    Hello Folks,

The Honda Accord LX that i just bought carries a
special break-in oil according to the dealer
service department. They recommend it be changed at 3750 miles, but some books on car maintainance
suggest it be changed after the break-in period
    which is 600 miles.

Should i change it now or wait. Any insight on this is greatly appreciated.

Not some outdated advise in "some books"!

    http://www.honda2001.com/owners/service_parts/faqs_fluids.html

This is what Honda say's about alot of new car owners FAQ. 3750 for those who like to over due it a bit, which never hurt anyone that can afford it and 7500 for the rest.

I recently placed an order for oil filter (part # is 15400-POH-305). The part that they sent me is 15400-PT7-005 made in Canada. They explained to me that they are made by 2 different manufacturers but basically are the same. Does anyone know the difference between the two?

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi guys,

Just bought a 01 exv6 coupe on sat(500 mi already!). Dealer break-in period is approx 600 mi from what I understand. Any advantages to being cautious longer? Also has anyone used any mid-grade/premium fuel on this car? does it make any difference? Any input would be appreciated.

Also what do you guys out there recommend as far as rustproofing/paint protection. i didnt do anything @the dealer, but want to take care to fit before snow hits. Thanks guys,

    Viper:

I plan to hold it below 4500 rpm up to about 1000 miles; after that, have at it.

This car requires regular unleaded only; anything else is a complete waste of money, PERIOD. Do what you want, but with fuel prices where they are these days, this is an insane idea.

Wax it regularly with whatever makes you happy; I use the top-rated wax from Consumer Rpts' last test, Zymol, but everyone has their own ideas of what's best. Every three months or so will take care of it forever; go to the high pressure wand wash and hit the underside every couple of months. Again, anything else is a waste of money.

Please put fuel recommended by the manual. This has to do with the compression ratio of the engine

Premium fuel is NOT better than regular. It it required to withstand higher pressure/temparature of high compression ration engines......

    So use what manual says......

Hi, I have a 99 LX 5-speed tranny that seems kind of "notchy" or hard to engage, especially when shifting from first to second. It is also hard to shift into first, even at a crawl. I owned at least 10 manual trannys since the 60's, but I changed and only owned an auto tranny since 1990 until this Honda. I don't really think it is my technique, but it is kind of a struggle to drive it in heavy traffic because of this. I took it to the dealer and the service manger drove it. He stated "it wouldn't bother me", but frankly I don't think he knows what he is talking about. Anybody else have a perspective on this transmission. Thanks
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
    Suggested tactics:

The easiest is to find another dealer, and another service advisor who will take the problem seriously.

Ask the service guy to drive your car and then another from the used car inventory. How do they compare? Maybe it IS you, but it could just as easily be a rare problem with the synchros.

Try a simple drain and refill of the trans fluid, if you can't get anyone to agree to the first two ideas.

Clutch could need adjusting - may not be completely disengaging.

Neither transmission nor clutch problems are common with Honda, but that doesn't mean they don't occasionally happen. You yourself could also try one or more cars off the used car lot to see how they compare to yours, and proceed from there.

i have a '00 Accord LX 5-speed sedan. bought 10 months ago. i would have to agree with you re: shift "notchiness." i've owned other manual trans. cars over the years, and this car is the least pleasurable to shift. not saying my shifting technique is perfect by any means, but i still occasionally have a bit of trouble getting the shifter to do its job smoothly. it's been this way since new. at the time of purchase, i had test-driven a Passat, and even though there was no way i would have bought it (my concern over lingering VW quality issues-- borne out by Consumer Reports), the Passat shifted like BUTTAH!

I wonder if Honda has changed some components in their manual trannies in the last couple of years. I've had a couple of Hondas with manuals before and have always found them very easy to shift. But when I bought a 2000 Prelude SH, I actually found the trannie kind of disappointing. It was notchy, and there was often a slight grind going from 1st to 2nd. Maybe Honda has had to beef up their manuals to handle the higher power and torque that their engines are now putting out.
  • hbund216hbund216 Member Posts: 162
I would have to agree with the notchy 5 speed. I have a 2000 Accord EX and it is not the best 5 speed I've driven. gkirtley, mine makes a loud snapping noise going from 1st to 2nd. hmmm. But I have not had problems shifting into 1st from a crawl. Hate to say it but I prefer the shifter feel on my 89 Excel.

