I think that Taurus is the one with the 2 valve/cylinder V6. I rented one once, and I could have sworn it was a 4 cyl because of its lack of power. I looked under the hood and I couldn't believe it was a V6. I think Ford makes a 4 valve/cylinder V6, but I'm not sure which Taurus it comes in. So your comparison may be a little off since the Taurus SES doesn't compete with the others in terms of power.
• teoteo Member Posts: 2,508
Has the 3.0L DOHC 24-Valve Duratec engine standard. The engine produces 200HP. I think that including the Taurus SES is indeed relevant to the comparison.

Probably the one you drove is the 3.0L OHV 'Vulcan' V6 engine which is one of Ford's most ancient and ineffcient engines in their lineup. The Vulcan is rated at 150HP.

Ford stopped producing a version of the Taurus with a 4-cylinder engine back in 1987. It was the only Taurus ever produced with a 5-speed manual Transmission. It was called the Taurus MT-5 and it was equipped with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. It was soon dropped due to poor reliability and sales of that model.
• redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
I checked the specs on Edmunds site here. The SES has the 155-hp engine, the SES with the Deluxe package gets you the Duratec 24-valve setup. The one I rented was definitely the standard SES. The power was pathetic!

I bought a new 99 Intrigue w/ the 3.5 engine. Recently, I am hearing a buzzing sound from the engine just behind wheel on the driver side? The dealer I've been dealing with first claimed they didn't hear it. The second time I brought it in, they claimed that it was normal. It sounds a lot like the sound from my old Delta 88 where the engine had to be replaced due to something being worn out in the engine.

Is this a known problem or am I just one of the unlucky ones? Anyone know what could be problem?

There's more to the cost of owning a car than just resale value. I'm a bit busy right now, but Edmunds can also estimate the cost of ownership, including insurance, fuel, maintenance, etc, and the last time I compared, an top-of-the-line Accord cost as much as a Bonneville SLE to own over 5 years...
• redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
I get a buzzing sound sometimes right after I start the car. Does it go away?
• jg28jg28 Member Posts: 257
But I guess I'll sneak in and watch the first few minutes. It looks way WAY scarier than the first one. But if the Intrigue's in it, I'll have to see it. I'm just glad you didn't tell us that it was being crushed by some T-Rex (unless, of course Sam Neill says "look at how this safety cage is holding up."

Can you all explain upshifting and downshifting to me?
• redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
jg28 - whenever you are driving along and you press the gas pedal to the floor it will usually downshift automatically into 2nd gear. The rpm's usually jump way up to 5,000+. Although once I floored it and the car downshifted into 1st gear. That was a real kick in the [non-permissible content removed]!

Upshifting occurs when you are accelerating and the rpm's drop. The transmission shifts into a higher gear. It's hard to feel sometimes because the Intrigue shifts so smooth. I usually end up in 4th gear around 45 mph.

Broad Ripple area, East Kessler Blvd. or 59th St.. I remember the Fishers area..Also lived on 86th St east of Nora.. Had a summer place in Monticello, Indiana--Lake Freeman. Left Carmel in 1964 moved to Cleveland, 1968 moved to Grosse Pointe, Mich-1980 moved to Crystal lake Ill, 1982 moved to Kalazamoo, Mich, then in 1984 back to Grosse Pointe, Mich..

That pretty well covers the 100 yrs..

Teo:::::Glad to see the Chevy placed well in somebody's rating scheme.. I personally think the Intrigue figures are too high..None of it is real world; however it does show the relative rankings which I have no problem in believing.

The Intrigue is more fun than the others; but a dog in resale value.. I put a quick 400+ miles on today in 90 degree weather.. believe me there was no dead air today for it rolled..

The side moulding on the Impala is a one color covers all..Everything is done with price as the main factor and you would be surprised how many corners have been cut to hold the cost down..

Does the Impala LS have the 3.05 axle???

In looking at the V-6 Accord figures; you can buy a new one for less than the 22 or 23 figure you have shown!!!

Speaking of Danny Sullivan and the year he won the Indy 500..Five laps from the finish he did a 360 between 1st and 2nd turns in the short chute, narrowly missing Andretti who ran out of gas couple laps from the end..

