My Intrigue's knob has a tiny bit of play in it. Perhaps check out another Intrigue sitting at your dealer's lot to see if it has the same amount as your own. As for the 2002 mods, are you talking about the link posted in 4037?
  • arnie82arnie82 Member Posts: 27
No, the one refered to in 4041. BTW your tint job looks awesome. Put me over the edge to do it to my forest green 2000. I may go wth the sightly reflective bronze/green unless it looks too gaudy.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Thanks for the tint compliment, I'm really happy I had it done. Just make sure whatever you get is atleast partially metallic. Also you will notice dirt shows more on the windows, having a darker background.

This is the only kit I've seen for the Intrigue

Isn't there a screw on the front of the shifter. In my case, my middle finger falls right on it. No doubt that's the screw used to take the knob off. It feels kind of small, almost like you need electronics screwdrivers. Don't know what head it would be... never really looked.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
My dealer fixed my loose shift handle. I think they are like that on all Intrigues, but I wouldn't take no for an answer!
  • ketchketch Member Posts: 217
Mine too. its been slightly loose since new (2000 GL, bought Dec 99). Never bothered
me enought to have it looked at, but might next time, as it seems to been corrected
in several cases here. Only other problem has been two visits, once each to fix a
    rattle in both rear doors.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
The Intrigue is a real piece of work. Definitely the best car I've ever owned. In the 2 years and 26K miles I've only had the following warranty work done:

    Replaced intermediate steering shaft
    Battery died, replaced
Replaced crankshaft sensor because of engine hesitation / almost stalling
Fixed the migrating trim along the tops of the front doors (twice)
    Tightened the shifter handle
  • swagledswagled Member Posts: 195
That almost sounded sarcastic! ;-) But hey, you did get those problems fixed.

I'm at 15.5K on my 2000 GL now. No warranty work at all yet, (although I have the headlight-flicker alternator problem. I'm just keeping an eye on it for now.)
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
So far only a faulty temperature gauge has hit my 2000 GL after a year and a half. Not a major issue at all. The top of the shifter on mine could be tighter, but I wouldn't say it's loose either.
Had the flicker once when it was about 30 below zero in January. Never saw it again but I will monitor it again this winter. I hate going to the dealer so I will put it off unless it becomes a problem.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
Yes, I mean it is a great car. All of the problems I've experienced are problems that almost everyone else has had, except for the dead battery. But dead batteries and alternators with GM vehicles is pretty much expected. Much like a dead transmission with a Ford is inevitable. The steering shaft and crankshaft sensor are supplier quality issues, and I think the trim and loose shifter handle are design problems with pieces not fitting together the way they should.

    Hey folks -

I was here last Jan, but got a great close out deal on a new leftover 2000 max Se 5speed. So far we have had 1 problem, the engine 5 speed throttle mapping which was fixed with a computer program update.

My question on this board I've read a lot of posts but wondering if

    1. the alternator problem was finally addressed and fixed
    2. has anyone heard if the 3.5 will be in the Gran Prix or other GM car?
    3. any resolution to the front end issues, or do folks just lube the jounce bumpers and live with it?

Neither the Maxima or the Intrigue are perfect cars for us, but we enjoy the size and build quality of the Max. Yes, it could be prettier but it grows on you. I'd like to see GM put that 3.5 in some other cars. I could not belive they put that wheezing 3.4l in the new buick SUV. Gm is really struggling - no wonder they are thinking of getting 3.0 honda motors. A buick van thing woudl be nice with that 3.5 - I'd have to consider that to add to my ugly car collection (g).

Glad you like your Max. My wife will probably look at the new ones when they come out (next year?). I don't think she's too crazy about the interior or exterior styling of the 2002 Altima.
  • evandroevandro Member Posts: 1,108
The 3.5 DOHC V6 is a premium engine (read "expensive").

Unfortunately, this engine will be phased out in a couple of years when GM finishes developing the new series of 90° V6 engines. At least that's what I read somewhere...
  • evandroevandro Member Posts: 1,108
I was told by a dealer that the new Altima is scheduled to hit its floors in September.

I liked its styling in pictures, but liked most its 240HP 3.5 V6. I'll surely check it out then! ;^)
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Good to hear from you. Glad to hear the 5-speed hasn't given you any problems. My buddy opted for the automatic as he was scared off by the problems.

3.5L production ends in 2002. If you want the engine, buy an Intrigue soon.

