Last week while up at the cottage I traded cars for an hour trip through twisty roads. I ended up with a 2K Jetta VR6 5-speed, fully loaded. While stationary, put a BMW emblem on the steering wheel instead of the VW, and I would have thought it was a 3 series (if I hadn't already spent time in the current 3). While driving, it is louder than a 3 (but quieter than the Intrigue), and doesn't quite handle like one. Speed wise it is about the same speed as an Intrigue but feels faster because of its weight and manual tranny. The materials and feel of switchgear (my personal favourites are the window controls) are excellent and I hope GM designers have spent a good amount of time studying it. It did remind me of why I like the Passat so much.

The Jetta owner liked my car too, especially the motor, but he prefers 5 speeds and the interior finish doesn't compare. For about the same price though, the Intrigue is a much larger car.

Hello, is there a 15k service? I got a letter from the dealer in the mail. Also can anyone give me the link to the TSB website. I believe my 2000 gls is having the steering shaft problem.
My side mirrors also have got that film on them and I remember someone else had that problem. Any fix?
Lastly, is anyone having problems with the foglights. This is the second time I'm going to replace the driver's side light.
Thanks and any comments would be greatly appreciated.

focus : What area do you live in?

vcjumper : It's frightening that a car as small as the Jetta costs as much as it does. It's a nice car, but it's not cheap.
  • focusfocus Member Posts: 225
Vcjumper: isn't there a law in Ontario which put a limit on how dark you can tint your car. Does the tint impair your visibility at night. I also find it troubling when you cannot make eye contact with other driver and pedestrian; otherwise I think it is great, especially on an intrigue, it makes it even more intrigue.
Dindak: I live right downtown - Toronto.
Thinking of debadging the intrigue, any comment.
  • hammen2hammen2 Member Posts: 1,284
johnpasinski, I live in Waukesha (Milwaukee) and have made the haul to Michigan (in-laws) dozens of times. At 1 p.m. on a Wednesday, I'd take the Skyway. Sure, it might cost you a few dollars in tolls, but it will shave a TON of time off of either 294 or 94 and should not be backed up (94/294 around Gary is ALWAYS a disaster area of trucks, accidents, and congestion - a real PITA).

    Sorry to be contrarian,

In Ontario, 35% is the limit on the front door windows, the other windows can be tinted as dark as you want. I went with 35% all around because I'm not a big fan of different shades of tint on a car, and with a neutral interior and sunroof it is still fairly bright. If I had a darker interior I probably would have considered 50% for the front windows. No problems backing up at all at night, it lets a lot of light through.

I'm not sure what I would debadge on the Intrigue, maybe the oldsmobile name on the back. I like the logo, and the large INTRIGUE lettering would leave a big empty spot.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
focus : Ok.. well I know Irvine Chevrolet had an ad in the Star yesterday with 21 Intrigues in stock. I'm sure they will deal. Why do you want to debadge the Intrigue?
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
I like the passat too and it was one of the cars i looked at before i bought the intrigue. Extremely well built and a good lookng car.

The reason i didn't buy it was a lack of rear headroom and the 2 year 24,000 mile warranty.
VW will be curing that problem with 4 year 50,000 mile warranty next year.

Sunday i was over at the VW dealership looking at Passats and noticed that the dealer had a protection package on every one of his cars.

It consisted of a hand wax job, touch up paint, fabric protector, yadda yadda yadda for $695.00!!
Personally i am offended by that. This VW dealer has such a cavalier attitude towards his customers at purchase. I can only imagine how he would treat me at service time.

It is hard for me to justify a smaller $29,000 Passat when i could be a intrigue or impala for 21-22K.

Nice car though, too bad you have to put up with so much attitude to buy one.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
The 2 or 3 people I have met who have new VWs have a serious attitude problem also, so I guess you have to have one to buy one.

