    ....... Great description, thanks.

The color is right, it got new tires, a slider and all the right power stuff ...

We won't get any help from the miles, there a little stiff ..but, all in all, if this is as clean as you tell us, you are probably lookin' "in and around" the $8's..

    I hope this helps..

    Terry.

..... Your from NJ, so the black is considered a hot item, plus this thing has like .."no miles"

Based on what your telling us -- this 3, is like new, new, new ... $26,900 is a fair price to ask, to say the least ... he has to have close to $25 in it, with or without warranty.

Let's say he paid $24 at the auction. auction fee $275, transport $125, check and clean..$300

This vehicle being super clean I don't feel he is asking too much, actually he is asking too little, but start him up at $25, and see what what happens (with smiles)..

Good luck...and let us know what happens.

Thanks. From talking with the owner of the lot, he is selling it for a relative of a close friend (or something along those lines), so he has the full history, etc. I think it is effectively a consignment, since the owner is moving to the big city and won't be getting a new car.

I will have to go take a looksee and go from there. If he tosses out a suitable my car + $ number, an early Xmas present for the wife (who didn't even know she wanted it).

    If I didnt know better...

Shoot. I'm just gonna wait till I see plate frames like this:

    CHICAGO, IL

    SOBERS HONDA

    ;D

The Jetta.. that a GL? $6,500-7K is where I think ya oughta be if so.

OK.. the Accord. It'd do like $14,00-14,500 across the block if its real clean.. Leather, roof.. all that junk they tend to have.

Tell em the Jetta and $8K and start em from there, but Jetta and $10K is still a good deal methinks.

What I can do ? Many of friend's friend & so on are asking me for advice due to my Honda fanatisism (spelling!!) ! Now instead of directing everybody to this board (create username etc) I am doing this service (actually mostly because I like it!!)

    I have test driven atleast 50 Hondas !! that includes S2000 & a yello 1994(93?) NSX too !!

Thanks to the GURUS (TERRY/BILL) of this board we are getting a very good guidance

Do I see a $3500 asking price painted on the windshield for that heap? There are squirrels nesting in the seats.

Bill, I can swing over to Flemington and pick it up for you, and then drive it down your way, but I'd need a vehicle for the return trip. The topaz xj8 will do.

The windshield in the 2001 Protege was cracked about 6 inches across from the driver's side. My insurance co. would have taken care of it, but why when I traded the car? Also, the very tip of the hood (about two inches up from its end) was scratched pretty bad.

You said $9500-10,000. The dealership where I traded it gave me $11,500 for the car! :)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... I'm sure that they "showed" you $11,500 on paper...

But the reality is, "on the push" -- you might have received $10/$10,500 (real money) ---

No dealer, and especially the dealers in Baltimore would ever put Extra clean book, in a vehicle with damage and high miles.. They can go right down the street, or to the auction and buy a super clean one for a lot less $$$.

I don't mean to hurt your feelings. But, they showed you an over allowance... Sorry.

    Terry/Bill:

I stopped by a Lexus dealership today because their online inventory showed a black '98 LS400. It was sold, but they had a silver '98 with 42k miles priced at $33k, and a 2000 black/black LS400 with 62k miles for $35k. Both prices were after a $2000 "discount" that was marked on the sticker. I didn't want silver, and the 2000 had a few too many paint chips on the front bumper, and about 4 minor dings that they said thety were going to have Dent Wizard fix. How were their prices?

On a separate note, the Lexus CPO warranty seems decent.

    Thanks,
    Quentin

Hi, I am 2 months from the end of my 39 month lease and am trying to find out what my car is worth. My residual is approx $15400. The car is 4 cyl, man trans, white, and has 15k miles (I know ...). The only values I can find are around $14500. A couple of new car dealers told me the same value. Is this correct? Thanks for your help.

...... It sounds nice, it has no miles, it's the right color..Ooops, it's a handshaker.

Ok, let me start over ... it sounds nice, it has no miles ..and the right color with 4 dr's ...ooop's it still has a handshaker..