GM is not thinking of buying 3.0s from Honda. Where did you hear that? Honda will be supplying an unspecified Saturn with engines in 2004, but I doubt it's the 3.0.
  • mosaixmosaix Member Posts: 106
Well, I'm already at 1500 miles on my less than one month old GLS. No problems at all. Shift knob seems very tight and does not wiggle like the one in an Alero I test drove did. I haven't noticed any headlight flickering at night so I guess my alternator is okay. So far, I only have a few complaints about this car and they are all minor. The main complaint I have is that the doors and windows seem to allow alot of road noise into the car. I think the doors could use more insulation in them as they sound hollow when you "thump" one on the outide. I've noticed the Aurora has a much more solid feeling door. And the window glass could be thicker(again like the Aurora's) to block out more road noice. Also, the A/C fan is noisy on it's highest settings and with the 90 degree weather we have been having, it stays in that range quit a bit. Lastly, there is no trunk ajar indicator. Nothing major, but a minor oversight especially considering all the other little features the Inrigue does have. Two other things that would be nice are a trip computer/driver info center and a delay out on the headlights. Obviously the complaint list is minor compared to the car's assets and I could go on all day about the wonderfully smooth and powerful engine, excellent braking and handling, responsive transmission, and the car's abundance of features.
  • mosaixmosaix Member Posts: 106
How far up does the temp gauge go in your Intrigues? I've noticed mine never even gets to the 1/2 mark even when sitting in traffic with the A/C on in 90+ degree weather. To me this is a good thing as I like for my engine to run cool, but I was just wondering if this is how the gauge is calibrated or if mine is actually running cooler than most. Most other cars I've owned will go up to the 1/2 mark and then go even higher when idling in traffic on hot days. Also, has anyone purchased or used a scan tool(i.e. GM Tech II or similar) on the Intrigue? From reading the service manual, such a device will interface with not only the PCM, but also the EBCM(brakes), BCM(body control module), IPC(instrument panel cluster), SIR unit, and the climate control module. I was particularly interested if the some of the BCM options could be changed.

    >>I liked its styling in pictures, but liked most its 240HP 3.5 V6

Oh, the shame of GM... The shortstar surely could have been tweaked up to 240. A higher compression ratio, and a little more valve lift might be all that was needed.

You have had good luck with rotors and both of my Intrigues had the rears replaced..I agree with your brake analysis and do you have any recommendations for the aftermarket offerings????

Maybe this could be some benefit to other owners..I drive fast but my brake useage is mininial and my driving habits are the same..

I began to realize that the tightening of lugs was the cause when I had new tires put on the 96 Caddy about 5k miles after a very expensive brake job in Fla.. Cadillac replaced the original chrome wheels; so at 48K I had the Michelins replaced; the Caddy dealer had the local tire shop mount the new tires and new wheels. I took the car in and all they did was install he new setup..Within a couple months I drove the car back to Fla and noticed the steering wheel wobble; way to early for that..The dealer is screwing up the rotors and they admit--no torquing tools..

The give-back every year is a ball, and one of my last contracts I got involved in was 5%/yr each of the 4 years, selling Canadian product priced in US $ with no exchange protection..Present time it is a money maker but it can flip/flop quick..

Any steel castings used in rotor material??? Carbon or alloy???

The auto business is becoming a brutal game, and I am baling out soon..It's not fun like the old days..

How has your Intrigue treated you????

Seems like Nissan is getting a little tangled up in their underwear on Horsepower ratings of their 4 cyl and 3.5 V-6..Testing data doesn't prove out the claims..Even the Q45 is under attack for nobody is is able to do the 5.9sec 0-60 bit..

Somebody on this forum bought a Maxima recently and was asking if us Intriguers were still a jolly bunch..I don't have any complains; but maybe tommorrow I will change my mind..Front end is still noisy--but at 49k of rough housing who cares!!!

My deal with Olds was I pay for the first one, and the second one is free!!! If you do it enough, one gets it right...

It's been a while since I last visited. I was pleasantly surprised to find over 500 new posts. The Intrigue community (and some of its regular detractors) is alive and well.

I've got 18,800 miles on my 2000 GLS with few complaints to register. I still get the rumbling sound from the driver's side wheel well area when turning, and the steering looseness problem hasn't been solved, but neither affects the over all performance of the car.

