It's in the NE corner of the Seahawk state, north of Spokane.
It's a base DX minivan (base as in manual windows and locks). Basically automatic transmission and air is all it has. It has the 2.5L V6.
It's a metallic teal and has 41K easy miles. Paint is good but has a few chips on the bumper. A few dork dings but nothing major. The interior is clean.
Newer tires. Brakes are original, but okay.
I was able to locate the following offer here in the central Texas area. The carfax is clean, and the car looks like its in good condition - one tiny ding, but no scratches, hail damage or anything else showing. Please tell me what price would be right for this? The owner noted the following.

A friend at a dealer looked up wholesale transactions based on the VIN and came to an average of $16,450. Lots of numbers...Terry are these dealers giving me a fair shake?

Let me "Splain" the situation you're in ....
1.) Honda dealers think there's "Honda", then the rest of the world (not knockin' any Honda dealers) so their view get's a little skewed ...
2.) *for future reference* .. when your buddy pulls the "average" wholesale transactions, that figure can really go out of whack because it's based on all the immediate transactions that have run thru in the last 20/30 days, and that could be a bunch of high milers or a majority of super cleans or maybe a bunch of busted out rentals that came in the last week and that changes the curve ... it's kinda like going to 1 golf course in your life and seeing plaid shorts and thinking everyone must wear "plaid shorts" .... got it.? (I only spent this time explaining this because of a dealer friend that's $255,000 flipped in his inventory and I had to "splain" it to him last week) ..
3.) "in this particular case" your friend is pretty close (and lucky) because the *average* can be off by $800 or $2,000 .. it depends on what month, what week and what Jessica Simpson is wearing that day ..
4.) now that I bored you (and myself) into a coma .... there's no such thing as "excellent" - unless you're drivin' an 06 Audi A4 Cabriolet with 900 miles on it..
Soooo, that means ..... the miles are a little tall, but if the vehicle is clean, no visitation rights to Maaco, no Jack Daniel dents in the rear door, no curb burners and the KFC Corporation isn't lookin' for half of their bags in your back seat .... then trade side, in and around the super tall $15's low/mid $16's ..... you need to look at your "difference" figure to know were you stand in the deal ....

Looking to trade this 1999 Hondy Odyssey EX in on something new (not another Honda).

Major Options: All standard equipment that came with the EX model (nothing additional added except aftermarket tint on the front windows). EX model included power doors, traction control system, color-coded mirrors/doors, etc.
Condition: Good. Typical minivan usage (yes, Cheerios are evident) but not abused. Dealer maintained. Small ding (half dollar size) in rear lifgate (probably can be fixed by Dent-Pro). No accidents.
Tires - Probably <50% on a a set of Goodyear Regatta II's (never liked these shoes).
Brakes- Good condition but coming up for replacement soon.
Other - Needs 90,000 mile service done as "Maintenance Required" light is on.

Umm neither.... Some of the West Coast guys use KBB I hear, but as a rule they don't consider the values in it close to gospel.
A car is worth, to me, on a wholesale level, whatever another dealer/wholesaler/auction will pay me for it.. regardless of what KBB/NADA says. NADA as a rule is a joke, some of their numbers are beyond laughable.
It's a good book to keep around tho... banks loan on a %age of NADA values.
The 2 books I actually use are Galves and BlackBook. Galves will sell their books to the public but people usually hate to see what they say, whether or not it's the closest thing to accurate out there.

Condition: Fair to good. Small ding on hood, paint looks good. Wheels are flaking (see it all of the time on these). Interior is avg for age, not hovered in, but not filthy.
Tires: ~5000 mi on brand new Mich Pilots
Brakes: Just serviced, new pads and rotors
Maintenance: Oil every 5k, 90K service (timing belt, water pump, etc.) done.
Other: This is where it gets ugly . Rearended another vehicle at ~40mph, no frame or engine damage, replaced front fenders, hood, grill, etc. Repair looks near perfect to my eyes (got it done at same place that does BMW/Lexus work), everything lines up really well.
Looking to trade for an '06 CRV...wife really likes 'em! No payoff...
Update: Pulled the trigger yesterday on '06 CRV SE (automatic, of course). Carmax offered $4000 (couldn't tell it had been in an accident, but I told them...they would have offered $5500 without that info). Dealer offered $4500 and invoice + $398 doc fee + tag/taxes on '06.
I think I got a good deal, what say you?

