you are getting pretty close to a duel :)

i am in baltimore almost every weekend these days. you might just get schooled by a stock Jetta. if you see a silver Jet with tinted windows and VA tags, just pull over. you should hear me coming, with how much noise my tires make and all. hopefully i make it up there without sliding off exit ramps, hahaha.

had to get that in. all in good fun :)

Look for me too. White Jetta with the 17s, and "20V (red "V") TURBO on the right back corner. :) Also, mine will be a "Bora" after next week. :)

I think I am going to get the Eibach ones, because I can get the kit that includes the shocks that are tuned to work with the springs (Eibach ProSystem), or maybe even the ProSystem Plus, which includes a rear sway bar, all depending on my monetary situation at the time.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I can tell you from talking to a guy at a local performance shop that the springs will reduce body roll, as well as the shocks. You could get away with just doing the springs though, that's what I am doing. I know the ProSystem, it came highly recommended as well.

The stabilizer bars do more for stability (DUH!), but I think my car as is has great stabiliity.

    Ok, I asked for that.

I bought my tires from Discount Tire. I dunno why I typed Tire Rack.

It's amazing isn't it? You offer a real world comparison, I've offered a real world comparison...

    It's just denial.

Route 50 goes past my office in the back, and the direction going into Washington, DC is closed for some reason. We are about 15 mins. from DC. I wonder why it's closed and the other direction coming out of DC is open? I hope everything is ok...
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
vocus, probably a parade or some such PR manuever.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
well there is some humvee's set up around DC, armed with some missles, just in case.

Too bad I missed the Pentagon ceremony...damn meetings...
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Are you in the DC area? Just curious. I didn't know about the missles though...
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
My parents are in Manassas Park.

I saw the humvee's on CNN this morning waiting for the carpool.

I live in the Poconos in PA, work in North Jersey for the Army...yes I have one of those DoD stickers on my car. It adds 10 hp.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
missiles were set up the other day as a training excercise. Donny just said to go ahead and make the missiles "live". they also have troops with shoulder fired stingers in the shadows.

i would like some of those stingers for myself. i hate birds that poop on my freshly washed car :)

the rt.50 thing was just an accident. you can bet anything else would have been on the national news....
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Someone said there was a big accident at the route 3/50 interchange, but it's been closed pretty much all day. I wouldn't think it would take that much to clean up an accident. Also, I looked on the MD DOT website, and it said nothing about an accident closing the road.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
its on local news. see wusatv9.com, or washingtonpost.com

don't go that way home :)

does anyone have the cigarette lighter for the Jetta? my car came with an ashtray, but i just looked for a lighter, and i don't see one. just a little "flap" over where the lighter should be...

was mine stolen? or do i need to buy one?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
you had to pay extra for the lighter. most cars are that way now.

I'd sooner die a violent death at the hands of squirrels then ever let someone smoke in or near my car.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The Jettas don't come with a lighter.

I do smoke, but not in my car. I have always said I wouldn't smoke in any of my cars, and always end up breaking my rule. It's been almost a year thus far, and I have not broken it yet. This is the first car I ever had with leather seats though, and don't want them to stink like smoke. So the car will remains smoke-free. :)
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i guess it is just another cost cutting measure. my Honda was like that. not even an ashtray.

i only smoke when i drink, so my car doesn't smell too bad. thank goodness for leather instead of cloth. some people's cars reek of smoke. leather is a definite plus in those situations, smell wise.

i will research how much the lighter is. tired of losing my lighter under the seat. have you noticed if you stick your hands under the jetta seats, you can cut yourself. sharp stuff under there!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have lost my cell phone under the seat a couple of times. I always just move the seats up all the way, and usually can retrieve what I lost that way.
  • donnabgooddonnabgood Member Posts: 37
Justin it is 20 dollars for the smoker's kit. comes with a black ashtray *as opposed to the red coin holder, lighter and housing. I bought one and VW wanted 50 bucks to install the housing. Try the lighter on the cell phone and it works just fine and I am 50 bucks richer, which pays for about a month of Starbucks..be careful about throwing cigarettes out of a moving car window, not only is it littering and a big ticket, but it can end up flying back into the car and burning a hole in the back seat..leather is costly to repair, unlike cloth and you would hate yourself if something like that happened..best to always use the ashtray. Open the sunroof, use air freshner, rear window, and empty the ashtray after 1-3 cigarettes and no one would be the wiser that it is a smoker's car.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Quit smoking and you won't have to worry about burning the backseat or smelling up your car.

OK....my lecture is over, lets get back to jetta talk.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i only smoke on occasion. usually not during the week. UNLESS, i have starbucks. my purchase at starbucks almost always has me running around at work, looking for a smoke :)

my car doesn't smell. i use febreze on the mats....sucks out any smell!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Park that car for a couple of days without opening it, and you will KNOW it has been smoked in when you open it back up. I guarantee it.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The loaner car I have has the 15" tires on it, and wheel covers (no Luxury Pkg.). The thing is, I noticed yesterday when I was getting in the car that the tires are not Goodyears, but they are Michelins. I also noticed that the tires aren't as apt to squeal as the others 15" tired cars I have driven.

