No i dont live in the Spaulding lakes area...but they do have some really nice homes there! Anyway, I have owned the following: 1992 Mitsubishi Diamante, 1997 Infiniti I30t, 2000 Acura 3.2 TL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL-S. All great cars...Diamante was the best car I've owned/driven (I think I was lucky to have a car with low defects...must have been a "Monday" or "Tuesday" car). Interior/exterior styling was great, and it was DAMN QUIET. The TL and CL are getting VERY close to the "best car I've owned/driven" status (ready to surpass teh Diamante on my list) Only reason i dont like the Infiniti is because of the customer service attached to it. The car would be awesome if the service was decent here. It has awesome power, etc. However, it is a lot like the 2000 model (I can now "review" the 2000 since I have the 2000 I30 in my driveway right now as a loaner, same mileage as my TL). The steering wheel, interior look, and the way the engine sounds is all VERY similar to my 97. Overall, in my opinion, the lack of better sound dampening in the I30 gives it that overall feel of cheapness when compared to the TL. I parked them side by side in my driveway this evening, '00 TL and '00 I30, and they look very similar. I was even lead to believe that both Acura and Infiniti had bought the door handles and the assembly around it from the same supplier! They look almst EXACTLY the same! Anyway, the 2000 I30 drives good, but very noisy compared to the TL. The TL feels more SOLID, the steering wheel is thicker and more stiff when turning (better handling)...the I30 has a loose wheel. The I30 accelerates VERY well, and if Infiniti could rid the extra noises inside the cabin, the I30 engine would be much quieter than the TL engine. TL engine sounds "tingly" and not as solid as the I30. However, the TL feels more responsive, and the steering wheel has no vibrations (while driving or at idle), and feels like you're driving a V8 (power, torque, pickup, etc). Also, in my opinion, the TL has better interior design. Standard rims on TL look better (yet nothing compared to the touring rims on the I30!), yet overall styling of both is very similar (conservative, yet elegant...people KNOW you're driving a luxury car). If I was in the market for a 2000 or 2001, I would definately go for the TL...customer service makes me happier, and the overall feel of the car is MUCH better. TL drives like a higher class premium luxury car, whereas the I30 feels like a lower class entry-luxury car (Thats what it is anyway...and the TL surpasses that "entry" feel). Oh, forgot to mention that the seats in the TL are fabulous...they feel luxurious, whereas the I30 seats seem very "plain." I am not going to compare price, since many can argue about the base MSRPs, and what you would actually be quoted at your dealers. I would presume they are very close anyway, even though both have very different numbers in the window [sticker]. But these are merely my opinions based on my experiences...

Hope my i30t is flawless like yours. Looking at the maintennace schedule, it looks like you don't have to do much to this car. I hope to flush the trans and the coolant once a year along with rotating the tires.

BTW, I ordered addtional wood trim from http://www.exoticwooddash.com. It should be in today and I plan on doing it this weekend. I saw an i30 in the showroom with the additonal wood trim and the car looks luxurious even though it's fake wood.

I absolutely love this car even though my wife won't let me drive it. She's waiting to put 1k miles so that she can take it past 55 mph. The car is beautiful. The only thing that this car is missing is rear A/C vents which the ES300 has.

Also, I want to ask you another question on the HIDs. The manual says that you shouldn't turn them on/off quickly. In my camry, I'm used to turning the light switch twice (one for park lights, one for headlights) to turn them on at night. In this car, the first turn gets you into Auto, which will turn on the HIDs b/c it's night. The next turn will off the HIDs b/c it only turns on the park lights. The third will turn the HIDs back on. (What they should've done is put the auto switch on the otherside of the "off" marking, so that it's "Auto, off, park lights, head lights").

Ayyway, I'm trying to avoid turning the HIDs on and off consequetively. Are you battling this problem too?

The HIDs going on and off really dont seem like a big problem...especially since the bulb will never blow out (as opposed to turning on and off halogens which, as they say, shorten the life of the bulb). I noticed the Auto configuration on the stick which controls the lights...it would concern me also. Maybe your best bet is to just switch it to Auto anyway, since the light sensor will constantly be deprived of light (at night) and you need the lights on anyway. Better get used to using the Auto feature then??

btw, Maneesh must be an Indian name, are you Indian?

so youre saying you have four cars right now? and i would take all four of them. i especially like the TL also. when my dad was shopping for his new car, it closely resembled the way his Aurora drove, which was great. it even had better pickup than the aurora, with only a V6. he picked the I30 though because it was cheaper to lease it than the TL. Id like to have your job, with the four cars you have!! i too, like the Camry, they run beautifully quiet, and i get to drive them where i work, because we rent them! but dont they have a V6?