Has the 4-cyclinder engine with the auto tranny.
No accidents but it did have to have a window replaced (the drivers window, I think) after it was broken in to. No damage to the interior.
I looked at this car yesterday and it was exactly the car I've been looking for the past week or so. Unfortunately, I don't think the owner has been taking care of it and the exterior leaves a lot to be desired.

Condition: front bumper has corner smashed in a little, minor scratches and swirls like on any average car, but this has a few chips (5mm x 2mm) on the driver side door, along with several longer scratches, and to top it all off, what looks almost to be the beginnings of a game of tic-tac-toe on the hood right down to the metal. I figure you could spend $1000 on repairing this stuff and it probably still wouldn't be up to snuff.
Tires, brakes seem to be good - let's assume the rest is ok mechanically until I get it checked out throughly.
We're only $500 apart on the price, but I'm assuming another $1000 on repairing the exterior - at least. The thing is, this is only the 2nd one of these (in this color, with the options, with the manual) I've seen since I started looking last week (the other one was already sold). Could you give me some guidance with what its accurate price might be?

There seems to be a rash of car buyers here lately obsessed with really beat-up, high mileage vehicles......
P.S. you can always try searching on fee-bay if you absolutely have to have a Blue, manual whatever with Heliconical Limited Slips. Like that TV ad where a guy finally finds his AMC Lime Green Hatchback.
A dark colored car with a black interior and a manual transmission in So Cal heat and traffic? No wonder you haven't seen too many! I owned a black Mustang with a 5 speed when I lived in OC. I'll never do that again.
Does the owner have any receipts or paperwork showing regular maintenance? You are probably not too far off with your assessment that it needs $1000 (at least) to get it decent. Has the owner spent any money on it recently?
I'm with WOODYWW right now, the car doesn't sound too good. Lots and lots and lots of imports in So Cal. I say keep looking unless this car checks out. And check it out you should. At the very least take it to an independent Nissan shop and pay for a pre-purchase inspection. It might be worth $100 to find out you'll have to spend $2000 on repairs.

Believe me, I've search high and low on the online world, and have found only one other car like this, and that one had already sold by the time I called them.
18700 miles. Loaded (obviously). Great shape. (few scratches on the inside of the trunk, that's it).
On sale at a Nissan dealer for $23000.
I made an offer of $20,500 OTD, and they finally agreed, if I bought it last night. I said I needed to bring my wife back tonight, and they said OK.
Is that a good price?
I basically tried to figure out the trade in value (I went with the 18K value of a car in "Good" condition on KBB. Added about 500 + tax, tag and title (1500-2000 in my area). Is that proper?

Quickly here ..... your kinda all over the place on these picks, so lets start all over for a minute ...
1.) It doesn't make any difference what the price of a vehicle is if it has a "hinky" history ... why spend time lookin' and negotiating if it just came out of Billy Bob's Body and Barbeque Shoppe .. pull a Carsmack on the intended targets, it will cut down on a whole lot of the "Price is Right" stuff.
2.) When they check out, always have the Big Daddy "come to Jesus" techno top-of-line best reputation mechanic waiting in the wings - and that means get off the wallet and spend the $150ish for a close "look see" ...
3.) I forgot what I was saying ...... :P
Oh yeah ..... 04 Honda 4dr 4 banger LX with 27k and a handshaker .. if it's nice and clean with a good history, rubber is strong, the interior doesn't look like a fallout shelter from the 50's, no Dutch Boys (or little of) and the service is 100% ....... then some dealer probably hit it at the tall $13's low low $14's because of the meat clever, plus the miles are a tinge high ....... $15,500..? .. eh', he ain't going to Hawaii to watch the Mercedes Open on that money .. start him at $14,5 (nicely) and you guys will probably finish up in that $15 range .. it might be a nice vehicle with the color, ABS and the side balloons .... safety first.

As far as the receipts, he has a few here and there, but not a complete collection. And if I decide to move forward, having it checked out by a mechanic is/was always a must.
And if it does check out mechanically, after some thought I think the highest I'll go is $11.5, pending some calls to bodyshops to get a better idea of the costs of repair. Thoughts?

