Differential. The sticker was $34888. It has 52K miles, New Michelin Tires, Front Brake Pads and clean. We are in NorCal.

    This will not be a trade in but a direct sale. How much should we expect?

    The 1999.5 Pathfinder is Pearl White Metallic(special LE only color).

    1999.5 LE 4x4

    - leather package (includes side airbags)
    - sunroof package
    - LSD (Limited Slip differential)
    - Clean, dealer maintained with all records
    New Michelin Tires and Front Brakes

    Still looks new, no current or past damage. Located in No. KY.

    Hi Terry,

    You quoted tall 10's, low 11's on trade.
    Since retail road yielded nothing at $13500 asking, I'm sending down trade in lane for $10400.
    I suspect most people don't even know what an Axiom is.

    I ordered a Scion tC and am bidding farewell to this self-evident truth.

    Thank you for the help.

    Is there some objective tool that measures paint color instead of depth (like an Elco does)? If I end up keeping the Altima, I want *everything* fixed, and the rear bumper is still off half a shade from the rest of the car. It would be nice to have some hard evidence instead of just my word that it looks hinky.

    I posted the other day on a 2003 PT Cruiser, Turbo.

    Everything I look at says 15K or above, the dealer is offering just $12,800.

    I would be getting a 2005 Chrysler 300, using a green sheet (below invoice), so I suspect he is trying to find some profit here.

    Now what? He has a 2003 Turbo, red instead of the blue that I have, and is pricing it at 17K. Is this reasonable? That he is asking for more than 4K profit for my trade?

    I'm trying to be reasonable here...but this is a tough one.

    Terry,
    Thanks for your help. I pick it up tomorrow from the body shop, and I will begin my new car search. I was hoping to get about 24-25k before I was rear ended. I won't lie, when ( not if ) they asked if it has been hit. Hopefully you are wrong on how hard they will hit me in trade, but you seem to be generally right on. Anyways, thanks again I will let you know how it pans out. and I'm leaving the chromees on, factory wheels chromed are a big thing in so cal !

       except 2 small door dings;
    Excellent interior except 1 small

    Want to sell it outright to maximize $ but don't have the time or energy, that is, IF I can get a remotely decent offer on it as a trade. Just wondering a range of what to realistically expect.

    She just fried the engine, and she and her husband want to decide whether to get a new vehicle or buy a new engine and hold on.

    * 2000 Chevy Impala LS
    * 3800 V6
    * loaded, every option including cowhide, max music, power roof hole
    * north NJ (metro NYC area)
    * silver
    * clean body and interior, typical stone chip here and there in the finish

    now for the bad news...

    * 140,000 miles (60 miles each way to work)

    They're willing to spend a few grand on a new engine and get a few more years out of it, but they'd like an idea on what it's worth. Give me numbers with both a blown engine and with a swapper in place.

    I can usually call these pretty well myself, but the blown engine and the miles are throwing me on this one.

    Thank you sir!

    Do you want any gravy with that?

    I don't think we need Terry for this one, except maybe for authority. First, it is almost impossible to kill a 3.8l GM engine. Secondly, a new engine, installed, is going to run $3 at least.
    So invest $3, to be left with a car worth, maybe, $2? $3 if you sold it on the street? I think there's the answer she's looking for.

    Look at it another way, with a new engine, what will the tranny do when it hits 170k?

    Sell the car for parts; might see $800 if it looks good.

    Terry will surely give me a wedgie if I spoke out of turn... -Mathias
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,281
    NJ/NYC metro driving will do that to a car... Mathias is right. If 140k killed the engine, the tranny can't be far behind. And if 140k killed the engine, no way the tranny fluid could have lasted the 50-100k miles that GM specifies before fluid replacement. Even if all the maintenance was done, it doesn't paint the picture much prettier.

