do all the buttons work? how are the tires? any rust? how is the interior?

Talked to Bob (the husband) today - he was driving the Imp when it blew. Said it started out as light knock, then LOUD knocking. Looked in the rear view mirror and was laying down a white smokescreen the Navy would be proud of. Engine finally shut off - he coasted to the side and got out for a look. Oil was pouring from somewhere other than the pan, white smoke everywhere, small fire on the exhaust man. When the tow truck raised it up, whatever oil was left in it flooded out. He hasn't looked for a hole in the block yet, but he figures it either blew the head gasket or it threw a rod.

He's got a quote for a brand new crate 3800 long block, everything except the intake man, for $2400, and he and his brother can install it (brother's a mechanic). Since the car is otherwise not worth anything, they're just gonna swap the engine (and the trans afterwards unless he can get a good price on one now), and run the Imp till the wheels fall off. Only thing he's a little concerned about is, the crate only carries a 12m/12K warranty, which would only last them 5 months - that appears to be the warranty for the performance engine... the generic Goodwrench swapper appears to be 36m/50K.

The tires are fair, no rust, everything works as far as I know. The interior has no rips, but the inside is pretty dirty. needs to be detailed.

while i think terry will still give you an estimate, i would suggest re-posting with a better description than that. to get the best possible estimate, try to describe it well enough that terry can get a good mental picture.

IF IF IF the truck is SUPER SUPER clean on the outside, with a good healthy detail inside, no runs, no hits, no errors, no hail, no angry neighbors with louisville sluggers, or runnings of the kentucky derby on the interior, maintenance is last week, and you are not dealing with star ford, you should be looking in the tall, tall, tall $3k's, maybe in the low $4's. if the dealer is smoking the silly stuff, and takes a few months off work, you MIGHT see mid/upper $4k's.

i would send this truck down retail road in bullitt county. put a nice 5-liner in the mt. washington/shepherdsville paper, and *asking* $6495-$6995. send it away with the first $5500-$6k.

also, with the way a few of the dealers here in town work, i would make sure the $4300 was an actual offer and not a "what if" carrot.

    *go cards*

I try, I just hate to see her working so hard when I can do something about it.

Speaking of working too hard, I've been out logging, man, that's some serious work. I have more respect then ever for my hubby.

If the Autozone reman scares ya......Call around to some major auto part jobbers.
Jasper re man engines are out here with full warranty. There are better choices and prices out there than buying from Mr. Goodwrench.

    Hi Terry,
Right now i am looking at some cars, and need some professional opnions. The cars are in NYC.

    1. white 02 Lexus SC430, with 78000 miles, it is certified preowned, and engine warranty for life. Its from a dealer. they are asking $37000

    2. 01 MB clk55 AMG, silver, with 25000 miles. dealer asking $36000.

    3. 02 MB clk55 AMG, black, with 27000 miles, dealer asking $40000.

They are all in good condition, my question is that will I be able to sell a sc430 with 100000 miles. I put about 8000 miles a year.
And which is a better deal between the three.

    Thanks alot.

02 Accord LX, auto, 4dr, 4cyc, metalic beige, neutral cloth, no extras
    3400 miles (no, not 34,000)
    no chips, dents, paint
sits in my 80yr.old mother's garage most of the time
    private sale value?

second question. . . same car after a parking lot mishap. . .(2 weeks ago). Volvo backed into this slow moving Honda. Body work and paint required to front fender, both doors, and rear fender (around $2000 per estimates).
private sale value after it's fixed?

Wanna ask the other guy's insurance company for some diminished value. I know it's worth less but how much? Thanks

Miles are tall on the Lexus, price is steep, if the engine warranty requires that you have the service performed at the dealer the warranty is worth -0-. I'm surprised they are able to sell an SC430 with 78,000 miles.

That black 2000 Solara SE w/ cloth and 68k?

Andreas took it to the Toyota dealer for inspection, where it got glowing reviews -- no sludge in evidence, everything else shipshape as well.

$12,600 took it home. He likes. The girl he's after appears to like, too... What price happiness?

                =============================

You got a boat load here ...

1.) 02 SC430 with almost 80k and a the Big CPO ... is this a trade or bought at auction.? gimme the Vin# .. dealer probably paid the $33/$34ish range for it and with the CPO he "might" have the $35ish range in it, he's not trying to hurt anyone, just trying to make a sale ...