15,000 mile service should consist of no more than oil/filter and air filter element; in-cabin filter also if your car has this (I think all 2000 models did). The TSB can be accessed through Edmunds "recalls" link. Side mirrors dulling is a common problem. My dealer said they would not fix; gave no reason. I just polished them; will eventually have to clear-coat them myself, I guess. Are yours black? I think the black cars actually have no paint on the mirrors; it's just black plastic and the finish oxidizes in the sun. There was a recall on the fog lamp switch; don't know if yours is affected but the dealer replaced mine while it was in for something else; didn't even have to tell them (a first!) about this one.
teo: Good link! Everyone read this and especially the part about proper lug tightening procedure. If you read between the lines, you can tell pretty plainly that there is a wide-spread problem with using improper procedure; i.e. impact wrench cranked up to 150 psi and spinning as fast as possible. I traded out wheels and tires on my 01 Formula last weekend (went back to 16-inchers) with a kid and his 98 TA and when I was removing his wheels I had to use a break-over bar on four or five of his lug nuts! Threads were galled, too. He said he had to have his rotors turned earlier this year. Hmmm, wonder why? I showed him the proper procedure, told him to go to Sears and buy a torque wrench. I have never (knock on wood) had to have the rotors turned on any vehicle and told him that if he does it right, he won't either. 'Nuff said.

Is it an intrigue or? I still remember the TV ad when it first came out (people walk around a black intrigue wondering who makes it). I would take out the olds name only, wasn't that the original intention (version) of the car?
  • focusfocus Member Posts: 225
Dindak: thanks. They only have the GX, i think GL has better value and look (with chrome and gold option). I was told the profit on that advertised GL was $1750, one dealer said they would take another 800 off. With the pcs package, you also get the spoiler which i don't like.
  • 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
See you got rid of the 17" wheels???? I am still struggling with the Z-28 deal; $21,394+tax will get me the White coupe-no t-top, auto, performance axle,RSA speed-rated tires, and preferred equip group.. MSRP $25,280..Dealer wants them gone; but the interior is the ebony cloth and I would like the tan leather and the chromed wheels.. decisions>decisions..

On top of that I ran across a 99 Caddy Concurs with 11k miles that can be picked off for about the same money; but my wife will not part with her Caddy..She is in Fla for a couple weeks, and i am babysitting the house and having repairs done to bring into code in case it is sold within the next 30 days, a decreasing sales business to run for another year or end of this year, and trying to buy something reasonable in Fla so as to get the 5 containers of furniture out of storage.. To top off this day I missed my tee time this AM so I am stuck in the house wanting on an electrician to give an estimate..Needs a permit..No home repair allowed..

The Intrigue is amazing; like a Timex watch, "takes the licking and keeps on ticking". Every thing has its day and timing is very important in life, so the Intrigue is literally a time bomb..

My black mirrors housing are also dull; no big deal for as you stated they were never painted so it's a no shiner.. The best thing about the black cars is the amount of road junk you do not see..I have had about 10 white cars and if they are on the open road for 3/4k miles a month the front ends are a mess.. The black car hides the bugs well and the plastic nose facia resists everything..I had to replace the windshield in the 98 Int before it was returned to maker; so far the 99 has avoided any contact..

I stopped at the local Pontiac dealer for the first time in a year, lots of Firebirds, all stickering around 31k--probably had 10 of them; mostly black and red exteriors..Too much dough for the 21k Z looks better; money wise for approx similiar performance..

    Have a profitable day...

tenn1975 - change the air filters yourself. The dealer will rape you on the parts and labor.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
focus : All the GX's have PCS though. That being said, I like the GL's best also. Should be able to get one though. I think you need to find a dealer that is more hungry for the business. Humberview in Etobicoke really worked hard for a friend of mine.
  • focusfocus Member Posts: 225
I have heard that neutral leather get dirty easily, worn out more obvious, etc. Any truth to that?
  • focusfocus Member Posts: 225
Emailed humberview couple months ago, no response. Just lock on their new web site and emailed the general sales manager. Will see what happen.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
The GM is quite nice there. I spoke with him a while back. The dealership is quite aggressive with price and I have seen them advertise GLs no more than a couple of weeks ago. Let me know what happens.

focus- If you are going to debage your Intrigue, please let me have the "T". Some how I have lost this letter, probably from a car wash and drying.
  • jkkinnova1jkkinnova1 Member Posts: 6
Where can one get a premium oil filter for the 3.5 engine? By premium, I mean like Mobil 1, or AC-Delco Ultra filter, etc. It appears that only run-of-the-mill filters are available for the car. I guess it's the curse of lack of volume?

