I spoke with the local Toyota dealer today. They are going to reply tomorrow, said they might offer excellent value on a trade. I just want to get rid of it now that it's worth nothing. Thanks for your advice. I'm going to talk to National Toyota if no resolution from the dealer.

The deal is done at 19500 (Car also had a spoiler) I think he had to pay $500 more than what I would have liked but it is a premium he had to pay for the SUPERclean honda...!! Also he will not loose big chunk immediately as the MY2002 has just started ! Original Invoice on EX V6 for 2000 was 22,222 + $400 for the spoiler + 500/700 as a profit depending on the area. In our area V6 are going atleast $1000/$1500 more than blue book or Edmunds price due to demand

Thanks Again. Ya I really need a Honda store...I have helped atleast 25 friends buy used/new Honda !! :-))

We all just wanted to give you and Bill, a big "thank you" for the help on the Acura 3.2TL. (our neighbors too!)

We went to the Lexus dealer on the other side of town and got $18,000 at first, so we said we will think about it, and went for lunch. The other dealer that offered $16,500, called on Bobs cell while we were out and said they could "entice" us with $17,500. Bob laughed, and said he just got $18,000 from their competiton and was going back there after lunch.
They offered $18,500 on the phone! What happened to $16,500? I guess it doesn't matter, we finished are lunch, drove across the street got a great discount on the 430, and the dealer matched the $18,500 from the first dealer!

    Thanks Again!

....... I think you did great on the Honda ..

I'm paying for the "super nice" ones, like the the one you have just described in the "ultra high" $17's or the low $18's.

So figure by the time I pay the auction fee's $275, transport $125, a detail $125 and some minor service and/or other junk that needs to be done .. I'm in and around, that easy $18,500 figure. On the retail end, the dealer will "pack" the vehicle a nick, so when it's all said and done ..$19 ...Then I gotta sell it for a profit.

I think you did good ..Real good!

Here in NJ, you pay the sales tax at DMV when you transfer the title, which you need to do in order to register the car.

    Maybe I misunderstood the post?

    ....... I don't think sooooo....!

    The high $22's mean ... $22/7/8/$22,9 ...

Would I have streched to $30,500 ....Hmmm, maybe on a pre-sold, only because, of the time of the year would I have held back -- now if the market stays static in Jan, then I would be all over that puppy dog..

This morning while waiting for my ride (dropped off the Focus for yet another recall) I was walking through the used car lot and happened upon a 2002 Ford Escape XLT 4x4. This car was Dark Shadow Grey (meaning it rolled out of the factory less than 2 months ago) and had 116 miles on it. It has leather, moonroof, side airbags, and the side-step bars. I couldn't tell if it had the Mach Stereo (but it did have the 6-disc in-dash changer).

I figure that with the mileage and the color, it can't be a lemon or a dealer buyback. The salesman said that they bought it from a Canadian leasing company.

What would a fair price be on this car (sorry but this forum is the closest I can find for this question)? I'm in the Chicago area, if that helps.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Great name ...! I should use this on the next post about "handshakers" ..l.o.l.

You say it's Canadian, is it new ..? with MSO.. (Birth Certificate) or is this a used vehicle bought by the dealer ..?

Let's just say it's been titled, and let's say it's Canadian ... they probably have it at $25,900 on the retail side, and on the wholesale side ... they probably have paid in and around $21ish or so -- these Canadian vehicles (Escapes) get bought at the auctions just like the US stuff, what the heck..they are built in Windsor.

......... Hey everyone ...look, it's a Auto... Yeh!

These are nice trucks .. people luv em'. Plus you have "all" the stuff on it, V6, and new tires ...

Depending on the dealer you will get, "in and around" $13,5/$14 for it.. and on the retail end, drop it in the Tribune and "ask" $16,900 (must sell)... I doubt you will have it a weekend, if you don't get to greedy --- that's if it's nice, clean, and looks like a 2000.

    Good Luck ...

    Terry.
  • tiredofmanualtiredofmanual Member Posts: 338
I would assume that it's been titled, otherwise I can't imagine why they would put a car with 116 miles on it on the used car lot. When I pick up my car, I'm going to look to see if the speedo is in mph or kph. Maybe the salesman was blowing smoke about it being Canadian?

    Hi Bill,

    Porsche Boxster
    Color - Blk or Blue
    Year - '97 to '00
Miles - about 10k per year

Can you recommend other good wholesale price guides? I was told Galves is the most used by dealers.

    Thanks again
  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
It is $250 fixed for a vehicle newer than 1992 with less than $15,000 price tag !! & normal 6.75% if it is greater than $15000 ! So you CAN save quite a bit of tax on private purchases !!
  • agt_cooperagt_cooper Member Posts: 202
Here in the grand Commonwealth of Virginia, tax is paid on the price paid for the vehicle. Usually, the "price paid" is recorded on the title when being handed over from seller to buyer. Many times, the buyer would ask the seller to write in a lower price to save on taxes.