I still have the loaner today. The dealership never called me back about my car last night. Now they will have to wait until tomorrow to get their car back, I have plans to go out tonight and it's not my fault they couldn't finish the work in time.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Mine has Michelins from the factory, and while it doesn't handle fantastically or anything, I really have to throw it into a corner to get noise out of them.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
These seem to be more resistant to squealing than the Goodyears do.

I have a 2001 Wolfsburg Jetta. Does Anyone know if there is any difference between the 2001 Wolfsburg and a reqular 2001 1.8T Jetta engine.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
indeed, the goodyear tires on my 15" alloys on my first jetta were crap. they were recalled. the michelins on my 02 (same size and wheel) seem to be fine.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
There is no difference between the Wolfie and the standard 1.8T engine.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Actually, go to vortex. Many, many people have dynoed the engines of the early 2001 1.8Ts and the later 1.8Ts in the Wolfies. The Wolfie's have a different engine code and according to the dynos do produce more power. Some claim it was part of VW's constant upgrades (they do this all the time), and in this instance involved a change in the valve timing that would officially go into effect for the 2002 model year (with a new ECU).

Believe it or not. It's all over vortex still.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Oh yeah, I read something about that. The engine codes are different. There is AWW, AWD, and AWP. New 2002s are AWPs, I think the upgraded 2001s are AWDs, and the earlier ones are AWWs. Correct me if I am wrong...
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I have Michelins on my Jetta. I also had them on my Wife's Accord and they are really good (expensive) tires. I am not sure I have squealed them yet. Though I haven't really tried.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Vocus, don't recall any longer. Those are the engine codes though.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
So, can't the dealer just reprogram your computer to get the improvement? It would be one heckuva tuneup! I can't imagine them even charging for this...wait, OK, so maybe a $20 service fee for the 1 minute it takes.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
Why would they do that when they could talk you into buying a brand new 2002?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
anonymous...no. The ECU is entirely different on the 2001 v. 2002s. Also the 2002s had adjustments made to the exhaust and other areas.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Blueguy is right, it was a completely different ECU in the 2002 models. That's why they have 180hp from the same basic engine, vs. 150hp for the other ones.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
just a different setting. They turned the dial on the boost-o-meter among other things. When I heard that the 5 valve 1.8T made only 150 hp, I knew that someone at VW corked that engine. 150 hp is far from realizing the 1.8T's potential and VW did it on purpose so that they could bump power for free (basically) later in the model cycle.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
it is lame that the turbo in the Jetta makes more HP than the turbo in the Passat. and the V6 in the Jetta makes more than the 6 in the Passat.

silly. they should just make the turbo in the Passat 180, the v6 210-220, and leave the 8 at 275.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
150 --->180hp is something? I met a guy last night who did a Stage III upgrade chip on his 2002 GTI. It now makes 255hp at the WHEELS! Whistles like a sailor when revved! I sooo wanna do that, but don't have $2000 to do it. :(
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
What else is involved w/ this chip? How much HP at the wheels did the GTI have before the chip?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
They can't simply flash my ECU to give me the boost to 180. There are other differences in the engine's plumbing.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
For $2000 and 255 hp at the wheels, more than a chip is involved.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
That's why I said "among other things". They can flash your ECU and give you MORE than 180 hp. I don't know if it would drive as nice or be as reliable as the factory 180hp motor though. My main point was that with a turbo motor like the 1.8T, making more power is easy, especially since it was de-tuned in 150 hp form to begin with.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Not that much more. I talked to the performance guy face to face. He said the chip, 100-octane gas, a muffler, and that was it. 255hp at the wheels. They were dynoing the car right there when I came in.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The dyno for a 180hp GTI stick, running regular gas, on a 90 degree day, was 140hp at the wheels. They had that on file too. They noted that temperature affects these numbers too, which means it could have gotten higher.

Another one they did on a 60-degree day, totally stock, was running 156hp at the wheels.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Strongly considering an APR chip to tie me over until I buy a faster, more luxurious car.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
It has long been speculated that the Passat makes the same power as the 180hp Jetta, but is underrated on paper so people feel more justified in buying the V6.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
They say the same thing about the 1.8T Jettas... :)

Blue: The APR chip makes a good amount of difference, from what I have heard. I was at this performance shop when someone had it put in, and they said it did make alot of difference. Pretty good investment, but also add the Techtonics exhaust and stiffer springs.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
You're saying from 140 whp to 255 whp from a little exhaust change and a chip?

I'm having a hard time believing this one.

What did they do? Straight pipe the exhaust? I still don't see that and a chip adding 115 whp.