I'm thinking, you may be the only person he'll ever get to offer $11K. He may be lucky to get $10K. I put it into the Edmunds Used Car Appraiser, & trade in value is almost $11K for one in nice condition. But I put in "rough" condition, & it deducted $2800, = $9K.
The only thing that would be more nuts than this guy holding out for $11.5, would be someone paying anywhere close to that. IMO.
Is touch-up not appropriate for a 2.5" x 2.5" scratched area? The entire hood will definitely have to be repainted? And doing so will absolutely lower the value, right?
You're right - I get $11,829 for trade-in for one in "clean" condition with the appropriate mileage, zip, and options. $10,268 for "average", and $9,074 for "rough". Add about $1000 for private party value. Reading the descriptions of the classifications, this one may be closer to "average", but I don't really know.
And I'm willing to pay a premium too for this particular color/options/manual combo - the other one I referenced had sold for $13k at a dealership last week and if that offer was made to me right now, I'd take it.
Was it listed for 13k, or do you know for sure it sold for 13k? There may be a difference between asking and closing prices... Good luck in your Maxima quest, nice cars (vastly superior IMO to the post-2003 ones. But 1995-1999 - called ugly by many - is my favorite.)
I guess my premise is that--if you're a car nut, obsessed with a particular model, make, whatever, hold out for a nice one. Or, if it needs a lot of work, make sure you know that the price you're paying reflects that. And really good body or paint work is complicated, & expensive--it's not like just figuring out the price to get new brakes or exhaust. At least, find one of the best body shops in your area & take it to them for an appraisal before you do the deal. The $13K one--if it was really nice--might be worth $thousands more than the one you're looking at.
I don't really know anything about the demand for scratched-up, stick, blue, black interior cars in L.A. But I have to believe that all of those are turn-offs for 99% of all car buyers. I'd wait this guy out while you do more research & looking. Or expand your search for different colors/models/makes.

Yeah, I was thinking about a 4th gen, but I thought the front really showed its age with the shape of headlights (yes, and I know many think the headlights on the 5th gen are ugly). But they are supposed to handle better than the 4th gens. As for the post-2003 ones - forget 'bout it.

IMO, too expensive for an S60, with all the incentives on the new ones. If it is an 80, probably a rare bird.

95-99 vs. 2000+ handling - didn't the Maxima go from IRS to a live axle in 2000? If true, that would definitely not improve the handling; you may want to investigate this.

Due to the reduced price of the 2.5T (for similar horsepower numbers), I think the 2.9 non-turbo was really uncommon in 2004, and they axed the 2.9 completely for 2005, but the T6 was/is still available.

That said, you reeeeeally need to know cars when you go to these things and you're going to have very limited time to look close, plus no history ..... why is there some overspray by the firewall.? how come the fabric is lower on the inside trunk area on the drivers side.? does it leak oil.? does the air blow cold.? why is the paint on the passenger side pillar rough and shiny.? etc, etc, etc .... the Sunday come to meetin' auctions are really going to head you into the Retail zone ...
Study the local papers, make some neighborhood runs and do some calls, I think you'll be much better off ....

But take heart, the issues I have had with it are all with the engine and trans which are not shared with the 2.5T AWD. The 2.9s mainly sold in the south and were rare. 04 T6s are rare, 05 T6s were gone by about March or so of 2005.
OK, so we have a 2004 AWD with a pile of miles on it. If the car is nice, figure it's worth $20-21k on a trade with those miles. Last I looked they were doing like $23k at the sale with miles in the teens.. on an 04 there's a big pile of a difference between 15-17k and 33k. If they use Galves and are the typical nitwith Northeast dealer who thinks it's the Bible they put $21k on it after spanking it for miles and adding for leather. I think Galves hits this car way off myself.. $22,100 with 26k? Uhh, no.
So let's assume they hit it at $21,000. The Volvo Certification costs $1,250 if I recall on an 80, the inspection hits them for 4 hours of labor plus repairs.. figure pads/rotors and a coupel tires.. that's a grand... soaking wet if they are buried they have $23-23,500 in the car. $25k or so ought to buy it. $28k requires some real creative thinking on both parts. But full marks for trying.
The 2.5T AWD is a nice car but too slow for me.. but the T6 is a pile of trash.
Or $9900/bo in the paper if you clean it up nice and I bet it finds a new home quick.