           2.) 01 MB clk55 AMG, silver, with 25000 miles. dealer asking $36000 ... $36 .? thats awful cheap for a 25k C55 ..

           3.) 02 MB clk55 AMG, black, with 27000 miles, dealer asking $40000 ... $40 .? thats awful cheap for a 02 C55 with 27 klicks ....

One of 2 things - these are all crash and burn victims, the dealer is lookin' to "turn and burn" some expensive inventory - cheap, or both .l.o.l...

Do your homework and check them out real close , I have a feeling it's door #2 and with fall fast approaching the NE corridor it's a dealer thats lookin' to move some expensive inventory - cheap .....

100k Lexus ..? .. folks don't have much fear and it's a whole lot easier to sell a 100k Lexus than it is to sell a 100k Benz or Bimmer, that's for darn sure.! .. I have a friend in the biz that only buys and sells hi mileage *clean* Yota's and Lexi's and does Very well at it .. that being said, he knows what and were it will go .. you, in the meantime, will be in the mercy of the market .. take the Clean low mileage Benz - if they check out ........... :)

    ***REPOST***

Terry, thanks for the effort you put in here.

Time to get your input on trade-in value of my Blazer, please....

    1999 Chevy Blazer LS, 4-door, 2WD
    VIN 1GNCS13W6X2209262
    Dallas, TX
    Black
    53K miles
    AM/FM/CD/Cassette
    power windows, locks, seat
    overhead console w/garage opener
    cruise
    roof rack
    towing package
    privacy tint
    new tires
    Excellent cond. visually; looks new
       except 2 small door dings;
    Excellent interior except 1 small
       red stain rear floorboard
    Good cond. mechanically
    All records

Want to sell it outright to maximize $ but don't have the time or energy, that is, IF I can get a remotely decent offer on it as a trade. Just wondering a range of what to realistically expect. Is $7K or even slightly more a completely ridiculous expectation?

    Thanks!
  • capjand1capjand1 Member Posts: 18
I have narrow it down to the 02 sc430, and the 01 CLK55 AMG.
The vin for the lexus is JTHFN48Y620013186.
I call the guy today, and he told me the price of the car is $38000, and I have the option to buy extended warranty from him a 4yrs/48000 miles for an additional $1100. He said it is a one owner car, and in very good condition, bo accident, clean title.

As for the clk55, vin is WDBLJ74G21F185207, they are asking $37000.

Please tell me what you think.
    Thanks

Terry - can you give me an idea of what this would bring on a trade in.

94 BMW 325i w/85,000 miles. All on Long Island, NY
    Black with black leather interior
    Sunroof
New single CD player with aux input
Tires – about 10,000 miles on them
New Computer (don’t ask) about 5,000 miles ago
Rebuilt tranny (Aamoco) with 5,000 miles on it
Interior is in v.good shape – no wear marks or blemishes on the inside and the cushions are very firm.
Exterior – The car was seriously rear-ended once (its on Carfax). A few dinks, but otherwise the paint and body are in good condition. Both fog lights are gone.
Air Conditioning – slow leak, probably needs to be replaced
Temparture controls – The car is either hot or cold. Since the computer was replaced there doesn’t seem to be an in-between.
Brakes – one or more of the rotors is warped. You can tell at low speeds, but its really noticeable at high speeds.
Otherwise everything is clean and is in good shape.

    Many thanks in advance!

To me, a choice between a:

    01 MB clk55 AMG, silver, with 25000 miles, & a
    02 SC430 with almost 80k,

is a no brainer. And Terry pretty much told you that, as did corvette, if I understand them correctly.

Even tho the SC430 is a Lexus, it's got over THREE TIMES the mileage on it as the M-B. When you go to sell/trade-in one of them someday, the market for a really high mileage car is going to be much more limited, while a really low mileage bmw or m-b can be very desirable.

BTW, do any of these have books/dealer service records/carfax? I'd do a lot of investigating before spending that much on a used car, inc. taking it to a high-end body shop to check for previous accident repairs, if any, talking to the dealer that serviced it, etc. And re-read Terry's response a few times--my interpretation is that both of the M-B's are either a Great Bargain, or Too Good to be True. Plus I'm wondering--who/what is the dealer, a Lexus store, or??? Anything "flakey", with the history of any of these cars, & you'll pay for it later--the "history" of a high-end car can be really important, esp. when you go to re-sell it.