BTW, does anyone have any experience with the AMSOIL foam air filters? Are they as good as claimed?
  • 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
Had the neutral leather in the 98 Intrigue GLS and after 26k miles the texture and color looked as new as it did 14 months prior..My 99 GLS has the pewter leather which after 47k miles is fine.

The seats are firm, modeled after the Europeans. The Caddy seats are soft..If your Intrigue is a long term deal then get the leather for it enhances the long term value and ages gracefully; whereas most of the cloth interiors are butt ugly!!
  • 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
Need the name of the drunk who creamed your 98 Intrigue for I have another demolition job for them..Your insurance settlement was in the area of 10k if I remember right..

Trade in on a 01 Z-28 which is discounted to 21,364 plus 6% sales tax was a whooping 10,000..
Due to the high mileage 47K, the Chevy dealer will take it to the auction block.. They can spin it for 12 tops; 11 easy..Car dealers are do not fit into a good day scene..

My solution is 12 trade-in and I cash in the Master guard policy for a pro-rated refund..There isn't much for movement on the Camaro for it is discounted 4,000 from MSRP..The GLS stickered for 27.2; so after 26k miles on the 98 GLS and 47k miles on the 99 GLS; my total investment in the two Intrigues is 24700..

The tires are thin and is a $425 no big deal for Pilots or SH 30s..Order a 02 Z-28 equipped as desired, sell the Intrigue myself and save a couple grand..

Trust you are giving the 01 Intrigue a roaring break-in; and not parking on the street until it gets around 80k miles!!!!!
  • white6white6 Member Posts: 588
Yeah, the Chevy is definitely the less expensive model of the f-body line-up with the standard (not SS) Z-28 being the best performance car bargain in the world. Pontiac dealers tend to stock only stripped 6-bangers and loaded TA's; not much in between. I was real lucky to find a stripped Formula; paid about what you would for the Z. Camaro cloth seats are MAJOR ugly... they look like $19.95 Walmart seat covers. Leather is much better looking and more comfortable, in my opinion. Local Chevy dealer had the Z-28 I would have bought were I to have gone the Chevy route... black with ebony leather, no t-tops. If I remember correctly, you're not far from SLP? Chrome take-offs are available from them for a reasonable price, if that would help. I also assume you are looking at a 2001... I haven't seen the interior of the 2002, but it might be worth a glance... 02's should be on the lot by now; they started building them in April! I am second-guessing my switch back to 16's... they look so tiny now! I think my problem was the cheap Korean tires! I knew I should've gone with the BFG's; always trust your first inclination. Good luck and keep us informed!
  • 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
The seating position and visibility of the F-body is not swift..One's butt is about 4" off the floor and the windshield rake is horrible..The ebony cloth is horrible; the dark color doesn't help create the illusion of a spacey interior..

    The Z is all mechanical!!!

Went through the Pontiac dealers website on Firebirds and the cheapest list price was 28+ with most over 30+..Went thru the six largest dealers in the Detroit area..

I had the Intrigue priced for trade-in and that phase was a joke..Will step back and ponder the 02 order..

Looks like the CAW/UAW is moving into Cambridge. There is a dispute over the results of the vote so the finality of it likely won't come until the end of the month. Full story is at autonews.com.

my thoughts are; yes lighter colors require a little more TLC in order to keep their original conditions [mostly on the driver seat]. All leathers need to have a good cleaner and conditioner maintenance done at least a couple of times a year [your mileage may vary].

I have own several light colored leathers in the past, my current ride is black [1st time for black] which I find does not look dirty like my lighter colors did. Plus black is very easy to touch-up or hide scuff marks that you might acquire. Also try getting a pen marks out of light leathers [it is a real PITA]. My 98 Intrigue neutral leather had a wear marks at the belt-line of the driver seat-back [dealer had to have a 3rd party patch done on it]. Another thing to consider is if you have or will have kids, you will have a lot more dirty/sticky fingers about etc. etc.

