I guess I figured out what it meant from context (amplified).

I don't know who Jim Rome is either.

    dork.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Not a fan of Rome's...had friends who listened to him in the early 90s during college. But I did love one incident with former Rams "QB" Jim Everrett. Rome used to call Jim "Chris Everett" (as in the tennis player) because, well Jim was a pansy who took phantom sacks and left every game injured. Rome was doing an interview with Chris and he kept calling him that. Chris threatened him and Rome kept going, inciting the pea-brain wannabe QB to attack. It was TV magic.

... was really a modified MGB, in case you didn't know. (Better to fake it than to film those scenes with a $2.5 million car of which only 55 exist.)

Jim Rome is a sportscaster? Does he drive a Jetta?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
    Moosecat...actually...

They used replicas for driving and a real one for static shots. I've read differing things (some say Vette, others MGB). Considering the vette is used as the base for a wide variety of kit cars, I'd imagine that'd probably be it.

By the way, it was cameron's dad's ferrari. ;)

Jim rome is a sports talk show host, not a sportscaster.

I know, I am wondering myself who this dork of a Jim Rome is. :)

Are there any posts that are on topic in this section and about the Jetta?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Do you guys know if a 225/50/16 will fit on the BBS rims of an 01 Jetta 1.8T that came with stock Crudyear Eagle 205/55/16s?

Wow, you guys must be sheltered. Rome's the guy that made "smack" and "scrub" such popular terms in sports. Like I said, I'm not a fan but I know his work. He's basically just Rush Limblob, Dr. Laura Yellatchaya, Howie Stern and Bill "I was the host of tabloid TV" O'Reilly for sports.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Oooh, I hate just about all of those people you mentioned in your previous post. I work in public relations, and have to deal with the likes of them everyday. Ugh.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I got my smoked side marker lights in the mail today, a cool $30 off EBay, including shipping. They look pretty good installed, and will match the smoked fender blinker and taillamps I plan to get eventually.

The best thing is, if I decide to get rid of the car (which I am not for a long time), I can take this stuff off and sell it.

The tinted lights look totally cool against my Cool White paint...
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
"...if a 225/50/16 will fit...that came with stock Crudyear Eagle 205/55/16s?"

Wouldn't 215/50R16 be the next step up then 225/45/R16?

"... "smack" and "scrub" such popular terms in sports."

Like smack a baseball? I think that was around before recently. Never heard of "scrub" in a sports sense.

"...Rush Limblob, Dr. Laura Yellatchaya, Howie Stern and Bill "I was the host of tabloid TV" O'Reilly for sports."

I know of them. They're OK. I am not so sure of Laura's real last name now that you put it like that. :-)

No, 225/50/16 gives you almost exactly the same size tire (in circumference) as a 205/55/16. There's a site online that does a break down for you.

Smack as in talking smack, or trash. You can put/lay the smack down, as in you're exposing something's faults or tearing down something.

For instance, calling VTEC Vanishing Torque in the Engine Compartment could be viewed as laying down the smack on Honda.

What can I say, i love my torquey 1.8T. :)
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    I guess it fits (heightwise).

You'll have to read the tire's specs to see if it fits your wheel width and try it to see if it fits in your wheel well.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
That's the issue. I don't know if my cruddy BBS rims will support a 225 tire. Anyone know?

If the title didn't say "Volkswagen Jetta" we'd never know that the Jetta is the subject of this conversation.

C'mon folks, you've been asked by a member of this discussion to get back on topic, and I will echo that sentiment.

There is a fine "chit-chat" topic in the Owners Club (see link at top of the page) called Meet the Members.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

I read the Passat is going to be redesigned in 2005. Finally, they are going to offer it with the diesel right here in the USA! I was curious if anybody has heard anything about a Jetta redesign. (2003 is the fifth year with this body style). Thanks.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
If I recall correctly, the Golf V will appear in early 2003, followed by the Jetta.

I think I read that we don't expect to get a new Jetta here until fall 2004.

But this is all from my murky memory. In any case, it's not gonna be anytime soon.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
Don't expect to see either of them in US or Canada until 2004 as 2004 or 2005 models. More likely as 2005's.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    convo???

Hey, how many Jetta designs were there? We have a 1996. I believe that is the third version, and we are currently on the fourth version, correct?

    Thanks.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Correct, and the 5th generation should be coming out in about two years.

    Convo = conversation I presume.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Gen I: 1983 (the debut)-1987 (thing I am wrong on this one)
    Gen II: 1988-1992
Gen III (what Anon has): 1993-1999
Gen IV (what most of us have): 199.5-current

    And so on...
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
that is crazy! i am taking the car in on Monday for an oil change, state inspection, seat heater switch fix, and going to have the guy i trust look at the coils. i want to see what they actually are....

i will let you know how it goes. think they will give me a beetle convertible as a loaner this time? if i put my foot down and scream really loud?
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
It is Jetta discussion and not a chat room.

Blueguy- I have BBS 16" wheels on my Jetta and I was told that 225 would not work on the Jetta, though I know the 225 size is used on 17" wheels.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Sorry for being electronically wrong. :) Discussion it is.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
52 posts since your last one is nothing? I have seen rooms fill up with 100 in a day.