    Just my 2 cents.

    >>I have narrow it down to the 02 sc430, and the 01 CLK55 AMG

Great description, thanks .. where's Useless Texas.? oop's, it says EULESS, Texas, sorry ...l.o.l....

The history "looks" clean, it's black (no help) looow miles for the year, it's a 4dr 2wd LS, power pack, rack, new round things, tow pack, we have the solar glass and you say it's in nifty condition - (no such thing as "excellent" condition unless your driving a a 02 SC430 with 9,500 miles and it was driven, garaged, covered, stored and blessed by the Pope) .... if this one is really nice, no 200 swirl o'matic car washes, cold breeze, looks/feels/drives like a 01 without the Bonnie and Clyde interior, then trade side .. in and around the mid to tall $5's, if it's super wonderful, you might "maybe" get a dealer to drop the low low low low low $6's in it, the only thing that will hold this one back is the color ... down Retail Rd, superb detail, great Ad, $8,900 *asking* and away it goes for $7,5/$8,5 ...

It's a 98 Sentra GXE, we got the 72k thing going on, it's an auto, we need new sneakers, we have cold breeze, black and grey interior .. not much of a description ..

If it's "nice", the interior doesn't have that KFC look, no paint by numbers, new stoppers, no meteorite hits .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $2's, might get a dealer to drop the low low $3's if it's nicer than described ........

The 1999.5 Pathfinder is Pearl White Metallic(special LE only color).
    1999.5 LE 4x4
    52xxx miles.
    - leather package (includes side airbags)
    - sunroof package
    - LSD (Limited Slip differential)
    - Clean, dealer maintained with all records
New Michelin Tires and Front Brakes
This will be a direct sale.

Trade side, (if it's really nice) it's probably worth in and around that tall $11 figure, maybe the low low low low low low $12 figure on a great and glorious day .. a fair price on the retail side would be "around" the $14ish Zipcode - it depends if your buying or selling ....

Steptronic transmission, premium package (Orient Blue metallic, black leather), navigation system, Xenon adaptive headlights, run-flat tires, park distance control.
This would be a dealer trade-in.

(also, I live in the Bay area -do you know if California is one of the states where I have to pay taxes on the full price of a new car, or one or the states where I only pay taxes on the net amount I am spending to trade up?)

Super nice super clean, no Popeyes chicken, no K-Mart connections, no Dutch Boys, just a clean Pilot EX .. if so, your looking at the super tall $23's low $24's, might "could" maybe find a dealer to stroll close to the $25 figure if it's super nice, glows in the dark and needs -0- ...

    My trade:
    2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser, Turbo.
No leather, no sunroof, no power seats.
    Electric blue, very pretty.
Car has 20900 miles, and is immaculate. Really.
This site suggests about $2500 less than KBB.
I am thinking about getting a Chrysler 300, and would like to provide a REASONABLE offer to a dealer for the value of my potential trade in.
    Thanks for you help.

                   ===========================

Ok, we have a 03 PT Cruiser turbo with 21k, no slider, no seats, no hydes and no help with the color .. the miles are semi-tall, we have no toys, color is not a winner, sounds like a $12,5/$13ish Cruiser to me .. what are they giving you.?

Hello anyone??? Please help with an appraisal on this vehicle. BTW, It's located in Houston, TX. Thanks!!!

LX, 2WD, CD changer, fully electric sun roof, 16" alloy wheels, roof rack, tint, brand new timing belt, fairly new tires and brakes. All scheduled maintenance has been done on this. It has 94000 miles (mostly freeway). I was offered $5K in a trade. I was TOTALLY offended. Can you please tell me a fair trade on this? It's in excellent condition. :)

Terry - can you give me an idea of what this would bring on a trade in.
94 BMW 325i w/85,000 miles. All on Long Island, NY
    Black with black leather interior
    Sunroof
New single CD player with aux input
Tires – about 10,000 miles on them
New Computer (don’t ask) about 5,000 miles ago
Rebuilt tranny (Aamoco) with 5,000 miles on it
Interior is in v. good shape – no wear marks or blemishes on the inside and the cushions are very firm.
Exterior – The car was seriously rear-ended once (its on Carfax). A few dinks, but otherwise the paint and body are in good condition. Both fog lights are gone.
Air Conditioning – slow leak, probably needs to be replaced
Temparture controls – The car is either hot or cold. Since the computer was replaced there does’t seem to be an in-between.
Brakes – one or more of the rotors is warped. You can tell at low speeds, but its really noticeable at high speeds.
Otherwise everything is clean and is in good shape.
    Many thanks in advance!