Nowadays, I think the state DMV has figured out this scam and can use Blue Book values if they think the amount written on the title is unreasonably low.

It is very interesting to learn all the details from other states around the country....so far, it just confirms my feeling that Virginia is screwing her residents when it comes to car buying!!! LOL

sobers: What state taxes used vehicles this way?
  • tboner1965tboner1965 Member Posts: 647
Illinois for one. They have some "fixed" tax rates. I honestly purchased a 1979 Ford for $100 (not one of those fake transaction, but really $100) and the sales tax was $25.

If I hadn't driven that car for three years I might have been a bit more angry about a 25% sales tax rate.

The sales tax was based on the model year, not the sales price.

...... When you see the vehicle again, ask for the keys and check the odometer ... and check the drivers door for the "Maple leaf", that will tell you if it's from our northern neighbors or not ...

    I found 2 used cars I'm interested in:(Boston area)
2001 Glant ES V4, 7k, (silver color, with ABS, but no sunroof which is mysterious because I saw those options come in package from this site) rental car, half year old, I test drove and liked it, no problem found, if I buy it, I can have it checked. I think it's probably OK, $13000, (4.5 years powertrain warranty left)
1999 Maxima GXE, auto, 40k, off lease. There's some small spots of scratches. (light brown color, with CD changer, no ABS, no other fancy options) Overall looks OK, also I will check it before buying. $13600 (only 2 year powertrain warranty left)
The dealer bought them from auction. My question is what's the price they are paying for these cars and are the prices good enough for me to buy? Which one is a better buy? Thanks for help!

Buy the Maxima. More power, better reliability, better resale, and more room.

I'm trying to find a replacement for a friend who has a rather weathered 89 Honda Civic....he wants a 99-01 Golf.
I'm seeing them on autotrader.com and in the paper here in Chicago for like $12-17k. This sounds like a 'no deal' to me, since brand new ones are $15-19k (this for a GLS automatic w/alloys and roof). These (and the perennial sorority girl Jettas) are very popular here in Chicago. Bill and Terry, are these selling that well in your areas? Thanx.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ..... Good morning again..l.o.l.

I was at the large Audi/VW auction this week, and I saw probably 80/90 of em' run... they get the money, that's for sure. More so on the Jettas and Passats, but those Golfs ring the bell once and awhile --- as a whole, they seem to be popular all over right now.

2000 GLS's are doing in and around the high $12's/ low $13's, if they are clean and mileage in the low 20's..

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... The Galants are all over the place, the Rental car agency's are dropping em' of by the dozens..all and all, there not a bad vehicle. Personally I like the body style ..The old style was a joke (in my own stupid opinion)..

These are going through the blocks right now, for "around" the $10's -- So a good deal for you would be the high $11's..low $12's on the push.

Maxima's are great vehicles.. run all day long ..Zoomer is right, it's a better vehicle, re-sale ..etc. Even with the miles, the Maxima is a GREAT price... have it checked out, and go from there ..

    Terry.

It is $250 if the used vehicle is less than $15,000.

    Bill - (and everyone)
Need some further advice about the tmu. The local dealer (Modern Toyota Winston-Salem, NC) offers $11,000 trade and any vehicle at invoice from the dealerships they own (Nissan, Toyota, Infiniti, Chevrolet). OR they offered to locate another 99Camry for me with similar miles/features and trade out the car for nothing. There's no way to roll the odometer forward. The car had 21,500 when they changed the odometer without my consent to fix a trivial sticking of the speedometer and now has 800 on the new odometer. It's going to be hard to find a three year old car with those miles. It is a 4cyl LE, alloy wheels, sunroof, power drive seat, keyless entry, CD, cassette. Perfect condition, I bought it new. I don't think the dealer would offer to try and find me another car if they didn't feel they had done something wrong. My gripe is I could sell my car for more especially as a one owner, but now I can't because of the tmu thing so I feel I should be compensated for that. Also, the general manager says $11,000 is a generous trade in which I disagree with (several other dealers have offered $7000 due to the odometer thing). I have spoken with an attorney who thinks I have a good case - anyone have any other suggestions before I sue this dealer?
    Thanks in advance.
    SDT

PS - this is my 3rd Camry and my LAST after I phoned Toyota USA and was told the dealer is a "President's award winner" and they have nothing further to offer than what the general manager told me. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was in THAT!! I would have thought Toyota had much better customer service.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ All vehicle's go back to Zero, when a Odo is changed ... they punch the door with the Federal statement, which shows mileage going in .. and miles going out ... vehicles like this are sold all day long with little or no problem unless you can't present the "actual" paper work .. which by the way will be on the Toyota computer forever...

