Maybe I'm just naive, but I normally expect that if I calculate my trade-in value in advance of negotations, using sources like Edmunds, NADA, and sometimes Kelly, that I should have a reasonably good idea what my trade-in is worth. But lately, I'm finding that's not true.

Interestingly, before Edmunds stopped loading on Firefox on my Windows box, I posed a similar question on "Questions for a car dealer"...

I really didn't get much of an answer besides "You're a freak", which I really kinda already knew...

Anyway, you might want to meander back a week or so over there, if only to get some negative space on the question...

Hi Terry - my in-laws are looking to trade in their Lincoln for a new Altima or Maxima. What can they expect?
    1996 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC
    Detroit
    75000 Miles
Auto (can't imagine they made this with a manual)
    White
CD Player, Traction Control, but no moonroof
Very good condition for its age. No major parking lot dings or scratches. Interior is cluttered but will look nice once they clean out all the junk and remove the seat and steering wheel covers. Not sure how old the tires are - assume it needs new rubber. I think it needs new shocks - ride is pretty bumpy.
    Thanks!
    Ian
    ==============================

Morning Ian ..... as in Ian Hunter, from Mott the Hoople..? ... probably before your time, how about Kid Rock then ...

In Motown .... we have a 96 Lincoln MKVIII with 75k .... the miles are waaaay low for the year, cd, traction toys, no hole in the roof, leather (I'm sure) - not much of a description here .............. If ~ it's been serviced since day one, Polar air, it hasn't had a secret affair with Maaco, the sneakers are deep, it hasn't been to all of the $2.00 car washes in town, no Bonnie and Clyde interior and the Michigan winters haven't beat it silly with salt and the potholes ....... then trade side, in and around the super tall $2's, low/mid $3's ... if it needs stuff, start deducting ....

Me personally.? ... I would send this bad boy down Retail Rd ... "Marks" are still very popular and still get $$ if they are nice and clean, but in your area they only sell in nice weather because of the winters (RWD, remember) .... I would finish any service, drop a Fat Daddy Ad in the Detroit paper, get with detail gods and $6,495 *asking* and let someone beat me silly until I said $5,5/$5,9 ...... now, if this is a "beat" car then I would just trade it ....

    Don't forget the update........!

    Terry.

........ Nada, Edmunds, Kbb or your next door neighbor (that used to be in the car biz 5 years ago) can only give you "ballpark" - a zipcode an "idea" of what your vehicle is worth .....

They can't figure in the $1,700 "ding" or the soccer Mom interior or the bald tires or the dark color in a certain area, or the miles that someone might think is average ..... **it's a ballpark** ... not the Holy Grail or the Bible ..

Everything depends on the area, time of the year, color, condition, service and the "K" service .... no dealer is going to drop big money into any trade when it has 33k and the 30k service is due and it needs new sneakers, the interior is ruff and the sides look like it was a ball target for Tiger Woods .... see, most people get used to their own vehicle and they go blind to certain things .... have you shopped homes lately.? look at the interiors ... don't tell me people don't go blind ..l.o.l.......

    Terry :shades:

Have I angered Terry? I hope not....Terry, been trying to get an approximate value for this baby. I am guessing around 15K, that low because of the miles. I would like ot know for sure before I actually clean up the car for sale. With a 3 yo, cleaning the car is a temporary action.

    Location: Washington DC suburbs
    2002 Sienna LE 'Symphony'

    Minivan
    3.0 L V6 FWD
    23500 Miles
    Color: Gold/Biege
Options: Power Door, JBL Sound, power drivers seat, AC, AT, Side airbags Alloy Wheels, abs roof rack, 4 captians seats, towing package
    Condition:
Exterior: No dents. 1 ding, and a few clearcoat scratches (not into the paint)
Interior: Could use a detailing, but can be cleaned up. Some scratches in the cargo area.
    Tires: OEM. abotu 50% wear
Brakes: Original, I am unsure of % remaining
Maint: Per dealer spec (3000 Mile oil changes)

Reason for (maybe) getting rid of it: Wife wants a wagon...not a van. Depending on the value, I will either make her keep the van, or we buy a wagon. Just not sure. I currently owe 10,500.