My biggest problem right now is that I don't know what I'll do to replace the Intrigue in a year and a half or so. I read in one of the car mags recently that Pontiac is dropping sedans in favor of more crossover vehicles. The pics I've seen of the next Regal aren't very inspiring. It looks like a Century. The CTS looks very promising but I don't know that I'll be able to afford the $35k to buy one. May have to wait for the next Maxima to come along.

In the meantime, I'll keep dropping by here from time to time to see what's up. Hope everyone is doing well.

    Nice hearing from you.

You face the same problem I will. GM has nothing similar to the Intrigue for me to come back to. My only hope is that the 2003 Grand Prix has a better interior than the current model. It's about the only GM midsize car I can afford and like. CTS would be great but I haven't got the money. Maybe in a few years I will though.
  • mosaixmosaix Member Posts: 106
I read that article about Pontiac dropping sedans in favor of crossovers and I guess they can drop me as a potential customer then. As for the new Regal, from the computer enhanced pictures I've seen, Buick is in real trouble if this is what the car will look like. Maybe Saturn or Chevrolet will get some of Olds' designs. It's like GM is going back to the old days when nothing under their high end cars was appealing. They were doing pretty well with the current Grand Prix/Intrigue/Regal and even the smaller Alero and Grand Am are pretty decent cars, but if what we are seeing now is a preview of whats to come, I just hope I'm in the financial position to afford a Cadillac or an SUV several years from now when I'm ready to replace the Intrigue.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Next generation Grand Prix and Grand Am are a done deal. I suspect everything else will go crossover. Vibe and the re-done Aztek are new for next year. I suspect the next generation Montana will be more crossover-ish in nature also.

As long as Pontiac makes a decent Grand Prix, they will keep me. A nice interior with quality build and I will be there with bells on. If they screw it up, I will be at a Nissan dealer.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
I'm not looking forward to the direction that Pontiac is taking for the future. It is the logical choice for a "cross-over" division. But the next question is, why is GM betting an entire division on cross-overs? Is there that much of a demand? Or do they feel that there will be that much of a demand or that they can create one? I dunno. But I may be interested Pontiac's future if the vehicles look more like the Vibe and the REV than the Aztek. Only time will tell.

And Buick.... I'll just say you'd better get a Regal now if you don't want to get stuck with that ugly mobile they plan on producing.

  • evandroevandro Member Posts: 1,108
I'm shopping for a car right now and feel helpless. It's been a while since I last saw so few enticing choices...

From GM, I got turned off by the unacceptable finish in the Grand Prix. The only Pontiac I'd consider would be the Bonneville.

I was eyeing an Intrigue, but after the only Olds dealer in town closed, I'm afraid it would be a risky choice.

I even checked out the Regal, but I quickly dismissed it.

If only Chevy had dropped the booze when they designed the Impala's tail lights...

In the meantime, I've considered a couple of cars whose brands had never made into my car buying list: the Accord and the new Altima.

With the fad of transvestite cars, I'm afraid that GM has just lost a customer. Am I alone? Sigh...
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
of whether GM will retain Olds despite the increased sales. Although I find it interesting that Olds counts for 30, 40 and even 50% of the sales for mulitiple brand dealerships.

Maybe I'll find a lonely stretch of road and drive my Intrigue into the sunset.... :-(
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Pontiac is suppose to be toning down the plastic in the coming years. I think the idea is to meld the current Pontiac with the current Oldsmobiles and come up with a compromise to make both camps happy. I hope they pull it off.

I like the current Grand Prix body, just don't like the interior much, especially after the Intrigue.

They added Bob Lutz and John Devine. That may be a good move, but is hardly a wholesale change in management. The same soap salesmen are still making lots of bad decisions. I hope they don't corkscrew the place into the ground before those guys can make some real changes happen.

I hear GM dealers are pretty upset with the company too, just as are their counterparts at Ford. In fact, did I not read that a group of Olds dealers are suing the company for the decision to pull the plug?

Given GM is one of the largest corporations in the world, would you not think it may take time to turn things around???? We aren't talking small potatoes here. The company has dozens of car lines in dozens of countries.

GM has already turned the corner with trucks, raising market share nicely this year with almost no incentives. Cars are a bigger problem of course, but all this signs are there that GM is really trying. New outside people (unheard of at GM before) and a slew of new models in the coming 3-4 years.

I know you are pesemistic, and there is certainly reason to be given GMs history. That said, things have never looked so good. It's a long process to achieve change. I think the piece are slowly coming together thanks to Mr. Wagnor.

    >I'm shopping for a car right now and feel helpless.
    >It's been a while since I last saw so few enticing
    >choices...