I think I got it right about Andretti; but it was a different finish and put the ex-taxi driver Danny in the chips..

Well, a fully loaded 2001 black GLS should be mine by this time tomorrow. The salesman came through and found a black one in Aiken SC which had only been in inventory 30 something days and the dealer was willing to trade. It is fully loaded including the gold trim package and MSRP is $29,360. I'm getting the car for about $24,400 after discounts. Not bad for a fully loaded car. I think the vehicle selling price before discouts was about 3% over invoice due to the fact that the $100 over special was only for in stock units and this one has to be trucked in on a flatbed. I still felt it was a good deal. He said that GLSs were very hard to find as Olds didn'd build many for 2001 as they didn't sell well last year, but now with the discounts and long warranty they are selling pretty well. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes.

teo : Never buy a Taurus period.

9899olds : IRL program was a waste of money, I agree. Chevy is in next year to waste some more. I think they will use it to promote a win at the Indy 500. Aurora V8 is reliable and has decent power. For the money it's good. It's nothing compared to the CART Ford/Honda engines though.

focus : Got the invoice from www.carcostcanada.com. Well worth the $40. I think my GL with options invoiced for around C$27K. I paid C$27,900 and got 4.9% over 60 month. You can get 0.9% for 48 now or 1.9% for 60 months.

mosaix : Congrats on the GLS. Let us know how you like it.

You'll laugh more than you'll be scared. But there are quite a few suspenseful moments.

mosaix::: Congradulations!!!! Excellent choice! Numbers sound pretty good. Glad you got the color of your choice.

That pretty well covers the 100 yrs..

hehe, I doubt your that old

what was Carmel like when you left? how big? been there recently?
• 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
mosaix::::::My 99 is a black GLS with all the goodies except Bose.. At 47k miles it is pristine, garaged every night, and flogged daily.. The interior is like new and all systems work perfectly..Intrigues are a common sight in the Michigan area..Sticker on mine was 27,200 w/3.5.. FYI::::this is my second Intrigue. The two-owner club is very small; just another "Senior Moment". Your deal was decent and certainly trust it treats you well..people tend to nitpick the hell out of the car..

I have accepted the car for it's merits; but it also has its weak moments..I trust that the late 01 model has solved some of the 98/99/00 problems..Since my car is a victim of 90% interstate/open road travel the 50k mile mark usually is time to do the brakes for the first time but the Intrigue chews up brakes so it's constant problem..Tires are thin; struts seem to be performing well and engine shouldn't need anything..

redly one:::::Carmel was a growing community and haven't been back for 10 years..My family was involved in the real estate end starting in the 54th to 59th st areas and ending in the Nora area..I no longer own any property in the state..

The infamous spin and win. There was no way Sullivan could make that pass stick. He was too low. Something had to give and it did.
Probably one of the greatest moments in auto racing.
He did go on to win the race. His only.

The Andrettis have the worst luck.
I remember a race in Miami in the '80s. It was on a streetcourse and there was an accident on the outside of a turn. The sightlines were blind due to the high walls. The cart safety truck was behind the stricken car and here comes the field.
Everyone made it through the corner and around the safety truck save for Mario Andretti who promptly crashed into the back of it and almost went underneath the bumper. The next car to come through the corner is his son Michael who proceeds to crash into the back of his dad. Scary but funny all at the same time.
This crash led to the safety car having lower bumpers installed.
Sometimes you make your luck due to your own stupidity, other times you just have bad luck. The Andrettis have that in abundance.
• 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
The Andrettis has done well in spite of the bad luck syndrome surrounding the name..The younger one is a little more aggressive than dad..The circuit is being invaded by the offshore guys who really are a little on the reckless side..but seem to get away with it..We don't really have too much domestic talent..

With Dale gone I stopped watching the Nascar bunch until son Jr. gets a good grip on the situation..Jeff Gordon still eats up the track very well and he learned alot from the old #3..