It seems like to me .. the dealer is doing his best and then some ..

I've got a red 1992 Mazda MX-6 DX (low trimline), manual, 119,000 miles.
No dings, a few scratches (one close encounter with a parking deck support pylon).
A/C has given up the ghost (probably needs new compressor, not sure).
No other mechanical problems, but it will need a new timing belt and 120K service soon.

Not sure whether it's better to sell it or donate it. I'm thinking I could get $1500-2K in trade.

    Is this ballpark?

    Thanks!

I asked Bill this question but since you were just at a VW sale, I'll ask you too.

My bro has a '00 GTI GLS that he wants out of. It's the 1.8L turbo, 5 speed, all the options like leather, roof, Monsoon. 24K miles in Charlotte. It's that metallic bright orange color on black leather. He's put on a set of 17" wheels and tires. Car's in fab condition.

Local dealers are hitting him at $14k. It may not be the car of choice for young Charlottians, deep in the heart of NASCAR country - - it's originally from So Cal where I think it would sell in two seconds.

He'd like $17k for it. Any chance? Close???

    Actually,

I think they are being more than fair with you.

I know that the car is, through no fault of your own, now a "tmu" car. But, things happen.

Sounds to me like theyre trying to make you happy here.

... How are you tonight ..?

I think Bill is about right ... there may be a "tinge" more, but I'm not standing on front of it ... $17($16,950) would be a great Retail figure, and probably wouldn't take long to get the high $15's/ low $16's for it.

Thanks for Terry and Zoomer for advice, I bought the Glant anyway. Mainly because of the warranty. It's good enough for me and I don't care a lot for my car, so I'd better have warranty. On the other hand, I don't know how the previous owner of Maxima treated the car, so the risk is bigger. The price for Glant is around 12000 for 1 year old Glant rental car, I figured that my car is only half year old and the mileage is low, so it's worth the extra money, at least I'm confident to buy it. I can even start from the first oil change and do all the service needed. If it has 17K on it, I won't buy it even for 12000. Thanks for all advices.

Jeez, pretty soon I'll be like Sobers and Qwalls.....

Thanks to both Terry and Bill for the VW numbers. They are almost exactly what his local dealers are telling him.

OK, here's one more for our esteemed pair:

1997 Nissan Pathfinder XE, 2WD, auto, 31K miles, dark green, grey cloth, A/C, CD system, basic power goodies, decent tires, excellent condition, clean CarFax, local trade in... lady driven..... suburban owner.... yada...yada..yada. In Charlotte.

Dealer's asking $13,900ish. Your thought as to auction and a fair buying price?

How did I get into this? :-)
  • dardson1dardson1 Member Posts: 696
and unlike most questions I ask here, didn't really get a satisfactory answer. Just to make things simple, I'm going to use Edmund's TMV values. I want to trade a vehicle with a TMV trade value of 23k for a new one with a TMV of $31k. Where I live I pay sales tax on the trade difference.......$480 in this case. If I sell my car myself, then purchase the new one I pay $1860 in sales tax. Before I put the first ad in the paper I gotta get an additional $1380 just to break even. There is $3680 difference between TMV trade value and retail. Subtract the $1380 sales tax penalty and it's $2300. Edmund's "private party" sale suggest I could get a bit over $1300 more than in a trade which would actully put me in the hole.
If I wanna make an extra $1000 I gotta get mighty close to dealer TMV retail for the car which doesn't count a month's ad $ or my time. Rules is rules, and everybody says SELL YOUR OWN CAR! I say there are exceptions. I doubt I can do any better selling my car privately.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
When your car is worth more, the tax savings can offset any advantage to selling the car yourself. You generally come out ahead selling yourself when your car is less expensive, and the tax savings is minimal.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    1) You have another keg in credits, thanks man! :))

    2) That PF is like.. ohh.. $10-11K if its perfect and has no miles.

    Shoot for $12K

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Exactly.

The problem is, when you start getting into higher $$ trades.. you do get to a level of diminishing returns.

Looks at guys like Ray and Mike. They sells Jags, Infinitis..etc.

Think about a $50K trade-in! You start getting real close to losing money via a private sale.

I think it boils down to what you have.

Some cars will easily sellfor a premium, some are always dogs.

...... There is a bunch of times, that trading can be an advantage..or at least, close enough for "Horsehoes and Hand grenades" ..

The guy that posted back a few, on the 99 Acura 3.2TL was a great example..

They got $18,500 (real money) on the trade, so they probably saved $1,100 in taxes...So, that's the same as getting $19,600 on the retail side.. not bad, sometimes it works, and sometimes you eat pudding instead of steak.l.o.l.