I agree. My wife and I are shopping for a replacement for her daily driver (a '96 Lumina LS). We didn't have much in the way of choices when we bought that 5 years ago, either (the Grand Prix, Regal, and Cutlass Supreme were all being replaced shortly, and neither of us wanted a 1st-year GM model. We buy GM because we've both had good luck with with them mechanically, and also because her mom works there, so we get the GMS or GMO discount). Combine that with the $2000-$2500 cash back, or 0.9-3.9% financing offers available now...

    >From GM, I got turned off by the unacceptable finish
    >in the Grand Prix. The only Pontiac I'd consider would
    >be the Bonneville.

Agree on the interior of the GP - did they get that plastic from model kits? I wonder if that'd hold together for 40k miles. The car is still on our list, but kind of the lesser of many evils...

We actually drove a Bonnevile SLE, and hated it. The interior was just wayyyy too "busy" - too many buttons, etc.

    >I was eyeing an Intrigue, but after the only Olds
    >dealer in town closed, I'm afraid it would be a risky
    >choice.

When I bought my (used) '98 Aurora back in March, I test-drove a base Intrigue and hated it. Last night we drove a black/graphite GLS w/Bose, and loved it. It's currently our favorite. My wife wants a white one, though, and there are few 2001 GLSes remaining in the Milwaukee/Chicago area.

We could order a 2002 and get the GMO pricing (as opposed to GLS), but there's only a $1k rebate on the 2002's (does anyone think that they won't up that to $2k like the 2001's, come October 1?)

Has anyone here purchased a GL or GLS at GMS or GMO pricing (which is typically $1000-$1500 under the dealer invoice)? Usually with that, you just get the price, with no negotiation, but, given the close-out/blow-out deals, does the dealer have room to move at all (I think, as part of the end of Olds, don't they get $1500-$3000 per car as a buyout)?

    >I even checked out the Regal, but I quickly dismissed
    >it.

I've had this as a rental, and it's "OK", but don't think my wife would like it. Still, we're going to drive one soon...

    >If only Chevy had dropped the booze when they
    >designed the Impala's tail lights...

No doubt! The Impala is so ugly it makes our Lumina's look like a Corvette (sorry Teo)! My wife and I have both ruled it out on looks alone. OTOH, she still wants to test-drive a Monte Carlo...

    >With the fad of transvestite cars, I'm afraid that GM >has just lost a customer. Am I alone? Sigh...

I think more and more people love their trucks, vans, and crossovers. GM sees this as the "new thing", but they're ignoring those people who still like to drive a car (I have yet to drive an SUV that I would feel comfortable cornering, or doing emergency maneuvering in like I can with my Aurora).

I sure hope Bob Lutz can wake 'em up before it's too late. Ford is battered from the Firestone issue, while DC is still messed up from the merger....

I was getting more "stuff" for the car at Pep Boys and couldn't decide whether to get the leather cleaner, conditioner, both, or the all-in-one deal. I'm not a fan of the latter in anything (combo TV/VCR, seudo stereo rack units, etc). They tend to be cheap.

After reading the labels, I couldn't tell if I should use the conditioner or cleaner. Is the cleaner for dirty seats while the conditioner is to keep them from cracking and getting dirty?

    Help!

Oh, yeah. I passed on the Zaino. I'm a Meguiar's man now. Tonight I'm going to hit it with a coat of "Gold Class". I like their tag line: "Sunset by God, reflection by Meguiar." We'll, see.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Incentives on the 2002s are hard to predict. Since production will likely end earlier that usual it questionable how many cars will be made. I suspect they may go higher, but if you find a 2001 you like, I would just buy it.
  • evandroevandro Member Posts: 1,108
I really liked the Bonneville, both inside and out. Comparing its finish with Grand Prix's is hard to imagine that they bear the same badge on the front grille... I agree that the dashboard is a bit busy, but it pleases a geek like me.

The 3.8 was very competent, as usual, but the 3.5 would be much nicer. I know that there's a supercharged version, but it's beyond my budget.

The only problem is finding one here in Texas' truck land... :^)
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
Before you cut Bonneville from your list of potentials - take a look at the SE model. I have a 2000 and love it. The upperclassmen SLE and SSEi have a lot more buttoms and toys as well as body cladding. SE has more basic functionality as well as cleaner styling IMO.

