I bought a black car in Georgia with a 5-speed. Lol. I might need to relocate just to sell the car.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Glad to help.

Theyre cheap here, but not all have heated seats..

Nice car, I think it looks great in Black myself.

    Uhh..

Thats not a good resale color. Brilliant Silver, Smoke Silver (Now aka Desert Silver) Black up north.. they always do well.

Reds, Blues, Greens are more to the whims of the market.

Kind of curious on the trade-in value on the above car. All the standard R/T equipment; full power, autostick, 3.5 engine with performance suspension, brakes, steering, exhaust, 8 speaker CD, cassette, etc. For options, has keyless entry, power seat, and moonroof. Slate gray with dark grey interior, 16,000 miles. Located in Ohio.

Has one cosmetic parking block rash on the lower driver's side front fascia, will fix as part of a package deal on some minor work getting done on my 67 Galaxie 500 XL convertible.

Love the car, but local Chrysler dealer is already offering 2002 300M's at $6,500 off list, and would be nice to have leather and heated seats.

Paid $20,400 brand new ($6,500 off list) about 13 months ago, I'm guessing around $15,000 trade, which means it ain't going to happen.

P.S. Wish they still made the Galaxie, only with some modern conveniences. Can fix that car with a K-mart tool kit.

    Hmm.

Terry likes this more than I do.

I like it at no more than $9K. $8,500 hit me in the head.

    Yah.

$3,400? And a good deal on the new?

    A) Grab Checkbook.

    B) Write check.

    C) Drive new car home.

    D) Be happy because they paid ya $400 over market for your trade and ya did well on the new car.

    :)

    Umm :(

I'm about to ruin your day I'm afraid.

Feel free to throw bricks this way, I'll duck..

    $15,000? Umm.. umm...

    No.

Youre closer to $12,500-13K 'on a push' methinks. I'd like to see Terry hit it tho.

........ Ooooh, another vehicle we never get to talk about..I like these.

I had one for about 3 months, loved it!.GREAT road car..!

It's the right color -- What, No leather..? No heated seats..? No Infinity..?

Now I know why your trading.. If you are lookin' at a 300M make sure you test drive one..WITH and Without a sport suspension, you may not prefer one - personally I didn't like it with...Go to Spitzer, they will let you drive one, til' the cows comes home ...

Donnie, will probably hit this vehicle around $13ish..it's got the slider and no miles.

    Terry.

    ....... It's a .. La' Coupe'..01, it's got about 6,800 klicks on it .. it had 2,800 when I got it, needs a oil change, now that I read this..l.o.l.

I went to see the car last night. It drives fine. The clutch seems to be in good shape even though it has never been replaced (to the current owner's knowledge). The only problems with the car are:

    1. The paint on the hood and the sunroof have faded to a dull red compared to the rest of the car.

    2. There are some rust bubbles on the lower part of both doors

    3. The hatch squeaks constantly (owner says that she will replaced the hatch support pillars (which don't work anymore).

    4. The tires need to be replaced (owner says that she will do this before Saturday).

The car has a whole wad of service records (mostly oil changes) and the timing belt was replaced at 100,000 miles. The car now has 150,000 miles. We somewhat settled on the $2600-$2,750 range with new tires and the squeaking gone by Saturday. This is contingent upon my visual inspection on Saturday during the daytime. She said she had been offered about $1000 on trade by dealers and the car has been on the market for about 2 months with no serious takers. So where do I go from here? I am going to talk to my body shop about repainting later today. Thanks in advance!
  • jsylvesterjsylvester Member Posts: 572
I'd throw bricks, but facts are facts.

Love the car, has all the performance parts of the 300M with the sports package, but the $5,000 between the R/T and the 300M is mostly in the interior. Didn't offer leather or infinity in the R/T until 2001, as 2000 was the first model year for one. Coming from a 92 Taurus, it was an stunning step up.

Thing will haul, had it over 100 mph and still pulling hard when I started worrying about Ohio's finest....