So what are you trying to tell me .. this is a repost ..?

In DC ........... we have a 02 Sienna LE (Sympathy for the devil.? - per the Rollin' Stones) ..... the miles are low low low, the color is right right right right, we got the power open, big tunes, dual breeze, side balloons, wheels, rack, abs, quads, tow pack and the rubber and stoppers are almost average ..... no paintwork, no Swiss Army knives or KFC in the interior ..? ... then trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $12's low/mid $13's - maybe "might" (depending on the dealer and "if" they really know what a LE Symphony is) could see the tall $13's, maybe ....... not a bad deal down Retail Rd --- blah blah blah and: $15,900 *asking* and $15/$15,5 gets a new driveway ......... $10,500 pay-off -- no sweat .!

    Let me know ...................!

    Hey Terry,

Still trying to get a handle on the trade-in value of the following:

    Location: Chicago
    2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4
Color: Thunder Gray with Beige Leather interior
    29,700 miles
    4.7L V-8 (run on Mobil 1)
All standard features (AC, PW, PS, PB, etc.)
Moon Roof (or is it Sun Roof?)
    Multidisc CD player
    Rear Air
    Front & Rear airbags
    Aluminum wheels
    Running boards
    Towing package
    Skid plate
Interior Condition: Like new. It looks and smells like a new car. Protective plastic wrap from factory still on carpet under the rubber floormats. No scratches/rips.
Exterior Condition: Very good. Only blemishes are 2 "rub" marks on each corner of the rear bumper.
Tires: Original and need to be replaced.
The vehicle has been run on Mobil 1 from day one.

We took it to Carmax two days ago. They loved the vehicle and offered to buy it for $25,000. The Lexus dealer right next door to Carmax offered us a bit less on a trade for a RX 400h.

    Fair money for the vehicle?

    Thanks for any advice/information.

Merlot.. that's the color, not what he's drinking...

    Calgary, AB Canada

    2003 Subaru Outback Wagon
    2.5L, 4 Cyl engine, Auto
    AWD
    66,000 Kms
    Ext: Dark Blue/ Int. Grey?
    Base Model, standard equip
Condition is very good, except tires are worn and all need to be replaced.
Front Brake rotors need to be re-done which they said they would do before delivery.

Dark Limo tint on back windows.

High black book is $16,300 CDN, Sticker is $23. Was in last night and dealer would not take less than $22. Should I cough up or let it slide? Not many '03's on the market here but I'd be ok with a good condition '01 or '02 as well.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,733
What do new Subies go for in your neck of the continent? I just took a peak and I could get a NEW '05 (take note of the new style, too) base Outback with automatic for a hair over $23K through carsdirect (which means probably cheaper if I wanted to put in the negotiation time).

So.... what does that mean in your area? $25? $26? (i honestly don't know - i'm just shooting in the dark here) ... but, really, it couldn't be THAT far from $22K that its worth getting one that's 3 years old, right??!

EDIT: ok, wanted to combine our discussion from the other board here, too.... here's what you just told me over there:
the 2005's are MRSP at $34, but I've heard you can get $4k off that - not sure if that's just in the states though.
She [salesperson?] did the % of what they expect at 24 months for leasebacks, at 55% of wholesale it came in at just under $20k. Then she started saying so I dont' think that 21-22-23 is really out of range. Well hold on you just rounded up 3k!!!

so... wait... what calculator is this?? 55% of wholesale? What's a wholesale number on a new car there? Well... let's say its 55% of full sticker of the new model (which is being REALLY generous) ... that's $18,700 ... so tell her you'll pay that number. ;)

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

  • canukchickcanukchick Member Posts: 20
Unfortunately I told her I'd pay $21 and she still didn't bite. - I think she (saleslady) did do 55% of full sticker - can't remember that part went very fast.

