I was wondering if there was any way (besides a bra) at preventing paint chips on the front part of my hood. Mt 325i is black and as you can imagine, it is a concern. I already have a small chip after 500 miles. Does the dealer touch these up during maint.?

I have been reading your post about ED. Just want to thank you for the information you posted here. I called Joern today - he'll give me the same deal he gave you on a 325i. He was nice. I told him about your posting of his phone number - he sounded happy about it.
Thanks again. Please let me know if there's anything I should know about ED.

I have one those pesky chips on the hood also - It is unavoidable. I am pretty sure paint touch up is not covered under the full maintence warranty.

I know your dealer can sell touch-up paint/clear coat set for around $20. It worked well on my chip.

Take a look at the clear nose cover they are now offering.

Coming in to work tonight (I NEED A LIFE!), while cruising along a mostly straight back road, I had a guy in a Pontiac (one of the "Grand"s, Am or Prix) right on my bumper. I was driving ~55MPH in a 45MPH zone. Up until this point in time, I've managed to stay strong and by-pass driving confrontations, but this guy was being a real clown. I decided to play a little as we approached a posted 25MPH 'S' curve. I went into the first curve without braking (about 55MPH). The car started under-steering immediately. DSC seamlessly kicked in and put the car on the intended course. Setting up for the second curve, I decided to try to induce a little trailing-throttle over-steer. DSC said 'nope' and relatively violently brought the rear end back into line, upsetting the chassis' balance somewhat and slowed down egress while doing so. I'm just wondering if any of the more aggressive drivers on the list have had similar results... Brave1heart, I saw in an earlier post of yours that DSC did a good job of keeping the rear from stepping out (which it did in my case also), but did it do so smoothly or abruptly?

    thanks, terryk

HEY ALL....I was hoping to get some VERY honest input as far as actual maintenance cost for those owning a 323i and 325i. I seem to get some scary stories from some people about how they spend so much in maintenance on this car...frequent trips to get brake pads replaced, realignments done, etc. I understand that there is that 3-year or 36000 mile full-maintenance incentive, but how much of the car is REALLY covered??? I test drove an Acura TL Type-S and was impressed by its speed and performance for a mid-size sedan, but MAN, I couldn't really get over the interior after a second look....I thought maybe it was because it was the ebony and all. I thought this would be the CAR, but now I'm not so sure. I also test drove the IS300...also had some surprising torque and performance....didn't like the dash layout however...liked the dealership service and perks and the Lexus reliability and quality factor. HOWEVER, I kept thinking about how much fun it was to drive the 325i....absolutely loved the performance, especially the road-handling manners and sure braking. I also loved the style and layout of the interior....I think the car is about the sweetest looking four-door compact sedan out there. Two things I'm a little unsure about...reliablity and unscheduled maintenance costs over say 5 years and it being a compact (I really thought about getting a mid-size at first). ANY input at all would be GREATLY appreciated...I will probably be going back to the dealer next Saturday, since he told me it would be about 9 weeks for production of the one I want....Thanks ALL... and tell all the maintenance stories you want...I just want input I guess...

I just bought a 1999 323i. Great looking/driving car. I do have a question... opened up the oil filler cap, and you can't really see any of the liters or apparatus, there is only a plate blocking the view, but the plate had quite a bit of dark, sludge-like oil on it. Is this normal. It sort of spooked me for a 20k car. Any thoughts? I haven't been able to validate any of the service data since this was a leased car, and I bought it from a specialty firm that deals in used Bows. There reputation is good though.

I went through the same thing before buying my BMW. I heard the price of ownership horror stories from many people, but then one day I realized that most of them never even owned a BMW. Of the few that did, they were all back in the 80's. BMW has come a long way in reliability since the eighties. Scheduled maintenance, up until recently, involved valve adjustments and timing belt replacements... both of which were fairly costly, but are no longer maintenance items. Anyway, I started talking to current owners and for the most part, they were not too concerned with the cost vs. most other cars. Will a BMW be as trouble free as a Honda? On average I would say no. Will it cost a little more than a Toyota to maintain? Probably. But if you love to drive and can afford/justify the slightly higher cost, I doubt you'll regret buying the BMW.