Now I know why my buddies always buy 2 year old domestics, and drive the heck out of them. We are all accountants, so depreciation is near and dear to our hearts!
  • suvshopper4suvshopper4 Member Posts: 1,110
thel: I would tell the CRX Si seller to NOT replace the tires, but drop the price - that way you get to put on new shoes that YOU like.

And the hood and sunroof may rub out or buff back to a decent shine. I'd try this before repainting. Upper-facing surfaces oxidize first, but that doesn't mean the paint is no longer good.

....Sonny and Shopper have the right idea..

Off the top of my stupid head: Sears is having a big sale on tires right now, 4 for $140 bucks

If the paint wasn't a little faded, I would be a little suspect. -- The rust bubbles can be sanded out, filled and shot for $50/60 bucks. A quality detailer can have that rest of the thing lookin' like a diamond for around $80.

The back hatch is a Squeekin' .. they all do that (just ask a Aztek owner..l.o.l), and can be adjusted somewhat for $50 bucks or less.

You give me about 5 hrs: on a detail, with a high speed buffer and some X-14 glaze, a trip to Sears for new tires and a oil change..and the adjustment on the hatch -- BINGO = $4950..and I will take $4,1/$4,3/$4,500 .... and not a penny less -- It would look like the Lemmings running to the sea, on this car.

All kidding aside, remember, this is going to be your vehicle .. not ours. So you must be happy with it today, tommorow and next month --- Have them take off the $2/$3/$400 (if that what makes you happy) ... and go from there..

Good Luck...and I want a report in the morning!

    Terry.

    ps. you are welcome Alyce.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Yep, I forgot about the upgrade in 01, but that's what I drove an 01.. and I liked it - A lot.

Remember if you trade in Ohio, you pay tax on the difference..right..?

To use a number..if they hit you at $13, you would save $7/$8/$900 just on the tax... depending on the county... then your at just about $14 .. sounds good to me.

    Good hunting...

    Terry.
  • thelthel Member Posts: 767
The Sears web site was various tires (185/60R14) ranging from $90 (Dunlops) - $45 (Vipers) per tire.

Terry, I get your message about not stressing out over a couple of hundred bucks and agree. Thank you for the wonderful advice about fixing it up. I will report back when I have more info.

    Hi All,

I was wondering what I can expect a clean 99 A4 to do at auction.

    Thanks

It's a silver Florida car. About 30K miles.

    Thanks again.

Hey all. I'm posting this question here since it seems to be the most active board for those in the biz.

I'm trying to purchase a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro 5spd. I've been dealing with a guy who says he can source them at a dealer's auction (Mannheim Atlanta Auto Auction, to be specific). He will buy the car for an $800 flat fee.

He has been faxing me copies of the pre-sales inventory and says that I can check the cars out ahead of time, but cannot be present the day of the auction.

A couple of things make a bit hinkey about getting into bed with this guy. First, the prices for the above mentioned car--he says they are going for about 26.5K across the block. That seems pretty high to me. When challenged, he says "well, that's for an automatic, a standard will be a few thousand less".

Second, when I asked about being present at the auction, he says that they used to allow it, but some buyers brought some kids with them who got hurt and it was an insurance thing, so NOW the Auction doesn't allow 'outsiders'.

Now both these things sound pretty fishy to me. In fact, I think I'm answering my own question here, but I'd like to get your advice--are 'outsiders' ever allowed to attend these auctions? Are the prices quoted anywhere near what these cars are doing across the block?

    Thanks in advance!

    Jon

    1.8? 2.8? Quattro? Handshaker? Autobox?

Equipment? (I.E. Is anything glaring mising like a roof or leather?)

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    $26,500? I'm thinking $23,500 more like..

    Maybe he meant a 2.8?

1.8T Quattros.. 01s.. those are not common cars either. Manheim Market Report shows 3 being sold last month.

    Nationwide.

And hes right about retail customers. Could he get away with it? Prolly. Do you guys often tend to say the wrong things a lot while youre at the sale and can we get banned for bringing you in?

    Yup.

What kinds of wrong things are said?

    Just curious.