I think $14,500 is a stretch, but if a dealer will go that far ..then jump on it, obviously it's in great shape.

Ok...let me start over again ... it sounds nice, it has no miles, it's the right color, it's a 4dr.... and it's a handshaker -- with CLOTH...I'm pooped. :)

Take the $14,500 and run like....Rudolph, cause it's worth less ...

    Terry.
  • boilermaker87boilermaker87 Member Posts: 10
Thanks for the info. I had a feeling 14500 was correct. I think I am whats the term ... upside down ... in my lease. This site has been very informative.

Not exactly a trade-in value situation, but what autos are the winners and what are the losers when you trade in?

Of course, my '97 Contour SE was a huge loser at trade-in even tho it was a honey, and anything with Lexus on it's sheetmetal is a sure winner...

But what about, as a rule of thumb, the rest of the players?

2000 with 65,000 Miles? And youd even consider buying it?

    $15,400?

Turn it in, hand them the keys, say "Gee, its been fun but you guys can have this one"

$14,500 is a SERIOUS Stretch. Yeah good color, Im sure its all nice.. NO miles.

    But its a STICK.

If I put a dime over like $13,000 in it.. MAYBE $13,500 I'd need my head examined IMO.

Terry? Whats ACV here you think?

Any idea on a 1995 Toyota Previa LE (AWD and Supercharged). Leather, cd changer, quad seating and privacy glass. Very good condition (not excellent). Miles are 95000. Carmax offered to buy it for $6K cash - good deal or go private?

    Thanks

Bill, or Terry, going to see a '99 Toyota LC, 39K miles Silver/Tan. Private seller, asking $35.5K.

I HATE the high miles, but.....it's a Toyota!

BTW, I'm the guy with the '98 RR who's bugged you for advice a few times. I have an ad in for it--you wouldn't believe the %^*#*%'s who come over wanting to pay even less than wholesale, & are rude, etc. etc. --(then again, I'm sure you would, such is life!)

    Thanks! Happy Holidays.....

No need to get violent. :-) I know the miles were up there, but Toyotas run forever. If the body had been perfect, and the price had been right, I would have considered it. One of my employees only buys late model high mileage used cars because he can get them cheap. He just bought a '98 Montero Sport with over 100k on the clock. Anyway, with miles that high, they've got to be highway. :-) Seriously, if the price had been around $30k, would it have been a good buy, or a stupid one?

Thanks for the advice on the Accord. My husband thinks we should purchase it. I don't know ... Its been a nice car but it just makes me sick when I look at how much money would be spent on it. Part of what is making it harder is that the lease company is offering 5% financing ...

    $6,000?

I say take the $$ and run. Lets see what Terry thinks..

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    See? I remember :)

Hmm.. its gonna do $29K or so across the block, so I think a fair private party price is closer to $32K MAX...

$35,500? Hells no. I betcha you can find a certified one from a dealer for less than that.

Oh, offers below wholesale? Rude people? >:)

I hate jerks, and, being from Jersey, I enjoy being a jerk right back. (This applies to those who are both nasty AND indignant.. "Look, my offer of $25,000 is more than fair, youre an idiot if you dont take it, I KNOW what these are worth")

"Well, that's an amusing offer, but I've taken it to 3 local dealers who all offered well more and really wanted the truck, so thanks, but maybe you guys need to find one that's a couple years older or has some frame damage or something"

    Something like that! :)

Just wanting to keep you in line.

Yeah its a great buy until you realize how tough it is to sell a 3 or 4 yr old Lexus with 100K on it unless you give it away or find the village idiot with a wad of cash...

$35K is around wholesale for a 25-35K or so one (ROughish guesstimate off the top of my head but Im sure Im close here)

So what dd they hit this thing at? $27K? $28K?

At $30K it is a deal. But even so.. unless you drive very little and keep it a while..

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well.. depends I guess.