I guess I should just walk away, eh? Other cars in the sea!

Hi Terry. The in-laws traded in their Mark VIII today for a new Maxima. They got $3K, you pegged it at "super tall $2's, low/mid $3's", so spot on. Thanks for all your help.

You guesstimated my wife's Alero a while ago, but we decided to run it another couple years before we trade it in on a minivan.

    Thanks again,

Subies do hold value better up north. And Terry doesn't do Canadian. Is there any Canadian dealers lurking here?

22-23K still seems silly money for a 3yo 4 banger Subie wagon. Try buying private, though, not from a dealer. Don't know about AB but here in ON we pay about twice more in taxes buying from a dealer vs private, if you don't have a trade.

Unless you must have a Subie, I'd probably try a CRV or some such thing. No way a 3 yo CRV can cost you that much.

(Not a dealer, and not playing one here either) :D

    Indianapolis, IN
2000 BMW 323i rwd sedan - original owner
    2.5L I6, 5 spd manual
    88,000 miles
    titanium silver/black leather
Sport/Premium pkg (16x7.0 alloys, sport suspension, foglights, power front seats, multi-function streering whl, cruise, sunroof, wood trim, trip computer), xenon, cd, heated seats
Interior: perfect; Exterior: few minor stone chips front of hood...also, rear bumper cover replaced due to driving over piece of steel in road size of baseball bat -- steel bounced up and shattered plastic cover...not rear-ended, no other damage, no insurance claim & nothing on Carfax. No swirl marks in paint, as it has always been handwashed.
Tires: only 5k miles, say 20% worn
Brakes: pads replaced at 55k, good for another 20-25k
Maintenance: All done at dealership, oil/filter replaced at half of what computer calls for
Other: To the buyer goes a set of snow tires -- 205/50/16 Bridgestone Blizzaks 10-20% worn mounted on BMW Z3 alloys and a MY2000 3 series sales brochure (that's gotta be worth $$$).

Can't find any private Outbacks for sale!

I need a wagon, I'm short and need to be able to load 30+lbs onto a roof rack by myself. SUV's are too tall. I narrowed it down to Outback or Matrix but I just like the OB's better. Plus already 3 ppl I know have Matrix's.
  • zodiac2004zodiac2004 Member Posts: 458
    Try the Vibe then.
Better looking, IMHO and same internals. And I'm pretty sure you can find a new one for less than the 3yo Subie.

Or you could pick any wagon/SUV with a roofrack and use a sturdy stool :)

Hey Terry... You helped me on a chevy suburban (97) about 6 months ago and were right in the ballpark of what I got for it. Well, I have another I am debating on selling. Here goes...

    Atlanta, Georgia
    2003 GMC Yukon SLT
    2 WD; 4 door, V8
    47,000 miles
    White exterior,
Gray leather interior. tow package, roof rack, cd bose system,
    Tires 30% left
All dealer maintenance, brakes are fine.
No dings, couple minor scratches, overall good shape in and out. Well taken care of car.

Too hot for golf in this part of the country today, so I am inside doing some research. THANKS

Well, they're just guides, a rough estimate, & I don't know that 10% +or- is "whopping". But have you tried selling your '01 Lexus LX470 yourself? It's got high miles, but it's a Lexus. If it's as nice as you say--& this is totally a guess--you could get mid-high $30's perhaps privately. (Dealers want to give you $27K, & then sell it for $37K). Ditto the LS430--I bet you could do much better selling these yourself. Or just keep them both.....you've got 2 great vehicles if they're in nice condition. And just wait until you go shopping for a used Lexus at Lexus dealers--similar to yours even--you're gonna get a whole different story--like they want $3000 over full retail "book": I can hear it now: "this guy that just traded this mint condition LX470 in (for peanuts) kept his vehicles in perfect condition, & we can't possibly go down more than $1000 on our price" (that is $10,000 more than they gave you). You do the math.....& forget worrying about what the "guides" say.....