  • uhclem6uhclem6 Member Posts: 10
I figured that amateurs weren't allowed at the auction. I guess my reason for mistrust is the explanation--I'd prefer the guy was straight up with me rather than saying 'it's an insurance thing'. He went on a bit on this to sell me on it. If I'm not allowed at the auction itself, why would I be allowed to look at the vehicles during the pre-sales showing?

The other thing is that the price he's quoting seems high. I was specific about the 1.8 model (and I thought he was too).

I can see some benefit to buying at auction, but I also see some serious risk. I'm just trying to calculate the balance here. All in all, I'd rather spend an extra grand or two and deal with someone straight up.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Do you recall what that 500E went for? I'm just curious. I've been watching them retail and prices are high 20's to low-mid 30's, except for the dreamers in Auto Week who want $39,990 for their '94 with 50K+ on them.
  • mateyomateyo Member Posts: 22
    Here are the gory details:

    1999 Olds Alero GL 2-door
    4 cylinder, automatic
    Red w/Pewter cloth
    Sunroof, CD & cassette combo
Cruise, power windows/locks, all usual GL gizmos except keyless entry (early production model)
5K on the tires, recent brake work
    57K miles
No paintwork, a couple of dings and gravel spots on the hood (and one on windshield)
    Decent cosmetically for the miles

Now, I know this car is no jewel as described, but there's more. Major moaning from the rear bodywork on acceleration. Wind noise from sunroof. Plus the "recirculate" setting on the A/C works sporadically.

I really want to trade this car because I can't imagine much interest in a private sale. What can I expect from a mainstream import house? (I'm in Texas.) Thanks!

"What do cars like this sell for?"

"How much can you buy me that car for?"

    ad nauseum.

Again, I hate to sound condescending, and you guys know I'm not normally so (Unless ya piss me off :) but, well, retail buyers are a big nono.. And, well, they rarely act like they belong there and tend to stand out.

And if you get blacklisted from the auctions... ouch.

As far as buying there, as logn as you know what youre doing.. youre fine.

I have a 99 Chevy Blazer LT. It has 62,000 miles, leather, heated seats, sunroof, pwr everything, towing package, under carriage package, cassette, and cd player. It has no dents, dings, or scratches. I live in New Hampshire, and get trade values ranging from 10,000-12,000. All the books, and web sites say 12,500-15,000. What is fair?

I am looking at a Buick Rendevous, had a dealer willing to sell it to me for $49 over invoice. He asked me what I wanted for my trade, and I told him 13,500. He told me if I was willing to pay more for the Buick, he could give me 13,500 for my trade. I just laughed and said the money's the same either way, and walked out. I just wish dealers would just be up front and tell me I am being unrealistic instead of trying to move figures around and pay their price... I got a laugh out of it at-least.

    thanks in advance

Where do these people go to rack up that kind of mileage on a 2000 MB??!!

If it was registered in the fall of 1999, it's about 24 months old - you're talking 3,500 miles per month. Even our sales reps don't do that kind of mileage - then again maybe they should!!

when my mom was a sales rep in the 80s, she put 50k on a new Camry in one year. Of course, I don't understand why anyone would put those miles on an S500. Nice way to lose $50-60k in two years on one car.

Brentwood asked me to post this from another board to here.....

Quick question. How related, if at all, are lease buyouts from financing company to wholesale and retail auto price?

I'm looking at Saab 9-3's - 1999. Lots coming off lease. Have spoken to no less than 7 people in the past month who told me that the financing company is willing to sell them their cars at $12-13K depending upon mileage.

Understand there are lots of factors as to why financing company wants to unload the cars. However, I wonder if this indicates current wholesale value, and therefore a few thousand $$ above that would be reasonable asking price for car.

    Thx.

....... There can be a lot of problems with some of the folks that go to em'..

I know Bill and a bunch of other dealers won't take "outsiders" to them ---- and now I understand why.