Speaking of cars::::the Monte Carlo SS is the only 3.8 powered GM car with Goodyear RSAs as std..which I assume has a speed limiter at 130..Should be running through the 3.05 axle..The Intrigue PCS equipped runs to 130 approx, and the 3.8SC GTP runs the 130..The GP-GT w/3.8 is a 108 limited and all the Regals are 108ers.. The Bonneville SSEIs are RSA equipped and limited to 130..

Really doesn't make any difference but just curious about my conclusions and if they are correct without scanning tests..I am sure some of our resident forum auto experts will post facts and data..Hop aboard and pile on..

• jg28jg28 Member Posts: 257
So, if I can really tell when my car shifts into second, do you think there's a transmission problem? All of you talk about the smooth transmission but I've noticed that mine isn't that smooth at all (2000 GX, no PCS)

One2one, I don't think I wanna see it but I will sneak in to see the Intrigue. Please tell me it's a black one. I can't believe they didn't use a black Intrigue for the XFiles. And why was it featured as a rental car? That never made sense to me. Oh well.

I backed up into the mailbox and made a footlong scratch deep into the primer on the left driver side rear fender. It's such a horrible scar. Whole panel has to be repainted :(
• redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
jg28 - if you are accelerating quickly and the car is shifting at high rpm's it will be more noticeable because of the drop in rpm's when the transmission shifts into higher gear. But under slow acceleration you really shouldn't notice it too much. When you say it is really noticeable, are you feeling it (getting a jolt) or are you hearing a noise? Check your transmission fluid to make sure that it is at the proper level and the fluid is a nice clear pink color. Dark fluid may indicate a transmission problem.
• b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Second is always more noticeable. Third should be very smooth. Overdrive and then the torque convertor locking up should really not be felt that much.
• 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
Don't ask us; take it to the dealer and leave it..Tell them to fix it..My 99 GLS w/3.5 shifts beautifully at 90mph and it gets settled down to serious business.. GM doesn't make transmissions that are crappy; they are smooth shifting and reliable..believe me I don't screw around with automatics..They don't fix themselves; somebody has to press the problem..

Solution:::::put it in 2nd and run it up to 6k rpms; them run it up to 6k in 3rd and shift.. Keep repeating this until the trans fails; then you get a new one..

If it doesn't fail; keep trying..

Sounds like you have another sleepy Olds dealer..Olds dealers have a big problem with warranty work, why, you will ask????? because when the GM says its done making cars all those warranty claims will be rejected by GM..The dealer eats the charges...

Got a call at the office this afternoon and it was my salesman, seems the truck from Aiken SC was late getting in and the car will not be detailed and ready for delivery until tomorrow. At least it is now in town, so hopefully by tomorrow it will be in my possession. I'll let you guys know how I like it. I suspect I will like this car alot!

A while back, I had an intermittent problem in my Intrigue with my rear windows not rolling down every once and a while.

Just talked to my dad, who owns a 98 Buick Century. Seems they are having the same problem, but worse. It's hapenning with all 4 windows in his car!! Sometimes, they roll a window down, and it wont come back up. Eventually, after minutes, hours, or even days, it will come back up. He is quite frustrated with it. Luckily, he is planning on selling it soon (though, I can just see it fouling up when he goes to sell it)

Anyway, I seem to remember some other folks talking about window problems a while back. Has anyone ever figured out a solution or cause to this problem?

I figure the Century is enough like the Intrigue that the same problem is causing grief in both vehicles.

9899Olds: 10 years, huh. I bet you'd be surprised what's in Carmel today. Can you say Yuppie Urban Sprawl?
• b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
We talked about this about a year ago. Mine had it too. I think there were about 4 other people on this booard who were experiencing it.
I was on the tahoe board about the same time and it was an epidemic.
Seems it was a supplier problem. GM knew about it and was working on it. I haven't heard about it recently until yours.
Get that window fixed under warranty.
• 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
sprawl=growth; great stuff, creates lots of good things..

b4z:::::Motor City is going through more cuts; auto suppliers are not healthy and the worst is yet to come..Lost one of my contacts Thursday; total surprise; always is, but in this case he was busy big time..This slump is being billed as something of a slowdown; that has happened and the bottom is still not in sight..