I like the looks of the lighter [interior] colors in the show room, but prefer the darker colors for my daily use. Just as I prefer a white [exterior] over black, again black looks good on the floor. White is Soooo much easier to care for, even over say silver. My next car may be white-exterior with ebony-interior.

I am also a big believer in that tinted window helps keep the entire interior from deteriorating too rapidly.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
Can't get you the punks that creamed my 98 unless you want to post bail :-) Word on the street is that after they caught them they were thrown into the slammer. But since they stole daddy's truck, maybe he got them out to inflict more carnage.

Insurance company gave me $11,500 less my $250 deductable for the 98. Remember, it had 80,000+ miles. If I had less, they would have given me a couple of thousand more.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
jgriff - I think my next car may be white too. I agree about the tinted windows. The interior of my two year old Intrigue still looks new since my windows are tinted (25% I think) and I use a shade in the front windshield when I park outside. I have not experienced the problem with the dash pulling away from the A/C vents like many others on this board. My feeling is that this issue is sunlight/heat related. I use Mequiar's leather cleaner/conditioner about three times a year on my nuetral leather. It still looks as good as new as well. Of course, I don't have any kids!

While getting off the winding off-ramp this morning I noticed something that I also experienced with my old Intrigue. Because the car handles so well, I sometimes take the off-ramps faster than posted. But I have so much control, the car doesn't even blink (or lean). Did those same manuvers in the rented Envoy and while better than most trucks I've driven, it made me appreciate just how well the Intrigue handles and that SUVs--no matter how well behaved--can't be driven like our Intrigues ;-)

That got me thinking. You've got to do some really, really, really sloppy driving for PCS to kick in in normal driving. I've read the auto mag comments saying things like the Intrigue took corners like a BMW. And while that is true, I really didn't believe it until I drove it. Not exactly a BMW, but real darn close considering the Intrigue is front wheel drive.

That being said, I still would like to have gotten PCS. Particularly for the bad weather in which the Intrigue shines, again with impecable control even in deep snow. But in such weather, even the best driver can roll over the unexpected which is the primary reason I wanted it. Of couse, the off-the-line acceleration from the 3.29 would have been welcome, too.

But all things considered, anyone who gets an Intrigue w/o PCS would probably never notice it. And if you do and the weather's not bad, you might want to check into some driving lessons :-)
  • teoteo Member Posts: 2,508
According to the 'Edmunds Editors' buying a new Intrigue without the PCS was downright dangerous....
  • 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
You got a beautiful deal and what a way to get out of high mileage cars..I've sold lots of cars three years old with 90+k miles and its not really a hard sell because the prospective buyer already knows what the price and mileage is, so the next move is to look at the car..

If they come out to see it, bingo, they will buy it; maybe got to drop the price few hundred $$$; but not a hard deal..

The worst cars to sell are the 4/5yr old Cadillacs for top dollar..I talking pristine condition with 60k miles or so, and all buyers want to do is talk and dicker..Lots of hot air..

New tires next week will tide me over until I get some motivation for spending money on cars again..I may be backsliding into one of my cheap moments....Being married, I have found that the best way to avoid spending money is to stay away from the temptation..

Tomorrow morning I am going to visit my Olds/Caddy dealer before golf for oil change while I talk with the GenMgr about everything but cars..they are 60 miles away and about 17 miles from the golf club..

Got to get to work and sell something.

DINDAK::::::Great news about Toyota Cambridge plant getting the CAW..I want the UAW to move on all the stateside foreign owned plants and start to level the playing field..By golly it makes my day for the pure nonsense of the union game will drive one up the wall..
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
Didn't I see you mention a very low mileage 99 Cad you were looking at for around 23K? Did you decide to drop that idea? Seemed like low 20s for that car might be a good deal.

I saw the car Monday night while treating myself to ice cream and it is a jewel..Do I need two Northstars in the garage???I have talked to the used car mgr over the phone; but stayed away from sales contact at the car..I will keep track of the car for I go by the dealer on way to golf..

