Henry- Sometimes I feel like an outsider. There aren't many new aurora owners in here, so I have no one to converse with.

Also, you are comparing the V8 aurora's right? Not the V6 to the old V8?~ A.R.

There seems to be about ten posts missing after 685. I know we answered Matrix's questions.

arcoates - Also fdion, hardesty and dcchristopher are 2K1 owners. If we do get involved in the Owner's Club here at Edmunds it would be easier to sort out who owns what. Never bothers me though when people call the Classic a um... 'Russian cruise missle gone wrong'... hehe

daeven - Hope you have a warranty. If not, get one. Just replaced my trans for $3,000 (all covered by warranty). Got mine at 100k miles at WarrantybyNet, so I'm sure you can get one if you don't already have one.

Folks, Town Hall had a severe problem last night, and posts made after sometime yesterday morning disappeared in the process of getting TH up and running again. The technical folks have been working all night - and are still working - trying to get them back.

I understand some have already been restored, and more may be coming, but there are no promises at this point. The best place to keep up with this problem is in the Talk to the Hosts discussion on the News & Views Board.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for this situation and trust that every effort is being made to rectify the problem. Thank you for your patience.

Missing Posts - I thought I responded to Matrix.

    ZINC - 5 1/2 hours round trip? Car need a tune-up?

Arcoates - There are more than a few 2K1 folks here. However, in general, the numbers work against you. There are 5 years of Classics and only two years of 2K1's (remember it was introduced in 2000). However, there is hope, as the Classics die out . . . . .

Remember, we are all part of the great circle of life. One day Simba, the Classic will be gone and it will be your turn to be King.

DO we have a new host for this board? I have seen more posts from the host recently than I have seen over the past 3 years.

Hey Pat, thinking of becoming an Aurorian??

I just purchased my first Aurora, a '99 from my local Lexus dealer. It was traded by the original owner on a new Lexus. It is well equipped with the following options: moonroof, Bose stereo, chrome wheels, heated seats and gold package. The original owner told me it stickered for over $40,000 new! I paid $15,900. The car does have high miles (45,000) but it is still under factory warranty. I am delighted with the car! I like it much better than the '97 SHO I traded in. While it isn't as quick as the SHO, its ride is superb! It is very quiet and well mannered. The only thing I don't like is the wheels. Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket wheels? What about the new 2001 17" wheels? Will they fit a '99 model properly? Thanks for the info!

Is this the first A/C problem you have had? It could be several things. At that kind of mileage, the compressor may be shot. Many cars need an A/C compressor after 100K or so, especially if you run the A/C alot. Also, there may be a leak. About 2 years ago, the A/C on my father's 95 quit working. The compressor would short cycle and it wouldn't cool any. It turned out the evaporator coil was leaking and had to be replaced. He had an extended warranty so it didn't cost him, but it was a timely repair. According to the service tech, the entire dash had to be removed. What kind of funky things is your transmission doing?

kobramax, congratulations on the purchase and the excellent deal. Again, seeing these prices on 98 and 99 Auroras is seriously making me consider going that route when the lease on my Intrigue is up. If gas prices would just go back down:) Sounds like your Aurora is loaded with pretty much every option and yes it probably stickered for 40K although I'd say the previous owner got it for less as they were discounting them big time in 99. Then again, it he's looney enough to trade an Aurora in on a dull Lexus(and pay full MSRP there no doubt) he may have really paid 40K for the car. His loss, your gain. Enjoy the car!

THE HARD STARTING AFTER RUNNING FOR AT LEAST 20 MINUTES , AND SOME TIMES STALLING AT STOP LIGHTS IS YOUR FUEL REGULATOR; HAVE THAT REPLACED BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, IT WILL COST YOU ABOUT 230.00 TO 300.00 TO HAVE THIS REPLACED, OR I GUESS YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF IT TAKES ABOUT 15 MINUTES TO REPLACE AT A SHOP.

L8_Apex and I are now co-hosting this board (as of the first of February, if I remember correctly). Sedans is by far the busiest board in Town Hall, and I'm happy to be able to give L8_Apex a much needed hand - he's had to manage an awful lot by himself around here for a number of years.