You seem to like your Aurora a lot...was it a car you liked in particular through ownership? They're great cars, but took a downfall after the first few years of its debut. We paid MSRP for the TL and CL, but that was expected from Acura for new models. We bought both at the same time thinking we would get some kind of discount, but that didnt work with them. They knew that if we left, the next person walking in the door would be buying the car anyway. Ray Laks is an okay dealership. We bought the Camry from the new Northtown dealer, they seem to be okay also (even though the manager there was not willing to move 25 dollars and said I could leave if I didnt move up 25 dollars on a 20K dollar car!!). Anyhow, the dealership is very nice. We are just unfortunate to have Autoplace Infiniti as the ONLY dealer in our area...it "seems" to me that their operation with regards to the service dept. is Fraudulent. I may be having a problem which is not life threatening, however, the dealer should at least "try" to fix my car. By the way, I picked it up today, and they didnt fix the squeek I had coming from my right front wheel. Even though the company rep. TOLD the service manager to fix it, seems like the service manager forgot? The reason i got a loaner from them was to have those noises fixed/addressed. Nobody looked at it after the Company guy left after looking at my car. I have decided to stop bringing my car to their service dept. they are a bunch of incompetent idiots. I am kind of weary about taking my Infiniti to some third party place for oil changes, tire rotatoins, etc. Does anybody else here skip out on the dealer in favor of cheaper [and possibly better] third party regular maintenance places? Also, does anybody take their vehicle to third party mechanics as opposed to the dealer? I am taking my car to a third party mechanic soon to have them review my car. Thanks...

I've had my 2001 I30L for 3 weeks now and simply love it. One minor thing that I just discovered today is the front seat belts. When you click out of your seat belt and it goes flying back into its little side holder, it often slams into the side moldings and scuffs it up. The top cloth part gets hit, and the bottom plastic part even more so. I have little scratches and scuffs all along the side there and they don't come out. The passenger side, which isn't as used as much, has a few scuffs in it, too. I guess I have to slowly let the belt back in its place, but you often forget to do this.

I traded my dreaded 94 Intrepid for the I30, but there's a few things I miss with the Dodge that I wish were in the I30: Rear air vents; an engine light; dual sun visors, so you block sun on sides and front at the same time; and a gas cap that attaches and hangs there as you pump, so you don't lose it. All these can probably be added aftermarket(except A/C). All Infiniti would have to do is spend a few more bucks to have these and it would be the ultimate car.

On the headllight switch, I really don't notice the configeration of it,... my wife has given me orders to leave it on Auto, it's her car. So that settles that at my house.

This car would've been even more formidable with the ear a/c vents - even if they increased the MSRP by $300. I still would've bought the car. This feature would definitely set the I30 apart from Maxima. I don't know why they didn't do it though. The ES300 has it but I don't think the TL does.

I've also noticed the seat belt hitting the side moldings. I have to remember to hold on to it while letting it go.

I agree with you about the car. While I love my I30 I too cant believe it does not have a light in the engine compartment. Does Infiniti offer one after market?. Its funny, I just noticed the lack of the light this morning while washing the car.

you should try a different Nissan dealership, like Mike Barney or something... supposedly their good there, if they can fix an Infiniti, i dont know.

in regards to the Aurora, i didnt personally have one, my dad had two. between the two of them, we had one for a total of five years. so i grew quite attached to it. it had awesome acceleration and good handling and ride. our second one is where we become accustomed to heated seats. so yeah, i loved it, it was a lot of fun to drive when my dad let me use it and it looked great too. especially when he had the black one....

Or was it their body shop? friend got a car fixed there recently, and they did a pretty poor job of fixing it. do you know if Lockport Nissan is owned by the same people as Autoplace Infiniti (Dan Fabrizio)? i was thinking more about taking it to a local mechanic...are you familiar with "Amherst Collision" on Main street in Williamsville? Do you know about their reputation by any chance? I was referred there by another Infiniti owner-friend. So what the heck, i'll take a chance...

i heard about Amherst collision from a guy who rented a car from where i work. he got his car painted there and the did a good job. he used to be a mechanic with firestone, so i think his word would be good. I dont know about lockport nissan.... theres also Southtowns Nissan i believe....