I am avoiding temptation; cars are easy to buy; too easy..I only dicker when I am ready to become an owner..I make one offer when I am ready, if it doesn't fly--bye-bye. Always another deal waiting..
  • swagledswagled Member Posts: 195
I haven't driven a PCS car yet, but I get the same impression with the "low trac". You really need to be driving sloppy or needlessly leadfooted for it to come in. I've only noticed it happen when pulling out from a gravel driveway onto pavement, or when stopped at a light on a rainy night then immediately turning right on green.

I get the opposite impression of the antilock brakes, however. I feel like there's more grab left in the brakes, and the antilock kicks in a little early. Those of you that upgraded tires, did it have any effect on the sensitivity of the antilock ?
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
9899olds : Well the union certainly helps pull the Japanese firms down to equal footing. I am no union lover, but if some have them and some don't it certainly isn't fair competition.

One2one : I agree, PCS is really only good for winter or extremely wet conditions. Intrigue w/o PCS are otherwise fine. Having had extensive winter driving experience I can do with out.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
My ABS hardly ever kicks in. It's never done it on dry or wet pavement. But when the roads ice up it kicks in very frequently. My low trac light has come on before when I'm driving and hit a puddle. I think it activates because it is "full-function" traction control, to prevent hydroplaning. It's also kicked in a few times starting fast on wet roads or gravel. By the way, I don't have PCS.
  • swagledswagled Member Posts: 195
I may notice the antilock even in good weather because I drive in southern California. Traffic often quickly goes 70MPH down to 10MPH on sections of freeway.

People here follow too closely. You have "stacks" of cars in front of you that all hit their brakes at once. But the people behind me don't usually come to a screetching halt, (because I've left enough room before me to decelerate sanely, and therefore have more time to telegraph what I'm doing with the brake lights.) That's why sensing the antilock surprises me. I've driven other vehicles in these conditions, without it activating.
  • oscarz2oscarz2 Member Posts: 153
Haven't posted in a while and thought I'd drop in. Have 15k on my 99 now and it's at the dealer for an air filter change and wheel rotation. I'll change the inside filter later since it wasn't very dirty the last time I changed it.

I also asked them to examine the intermediate shaft since I'm noticing some faint clunking (at times) in the steering column when turning. Harlan said my VIN was immune from this problem but we shall see. The suspension racket still exists when turning and braking and I mentioned that as well. I also said the power steering struggles at low speeds. I fully expect a "cannot duplicate" response this afternoon so I expect nothing.

Short of a total failure or obvious malfunction, it's very difficult to get things fixed. They just tell you "everything is within specs". They just won't dig. Too many cars to work on.

At any rate, I've been thinking about buying another car. I have a love/hate relationship with my Intrigue, so one day I want to get rid of it, and the next I want to keep it for the long haul. I know I would take a big hit but sometimes it gets to the point where the financial loss would be less irritating.

I've been eyeing the new Le Sabre. Haven't driven one yet. I'm 33 and don't care if I'm too young for it. I like the way it looks and would like a softer ride. The wheels look silly though. If I could get Chrome, Park Avenue wheels on a 2001 dark red Le Sabre with taupe leather and dark tint, I'd drool.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
I found on my 98 Intrigue the ABS allowed the brakes to grab before kicking in. It usually did it at the appropriate time too. But with the '01, I find that it does come on sooner than necessary. I've felt it come on when it's bone dry and stopping from 40mph. Haven't decided if that's a good thing or not yet but there's nothing I can do about it either way.

oscarz2::: LeSabre was on my list as well. With the Grand Touring Suspension it's not the floatmobile of yore. Like the Intrigue, deep solid colors with tan interiors look really good. The interior looks modern too... in fact, the dash layout around the gauges is exactly the same as the Regal. The LeSabre was pretty low on my already short list primarily because of the column shifter. I've gotten so used to it being in the console that I don't like it any other way.

In the end, I think you'll be pleased with a LeSabre from a driving standpoint. That dark red is an excellent choice. I'm 32 and I think it looks pretty modern. But that Park Ave...