3.5 update at 47k miles:
2140 miles is down 1qt from change..
petrol mileage for the last 363mi was 26.7 and under that's real great considering the drive..

The delivering Olds dealer service mgr called and wondered when they would see the car; and if he could junk the OEM exhaust system removed in Feb..
Told them to scrap the system and I would be in for an oil change Tuesday morn.also a fuel filter & another air filter.. There is a Chevy dealer down the road or a block away..Can't find any Zs with performance axle, no t-top, auto, leather, and speed-rated tires..Prefer white w/tan leather..have found two in Detroit; but are cloth interiors of ebony color..one's red and the other one is white..March 01 build--$1000 rebates..

Do you know what part it is that is failing? That's pretty wide exposure (Intrigue, Tahoe, Century, more?)

Don't know if it is the motor or the regulator. Would have to look for my paperwork.

I have read most of the messages on this rather active board. I really appreciate the input of many Intrigue owners. I own a '99 GL (build date: 7/99). I have enjoyed the car immensely and have had very few problems.

I have a request to members in the Chicago area. I will be passing through Chicago from Wisconsin on my way to Ohio on Wednesday, August 1 at about 1 PM. Which route do you think is preferable: a) I90 to I94 (using Kennedy Expwy to Chicago Skyway) to I80 - near Lake Michigan, or b) I90 to I290 to I294 to I80 - bypass along the western edge of Chicago? My guess is that b) is preferable ... but, I would appreciate input from any of you familiar with this area. I am seeking a route with good roads and minimal traffic.

Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions you may have.

It is topping 100 degrees in the KC area and my wife's Intrigue's A/C works fine when car is parked in garage and its temp. display shows the correct outside temp. HOWEVER, when the car is parked outside in the sun and heat, the temperature reading display will show only a few degrees and the A/C will not come on. I unplugged the temperature sensor that hangs down in front of the bottom of the radiator and plugged it back in and the A/C worked. My thinking is that the sensor's connection is bad or the sensor itself is bad, but I hate to start replacing things that must be purchased only from GM parts dept. Any thoughts about this situation?? TIA Mike S.
• ian18ian18 Member Posts: 133
I don't think either route will be a problem. Listen to WBBM AM780 for traffic reports. From my own experience, I294 (option b) works well at that time.

Hey all, picked up my black GLS Saturday morning and have already put 250 miles on it. The car had all of 4 miles and a build date of June 2001 when I first saw it. What a beauty!! The black with the chrome wheels and gold trim looks very sharp and the dark grey interior looks very nice as well. I don't know where to begin on how much I enjoy this car already. The Onstar system is neat too. I let the salesman talk me into the $200 upgrade which gives you the same services Cadillacs come with and on my to dinner Saturday night, I put them to the test. I called them and asked for directions(even though I knew where the place was) and the operator was very helpful. She had a hard time locating the exact location on her map so she calls the place and gets directions from a nearby landmark. Next I ask her to call and make me and my girlfriend reservations in a non-smoking section, so she calls the place again and makes the reservations and then confirms them with me. Needless to say, the girlfriend was impressed as was I. When walking out after dinner, I noticed there was a Lexus on one side of my car and a Cadillac on the other and my Intrigue fit right in. I've always thought the Intrigue was a classy looking car, but the gold trim and the chrome wheels really make the car. In fact, every time I look at my car I wonder why in the world the Intrigue wasn't a better seller. I mean heck, it could get by on looks alone, but it has the brains and the brawn to back it up. Anyway, I hope to report back soon.

Why is this the last race at MIS??Maybe I knew but forgot..Saw part of the race; last 40 laps or so and it was nail chewer..Seems to me Penske just sold the place in the last few years??

The Players team was one/two-Canadian win..

mike sp1::::::Use the manual a/c setting, for I assume it still cools the car. The Intrigue system gives one that option; the Caddy system is totally auto for cooling purposes..The blend air or auto in the V-6 powered car isn't my bag..

Congratulations on your black beauty! Black with chrome wheel and gold lettering is exactly what i had in mind. May be now i will reconsider the on-star. Enjoy...