For what it's worth, I also looked at the two cars you mentioned above. The lexus was too 'childish' in a few of the design elements for my tastes. Someone above put it very well when they said that they felt like they needed a piece of bubble-gum when sitting in it. :-) The Acura was a pretty nice car that simply lacked soul. The lack of a manual tranny didn't score many points for either car in my book either.

As for the size, that's too personal for anyone else to help you with. I like smaller, tossable cars, but my wife has a minivan we use for vacations, shopping, and whatever else requires a larger vehicle. My two children (7yrs and 9yrs) fit fine in my "Ci", and that's all I really cared about.

Good luck in whatever decision you make!

Hi all- Thanks for the quick responses! Today I test drove the 330 with the sports pkg. Fell in love. The car has such a connected feel. Anyway, I'm taking delivery of my Steel Gray/Tanin Red 330 next week.I got the sport package, 5 speed manual, premium, and heated seats. I look forward to making some comparisons with my 2002 TL-S in the near future. I also look forward to becoming an active member on this site. Thanks again for all of your help!

Does it have sand leatherette or black leather? They have two. The one with black leather is showing "produced, not shipped" (it will go to Port Hueneme on the same ship as mine !!), the sand leatherette car is in production, "150" status meaning it's scheduled for production.
Sorry, but if yours is one of these (and I suspect a week 20 car is!), it is a little late for changes. Did you want to change the transmission? You've got a Steptronic and if you are driving around San Diego area, I don't think you made a bad decision.

I got an appointment to have the steering retro fit done on my 330Ci. The soonest my service dept. could get me in is in nearly a month. I realize you cannot speak for my dealership's service department, but was wondering if you may know if, across the board, steering 'fixes' are getting low priority or if maybe the parts availability is lagging demand. Any input?
    Thanks, terryk

I want to sell my 325i sedan and buy a 330i sedan. What comes standard now on the 330i? From reading earlier posts, I got the impression that the HK Upgrade, PWR MEM seats, Fog Lights, and Climate Control are now standard. Is this true? Is there anything else standard that I don't know about? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Alp :o)

postoak: your pricing looks accurate. jpcbearden was offered the same deal from Joern on a 325i (post #2804), so you should be set.

sandecki: Euro delivery is available on leased cars also. I purchased, so cannot give too many specifics, but there are some restrictions with regards to leased cars. I believe you are limited to 30 days maximum stay (vs. 3 or 6 months I think on a purchase). Also, leased cars are not insured when driven into former Eastern bloc countries. Poastoak is correct on the payment - it must be made in full 30 days prior to your delivery date in Munich. I don't know how that works if you are leasing, but be sure to give Joern Esser a call at Passport BMW in Maryland (that's not too far from NJ, is it?) He handled my deal and is an excellent sales contact. I posted his phone number one or two days ago.

jpcbearden - glad I could help. I asked Joern if he wanted me to send him referrals, to which he responded with a resounding "Yes!" When are you scheduled for delivery? If you have any specific questions with regards to ED, I can try to answer them.
  • jpcbeardenjpcbearden Member Posts: 37
will pick up the car on the 3rd of september. the dealer here(phoenix) told us we need to place order 3 months before the pick-up date.
did you pay for tax? last year i checked there was no tax for ED. i heard it has been changed this year. did you pay MD tax or TX tax?

    Hi all,

I'm a newbie and was curious about the benefits of the sports steering wheel compared to the regular four spoke model. Do the fewer spokes facilitate quicker turns and is the wheel diameter smaller?

I have a question concerning ignition timing. I understand that the timing is advanced in response to an increase in the throttle position and higher fuel octane. Wouldn't the engine perform better if the timing were permanently set for the maximum advance?