If you want the car, $15,400 isnt a bad retail price at all really. Figure I have $13,500 in it. Then it runs through the shop ($200), I have it detailed.. ($100)..etc.. I'm gonna want to see $16K out of it.

And, if you REALLY like it.. I mean, you DO know its history, and a 14K miler stick isnt an easy car to find (Granted, 90% of the people out there DONT want them, but those who do have a tough time finding them).

Still, you need to be on the phone with your leasing company.. see if they'll nego the buyout. Remember, the less info you give em the better.. but offer em $13K. Just ask to speak with a manager. Mention that its' a 5-speed too :)))

    What is a reasonable trade-in value on a 2001 Mercedes Benz SLK 320 (V6)?

    6sp manual
    dark red
    black & tan interior
    12,000 miles
    1 owner
    perfect shape

How much could I get for it if I sold it instead?
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
I appreciate you keeping me in line. I plan to keep whatever I get for a while, and it won't be driven in bad weather, so figure about 10k miles/year.... You make a good point though, if something came up, and I had to sell it, it would be difficult.

    Thanks,

    Bill,
    Quick questions:
Do you think that Kelley BB etc is adjusting their values towards wholesale/auction #'?
Has it been just recently that the auctions are much lower or higher #'s than kbb?, or is it more noticable with cyberspace?
    Thanks

I see the ad on cars.com (Boston Globe)...I recall there is just way too much money in the NY,NY, CT, MA area...and you'll never get a good price. I see Brentwoodvolvo giving some good advice to get a certified one from the dealer...I would echo that advice. I jut got a certified pre-owned SUV myself from a delaer for about or less than what the private sellers wnated. Dealer certification is the wya to go, my last car was pre-cert as well. Keep calling around, things are not as uniform as I recall they were when i bought lmy last car in 1998. I have found that given the economy, etc. some delaers are just bleeding from their eyesockets in invesntory/price reductions, particularly with leftover '01s. Hop on the web and shop out of state...delivery is like 500-1000 max (&negotiable) allthe way out to CO, or you can rent one way for like 80-90 from Hertz...I investigated both
  • dtownfbdtownfb Member Posts: 2,918
In my experience (not like I have a lot) KBB is definitely on the high side. For proof, go to ther web site and put in a 2000 Accord. The trade-in value they show you is only $1000 or so under invoice of a new Accord. You will never get that form a dealer or be able to sell it for that amount. I've found Edmunds calculation to be fairly accurate.

Augustus: As far as SUVs, I would definitely go with a pre-certified car. Too many thing can go wrong with the 4x4 system. But for most cars, if you have a good mechanic, have him/her check it out thoroughly and you should be fine.
  • dtownfbdtownfb Member Posts: 2,918
YOu may want ot check around the web for prices on other used Previas. Considering it is 6 year old (going on 7 quickly) and has 95k miles, you won't get much for it. Plus it no longer exists in the Toyota lineup which will hurt the re-sale value. I would check out EDmunds and MSN. MSN allows you to search their website for a particular vehicle. And their database is nationwide.

My guess (and it is only a guess) is you can probablay sell it for $7000-$7500.

I'm sure it's going to get nothing but I have a friend and she wants to get a new(er) car.... 91 Toyota Corolla with 170K miles. It seems like DX. (basic model?) has problem of the engine temp guage not working but other than that no other mechnical problem. I would say it's in fair condition for 10 year old car.
    Thanks.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I got $11,500 for the Protege. I think that's poor resale on a car that's only 8 months old. I "followed" all the paperwork, and it came out that I did get $11,500 for the car. Believe me, I was upside down a little so I know.
  • dtownfbdtownfb Member Posts: 2,918
How much did you pay for the vehicle? I guarantee that the dealer will have it on the used car market for $14000 next week.

You can't expect to get close to wha tyou paid for the vehicle. The vehicle has been used for 8 months. Why would a new car dealer want your used car? He's has plenty o perfectly good new cars he is trying ot sell. he doesn't need or want your used car.

If you want top dollar for your car, you have to sell it privately and deal with the headaches.