I bought a 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora about 6 weeks ago at a Hertz dealer. The dealer said some guy just traded it in 5 minutes before and it was the best deal on the lot. The car interior looked immaculate. The car has 77,000 miles on it. Now, having driven it less than 1,000 miles, it started to jerk when I put it in reverse or in gear. My mechanic tells me that two of the four engine mounts are completely broken, the other two are severely stressed and need to be replaced, and the CV Joint has also been damaged. I do have a warranty, but if it has been abused this badly, shouldn't I try to get Hertz to take it back, even if it was AS IS? I don't want to pay for a car for 5 years that may be in the shop constantly.
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
Since the car was sold as is you may be SOL.

However, I would try to return the car.

I have never heard of the engine mounts going on a 95. I have a 95. If hard accelerations were enough to make the mounts/CV joint go on an Aurora, nearly every person on this board would have lost an engine by now.

We don't call hard acceleration "ZINCING" the car for nothing.

Pat - welcome to our little board. Consider yourself an Honorary Aurorian.

Kobramx - the 2k1 wheels will fit the Classic. You will lose a bit of sidewall when you upgrade. I was going to do this along with going to Z rated tires. I did not do it cause I thought the ride would be too hard and the cost of the wheels from the dealer was reDICulious.

    Greetings One And All...

Geez... I go away for the weekend and I am being compared to pond scum... Geez... One gentleman in a new Aurora wanting to see just how quick his new toy is and I am the "Heavy"... As for "getting over it", I now own the car of my dreams getting over it will take quite some time... Never in my post did I say the New Aurora was a piece of crap... I would not say that even if it were true... And it isn't...

What I will get over is this line of posting... New or old we need not argue the same motor, the same transmission, just about the same everything except weight and body style...

Last time I go away for the weekend... Grrr... Grumble Grumble...

Remember how I thought it was my spark plug wires that were bad? Well I tired that Chevron Techron stuff that someone reccomended me and I notcied a big difference. It doesnt idle rough anymore and it starting to run better. This leads me to believe it is something with my fuel system. Any ideas? Clogged fuel filter? dirty injectors?? has anyone else experienced this?
  • matrixfrogmatrixfrog Member Posts: 180
Ok, please give me advise on this:

Ive heard from people I've talked to (in person and on this board) that I'm supposed to be able to smoke my tires all the way through an intersection but I can only make a little chirp when I try. The traction control is off. The person who owned my car before me was an older lady who did not drive very fast. If I disconnect the battery under the seat so the computers get reset and drive it like a bat out of hell will I be able to peel out now or what? Is there a reason for me not to disconnect it? Im tired of having a slow aurora.
  • zinc1zinc1 Member Posts: 133
So... I guess the 'titles' are still out hunting Easter eggs?

Matrix - I've never peeled out in my car and I've floored it enough to know if it was possible. I don't think it's common for a stock Aurora.

    Engine sound on the 2K1:
Henry, I wasn't saying the sound level was high. I think it's loud enough. I meant the tone. Very nice tone. The Intrigue is a lot louder and has a nice tone too (an Alfa 164 owner I know tought the engine sound in the Intrigue tv spot was faked - having driven one for about 3000 miles I know it wasn't), and so does the aurora series 1 (I drove a 99).

I wasn't comparing the v6 or v8 olds/caddy engines with themselves. Just comparing with less sophisticated powerplants and their lack of musicality (if there is such a term) at the engine level (up front vs exhaust).

    Ciao,
    Francois

PS. Just came back over the weekend from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Saw a silver 01 aurora southbound on 52 while on my way there, northbound. Didn't see too many cars on the parkway itself, mostly motorcycles. I did see a 01 aurora, again silver.

    Broken engine mounts:

In 1999, they added another engine mount due to some failures on earlier models. I dont have all the details, but Zinc has the 95-99 microfiches so he could probably check on that (I have the 01 microfiches).

    Matrixfrog and hard starts:
There is a good chance it is the fuel pressure regulator as someone else mentionned. I'd try to track down an adjustable rising rate fuel pressure regulator for your application, instead of swapping for a stock unit. Gives you more flexibility once you go for performance upgrades, and absolutely required when adding a turbo. IMHO, a turbo is too complicated on this engine, as you would more than likely replace the pistons to go to 8:1. Also, not much space to put one.

Thanks for the help guys. Im taking the aurora in this week.

Zinc: glad to finally here someone say my car is normal :o) I've heard people say that even with brand new tires I should be able to peel out all the way through an intersection. Must be they had some kinda mods or something I dunno.