Thank you in advance to whomever responds to my newbie questions.

    Parump
  • gurumikegurumike Member Posts: 442
parump - it's basically just style. I'm sure some people will say that it's easier to manipulate, I'm not convinced it really matters.

alpine325 - you'll need to change name! anyway, sport suspension, HK sound, power memory seats were the additions in March production. Auto climate control always was standard on 330.

Hi. Can you check the status of my bimmer? It's a 330xi: jet black/black, manual, premium, sport, cold weather, xenon, cd -- going to Long Island, NY. Can you tell me what week the car is scheduled for production, and if BMW is actually a month ahead in their production schedule as some people on this board believe?
  • sandiegobluesandiegoblue Member Posts: 2
Yes, mine is the one with the sand leatherette and your right that the change I was thinking of was from the STEP to the stick.
I appreciate your response. Do you happen to know anything about the PERMA PLATE product for protecting the paint?
  • gurumikegurumike Member Posts: 442
I see cars like that going to White plains and Freeport, would one of those be yours? They are both in 111 so it's looking like a June car right now.

sandiegoblue - if you like to wash your own car and polish/wax it every few months, save your money. If your go to the local car wash, it might be worth it. Is there a free re-application after a year?

I've enjoyed so many posts as of late--braveheart1's description of recent outings in the 325i have me thinking about my pending delivery (yet over 1.5 months away! Arrghh!) night and day. It's not the status (who gives a bleep), not even the luxury, but the PURE driving pleasure--the rasp of the inline six, the taut suspension/handling, etc.--that has me awash in fantasy/quasi-insanity. Yesterday, I printed the ENTIRE 3-series manual from the website and have been reading it religiously (yes, I've wittingly deprived my employer of 203 pieces of printer paper and God-knows how much toner--I'm not proud of this, nor am I encouraging anyone to do the same). My lame jet-ink printer at home would take 10 hours to do it and/or explode in the process. This is how I rationalize.

So, all you 3-series owners out there, REJOICE in your pleasure. LOVE your car--name your 3, inhale that new car smell deeply, and become one with your Ultimate Driving Machine. For those of us in the present lowlands/private hell, we have to suffer in the meantime. To have test-driven is to have loved for a moment. To have taken Euro-delivery is to have tasted sweetness only to endure six weeks of painful w/drawal (I could not bear this, so I chose not this way).

To my future 325Ci, as you lie in unextruded/unwelded/unassembled pieces, we will soon be together...sniff.

Man, is it getting late. See what a 2 am stogie and cognac will do to ya? Sorry, everyone. Perhaps sleep will dull the pain.

The MB Quart system will put you way over budget of $1500. Here's a great system for $1500 to $1600. Front Doors: (1) JL XR525-CS 2way System $375. Rear Deck: (2) JL XR525-CW'S Component Drivers $175. Subwoofers: (2) JL 12WO4's $200. Amplifiers: (1) Eclipse 3640 4 Channel Amplifier for the front doors and the rear deck $280. (1) Eclipse 3620 2 Channel Amplifier for the Subwoofers $225. (1) 2 12" Subwoofer Enclosure $75. Total before install: $1,330 You can find this system at "Tweeter"(Bryn Mawr Stereo's new name). This is high end stuff that is very close to MB Quart, But for half the price. This system will give you the most bang for your buck, Alp :o)