There is a tray and a storage unit underneath the adjustable center console in the I30. For some reason, I can't figure out how to open the tray. The funny thing is I was able to open it before and so was the dealer. I went through the manual but I still can't figure it out.

Any ideas? I'm wondering if it's stuck or something.

Ihad the same problem when I bought my I30. Just pull up on the arm rest. The tray is beneath the arm rest held there by a snap fastener.

Amherst Collision is located on Main Street in Williamsville...I'm not EXACTLY sure where it is, but if you know where Youngs Road intersects Main (near the ECC campus), its West of that intersection, going towards the I-290 ramps. If you are heading West, the place is on your right-hand side. I think its a bluish-gray, or maybe greenish building...not too sure though, but it is clearly marked, and it is very close to the curb of the street. We should both mention to the head honcho over there that we talked about his business on this board...maybe we could be in for a discount!? Thanks for the info on Southtowns...I may consider taking it to either Lockport, M. Barney, or Southtowns, but I will definately take it to Amherst Col. first. I will update also (I am calling them tomorrow)...

Has anyone tried the heated seats if equipped on
their cars. I tried them on my car with the
outside temperature around 60 F, and the seats only got slightly warm at best with the switch on high. I would have expected the seats to be much hotter. I use to drive a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee and those seats would get really hot if you had the switch on high.

The heated seats in my '97 seem to work fine. I used to keep them on high, however, after getting my TL and reading the manual for that car, I had learned that the "HI" setting is only meant to quickly warm the seat up, at which point you should switch to the "LO" setting in order not to burn out the unit prematurely. My seats do not become obscenely hot, however, they become comfortably warm (although, in the winter time, they tend to feel obscenely hot since I have the heater running also). On the days its around 50-60 here, I merely run the seat heaters, and I do not run the heater in my car. This is comfortable for me since the seat is nice and warm, yet the air inside is cool and comfortable. Just my opinion!

I stopped the vehicle, started normally through the gears, but no overdrive and the transmission would not stay engaged to slow the car as usual. Stopped again and set for a minute, took off and every thing appeared to be back to normal. Very scary to be in the middle of nowhere and have that happen. It has shaken our confidence in Infiniti.

Has anyone heard of such a problem before?

I have never heard of that happening to the transmission. I would think that the computer would have registered a trouble code, so I would suggest taking it to the Infiniti Dealer. Please let us all know what you find out for our own education. What year and how many miles do you have? (I have the 2000 I30 and have taken two long trips at 80 MPH for 6-7 hours without stopping and have had no problems)

HEATED SEATS:

The seats on my I30 do not get that warm even on high, so I guess it's normal.(I was kind of surprised too at the lack of heat.)

Has anyone had any experience with interior rattles/noises in their 2000 I30? I have a noise coming from the console. It may be the cupholder door. Any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.
mhammy - My drivers window makes a loud 'squeak' when I lower it as well. Have you found a solution to that problem?

The car is at the dealer now for the transmission problem. They are replacing a valve (don't know which one yet) in the transmission. The car had approximately 7,000 miles on it at the time of the incident (on a trip a couple of weeks ago), and 12,000 now. I really like the acceleration and power on hills that this vehicle is capable of and hope that they can solve the problem.

I did notify them this afternoon about the TCM notice. The 'service consultant' knew nothing about it and is supposed to check on it.

To clarify...i didnt really have a "squeak" when lowering the window...it was more of a "scraping" noise...it sounded like it needed immediate attention. However, I did not pursue this problem for two reasons:
1.) It went away as abruptly as it had started...all in one day, all very sudden. It sounded so bad that I thought I would need a whole new window assembly or something. However, it disappeared without any attention, and has not really returned.
2.) My service dept. is IDIOTIC. they are basically worthless, unless you feel like bringing your car in for a rip-off oil change at 31 dollars. Oh, by the way, as they have done for me in the past, they also cover 90-200+ dollar interval services, in which they promise to rotate the tires (and when you check after picking up the car, I find they havent even TOUCHED the tires). That reminds me, when I discovered they never changed the tires, I told the IDIOT service manager he didnt rotate them like he was supposed to, and he said he would have to charge me again to have them rotate them! Seems like these idiots dont really "touch" anything...their service dept. is basically a "high-priced parking garage" for the day.

my father had a 97 aurora with heated seats, and when they got up to max, they were hot. uncomfortable even, where you would have to switch to low. in the I30 however, we can leave it on high, and we dont even think its on, but when we turn it off, we can tell its off. so i would just say that infiniti did a good job in setting the temperature maximum in this car.