    Check it out

"No doubt! The Impala is so ugly it makes our Lumina's look like a Corvette (sorry Teo)! My wife and I have both ruled it out on looks alone. OTOH, she still wants to test-drive a Monte Carlo..."

Taste is highly subjective. I like the Impala due to its 'Love it or hate it' nature and looks. At least I won't see 10 of them lined up in the next intersection!

Don't rule the Impala out just on looks. I highly suggest for you and your wife to take out an Impala LS for a spin...you might be delightfully surprised! The LS has the 3800 V6 engine, sport suspension, alloys, 4-wheel disc ABS and all speeds traction control standard. The quality of the interior is much better than the one found in the Grand Prix. I really like the GP but the interior quality is a big turn off...a shame for it is a very nice looking car.

The Montecarlo is the same exact car as the Impala. You might like its looks and dashboard design better than the Impala, but both have the same exact underpinnings and are built along side the same plant in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (Where your Lumina was made by the way). The Monte is the 2 door version of the Impala. I like the SS version, however, make sure that you can live with the shortcomings of two door cars and the rather long and heavy doors (Tight parking spots).

The Intrigue is a nice looking car but I can't stomach the Saturn inspired front end.

Have you checked the safety ratings for these W body cars?

The Impala comes at the top. 5 star front end rating and 4/5 stars side rating (Without/with side airbag). Also the Impala is the only W Body sedan that already meets 2003 government safety standards. The 'older' W body cars (Regal, GP, Intrigue) only meet 1997 safety standards, hence, the lower safety scores.

The Intrigue has the worst side crash rating of the W body family....only 2 stars something to consider if you care about safety.

The Regal and GP are a bit better but not significantly...3 to 4 stars.

It is up to you. For some safety is not important or a moot point. For others it plays a significant part in the decision making for purchasing a new car....

The Bonneville is a fantastic car in SE trim. It is extremely safe too. Don't write it off just yet until you give it a second look.

dindak - That was an interesting article on the SUV vs. hybrid lux crossovers. I was pricing a 2WD Bravada with convenience package, heated seats, and BOSE. With the loyalty certificate and my GMO discount I figure I could get the truck for about $27,300. It would probably be hard to find one of those hybrid lux crossovers in that range. But MSRP on that Bravada is around $33,340, so I can see where some people might decide to spend a little extra and go with a car (or minivan) based SUV like RX300 or MDX.

Ya... they have a softer car-like ride which is attractive to people in urban area since they will never go off road anyway. Rendezvous is one of the few offered by GM and it's relatively inexpensive .

After my son's rotor problems, I bought a torque wrench. After a brake job or tire rotation, I loosen the nuts and tighten to the factory specs. I can usually tell the nuts are torqued unevenly when I loosen them.

Don't know a thing about aftermarket rotors. We do recommend OEM linings when those need replacing. No telling what formulation is in an aftermarket pad and the lining is one of the most sensitive parts of a brake system.

I bought my Intrigue in April. It was a 2000 GX with 22K miles and had been a Avis rental in Texas. I love it but thank goodness for the factory warranty because I had to have the trans rebuilt. The OD clutch burned out. The only way I knew is that the revs were way too high at 70 mph. I saw this problem in the TSB list that someone had a link to recently. They replaced the intermediate steering shaft at the same time. I had noticed it click loudly just once so I don't know if the mechanic heard it or if it's a known problem.

I agree with you on the auto business. Bosch will never quit but we have suppliers pulling out all the time. The latest was Acushnet who supplies us with a lot of seals. I guess there's a lot more money and fewer headaches with golf balls. No chance of a recall there.

Did the black on dark grey GLS have the PCS package? Sounds like my car. Mine also has the gold badging and it really makes the car sharp! I find myself looking out the window at my car when its parked in the driveway. The GLS is a totally different baby from the base models and especially a base model of a 98. I drove an Aurora 3.5 while shopping cars and really didn't see alot to justify the extra $$ over the Intrigue GLS. I'm sort of in the same boat as some of you on future cars. My hopes are GM will inject some of Olds into Chevrolet, Saturn, and/or Buick. Otherwise, I hope I can afford a new Envoy or Trailblazer or a Cadillac then. Every time I look at my new car I wonder why in the world those cars didn't sell twice as well as they did. The look is sharp, the size is just right, the feature content is very good, and the transaction price is very good. I think maybe Olds should have just priced the car down about $2000 to begin with and not fool with the rebates. And we haven't even mentioned the car's performance and driving characteristics. Anyway, good luck with your car shopping.