Anyone out there have a similar problem to me? My 330cic gas pedal is sticking with any modulation up or down but only with small movement like used to change lanes. I know my car has "drive by wire" and the resistance I feel is synthetically created. I tried silicon spray without any luck.
  • jimbresjimbres Member Posts: 2,025
Your car is identical to one that I have on order: steel grey / tanin 330i with stick, PP & SP. I live in the metro NY area - Long Island, to be exact - & placed my order in early April for July delivery after my salesman told me that there were no 5-speed 330i's in stock anywhere in the mid-Atlantic region. But you, you lucky dog, apparently found one for immediate delivery. Where do you live?
  • susie701susie701 Member Posts: 4
I ordered a BMW 325 xi in early April. My dealer said that they'd get enough allocations for a June build and be here in early July. Even though we were going to have to go with only one car (wanted to sell our other car before buying a new one), we thought a BMW was worth the wait. To make a long story short...we won't have a car in July. The dealer says he only got one 325 allocated (from S. Africa) and couldn't find another dealer to swap. All of this is hard to tolerate. I wonder if they gave our allocation to a buyer who had loaded up the 325 more than us. Anyway...we've got to buy a car this week. One car won't cut it. But BMW is out!! Don't count on a car unless your dealer gives you an production #!!! Don't believe their promises of allocations!
  • platypusplatypus Member Posts: 192
Yes, you have to pay tax. You've always had to pay tax. The only way you can get around it is by keeping the car in Europe for more than six months.

Tax is paid according to your state of residence, not where the car is purchased. (If the latter were the case, we'd all be purchasing cars from Washington state - no sales tax). Since I puchased out-of-state, I did not have to pay tax at the time of car payment. I will pay my Texas taxes when I register the car here locally.

I'm surpised that the earlist delivery you could get was September. When I ordered in March, Joern was able to secure an April 25 pick-up date for me. I sensed that demand was slowing. In September, you're on the cusp of the 2002 models.

Hi- Believe it or not, I actually live in the Island as well. I called all the dealers in NY(Rallye, Hassal, etc.) Right now, however, I'm at my Florida home. I'm buying it here in South Florida and driving it back home to NY. It might well be the longest test drive!!!! I'll post my impressions and comparison with the TL-S ASAP! Regards.....

    Saturday night quickies

DSC - it is always on when you start the engine. No light comes up under these circumstances. The light comes up temporarily only if the DSC kicks in (typically under aggressive maneuvering) and it is constantly lit up if you switch it off. I have seen it come up a couple of times during aggressive cornering with Strumpf Muscle and it actually works pretty well to prevent the back end from coming out and maintaining balance.

jakep - congrats on your new ride!! 'I do not want mechanics pulling my new car apart for no reason'???? Getting the old steering is a very good reason for me and I'd like them to do whatever they need to do so I can get a better on-center feel. But I am taking the same approach as you - enjoying it and taking it one step at a time.

postoak - The technologies that I work with are not exactly old; they are just not as cutting edge as some of the new XML stuff out there. I work with PeopleSoft applications. Ver. 7 and 7.5 have been around for about 3 years; Ver. 8 has an internet-based architecture but it has not been massively implemented by Fortune 1000 companies yet. PeopleSoft uses dozens of different tools and they are all proprietary stuff.

erickson - I am very happy to see that my ramblings have made a small difference in at least one person's life. You won't be disappointed by the car - it's all good.

Well, going out for sushi and some sake tonight and going to see Driven later. I can't wait to see those special effects. Not keeping my hopes very high on the acting but the effects should be phenomenal. They sealed off a part of Chicago to shoot the movie? I would've loved to see that on Storrow Drive in Boston.

From this morning: Motor racing fans will probably enjoy the movie. The special effects are overdone but still a lot of fun. The plot and character development are laughable and serious movie goers will be disappointed unless they love racing.

Several people have indicated that BMW's German plants are far ahead of schedule. For example, someone (I think lewparker) said his week 21 car was in production by or before April 26. This indicates that BMW is almost 4 weeks ahead of schedule. Can you confirm this?

If my car is scheduled for week 25, would it then follow that I might expect it to be in production at the end of this month? If so, would it be reasonable to expect delivery in Maryland in late June or early July?

Also, can anyone tell me how I can get in touch with BMW NA by phone???

