Condition: Right now the transmission has some problems shifting into first gear and probably should be rebuilt/replaced. Tires are brand new, as well as the front brakes. Rear brakes have 50% left. Most everything else about the car is in decent shape given the age and mileage. There are a few scratches in the paint on the trunk lid due to car washes.
Other: Unfortunately, the car was wrecked pretty bad in the front end in 1999 and needed a new hood, front bumper and radiator. The repairs still look fantastic, but they are not the original equipment. I am the original owner.
I figure I would probably want to get the transmission repaired before trying to trade-in the car to a dealer. If that repair is less than $1500, would that be to my advantage to get it done?

If my brain isn't too addled, I think consensus is "lightly used" cars are great deals for dealers, not consumers.

The price seems pretty fair. A local no-haggle dealer here in the Atlanta area is selling a 2001 with 40k for $13,998 in a similar color with a similar lack of options.

The auto-only thing is a drawback, but frankly the type of driving Mrs. Lance does (drive 1/2 mile from house to interstate, drive 30+miles on interstate, 1 mile onto university campus) isn't the type that'd really draw out the advantages of a manual, anyway. Plus, it's a 5 speed auto, beleive it or not. We'd both prefer a stick, though.
Again, this is just gonna be a highway mileage queen, like the Accord is now. It's given us eight great years of service, but it's aging. Time for something new(er) I think.

It "seems" it was in rental service til' 32k and came out of George W. territory, no biggie if it was properly serviced ........ $9,900..? he's just trying to move a unit, but start him up at $9,0 and work your way from there ... if he runs it off to the auction he'll be seeing $8,8/$9,5 depending on the day and the barometric pressure .. be nice and negotiate the price - let me know ....

Before you had a chance to reply I ended up trading it for $1,500. Your guess at $900-$1,200 suggests I did ok.

Once we had agreed on the new car price, Bill (names have been changed), my salesman, brought someone else to appraise my del Sol. The appraiser said he couldn't offer more than $800 and just about suggested I sell it myself. Then the two of them called over a third person, Larry, a young salesman who is a car enthusiast--besides selling cars, he runs a website advertising parts for exotic cars. He was very excited about the car. He said that the rust and upholstery problems wouldn't matter to some of his car enthusiast friends because they would do the repairs themselves. He gave me some hints for advertising to local car enthusiasts, did some quick web research and came back suggesting I should be able to get $2,000-$3,000 without cleaning it up. Larry's enthusiasm seemed to infect the appraiser because he took another look at the car, went back to his office, and came back to me with the $1,500 offer. (Who knows, maybe he had just found a buyer.) I then spent a few days trying to sell it on my own, but with no success. So when I picked up the new car four days later I traded my beloved del Sol for $1,500.
That is a LOT of miles on any car. But remember, you are looking for someone who needs cheap transportation. And who has limited cash.
While I agree that would be the value that I would put on it, I think you should set your sights a bit higher....
It may have 200K, but even at $2995, it will be the cheapest '99 Camry on the planet.. If it is in as good a shape as you say, and looks like a 100K car, I think you'll get $2500 out of it (not from me..lol).

While I agree that would be the value that I would put on it, I think you should set your sights a bit higher....
It may have 200K, but even at $2995, it will be the cheapest '99 Camry on the planet.. If it is in as good a shape as you say, and looks like a 100K car, I think you'll get $2500 out of it (not from me..lol).

I have to agree 100%. Sure, it has a bazillion miles, but it IS a Yota, and it's the ever-popular Camry...and it's a '99 to boot. This is an outstanding car for a high school or college kid - it's new enough to "look new", it's in good condition, it's quiet, doesn't burn oil, doesn't clang and bang when you're running down the highway. You should be able to sell it in about 10 minutes for $1,000, lol.
My recommendation is similar to kyfdx - clean it and shine it up until it glows, and then put $2,995 on it. I'd be really surprised if you didn't get at least $1,800 to $2,000 out of it.
Hell, I'll buy that off of you for that price.
I'll keep you updated.

The miles are super low, it's got the dsl, it's a LS with the LT upgrade package, it's a 4wd 3/4 ton Ecab, the color is good for the area, dual zipcode breeze and it's a short box with the tow pack .. sounds pretty nice .... you can "ask" $29,900 and see what happens, your advantage here is the area, it's a big boat and camper area and you have the 4wd and the Dsl .... if the phone isn't ringing after 6/7 days, then you need to be lookin' at dropping the price .... I have a feelin' the low/mid $28's might be the "taking" price .... let me know, it sounds like a nice truck.

Only option was seat heaters on the cloth seats. It has the standard stuff, power windows, locks, mirrors, AM/FM tape player, no alloy wheels.
Interior is in great condition for the mileage. Exterior is in good condition. The front bumper will be repainted ($350) before we sell. Fairly new windshield. Tires are new Michelins, the brakes are factory but aren't used much because it's a highway cruiser. It was just serviced and they said the brakes didn't need replacement. It has had all the scheduled maintenance, synthetic diesel oil, timing belt at 100k and again at 120k due to a locked up tensioner. No other damage to the valves, etc., that we know about. Can you guess why he's thinking of getting rid of it?

It will cost them time and manpower to handle dealing with the title and getting it to the junkyard for you. Otherwise, pick a number, $100, $250, $500?? If the dealer already knows they have the sale on the Mazda 6, unlikely they will step up much towards a mercy offer.
Were it mine, I would drive it to the nearest salvage yard that is known for paying the highest amount for junker cars and get an offer. Then slap a sign on the windshield, for sale, runs, $900 or best cash offer. Shouldn't last too long. At least if you cannot unload it you will know up front what the salvage yard offer is for the car.
Pick a number , but don't let it exceed 500.

If ..... I read your email correctly ... the car is in Texas and you're in Florida (so you haven't seen, nor driven the vehicle - right.?) and transport is approx $1,400..? .. and he wants $42,500 for "his" inconvenience..?
Let me tell ya what I like about this deal ............... nothing.!
Like homes, boats or canary's - if you can't feel em' or touch em' - don't buy em ......
1.) for starters, transport from Dallas to Tampa should be half that ...
2.) if he wants $42,5 for the Boxster and he has "deep pockets" as you say, then he would have already traded, especially for a 3 hour drive - maybe he only got $38ish(?) you don't know, so $42 would be all the $$ because 11k isn't really low miles for a 04 ...
3.) if you're going to spend all that money (and you can't live without it) then you need to jump a flight and be there, how do know his neighbors kid didn't drop his i-pod on the hood and it's been repainted.? ..
4.) if this is really the type of vehicle you want, then maybe take your time and look around if you have the patience, the word being here is ~ "if" .. Boxsters will be "aplenty" come October/November when that first hint of snow or cold hits Atlanta or Philly, plus there will be a market shift and they will be less money ......