Does anyone here have a flip down tv in their aurora? I was thinking about saving up for one and hooking up my playstation too it but I wasn't sure which ones would fit and still look nice.

FYI I read that all the power button does is shifts performance style.

Check out this product: www.fusevsl.com They are lights that you screw on to your valve cap and when you drive at night it looks like your driving on circles of light. Pretty cool.

BTW I think the titles vanished with the easter bunny.

ENGINE MOUNTS - This is the first I heard of this problem. The saleman told me the extra mount was to lessen the engine's kick when you Zinc the car. Oh Well.

PEELING THE TIRES - When I put the chip in my 1995, this became a problem for me at first because I was not used to the extra get-up-and-go once the car "learned" my driving style. I have since learned not to give it as much gas from a dead stop. However, as Zinc said, the peeling out came AFTER I chipped the car. ((BY the way, given the cost of performance tires, peeling out is not a good idea.))

MORDECAI24 - Remember pond scum is an important component to the eco-system of the pond. (smile)

HOMEWODD_MAN - Nice site from what I saw of it. You might consider posting information about the GM get together at the Rockaway Mall in New Jersey on April 22nd at 12:00pm at the J.C. Penny parking lot. The event started as a Bonnevelle event that was expanded to include other makes. Check out the Bonne Board on edmunds for more info.

    Aurora Event,

Anybody know of anything happening for Aurora's down here it the south. The bayou seems a little lonely, the gators just don't appreciate my car.

I heard that zincster has the 95-99 fiche. I just bought a set as well. I plan on converting them to PDFs when I have some free time.....

Henry- I didnt know you had a chip in your aurora. How much did that run you? Im trying to find the best HP per buck (besides turbo and NOS). What are all the mods you have done to your car? Any pics?

I am also interested in an aurora meet. Any around the Michigan area?
  • redskin024redskin024 Member Posts: 110
matrixfrog>>>>>> i am your age also and my dad had 2 different aurora's. I used to floor it a lot and stuff like that and never was i able to peel out across an intersection or even come close. like you said, though, i have chirped them plenty of times. maybe the people who told you you could do that put armor all or oil on the tires....
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
I C the titles are still with the easter bunny. It seems that the titles "are late, are late, for a very important date."

Matrixfrog - Hey Neo! - the 95 Classic is the ONLY 'ROARA that can be chipped. For every other year you need the Jet Chip that Zinc posted to this board a couple of postings back. None of the modifications I have done to my car are visual. I am trying very hard to keep it LOOKING (but not acting) STOCK. Therefore the mods have been to the suspension and I am thinking of new speakers and Borla exhaust. The only visual mod I would consider are the 2001 wheels. There is a 95 Classic going up for auction at a sheriff's sale. I plan on attending, just to see how much it goes for. the car looks exactly like mine from the picture I saw of it.

Hmm, Henry- the owner of twin Aurori???????
The auction car would give me a car to really play with -- modified suspension, lowering the car, exhaust, neon lights, chrome wheels, rear spoiler, ceramic dash board. Maybe even a convertible top.

dslay2 and fdion, thanks for info on Fuel Regualtor.

On recent trip, my copilot pointed out that the temp control knob wasn't changing the air temp coming out the pax side vents (A/C off). Knob turns OK, but warm air only comes out. Anybody checked your's out ? Not something a driver would normally be aware of.
  • daevendaeven Member Posts: 28
On my '95, there is a button on the climate control computer on the dash that enables/disables the passenger temperature control. Hey, you've got to check the simple stuff first!
  • matrixfrogmatrixfrog Member Posts: 180
Engine Mounts - The engine mounts prevoius to 98 were not prone to failure, they just added an extra for a better ride.

Henry, Im glad to see someone making a perfomance aurora. Qeuestion is the chip your talking about for the 95 a superchip? What is the difference between the one you have in your 95 and a jet chip? I supect just different HP gain? Does anyone know a good place to by performace parts?

  • fdionfdion Member Posts: 59
The 95 had a straight eprom. You can buy a chip that will swap straight for the stock eprom. Or if you are seriously modifying the car, you'll probably want to burn your own programs. A $99 eprom burner/reader and a PC or even better an eprom simulator and a laptop, and the proper software and then it's dyno time (or use a g-tech for ballpark figures).