I almost feel your pain but I can't stop laughing. I hope that sleep dulled some of your pain. I am afraid you'll turn into an alcoholic by the time you get your Bimmer. You know, I had attached pictures of the BMW that I was getting on my fridge and sometimes I'd go get a beer and start staring at the pictures (just TWO to be precise!!) for 10-15 min at a time. By the time I was done looking at them, I was ready for another beer. Let me tell ya, little has changed with the fridge story even now that I've had the car for a week. Only difference is I'd go stare at the REAL car instead of those two measly pictures on the fridge. With all my late night walks out, my wife's beginning to think I have a lover or something. I tell her she's damn right about it - I do. It's parked in front of the door :o)

I know from kart racing experience that sliding typically slows you down and it only rarely helps. When I drive aggressively, I try to drive on the limits of adhesion (I've developed a good feel for it) and I try not to have the DSC kick in. The couple of times that I pushed the car over the edge and it came up, it didn't feel TOO abrupt and it only stayed on for about a second or two. I get the feeling from your post that you were pushing the car extremely hard in order to have the DSC kick in. I haven't done this yet. Knowing that DSC works off the ABS system, I'd be guessing that yes, it would slow you down significantly if you were way past the limits of adhesion. It's good to know that it is there to keep you in line if you underestimate the turn but ideally, you shouldn't rely on it. As far as sliding, it can be a lot of fun and I do plan on switching my DSC off when I'm ready to go power sliding in turns. I think I'll wait till my tires are almost worn out for this, though.

Why does it sound like everyone on this board is waiting for their 325/330 to be built. I'm here in California and just got a 330i off the lot (march production one that had the free HK Stereo upgrade) a few weeks ago. I went to a dealership and they literally had 30 325's and 20 330's and that was only one dealership. I another one I went to had a little less, but there was plenty of supply....Guess other Southern California's get a better selection :-).....So much for that electricity crisis....Good luck to you all. Guess I get to enjoy myself!

    Friends,

I've been corresponding with out host Pat RE. how to improve this board's technology. My idea basically is to have a better search engine and especially availability of discussion threads within the same board. There is no need for a separate Owners' club and a 3-series board - we all want to be ONE big happy family on the same board but have discussion threads to different topics of interest that allow you to weed out the topics that you are not interested in. Also, we'd be able to see at a glance the topics that generate the most interest that way. This is our opportunity to make out lives here on this board better. Edmunds.com is currently in the process of overhauling their search engine and we have to tell them what we like so we can get it. Please send you suggestions to pat@edmunds.com. My perfect board would be one that has the bimmer.org BBS technology with the quality of people, posts and discussions from edmunds.com. Fun and education sans the profanity. Any ideas?

brave1heart, you didn't give me a chance to answer your email!

I am not the one to whom you folks want to make your suggestions on how to improve this site. That is best done by using the "Online Support" link on the left sidebar of this page.

I have no input whatsoever into the redesign of the Search engine or any other feature of Town Hall. Brave1heart, I was simply passing on information to you. :-)

Personally, I believe that Town Hall's 3-Series Owners Club Board can be used to give you most of the features you are looking for. Separate discussions relevant to the 3-Series can be set up there simply by asking your host KarenS to do so. You can subscribe to the entire Owners Club folder by accessing that choice at the bottom of the main Owners Board discussion list. Then you can use "Read Subscriptions" to easily move through all new posts in all the discussions without ever having to go to the main list.

Or you can go to your Message Center to see exactly which discussions have new posts and access those from there.

For those who have not tried subscribing to the entire 3-Series Owners board, I encourage you to give it a shot. The Town Hall Help section can give you all the details - you'll find a link to that on the left sidebar of this page also.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heartening reply! I fully expected some to respond with, "Get a grip", "Get a life" or "Get help." But you give me hope b/c you truly have felt my pain. It's actually quite funny. Even my roommates are laughing with, no, "at" me about my obsession w/ my pending BMW. I've compiled two folders. One with modifications (Dinan, Bekker) and one with accessories. I'm trying to plan out the upcoming purchases without having to sell the farm.