9899olds - Actually the other Player's car was a lap down. Dario in the KOOL car was 2nd. Last race because the promoters can't seem to get their act together. Hopefully they will come back some day. Apparently the Detroit race is also on the rocks.

mosaix - Congrats on the 01 Intrigue. Sounds like a beautiful car. You are so right, the Intrigue does fit right in with higher end cars. Can't say that about a Camry.

mike_sp1 - I had my oil changed last week and I noticed afterwards my exterior temperature is not displaying correctly. It was about 90 degrees outside and it was reading 74. Then it would jump up to 96, and go back down again. It doesn't seem to affect the operation of the A/C though. I may try unplugging the sensor in the front and plugging it back in. Does anyone know if this is the only exterior temperature sensor?

Congratulations on your car! Looks like you got a brand new car that hasn't sat on a dealer's lot for a year.

Went by my ex olds dealer and he has no intrigues. He just got in a 2wd bravada in indigo blue. Great color! I understand this will be the color for the '02 intrigue.
Noticed that all the panel gaps were even on the bravada. Much improved over the earlier models.
My ex olds dealer has three aleros and six auroras. Looks like the aurora is no longer selling.

catch the "American Le Mans series" Grand Prix race from Sonoma, California yesterday????

dindak:::::The demise of Cart racing is based the lack of attendance for such events..The 2 mile track has seating for 136,000 and yesterdays race was est. at 40,000..

The Nascar race last month at MIS drew 170,000 fans.. Now who would think that could happen in this age of hi-tech where a bunch of people driving Fords, Chevys, Dodges, and Pontiacs could whip up greater interest over the debonair and slick Cart crowd..

my wife left for Sarasota at 6:55 am and they had to land in Orlando because of high wind and storms in Sarasota and Tampa..She had to fly Delta because NWest only goes to Sarasota during the seasonal-snowbird time..While I typing this message I was called by wife in Orlando and I called daughter who is sitting at the airport waiting.. They couldn't land at Tampa either..

In a AOL safety poll the Impala took top honors; built like a tank!!!!Was reading where the manatees now have more rights than boaters in Fla..They get hurt cause they love to hang around marina entrances on the intercoastal..no comment.. Hmm I own a Dreamcast and Intrigue and they were both canned.. I'm wondering now if the Raptors will follow the Grizzlies south of the border soon!

9899olds : Toronto CART even is always a sell out. Problem is CART has a lot of weak links in the schedule like Michigan and Nazareth. Nazareth was killed this year also. Michigan is one of the best races and should have been a keeper.

vcjumper : Dreamcast is awesome. 90% of PS2's power for less than 1/3 of the price. Sad to see it die. The games are great.

Dealers doesn't seem too eager to deal. Probably because they have no inventory. Will wait to see what the 02 has to offer.
• mosaixmosaix Member Posts: 106
When talking with my salesman after I got the car, his problem with finding me one was finding a deal. He knew I would not pay MSRP or simply take the discounts off MSRP and many dealers where he had located a car like what I wanted, did not want to trade with him unless he paid them the MSRP as they think they can hold onto the car and sell it for more that just invoice or what they had in the car. Also, GLSs are pretty rare this year as Olds felt they weren't selling very many in previous years and focused on building more GXs. Anyway, I'm happy that I was able to get one. BTW, I test drove an Aurora 3.5 while looking at the Intrigue and I didn't really see or feel much there to justify the extra $$$. Maybe an Aurora V8, but V6 model didn't feel that much different from the Intrigue. In other good news, I just got a $300 check from the IRS in the mail today!! Any sugestions for aftermarket modifications on the Intrigue? The car doesn't need anything major as it is already a looker, but I'm thinking of tinting the glass and would like to find some really nice custom floormats. To those others looking or hoping to find a 2001, I wish you good luck as you'll certainly like the car.
• vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
I had my Intrigue tinted last week, 35% all the way around with Solargard metallic film. Not only do I love the look but on those really hot and sunny days the air conditioner has to work a lot less now as heat coming from/being magnified by the glass is reduced. The tint shop did hate the large dot matrix at the top of the rear windshield though, major pain in the butt to tint those areas. It is also protecting the interior from UV-fade.