Question: Has anyone experienced problems waiting an hour and 20 minutes.... for Krispy Kreme Donuts? geez, a new one opened up here where i am(first one in town) and at 12:30, when i finally got my donuts, there was still a long line of cars.... waiting for donuts! no cops in line though.....

I bought 2000 I30 in early July from Midway Infiniti in Phoenix...good buying experience.

Two days later I got the feeling that the car is hanging between first and second gear...Did some research...found TCM..and took the TCM to service advisor at Midway (Shaun)...They recognized the problem...ordered new part and replaced the TCM.
If you need a copy of TCM email me at enterpriseq@aol.com and I will email you a bitmap file. Its TSB 00-039 originally issued for Maxima 2000

Besides TCM other minor problems that I had the fixed (They should not be present in this class car) were:

Squeaky wipers...Whole assembly was changed
Head light Alignment
Occasional rattle in passenger door...not yet completely eliminated
Wind shield washer nozzle were aimed too low and were realigned...

Over all pretty happy with Midway Service and the Car....

george2kmax, how did you get a copy of that technical service bulletin? does Nissan mail it to your home? Does it work like a recall notice in which certain ranges of VIN's are affected, and only those owners receive the TSB notice? I found a TSB for my problem on the National Highway Traffic Saftey Association website, but my dealer ignored it (it wasnt on official papaer or anything, it was part of a huge listing, however, it DID have a special number). How does the manufacturer know if the specific problem affects the vehicle you own in particular? If i wanted to acquire an official copy of that TSB which refers to the problem I am having (and the problem my dealer is ignoring), how can I request an official copy to show my dealer how to fix it?

I got a print out of the TSB at my dealer. I then scanned the print out and posted it at Photopoint. The NHTSA web site does not give very good details of TSB's. They don't do a very good job in general considering how many people had to die related to Firetone's tires before the red flag was raised??

I don't know where you can get the TSB's other then at your local dealership. Because a TSB is not a recall, it's an internal bulletin released from Nissan to their service centers.

Hi, I just got my 2001 I30L and am trying to figure out all the control. There is a button label TCS off. If I press it, my dash board will show TCS off and then it goes away after a while. It never shows TCS on. How do I know if I have switch on Traction Control? Do I ever need TCS off?

Albert - The traction control system defaults to ON, unless you turn it OFF with the button on the dashboard. The TCS will go back to ON when you restart the car.
If you try to spin the front wheels, you will notice the TCS kicking in. It is not very smooth. If you turn it off, and then try to spin the front wheels, you will be able to tell the difference.
In theory, you should turn the TCS off if you are towing something.

I HAVE FINALLY LOST ALL MY PATIENCE WITH INFINITI. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY MY 2000 I30 WOULD BACKFIRE?. AMONGST ALL THE OTHER PROBLEMS WITH INFINITI MY CAR NOW BACKFIRES. I HAVE THE SPARK KNOCK STILL. I HAD TO TAKE IT IN SO THEY COULD VERIFY FOR THE 6TH TIME THAT IT STILL HAS A PROBLEM. AND AS I WAS PULLING INTO THE LOT THE CAR BACKFIRED. IT HAS DONE THIS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. I DO KNOW THAT THE 02 SENSOR IS OUT AND THEY CANT REPLACE YET. (IT WAS SUPPSOSED TO BE REPLACED SEPT 15TH). NO ONE AT THE CONSUMER AFFAIRS WILL RETURN MY CALLS AND IM NOW WORKING WITH THE BETTER B.B. TO HAVE THEM BUY BACK THE CAR. THEY ARE FIGHTING ME EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. MY MAIN CONCERN NOW IS THE BACK FIRE. IS IT SAFE TO DRIVE A CAR THAT BACKFIRES? I WILL BE GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND IT WILL MAKE A LOAD BOOM AND JUST JERK. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I HIT SOMETHING. WHEN THE SERVICE ADVISOR WAS WITH ME HE THOUGHT I HIT SOMETHING AS WELL. Arbitration in most cases is a waste of time. It usually is run and funded by the car manufacturers. Unless your state requires you to go through Arbitration first it usually is a waste of time. You need to document all attempts that your dealer has made to fix your car.

In your owners manual it will tell you about owners rights under your state lemon laws. It will spell out all the steps you need to take. It will also tell you if your state requires you to go through Arbitration first? Make sure when you bring your infiniti in for service you get a work order that clearly states why your car is in for service. I would always write a letter explaining why I was bringing my car in to back up my claims. After 4 attempts in most states the car is considered a lemon.