I just took delivery of my new EX-L V-6. I was coming off a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. A great car but I wanted a change from the SUV experience. I decided with my new vehicle that I wanted something that wasn't such an effort to drive.

The Jeep also became a real gas guzzler and I hated paying thirty bucks to fill up every time. It might be my imagination but I see a lot of SUV's with "For Sale" on the window here in surburban heaven.

I think you can't beat Honda for value and reliability. I don't know anyone who brought a Hoda who wasn't satified. I hope I'm not disappointed. The Jeep was in the shop a lot. I know two other people who had the same problems I did with electrical systems and brakes.

I was very impressed with the value I received for my money. I paid $23,300. Pretty good I think for what seems such a fine automobile.

Many thanks for the people who contribute to this board. I knew what I was getting into from reading the posts and was able to make an informed decision.

    Keep you guys posted !

Thanks for the feedback on the 5-speed. I am convinced that either the clutch is dragging, the shift linkage is poorly adjusted, or it simply is a poorly designed transmission. I am going to try another dealer as per the suggestion. After that I will change the tranny oil myself and put a moly additive in it. I had good luck with that on a Ford diesel pickup. Thanks, George K.

I just bought a 94 EX which I like a lot except for the stereo. I know this is an old and complicated topic, but I have a simple question: how can I find out the specs. on the existing (factory) system? I can't even figure out the maker, much less get a sense for whether I would benefit from more power etc.

Also interesting, of course, would be any success stories or advice about upgrading, from speakers to head unit.

Sorry to bore all you newer Honda owners, who I'm sure are having a wonderful time.
  • hbund216hbund216 Member Posts: 162
will27, I know honda uses alpine as OEM on their head unit. They have for a few years now I have not upgraded my current head unit but I took it to a custom installer and they said to throw out the stock speakers first, add amp second, then the head unit if I wanted.
  • snowmansnowman Member Posts: 540
Notchy shifting is also related to engine rev. If you shift on time, it is very smooth. If you rev the engine then it is notchy. Try to shift at 2500 rpm unless you need extra power. You might feel the difference. Small gears are always this way for high rpms. This is my personal feel but Accords have very strong third gear. I try to speed up this gear unless I need quick extra power.

Does anyone know how much gas is left in the gas tank when the light comes on in the '00 4-cyl. Accord? It appears to be four gallons, but I wasn't sure, since that seems like a lot.
  • jmincherjmincher Member Posts: 65
I have almost 3,000 miles on my 2001 Honda EX-V6. So far I have been more than pleased. Took it on vacation last week and I got 27MPG twice and 24MPG once. Not too bad considering I was driving 70-80 MPH. The seats were as comfortable as a 9 hour road trip would allow. However I would like to see the cup holders in a better place and receive the larger drinks. The orange gas light came on with about 4 gallons of gas left in the tank.
  • steve05401steve05401 Member Posts: 50
i've noticed the light coming on with about 3-1/2 to 4 gallons left. i've pushed it to below "E", then refueled, and STILL had at least 2 gallons left.
  • steve05401steve05401 Member Posts: 50
my custom installer said he believed that it wasn't possible to add an amp to the OEM head unit in my '00 LX sedan. anyone out there know for sure, please?

While used car shopping, I came across a 1994 Accord EX with low milage (90000 km). Everything looked good until I opened the drivers door. On the floor very close to the drivers seat was a bolt sticking out of the floor that was rusted. (the car mats were in the trunk).

Is this a cause for concern? Everything else looked good. i.e no rust anyplace else.

Also...the engine wasnt as clean as I expected it to be. Some of the aluminum pieces were pitted, slightly corroded and really worn. I've seen 93 and 94 accords with slightly more km's and their engines were merticulous. You could practically eat off them!!

I'm from Toronto, so I need a car that can live through pretty severe snowfalls etc. I need a realiable car! I already have a 86 Accord with high mileage that I am extremely proud off!

I would appreciate any feedback on this problem!

The "bolt" that you are referring to I think is the floor pin that is meant to hold the floor mat in place. There should be a hole in the driver side mat that the bolt is supposed to go into to prevent the mat from sliding forward.

If it is just that bolt that is rusted, then no need to worry since it is quite likely that it gets kicked around and gets wet. But if you have lingering doubts, maybe see if you can peel back the carpet to check the condition of the floorboard.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
Be wary of used cars with meticulously clean engines 'cause it means they've been shampooed. Question is: why? Did they want to clean off something they didn't want buyers to see?