    Just my 2 cents.

*what the heck are the published guides good for if they are off by a whopping 10% on the value of a trade-in?*

I agree, at least try to sell yourself. I had asked Terry this question 6 months ago; was considering a trade in of a 2000 GS400(blk/blk/loaded) w/60K in great shape (no accidents, dings, new tires, detailed, fully maint'ed), and the dealer was offering about 15K max. He had 2 other 2000 GS's on the lot- a GS300 w/50K (not as clean either), asking $23K, and a GS400 w/50K (no Nak, etc) asking $26K and neither were certified. I will never know what they sold for, but I'm pretty darn sure it was much greater than $15K. I think this is why even though salespeople are always grousing about their commissions, getting squeezed and pinched by consumers, the dealers are still ultimately making money hand over fist. The several dealers (owners/managers) I know are all rolling around in it (can get into more details if you want)-

My point is that the "spread" buy vs sell appears enormous (at least in this instance), and appears greater than that on new cars. Ultimately, I kept my GS (happily!)

Okay .. it's a XE .. it's a 02 XE with tiny miles, it's a 02 XE crew cab with some 4x4 action and it's a long bed (kinda rare) .. we also have the V6, auto, the color is good anywhere, we have the power pack, bed liner, newish rubber, some kind of matching camper top, you haven't been towing my neighbors 37ft boat around and the stoppers are from yesterday, sounds nice .......... clean - no repaints, no midnight visits at Maaco...? .. if so, then it should be seeing in and around the mid/high $13's depending on the dealer ...... camper tops don't much for dealers, so you may consider pulling that puppy off and dropping it Ebay side ..... whats your pay-off.?

It is CPO... gotta get them spectacles checked...

I'm guessing the CPO is worth another $1500, so it looks like a good deal...

As always, thanks a lot!! I'll pass this info on..

    Terry,

I know how you like updates--I took the Z to CarMax today and they offered $21 even. Needless to say I was surprised, in a good way. I used the advice you always give and dropped $150 on a detail yesterday--looks like it was well worth the investment. Might be getting an S2000, so I'll see what the Honda dealer offers.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

    Hi Terry,
I'd appreciate your guidance! Back seat just got too small for long legged kids. Bought an Element on Saturday and got (I think) badly lowballed on the trade by dealer @ $10K. Selling it myself now and would like your idea on pricing. Thanks!

Need help with a realistic price for a 2002 Forester S with the premium package
    73K miles
5 speed with the usual subie 2.5L 4cyl
    White with Gray cloth interior
    huge sunroof
    6 cd changer
    heated seats, mirrors and wipers
    Very clean inside
a couple of door dings otherwise spotless exterior
    Denver Metro area
    tires 25% worn
    original brakes+clutch
well maintained with all service records available

    thanks!

I ran the NADA Average trade-in v the Kelly Blue Book and see a difference of about $1500. Would really like to figure out the true trade in value for my:
    Boston, MA
1999 Subaru Legacy Sedan GT Limited 30th Anniversary (I think KBB does not have this exact model in their database)
    2.5 liter/AWD/manual
    101,000 miles
    Silver exterior, gray leather interior
    Alloy rims, power sunroof
Interior is perfect. Hardly ever used the backseat, keep very good care of front. Looks like new
Exterior has a few minor flaws but nothing significant
    Brand New tires
Rear Brakes about 80%, Front Brakes 50%
Have regular oil changes every 3500+ miles
Within past 2 years, new alternator, timing belt, clutch
Car runs very well but expecting first child soon and thinking of trading in for new car..but really like this one.