Disappointed you are not happy, Intrigue is a tough car to love..I love to push the car at speed at every chance for thats where it operates well..Having owned three new Buicks I consider them the worst case possible when it comes to suspensions and roadability..The Electra T-Type,RegalGS, and the plain LeSabre all are engineered with the same idea..Floaty is the word.. The Grand Touring suspension pkg is a word that sounds beefy and brawny instead it is whimpy..

teo::::::a non-PCS Intrigue is dangerous????The only reason I would get PCS is to have the 130 top end with the speed rated tires..You make it sound like a PCS equipped car is idiot proof!!
What sort of a PCS option does Impala offer???? A stronger cage or a 50mph bumper..
  • teoteo Member Posts: 2,508
Easy there fellow! Im just quoting the conclusion the 'Editors' at Edmunds arrived to when they tested a new 2000 Intrigue (Non-PCS) back in the year 2000...here is the link:

     http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/comparison/articles/43901/page003.html

And don't get me started on Edmunds' reviews made by their Mickey Mouse editors....

The Impala feels extremely secure even at speeds above 100MPH but the addition of PCS or a similar feature will be a welcome addition indeed....but GM might think that PCS is too rich for the blood of Chevy owners....:)

  • 9899olds9899olds Member Posts: 202
teo::::::show Edmunds a little respect for we test their patience every day with some of our thoughts, and frankly I loved their article on the long term test of the 98 Intrigue--the bronze bomb..it certainly made the case on my sweetheart 98 GLS of yore..The Automobile Mag test was a mirror image of my experience..also..

Keep the manatees, gators, and turtles happy; watch the cameras in the Tampa area if you are on anybodys hot list..Soon while driving through our nations capitol; you will be on camera at 35 different stoplights just in case you misread the signal..big brother is into mileage, tires now, and auto design soon..Remember-buy a golf cart while they are still cheap for it will be in vogue before long....Wonder if a V-8 would fit in one..

teo:::::before I forget, somebody said Reno was going to Cuba??? Is it just a rumor???

How about a Metro with a V8...at least you still get A/C and Radio.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
That's what's holding up the works with the RWD platform. GM claims it would put the cost of a Chevy out of the reach of typical Chevy shoppers.

So what they'll do is take off things like heated mirrors, remote fuel door and such to justify the cost. Oh, wait... they did that already to the Intrigue!
  • teoteo Member Posts: 2,508
My Impala LS has heated mirrors standard! But no remote gas door release.

According to the article, the move to RWD is not the reason why Chevy is holding upcoming platforms...is because, as they claim, the costs involved in adding gizmos such as StabilityTrak, PCS and the like that will indeed drove up the price.

But to me the line about 'Too expensive for Chevy buyers' is pure BS. If Chevy sells a RWD Impala with PCS I am sure a lot of people would not mind paying the extra premium for the goodies.

they limit themselves in their thinking bigtime, IMO.
  • lee18lee18 Member Posts: 45
It seems to me that when that comparo first came out it actually contained the word 'dangerous' and now it doesn't. Did the editors actually realize how incredibly ludicrous that remark was and remove it, or did GM threaten to sue them?

to be sure... that's why I went back to the 16-inch tires to make it less of a chore to drive every day. Just shove the right pedal... yeah, the compromises are worth it! 2002 Formulas only come one way... nearly loaded. Base price is over $26,000! But that includes keyless entry, all power (including seats) and t-tops (unfortunately). Only way to get a fixed-roof V-8 f-car is Z-28. And none of them allow graceful entry/exit. I got used to the driving position pretty quick; in comparison the Intrigue feels kind of like driving a van, so upright and roomy. The wife won't drive the Firebird, mostly for that reason. Works for me! (heehee)

I also noted the same exact thing. Warldlaw and his zealots went back, quietly, and edited the paragraph where the word 'Dangerous' was used.

That review warrants a full revision followed by a retraction for the garbage they posted on the Impala and Intrigue.

The 'Editor's' have gotten themselves in hot water recently with the bad review they gave the Chrysler Town and Country minivan.

In the May or June 2001 Letters to the Editors, you'll see an E-mail from one of the DCX executives...

I like Edmunds a lot but I do have an issue with Wardlaw's testing/writting style and his personal clowns.