The 96-99 (and the 01, altough the engine, weight and programs are different enough to mandate a different programming) use an eeprom. What the aftermarket came out with is a module that overrides the stock program (connects to the bus connector of the ECM). One of those is jetchip (jetchip.com). These are typically WOT only solutions (ie, you get the additional 10-15hp only when flooring it).

There is an adapter for the throttle "switch" that is available to adjust the WOT position while keeping the rest (idle and partial) properly calibrated. This would give you the additional gain under less than WOT.

If you get a better flowing exhaust and intake, you will need to upgrade the program. Jetchip has a stage I (stock) and stage II (modified exhaust/160 thermostat and lower temp fan switch). This is not a bad approach. The best by far is to dyno the car and choose the best performing program. I've been in contact with RSM ( http://webhome.idirect.com/~rsm1/ ) and they seem to know how to really tweak the aurora. They are near Toronto, so if I go to Montreal this summer, I'll probably do a little diversion there.

start with fuel regulator, I had same problem my Classic would stall at stop lights, generally after giving it gas , and taking my foot off excelorater it would stall
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
Well, I was just at the dealership today to tell my mechanic about the meet at the Rockaway mall. He was interested in coming and bringing his 95 Classic. For those that can make it, a chance to talk to Jerry would be worth the trip.

TRAILS - Jerry had the same hard starting problem with his car and did something to the fuel system to fix it (don't ask me what he did).

Jerry happened to mention that he had a problem with his climate control knob for the passenger side. He said that the knob component needed to be replaced because each click on the knob is suspose to represent a different reading to the computer. In his case two of the postitions were sending the same reading to the computer and was the cause of the problem. I don't know if this is your situation. With me, it was that the driver's side was not getting any heat. In my case, there was a motor that changed the vent positions that needed to be replaced. I hope this helps.

STALLING - My 95 did the same thing. However, Jerry fixed it awhile ago, and I do not remember what he did. I did post what the fiax was at thte time it happened. If you want to scroll back through the forum and possibly Aurora 2, it will be there.

My Aurora is a stock, non- autobahn 98 with new michelin H rated pilots. The car has 23,000 miles on it, and as far as I know has never been modified (it was a lease car). 3-4 weeks ago when my wife was out of the country, I had the car out on a Saturday morning with my 11 year old daughter. We were heading home and came to an intersection (4 lanes wide). While waiting on the light I disengaged the traction control and waited. When light turned green, I zinced the throttle. The tires squealed until I backed off the throttle approximately 2/3-3/4 through the intersection. I'm sure I could have gotten another 20-30 feet from that burnout. Perhaps it was perfect conditions that morning, or just a fluke, I have not tried this again as tires are not cheap, and I'll be awhile recovering from paying Uncle Sam.

BTW-Just checked oil the other day. 2700 miles since oil change, and its still full.
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
My Classic developed an oil leak from the oil level sensor. It is going to be repaired by you know who.

Before the CM meet at the Rockaway Mall, I will be going to a Porsche Club meet at the NJ Meadowlands. I don't have a Porshe, but they set up a track in the parking lot. I am debating whether I will take the Classic through the track.

It is no sport car when it comes to handling. What do you guys think? Classic vs, Porsche.

It is times like this that I wish I had the 2K1. The "kids" have a car that is more nimble than the Classic.

However, all in all, I will take my Russian Cruse Missal over the Olds Tauras.

It's great to hear your mechanic is going to stop by - sounds like 3 Auroras there - all Classics. The weather looks decent for Sunday - I hope that there is a nice turn out - really don't know who else is coming except you 3 and 4 of us Bonneville owners. Whatever it turns out to be will be very nice - I'm looking forward to meeting you and Mordecai and any other Edmunds posters who drop by.

    Have a great day

Have you done any mods that are gonna greatly improve your handling? If not Then why bother unless you want to see what your aroara can really do. (not that much) But why not? You'll probably have some fun. I wish I still had my lil dodge avenger. They arnt incredibly fast but they are nimble around corners. Theres a stretch of road about 20 miles north of where I live that is extremely curvey and hilly. I took my aurora around those corners and stayed pretty well planted on all fours but I could tell that if I didnt have brand new tires they would of broke loose with some of the g-force I was putting on them. These cars wernt made for it but it is sure as hell fun trying to get them around that sharp curve as fast as you can. Just my thoughts.