    I don't know what the labor costs are, but an eBay search shows a 3800 Series II with 9,000 miles off of a wrecked Impala for $550. Might be worth it if you could get the whole thing done for under a grand. Did the old one die of head gasket or intake manifold gasket failure? GM just couldn't get those right.
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
    Mathias, we're thinking alike. I was guessing $3-4K for a new six banger myself. She doesn't really want to shell out a decent down payment AND monthly payments right now with a kid in college. I agree, even with a swapper, 2-3 more years will put her well over 200K on the odo, and that car will be near worthless by then.

    corvette, it just happened, so there's not even a diagnosis on the failure just yet. I did tell her the mileage was just plain brutal for that year... they'd get eaten alive on a trade, whether running or not. Mechanic labor in these parts can be as much as $90 an hour - 3 days of labor is almost $2200, and with all the electronics of today's engines, any misconnection of a component or wire will cause all kinds of probs. I agree that the trans is likely the next to go with that kind of use; she's not exactly a gearhead so she probably had warning signs that there was impending engine doom and didn't realize it.

    I kinda knew the answer anyway, but she knws I work here too, and I offered to ask the pros to be sure.

    shop your local GM dealer, also, because if I remember correctly, a 3.8 GM reman (3 yr, 50k warranty) was $1200-1300 - add in labor and tune up parts and you're getting by under $2500, I'd think...

    Drop another $900-1100 and replace the transmission at the same time for little or no more labor...

                  ============================

                  Mornin' Cris .. Is someone crabby this morning ..?

                 In the land of the Cowboys we have a 95 325ic, we have a handshaker, we have that darn black with tan guts in Texas (no help) we also have 46k short miles and the history "looks" clean ....

                 Bimmer dealer.? .. this guy is *asking* all the money - I mean ALL the peso's for this puppy ... so the paint better be deep, no kisses, no repaints and the rubber matches it, no curb rashes, new stoppers, seats look hovered in, top should be pretty much 100% and the service better be 110% - the miles are super short for the year, but they have to be super short "loved" miles and tops are super expensive ..

                   If ~ it's a super duper glow in the dark ~ How Ya doin', I need nothin', look at me 95 Bimmer drop top .. then the dealer "might" could have the super tall $9's low $10's in it and $12,9 would be the EOW (End Of the World) for it ... "if" - it needs a this and a that, paint has that Swirlo'matic look, top is a little weak, seats are soft, sneakers are 5 minutes away, the shifter is anxious and the dash lights up like a Christmas tree, then the dealer might have the mid/tall $8's low $9's in it and it becomes a - Pass .... spend a few bucks on this one and have it looked at real close, if all is well, then your an owner ... I just sold a 98 328IC with 51k, babied, garaged, come to Jesus condition and it did $17,5 .. so this should give you an idea where you are ..

                           Let me know, this time I will be lookin' for your post ................ :)

    ...... I'll take mine over easy thank you.! .. you and Mathias pretty much covered this one ..

                   Kinda hard to fry a 3800, but it does happen ... lets say it was "nice" except for the B-i-g miles, then it would probably be worth somewhere around the $3/$4ish figure .. add the blown engine and you got nada - $500/$900 on a good day ... get an engine, Ooops, I mean get a "good engine" and were talkin' $1,500, maybe less .. the labor will kill it here, "at Least $1,200", so by the time they get over all the smoke and mirrors, and I dropped my $30 wrench down #2 cylinder and I can't find my ham sandwich they could be rolling towards $1,500+ ... like Mathias said: spend $3,000+ for a $3,000 vehicle.? - What price Glory.? .............. :)

    LX, 2WD, CD changer, fully electric sun roof, 16" alloy wheels, roof rack, tint, brand new timing belt, fairly new tires and brakes. All scheduled maintenance has been done on this. It has 94000 miles (mostly freeway). I was offered $5K in a trade. I was TOTALLY offended. Can you please tell me a fair trade on this? It's in excellent condition. :)

    I am going tonight to possibly trade it for a new Element. I am SO undecided. ANY advice is GREATLY appreciated! :):):)

    Thank you.

    Over a month now without buying a new car or even going near the car lots. Could I be cured? Nah, I doubt it, but I'm too busy to even think about buying a new car.

    Plus I just added my mom's car payment to the pile, that's kind of like buying another car I guess, especially since I pay for the insurance on the car too. But hey, it keeps her from working 60 hours a week and driving 200 miles/day.