Very good description, thanks.! .. well, we have a major meteorite hit to the transom, we have the stoppers going sideways, the eyeballs are MIA, rebuilt tranny, the air and controls are coughing up blood .. other than that, it's like brand new.

Without actually seeing this gem, depending on the dealer, it sounds like $3,0/$3,5ish on the trade side, the miles save this one, hopefully ...

.......... This was answered about a week ago .... you need to r-e-a-d the posts, not scroll over them ........................ ;)

Dealer wants to be conservative, but he will see $6,0+ at the auction ... down Retail Rd - $8,900 *asking* and $7,5/$8,5 gets a new owner ....

Good luck, let me know, but read the posts first .............. :)

I'd worry about this one.. That sunroof is aftermarket, as they weren't offered at all that year, and certainly not on the LX.. And 16" wheels? No CR-V has factory 16" wheels..

And.. in Suzerene's defense.. I think that was another CR-V last week, though similar in miles and age..

    regards,

27 minutes long? Ha, this year was the summer that wouldn't end. We had 90+ a lot of the summer, it JUST started cooling down into the 60's and 70's. I'm actually looking forward to winter.

Driving 30 mins to get cigarettes would be a good reason to quit huh?

Can you please provide me with a trade-in estimate for my 1997 BMW 740iL? Some details:

    - High miles (136K)
    - All the options - navigation, 6 CD changer in trunk, wipers on the headlights, etc.!
    - In good condition mechanically - serviced regularly, nothing currently in need of fixing as far as we know.
    - Exterior has a few scratches but otherwise in good shape and no accidents.
    - We live in Southwestern VA if that's relevant
    - Car is dark red (burgundy) with tan leather
    - Considering trading it for a new Toyota Highlander.
    - Listed it on Autotrader and local paper two weeks ago for $12,500. Have had a few inquiries but no offers.

I'd really appreciate any thoughts you have. We're getting tired of trying to sell it ourselves but don't know what's fair for a trade-in. Thanks!!

then realize that regardless of what the books say, no car with 136k miles is worth retail book - lower your selling price, and make sure you use the word "negotiable" with your number.

Hey hurricane dude, I've got one that needs your expert analysis.

It's a 2002 Acura RSX (not an -S) with the 4 banger and the SportShift slushbox. Color is Desert Silver (the darker one), with gray cows inside. Has all the regular goodies, roof, CD, etc. No nav. In the neighborhood of 28,xxx miles. Immaculate condition. Hovered in, to use the parlance of our time. Sneakers show plenty of tread. One small dent in the nose to get fixed.

Last winter it caught a piece of flying ice on the highway, resulted in a decent sized dent on the hood that required a $600 pull and paint.

Located in the home of the soon to be World Series Champion Cardinals.

Yikes.! .. what can I say, the miles aren't going to be your friend here, plus the color is no help ..

"IF" ~ the tires are super deep, no repaints, no uh oh it's Maaco, service is 120%, seats look hovered in and it looks/feels/drives like 50k .. then trade side, you should be seeing the tall $6's low low low $7's, Might "maybe" could "on a good day" even find a dealer thats into his bookie for some serious money and drop close to the $8 figure in it, thats a BIG maybe .l.o.l.. along with the tall miles, that darn color is killing it ...

Me personally, I would have that dude listed at $10,900 and snatch the first $9,5/$9,9 ..... $12,500 ...?!? ~ Your a brave Hiawatha ............................... ;)

Hurricane dude..? had to wrap up the properties, boat, bikes, my favorite Wayne Newton albums .. bud, this is the TWIN to what happened 5 years ago (almost to the week) with Floyd, we will be buggin' out tommorow morning ..

02 RSX with 28k, we have the right color, we have a little $600 kiss to the hood, leather, slider, tunes, auto and you say it's cleanish ..... depending on the finish work and the sneakers, trade side, in and around the mid/tall $13's, might see the low $14's ....... the Cards.? my money is on Boston ......