Last summer at ATL, Dallas and Denver I saw a number of Dealers with PHD's (Poppa has a Dealership) go to the auctions, with their "Hood ornaments"..Lady friends. These guys stand in the lanes, with 15/20/25 bidders and point out to their G/F, well this is worth this ..and that is worth that --- The whole time, the auctioneer is using them as "bidder".. if your hands are moving and you are pointing things out - Bang there is $100 and another $100..etc, etc,

2 off these guys are bared forever, and I think may know 1 of them out of Dallas ..(Huge Ford store)

Well anyway, it just happened to me...3 weeks ago. I take a friend (hmmm) .. some bigshot DR. to grab him a Benz, well he's all over the place -- I told him twice, in the car --"Don't stand in the Lanes" --- Don't, not even get close!

He's standing in the doorway... talking away in the truck lanes -- it kinda got pointed out to me (ouch..!)

It's bad enough to have the rookies in there, bidding all the way up to $20 grand on a $30,000 vehicle, Sooooo, I'm sure they didn't appreciate my DR. friend in there being a Jerk.

I don't tell him how to do "brain surgery" .. I surely don't need him telling me or other dealers, what the value of vehicles are ... it was a little embarrassing, so say the least.

    Red in the face ...

    Terry.

    ........ Is this thing a 2 OR 4wd..?

    Well let's go for the Gusto, and say it's a 4WD ---

Ooooh, a bunch of miles here -- Do you own a S500 too...?

Well my friend ... you will probably laugh at me to on this -- these are nice vehicles and such, and this one is all loaded up..with all the stuff.

But, all those miles are killing it... this is about a $11,500ish vehicle..and that's if it's a 4WD. I'm buying Clean to the bone, LT's with 25K for just shy of $13 ...Sorry.

    Terry.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Yeahup.

Nice truck it sounds like, but the miles just kill it.

They do sell, they are nice and all, and yours is all loaded up, but I musta seen 20 of them today alone. Gimme a week, and I bet I could buy 50-100 98 LTs.

So the miley ones go cheap. I think That $12,000 is totally killing it to death. I'd be around $11K myself, but Terry is up there where the fluffy stuff comes down so he likes it more than I :)

    Sorry...

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Yup.

SAABs go real cheap at the sales.

    If I have $15-16K in my pocket I can buy a 99 9-3 Ragtop or a base 99 9-5.

Sedans? $12K... MAYBE $13K I think, but thats nearly killing them.

Can you buy a nice Sedan for $15K or less retail with good miles? Hells Yeah!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Yeah. On that S500.. I'm thinking to be around $35K, which is close to $20K back of rouch if I am remembering right. Of course hes totally pissed off about it, but hes very "real" whenever we do business, I.E. "OK, Here's the deal, My car is $X, and your car is worth $X"

Its a guy I know well I've sold him 12 cars, just sold him an XKR ragtop, we've got a heck of a rapore.. Hes probably the only guy I'll go out and buy a $60K car for on a phone call.

Hes paid me for the XKR, but I'll cut him the cash back for the S if I can get him something for it, and I'm keeping the deal "open" for the next few days to reflect this. Hes a developer, lives in Orlando, runs back and forth between here and South Florida at least 1 time a week, also ends up running to the Tampa Area 2+ times a week. He bought it in April of 1999, so he's coming up on 3 years actually. (It was one of the first in Florida).

That'll do it!His 99 Range Rover 4.6HSE that I sold him last year with 12K on it already has like 55K on it.

Been busy in here. And you're right Bill, it would have been cheaper to do it right the first time (fill up the tub...).

    Details on the sedan:

    2000 323ia, black with grey guts, steptronic AT, 13,000 miles (1 owner, a women who moved to NYC). Car looks like new. Features include;

Sport/premium package (seats, suspension, wood, leather)
    Moonroof
    Xenons
    heated seats
    CD

    Original MSRP $35,740

Local used car dealer has it for $26,995.

Is the 24K trade est still legit with all the options at this mileage? And what would realistic retail be (considering its not a BMW certified car with the warranty).

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

What do you think a '99 626 LX with the 4cyl engine, automatic tranny and 54k miles would bring in the real world. The car is in excellent condition. 7k miles on tires. One owner car with all maintenance records and transferrable 100k Mazda bumper to bumper warranty. The car has a sunroof and power driver seat. Cloth interior. Red paint & alloy wheels.