    Hello,

Does anyone know whether Honda Accord LX 2000 has a filter for automatic transmission oil or not?

And are the lubricants for bearing, hinges, etc permanent which means no lube job is needed? The reason i asked is i dont see this info in the user's manual at all?

    Thanks a bundle.

I was going to buy a 96 honda accord from this guy
who says he buys cars from auctions and fix them
up to sell. It was a pretty good price $5800 so I
went to his garage to sign the papers. First
    thing
he said when I got there was how are you going to
pay me? Then I asked him if the car has been in
any accidents, if there were any problems with the
transmission, etc. And of course he said he
    doesn't
sell anything that's bad. Then he told me that I
would only get a bill of sale for the car( no
    title
or anything yet). He said I could take the car
home but I would have to bring it back so he could
take it to a DPS in another town to get checked
    out
to see if there were any stolen parts, etc because
he bought it from an auction and that's what is
required. I asked him for the VIN so I could
    check
out the car myself, but he said no because he
thought I would do something deceptive with it.
Are you suppose to be able to get the VIN from the
seller to check out the car if they have nothing
    to
hide. I keep reading that that's what you do
first before you buy the car. Do dealers usually
give you the VIN or are the usually resistant to
    do
that? And how does buying a car from an auction
usually work? Last, does anyone have a web
    address
where I can look up the VIN? I found it before
but didn't copy down the address. If anyone has
any info about any of this I would be so grateful.

Thank you in advance. And if you can't tell this
is my first time buying a used car. Hehe. You've
    probably already guessed that.
  • dnguyen65dnguyen65 Member Posts: 26
The deal is too good to be true. Probably this is a salvaged car (the DMV title will say that for u.) So do request to see all the required papers.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
The ATF filter is internal and doesn't ever get changed until trans needs rebuilt. The use of Honda ATF is recomended for long life and best shift quality. All that is needed is a drain and refill at every 30k.
The hinges and latches can be lubed with spray on white lube. The bearings and ball joints are all sealed and have no service points.

You can get the VIN off any car parked on the street. It's not secretive like a
Social Security Number. Don't trust the documents he gets for you. Get them yourself. I know someone who bought cars from auctions. He said the ones that look drivable could have been involved in a flood and dried out or stripped and put back together. You would not notice any problems until after a few months of driving. I would not risk it.

I'd appreciate greatly if some of you can tell me what is the model number for the Alpine CD changer that I can install on my 1998 Accord LX. Is it a dash or in trunk model ?

What kind of adapter that I need ? Is the Alpine after market model is different than the factory installed one ?
  • lezaleza Member Posts: 2
Thanks Dnguyen65, Milindc, and Hbund216 for your helpful information and for not criticizing me on my lack of knowledge. That's why I came here to learn. I passed on the deal that same day because of the fact that he was being so slimy, but I wanted to know what was behind his deceptive behavior so that I will be armed with info for the next time. I learn something new every time I try to buy a car. Thank you all again for taking the time to help me learn.
  • marsha7marsha7 Member Posts: 3,703
You will continue to learn until you are about 95 years old, and then you will know EVERYTHING about buying a car. Sadly, by then the joints will creak, the eyes will fade, hearing is shot, and you won't need a car anymore :):):):)

But, you will finally know it all!!!

Don't just rely on a VIN number check either.

Especially, if you are buying from a private party, insist on having a dealer or a good independant shop check the car out completely.

Take it to a body shop if you think there might be a problem.

And...BEWARE of a car that is priced below market value...there is usually a reason!

My Accord 2000 (silver color) has a minor scratch on the rear bumper (barely noticeable) Any advice on how to mask it.
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
First, try polishing it out with any good liquid polish/wax. If that doesn't satisfy you, then it's time to use the touch-up paint [dealers carry it in the parts dept], or ask a good detailer to take an air-brush to it...the latter will look the best, but cost you some modest fee [less than $50, probably].
  • kieltkielt Member Posts: 3
Have a bid from a dealer of $19,215 for an '01 Accord Lx with auto transmission, ABS, and side airbags. That's $226 over invoice. MSRP as specified is $21,280. Anyone do better? There are no rebates or delaer incentives listed on Edmunds or cars.com.
  • jgris1jgris1 Member Posts: 1
Lute Riley Honda in Dallas sells the 2001 Honda Accord EX-V6 for $22,874 (no haggle internet price).