BTW, I spoke with a Dinan tech specialist. He informed me that a stage 1 download (chip) is not required if you get the CAI and the stage 2 download. That should get you an additional 9 horsepower. The freeflow exhaust has finally been developed and is awaiting release to market probably w/in the next month or so. No indication as to the total hp/torque increase with that. The freeflow exhaust had to be revised b/c the 323 formerly had a single inlet pipe exhaust, whereas the 325 has a dual inlet. This is all VERY good news.

So far, I've decided that I will add the above no more than a month after delivery, as well as the white tail-light markers, Dinan badging (reads Dinan 3 in place of 325Ci), and all-around window tinting (30% or so). I want to keep the car fairly stealthy, nothing ostentatious. I don't want to end up on www.riceboypage.com. The matte-chrome trim (like 330) may have to wait. It costs about $400 on the circlebmw site.

Thanks for the info about the free HK upgrade for the 330i. I'm definitely going to put in my own aftermarket system though. Black Sapphire sounds like an awesome color! It's good to see BMW drop their prices and add some free stuff for the 330i. I thought the car was overpriced to begin with, but now it's a little easier for people to afford it. Have fun with the new car! Alp :o)
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
Did you get pricing on the CAI and the stage 2 download? How much is Dinan charging for a 'Unit of labor', as they describe it? How much is the free-flow exhaust on top of this? Do they recommend getting the free-flow for max performance gain from the CAI and stage 2?

One thing I'd advise you to do is take it one step at a time. Get the car, enjoy it, see how it goes - maybe you'll love it just the way it is and you won't want to change anything, who knows...I'd decided for myself that what I was getting was totally sufficient for me and I could live with it for many happy years just the way it was. If I can gain cheap HP and/or acceleration improvement, though, I'd be happy to do it. But I am definitely going to wait till the car has had a chance to fully break in before I make up my mind.

Brave1heart; Dinan defines a labor unit as 1/10 of an hour. The hourly labor prices would be defined by the service dept. you use to have the parts installed.

brave1heart; I wanted to add to my above post that the dealership at which I bought my car has an 'Dinan Authorized' service department. A quick glance at Dinan's page lists BMW GAllery in Norwood, MA as the only dealer in Mass.

Thank you for looking up my car for me (330xi, manual, pp, sp, cd, cwp, x) yesterday. Mine is the one going to freeport, ny. You mentioned that it looks like a june car; does that mean it'll go into production in june or that i should have delivery by june? My dealer told me that it's supposed to be a week 25 production, and when I placed the order with her she mentioned that most likely it will be a late june delivery date with a possibility that it may be in july. I hope it can be delivered by june b/c although I applied for th 5.9% financing before the end of april, my dealer told me that if the car doest arrive by the end of june, the rate will go up to 6.5%.
thanks again for looking up my car.

Based on the research that I've done so far, the CAI would definitely require the Stage 2 download, so the increased air flow and back-pipe pressure would be managed better. I will work with some assumptions here - just slap me if I am way off on this:
Dinan says that "The combination of the Stage 2 Engine Software and Cold Air Intake System produces a 7 horsepower and 6 lb/ft torque gain on 325 models."
If a labor unit is 1/10 of an hour, then 10 units make one hour. I will use $80 an hour as the average that I would expect to pay.

    Here is the pricing:
    Stage 2 dnld: $300 + 5 units (or $40)
    CAI + K&N filter: $550 + 25 units (or $200)
    -----------------------------------------------
    Total $850 parts + $240 lab = $1,090

In my estimate, the 330i is about 5 grand more expensive than the 325i w/ equivalent options. Official HP difference is 41 horses (225 - 184), or about $125/pony. In Dinan's case, you get 7 horses for $1,090, or about $155/pony. Definitely more expensive, although I suspect that drivability will be improved substantially and overall acceleration may be improved by more than what the 7-pony gain at 6,500 rpms reflects. Still not sure if it's worth it but at least it's nice to know that incremental improvements in performance don't cost outrageously more than going from the 325 to the 330. I think when you add drivability into the equation, the per-pony price may be very similar. What do you guys think?