The easiest method is to hire a Lemon lawyer and let them do all the work for you. Their fee is paid my infiniti if they win the case. They usually will not take the case unless they know they can win it!!

I had a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee bought back by Chrysler in April. It took many letters and some other things that I will not mention here to get Chrysler to buy back my Jeep without a lawyer.

Remember keep great records, document everything and follow the guidelines spelled out in your owners manual. This will always include sending certified letters to Infiniti. Then see a good lemon lawyer it makes it much easier then doing it yourself. Good luck.

i guess it depends on whats causing the backfire. i own an 1984 Pontiac 1000(chevette, its my winter car). When the engine is cold on this car, and i am driving down the road at say, 40 mph and let off the gas, the car backfires. but only when its cold. i was told that my carburetor needs adjustment. i havent fixed it because its no big deal, it goes away when the car heats up. It was a big deal one time though. i was driving at about 50-55 mph and let off the gas. It sounded like a shotgun went off. after that, my car sounded funny, because the backfire of all backfires blew a hole in my muffler! let me remind you though, the muffler was 16 years old, so it probably didnt take much. anyways...

I disagree that arbitration is a waste of time. Up here in Canada we don't have lemon laws. But we do have an arbitration process administered by the BBB which is also funded by the various auto manufacturers. I utilized this process earlier this year to get Honda to buy back a defective 2000 Prelude SH. The whole process from handing in the application to getting my money took about 3 months which was way way way shorter than what it would have taken had I gone thru the legal system. And arbitration was completely free. George2kmax is absolutely right though about keeping records. Document every detail, everything said to you by anyone who ever worked on your car(exasperated mechanics and service consultants can be very candid about the problems you're encountering), diarize all work done. Make sure you get copies of all service orders. (My dealer changed their copy of the work orders to enhance their argument!) Good luck.

I live in New York, would it be possible for me to enact my lemon law rights, and have Infiniti buy back my car which is three years old? My Infiniti is a 97 and i have been experiencing various problems, and I've about had it with this car. Today I noticed that my car makes a howling noise at idle, it shakes my brake pedal. I dont know what it is! I'm worried, i'm scared of driving my car because it seems like every time I drive it, something new happens, and I dont want it to fall apart after only owning it for 3 years and only 22K miles! This is ridiculous! If anyone knows, please tell me if I can have them buy my car back even though its been this long (its still under warranty). TIA...

MY NEXT STEP IS ARBITRATION. I HAVE ALL THE DOCUMENTS. DO I NEED TO HIRE A LAWYER FOR IT OR SHOULD I WAIT? I TOOK IT BY THERE ON TUES AND IT DID MAKE THE NOISES AND BACKFIRED, THEY PUT IT IN WRITING FOR ME. MY BIGGEST QUESTIONS IS SHOULD I LET THEM FLY SOMEONE IN FROM CA TO LOOK AT THE CAR?

I think the heated seats in the I30/maxima are thermostatically controlled. If you turn on the heaters when the temperature is say 90 degrees then they probably won't activate. However if its say 20 degrees, then you'll be toasty.

When I bought my car last year (in August), I thought the heaters were defective. However during the first chilly fall day, the heaters worked great. I also noticed that during long trips, the heaters switched off and on numerous times. I think these heaters have a thermostat connected to the seats.

Used the heated seats for the first time today... Worked like a charm. They heated up real quick and felt warm and cozy.

I am seeing very poor gas mileage however. I only have 500 miles on the car. I'm wondering if this is because it's new.

I think part of it is because its new. I got much better mileage after say 2,000 miles or so. I went from an average of 23 mpg highway to about 26-30 mpg now (depending on how fast I'm going).

Keep an eye on it.

Has anyone had problems getting the tires in balance onthe 2000 I-30?? So far I have 5000 miles and 2 sets of tires and still feel the tires are out of balance.

I'm looking for a Trunk Organizer. I travel alot and need to organize my junk for work. When I purchased my I30 this weekend they tried to unload one on me that was outrageously priced.

I also would like to know if anyone has done a woodkit for their car.

Has anyone put the airfilter system in??

What about the heavy dury mats??

Come on ,,Has anyone had a problem with the tires on a I-30?? I have had 2 sets,Toyo and Michelin and neither one feels balanced..I have now 6000 miles and about 9 months on the car..It seems the condition is fixed and then the next time I get to 60 the problem is there again..At 75 t0 85 all is OK.Could it be the wheels are not up to specs??Would appreciate any positive comments..