What happend to your seat heater switch? And if you can get a Beetle convertible loaner, I should be able to get a Phaeton loaner with all the screaming I did with VWoA. :0
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
And here all along, I thought I was in a chat room.

Now I feel like a techno loser!

    So, it's called a "discussion"? I can't say I've read about those.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I'm guessing the wheels won't fit them then. Oh well, I would have loved some wider rubber.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
well, my heated seats in this Jetta have only ever worked on 5. which is too much for my bum and back. my first Jetta worked on 1-5. the switch just needs to be replaced.

plus, the other day, i was driving and my car started doing this little bucking/jerking number. all in 2 seconds or so. not done it since, but i had nightmares of evil coils. i had just filled up the tank. it was previously EMPTY. the dealer said since no engine light came on, it could have just been a brief gas line/bad gas thing. just want to make sure.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
the reason i say that about the gas is, remember, my first Jetta was traumatized when i ran it out of gas. the engine light came on, and would not turn off until i filled the car up twice. something about a vacuum or something.....

Jetta is kind of moody, huh?

did you notice that Edmunds just rated the Passat W8 as number 1 in near luxury sedan test, and C&D just rated it dead last in near luxury sport sedan test. interesting....

as usual, no other car maker out there causes so many different opinions that VW.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I would voice a concern over the jerking with the rest of the coils. I am surprised they didn't replace the entire set of coil packs when you had problems before.

With the seat heat, they should work on 1-5. Mine do. So the switches or contacts could be bad. I thought you took the car in for this before though?

With C&D, I did notice they rated the Passat W8 dead last but Edmunds rated it first. The same thing passed through my mind when I read the test online this morning.

a friend in HS had Celebrity Euro-Sport with the V6. for it's time, that car was FUN! cornered really well, and even though the V6 was probably only 140hp, it felt so fast compared to my Volvo. ahhhh, those were the days...
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have run my Jetta and several loaners down to the fuel light status, but none of the cars actually shut off from lack of gas. Did yours?

The loaner Golf I had took 14.1 gallons to fill up once though, and it's a 14.5 gallon tank. Never had problems with the engine light or anything though. I don't do that in my car though, I get gas as soon as the light comes on, if not before.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
oh, i ran the first Jetta OUT OF GAS. if my fuel light comes on, i still drive for a day or two usually. as you can see, i would rather chop off your fingers than stop and get gas. hate it. waste of my time.

the seat heater is a switch - we know that. just never have bothered to take it in.

it turns out, they replaced all of the coils they said. they could be lying of course...i have a feeling the car will be fine, but that little sputter the other day scared me.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You hate getting gas? You should have to fill up every 2-3 days like I do. I feel like I own a gas station sometimes, as much as I am in one. :0
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
How much fuel fits in your tanks? I have to fill up about every 715 miles or so. I usually can get about 16 gallons in the tank.
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
i would think it's a bad idea to run your car till there's no gas in the tank... it's especially true in older cars where sediments from bad gas such as dirt would get into the gas line ... what u guys think?

i never let my car's gas lite come on before filling up.... i use my delta mileage card to get gas ..for every dollar i spend on gas, i get 2 miles.. quicker way to my next vacation.. therefore, i actually look FORWARD to getting gas..lol
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
holy smokes.. Do you have the TDI? i have a maxima and get 330miles per tankful and it's a 15gallon tank. not sure about my gf's wolvie... but it's definitely not 715 miles per tank
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
he has a TDi. nice range, huh? i get the same each time. about 290 miles per 13 gallons of gas usually.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
Have a TDI Jetta and TDI Golf. 803 miles is the most miles traveled on one tank so far and this is with the Jetta.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
story on a TDI Volkswagen. They built an extra fuel tank in the back seat and drove the thing across country without stopping. I think they relieved themselves into various containers...
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
then we'd only need beer to go anywhere!

    :-)

    TGIF!
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
On any of my cars, I usually think about filling up (and do when possible) when it reaches about 1/4.

Of course, on our 1996, it has a leaky gas tank, and we never fill it past 2/3 unless going on a trip, and we know it will get used quicker than it leaks out.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Whoa, don't you think you oughta have that FIXED?

    Meade
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
Its just a leaky gas tank. Part of the VW experience :-)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
There was a guy at the VW meet I went to with a 1997 or 98 TDI Jetta. He had these tubes under the hood, and a container with vegetable oil in it. He said when the oil heats up, it's able to fuel the car. It's not just veggie oil, of course, but a derivitive of it. Pretty cool, I think. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
It's invasion of the Mazda people again...

Is that the clunk of another transmission going I hear, or is it the death rattle?

Of course, it just might be the sound of a window falling into the door of an MKIII...

(Notice I cracked on the Jetta as well in my statement, all in good fun. No flames allowed in here..) :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I am able to get like 13 gallons in the tank of my 1.8T when refueling with the low fuel light on. I never push it past the point where the pump cuts off several times. I know there is a method of hitting a valve or something in there to get more in, but I am kinda scared to do that.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    Just another "VW thing".

Really, I hate the dealership that much that I wouldn't want to go back there, ever.

What's the harm? It only leaks if it is filled over 2/3, and then it is only a drip. I don't like what it does to the driveway, so I don't fill it up.

    Stupid VW's.