For 2000 model, dealer invoice was $21,836. I haven't been able to find 2001 dealer invoice, but 2001 MSRP is only $550 more than 2000 MSRP, and the only difference between the 2 is the in-dash CD changer & passenger power seats (which should equate to about $450 dealer invoice). If you take last year dealer invoice ($21,836) + $450 for power seats, 2001 dealer invoice should be around $22,286. Subtract the Lute Riley price ($22,874) and they are selling it for $588 over the 2001 theoretical invoice.

And that's no haggle! Good luck!

I have been searching through some of the threads for information on the fluids/filters recommendations. I am in the process of finalizing a deal for a 2001 Accord. What is the recommendation for the first oil change as far as mileage. And also, does Honda truly recommend almost all of the different fluids in the Accord be Genuine Honda? I went to www.honda2001.com after seeing it in a thread. I remember seeing Honda coolant on this thread or the maintenance thread at $16.00 a gallon. WOW. Sounds pretty extreme to me.

Does anyone know of reputable websites that sell Genuine Honda Accessories for good prices, ie Alloy rims, spoilers?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  • carguy62carguy62 Member Posts: 545
There are many sites that sell OEM Honda accessories. Some I know of are www.hparts.com, www.partscheap.com, www.honda-accessories.com and www.hondapartsforyou.com . I have purchased items from hondapartsforyou, they have free shipping.

I'd like to hear if you attempt to install a spoiler. I have the instructions (also available on some of those sites) and decided it is not something I would attempt (though I'm sure many have with success).
  • castagerecastagere Member Posts: 15
Actually, I listed the spoiler just for illustration purposes. More than likely, I wouldn't want to put that on myself. Although I have another question after looking at the hondapartsforyou site and hondaaccessories site. Is it me or does Honda not offer optional alloy rims for the V6 sedan other than those god-awful multi-spoke rims. On the H-A site it says only for 4 cylinder for the 5 spoke and then V6 coupe for the "more than 5 spoke" rims. On the parts for you it doesn't even give you that info. Am I missing something? Is the information on the H-A site correct. I remember the dealer saying that the mag types were only for the 4 cylinder models. I find it hard to believe that they don't offer mag wheels for the V6 sedans.

I am planning to replace the speakers in my 94 Accord EX sedan and wondered if people have recommendations. I had planned to put in Nakamichi full range speakers, in the doors and in the back. But then I noticed that there seem to be little tiny speakers on the dashboard as well, presumably tweeters. Does this mean that I should be looking at a component system? And if so, what sort?

    Many thanks.
  • stevepakestevepake Member Posts: 21
I'm planning on purchasing a 2001 Accord EX (MT, or V6/AT). I test drove two today at a local dealership and really wasn't that impressed with their performance. Both were factory fresh and had less than 20 miles on them.

Do these things loosen up and get significantly quicker as you break them in?
  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
Accord V6 does 0-60 in 7.7-7.8 seconds. So if it is not sufficient for you, you will need to move up to TL which does it in 7 seconds.

Accord shows significant change when VTEC comes in picture, when you need to pass on the highways.
I don't think you can get better performance than Accord in this price segment
  • frag235frag235 Member Posts: 81
According to info I've read here at Edmunds and elsewhere (Honda website) Is the 01 Accord really that much quieter then the 00's? (as far as road/engine/wind noise) Thank you for all your advice/help on this forum!
  • stevepakestevepake Member Posts: 21
yeah, i know the Accord V6 is fast. I think what I was feeling was the Accord V6's exceptionally smooth SOHC power curve. It's not peaky like a DOHC engine would tend to be, just smooth and all around powerful.

I drove a VTEC I4/MT as well and it felt about the same way. I know that one is faster than my current car too - it just doesn't feel like it is becasue of the smoother power curve, although I definitely saw the speedo rotating to the right much faster than it would in my current car.

Come to think of it - smoother is better. My fiance gets motion sickness quite easily, and having a nice and smooth power curve would be great for her ;-D

I think I need to test drive some more...

  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Yeah, you can definately tell the difference.

I think Honda got tired of losing a sale to Camry once in awhile over the noise issue and took the necessary steps to make the Accord quieter.

It is now quieter than the Camry.

Actually, the differences were (and still are) miniscule but Toyota kept making a big deal out of it.

Personally, I think our 98 Accord is quiet enough.