I'm going back tomorrow afternoon to do the deal. Took it by a Honda dealer this evening and they started at $18,3. I told them that Carmax put $21 on it. They said that the Carmax deal was too good, and we didn't even bother negotiating--I don't blame them. I'm very pleased with having $500 positive equity 26 months into a 39 month lease after putting $0 down (just first payment and security deposit). Actually, that $500 covers my security deposit, so it's really a break even situation. I'll still take it.

..... Nope .. I didn't see the CPO, maybe it was the Merlot ... so now the price turns from good, to excellent ........

..... **I took the Z to CarMax today and they offered $21 even. Needless to say I was surprised**

If they offered $21 "real money", then you need to be there ... that lousy $150 probably picked you up another $900/$1,100(?) ..... not bad, I wish I could do that in the stock market ....

Thanks for the update ................... :)

    Terry, please help...

    Indianapolis, IN
2000 BMW 323i rwd sedan - original owner
    2.5L I6, 5 spd manual
    88,000 miles
    titanium silver/black leather
Sport/Premium pkg (16x7.0 alloys, sport suspension, fog lights, power front seats, multi-function steering whl, cruise, sunroof, wood trim, trip computer), xenon, cd, heated seats
Interior: perfect; Exterior: few minor stone chips front of hood... also, rear bumper cover replaced due to driving over piece of steel in road size of baseball bat -- steel bounced up and shattered plastic cover... not rear-ended, no other damage, no insurance claim & nothing on Carfax. No swirl marks in paint, as it has always been hand washed.
    ===================================

Your my hero, great description .........!

Indy side ...... we have an 00 BMW 323i 4dr .. we got 90k, it's a handshaker, good color combo, sport/prem pack, slider, blinders, bun warmers, a baby kiss to the bumper, the rubber and stoppers are newish and based on what your saying, the service is complete with no paintwork - >>>"No swirl marks in paint, as it has always been hand washed" --- that's called: pride of ownership ...

........ well, if it's as nice as you think it is .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $9's, maybe the low low low low $10's if it needs -0- .. the handshaker and miles will hold this one back ....... I'm guessing your going down Retail Rd.? ... $12,900 *asking* and kick and cry at $11,5/$12,0 - but take it - and you throw in the snowmobile tires .......

let me know how it goes ............ :shades:

OK, no links, no explanations, just the down and dirty today, Terry. Here they are ... looking for trade and private sale on both:

    '98 S70 T5 automatic, 110K miles, funky coral red
    cowskins, slider, bun warmers, etc.
Let's call it fair condition (I like to think its clean for its age, but it does have its share of light scratches). OH, and let's not forget that $2K kiss to one fender a couple years back. But I'm pretty sure I'd try to sell this one myself.

'04 350Z Touring 6-speed, 15K miles, silver over orange leather

Payoff is about $11K, so it looks like I'm OK there. I'll take a look on ebay about the cap - hadn't really thought about that. No other issues, just needs a detail. Thanks. Rich

Terry, hope all is going well with your dog dancing classes.

All LT equipment plus tow package, Captains Chairs, Third Seat, Single CD, moonroof, DVD screens in four headrests, and what looks like a dealer installed "wood package" on the dash, steering wheel, and door panels. #2 2002 GMC Yukon XL SLT 2WD, 5.3 V8, Black (I know) w/Tan leather, 21K miles. Capt Chairs, Third Seat, Rear A/C, Single CD player, Factory DVD player.
No moonroof. VIN 1GKEC16Z12R326823. Internet Price is $24,700

And could you give me an update on the possible trade/retail rd value for the Expedition: 1999 Black 2WD XLT. 85K miles w/rebuilt 4.8 V8, front and rear AC, 6 disc CD, tan leather, third row seat, power pedals, no moonroof. Condition? Never won a french fry invasion.

    Thanks in advance.

We are looking into leasing a 2005 Honda Pilot. We are $1,000 upside down in our current car/possible trade-in. We are talking to 2 different/competing Honda dealers. Is it possible to play them against each other for our trade-in. We did it with the lease offer. They are highly competitive wit each other. Thank you for your time! :D
