That's funny, because when you first posted your quiz, the "boyhood dream" and "cheesegrater" hints made me think of the Testarossa immediately. I almost responded with that answer until I re-read and noticed that the Testarossa was the "friend"; I had to switch gears a bit to get to the Lamborghini.

The "biggest" and "map" hints made me think of the Yukon XL / Suburban, but the rest of the hints do not align - especially the "competition smokes us" one. There really isn't any competition in that segment after Ford dropped the Excursion.
I cannot put my finger on the answer, though.

Well, I wasn't thinking about the Avanti but it qualifies. They continued to build these cars for some perverse reason until the 90's I think and the later ones did have Chevy engines.
I was specifically thinking of the 1966 full size Studebakers.
Swan song for a struggling independant who couldn't compete any longer.
I am not so well known but I did cost a ton I was available before the Hummer H1 My brother was a hot supercar that was fast In desert heat, my tires could last Only a few hundred of me were made In the 90s to rest I was laid
edit: D'oh!!!! this is what i get for trying to play at work. Had it up on screen and by the time I had the chance to hit Post, its been long dead and gone.

On July 18, 2004, at a US military base near Baqubah, members of the American military used an LM002 that had belonged to Uday Hussein to simulate the effects of a car bomb, not knowing of its rarity or value. The LM002 was destroyed during the test.
I had a 4 zone draft free climate system My price tag was nearly 100 grand listed Stateside I failed to meet sales numbers And in my family I am the largest I sat in the showroom beside compact cars Which was a crock as I'm better by far
I sold in large numbers and helped my firm Bring in the money it needed to earn My new radical style, and awesome design Ruled the 90s that was my time! What's funny though is that my replacement Took my design and totally reversed it!
I was a very successful experiment. I made snobs harrumph and ponies startle. My choices of materials made me strong and light. I am a legend, though my engine won't fit in one.
You learn something every day! I never heard the term "Oriental Teahouse" in relation to the 1959 Chevy, and I was around when they were new. Maybe that was a West Coast expression that never made it to Pittsburgh.
My aunt bought a Bel Air sedan. Those batwings and cat's eye taillights were really wild.
I guess the "Teahouse" is especially relevant to the flat-roofed 4-door hardtop.
In 3 movies I starred, back then I was new I drove, rode on rails, and even flew The actor who drove me was young back then The guy that designed me used to work for GM
OK, to close this one out, I bow to Shifty's expertise, and give Lemko 1/2 credit. The first American car with a claimed rating that achieved 1 horsepower/cubic inch was the 1956 Chrysler 300B with the optional setup (dual quads I think), which claimed 355 hp from its 354 cube engine.

Here's another hint. It is an SUV but not a GM.

Chrysler Aspen.
They did make a Hybrid version of it but not very many.
It's the biggest Chrysler sold yet.
Very few sold.
The cousin is the Durango.
The competition I'm talking about was the Yukon and Escalade.
The Hybrid version came out for about a half a year, and then discontinued. I saw one on the road.
I swear there must have been only a handful of them sold, maybe less than 100.

I know someone would bite on that one. Nope, a little older than the Chevy.

They came out in 1963. The Rivieras and T-Birds were competion they couldn't match.

Did the W12 models really crack 100,000?
Or maybe they did in CAD but not USD?
Don't know if they did crack 100k, but the top models with all options were in the $90s, in the US. In Canada they were over $100k.
