Can someone who has actually had the problem describe to me the symptoms that you were having. Did replacing the ISS correct the problem? Do they have to rip the car apart to replace it? Is it done in the inside or outside of the auto?
I'm asking because I have an early 2000 LS that is starting to act strangely. On turns, sometimes I "feel" something traveling up into the wheel.
Enjoy!

What i would like to see is a ducktail spoiler like the one that was on the Impala SS.
Sometimes less is more.
Without the spoiler the rear of the car looks awful to me.
The first dealer I took it too replaced the Front Struts which did no good as I suspected it wouldnt after reading other posts in this forum.
I took it to another dealer and they replaced the ISS and no more problem! The clunking surfaced on my car at about 22000. I have driven about 2000 miles since the fix and no further clunking!!
Take this post to the dealer with you and maybe they will take a more serious look at the Intermediate Steering Shaft before they replace the struts. The Struts were a waste of time.
Good Luck!! Kerry
However, it did make it that much more difficult to see the hydrant I backed into. But, at least I was sporty when I did it. ;-)
Any problem with the engine cradle on 2001 model ?
Any problem with idiot light ie:service eng soon, air bag etc that cannot be fixed and found on lot of Impala ?
I looked at rear of the Impala 2002 wow,if that look good like that live I'll go with it,thats the only thing keeping me away from it.
00impala,thanks for your help !!!
Thanks
But, seriously, I personally like the single display, as opposed to having many "idiot" lights. Everything is in one place. It has let me know when the traction control has engaged and when I'm low on fuel. (The D.I.C. will also give a low fuel warning.)
Fortunately, I haven't had any other warnings.
Two excellent sources of information relating to Impala service issues are Nathan's Impala web site:
http://home.hawaii.rr.com/impala/
and the "Chevrolet Impala Owners: Repair & Service Issues" Forum here in Edmunds Town Hall.
Thanks
It has the Bucket Cloth interior with the Floor Shifter and the 3.4 and bolt on Hubcaps. Like Shamino's.
At least the Hubcaps are Still Silver, the ones on my new 2001 are "Greenish" and they ordered a NEW set of 4 from the Factory that they will replace next week, Strange thing is 4 other Impalas on the lot had the same problem so they ordered me a Fresh Set. Don
Going through all those messages might sound a little crazy to some of you but I think the time spent was worth it. It was enjoyable to go back and listening to the talk from the beginning before the 2000 Impala was even available, through the time period where some of you had four month waits for factory orders and experiencing the joy of you all receiving your new Impalas. Getting to see some of you in the 2001 brochure was delightful, and I can't pass up looking at the pictures some of you have put on the web showing off your car.
No, I didn't read every single message, but I read those that were of interest to me, which were most of them. I did come across one performance boost that was if I skipped 75% of Teo's messages, it increased my MPH (messages read per hour) by 50%! Nah, just kidding Teo.
Okay, a little about my Impala. I ended up buying my Navy Blue 2001 LS on 6/15/01, with a build date of 5/01. I had been considering factory ordering mine because I didn't really think $700 for a hole in the roof was necessary and it was next to impossible to find a navy blue without one and still have everything else. I ended up buying one fully loaded including the sunroof anyway at $200 under invoice, with no advertising fees, and $1250 in rebates. MSRP was 26454, I believe invoice was 24195, and I ended at 22745. I'm sure it's not the best deal anyone has ever received on an LS, but I had been shopping around for a couple of months all over eastern Iowa and this was the only dealer I found willing to go under invoice and not sock me with an advertising fee and had what I want, without even having to haggle as they are a bottom line pricing dealer. I spent less time with this dealer going through the whole process of buying a car than I did with others just trying to get their low selling price out of them, so that meant a lot to me. I'm sure it was the best deal I could get out of this area at the time I wanted to purchase, and it was nice not to have to go through the pressure and stress of negotiating and wondering if I was ripped off when I drove the car away.
Now I have about 1850 miles on it, not a single problem yet, and no regrets buying it. (Well, maybe a little regret now that the 2002's are out, but at the time I just couldn't wait that long.
Going through all the messages has also given me several ideas that I might like to try out when I get ambitious. I must say that the website that Nathan (night_owl1) put together is an awesome resource. Thank you Nathan and all who helped contribute information to that site.
The project I would be most interested in completing right now is to get my aftermarket stereo integrated into my Impala LS without having to swap out or relocate the factory stereo or disrupting the current setup, including OnStar. Why would I want to go to the trouble? Well, imagine having your whole music collection available to you anytime in your car or elsewhere without having to mess with CDs: http://www.riohome.com/products/riocar.htm
It is in my opinion, absolutely the best music product available at this time. I have had mine since last Thanksgiving and love it. It's removable so when you leave the car you can take your music with you. (Also prevents you from having to worry about theft.) When I had my previous car, I could listen to whatever I wanted on my way to work, take it in with me to work and hook it up to my PC, listen on the way home, and hook it up to my home stereo if I wanted to when I got home, without missing a beat.
No, I do not have any affiliation with the firm that produces these devices, I just can't help sharing with others what I have found to be an excellent product. Now that the product is owned by an American company (it originated from a company in the UK) I anticipate it will become more widely known over time. I haven't had to mess with CDs for almost a year, and I would like to put them back in storage again if and when I find a satisfactory way to hook this up. This is what I plan to work on first, though I will need to give some more thought to how I go about accomplishing this task. Any ideas or help is appreciated. I know this is more suited for the Radio discussion board, but I just couldn't help sharing.
Anyway, sorry this got a little lengthy. It's been a pleasure getting to know all of you on here, and I look forward to further discussion in the future. --Duane
I was considering adding drop or two, as mine have begun to come up at the ends. It seems like a simple fix, but there may be some legitimate reason not to do this. I just can't think of one.
Does anyone know of any reason not to do this? Thanks.
See http://home.hawaii.rr.com/impala/ for better instructions.
I have 5100 miles on it and no problems except for roof trim.
I have never owned a new car with this few problems in the first months of ownership.
What I am concerned about is the upcoming (hate to say it) WINTER. I know that moisture will get in there and freeze and, well, the rest is history.
I passed on the replacement last time at the shop simply because the service manager couldn't give me a better solution to SECURELY and PERMANENTLY affix the trim. I am due for an oil change and tire rotation, so I will bring it up again to see if they have come up with anything new.

I'm gonna try a coupla drops of Krazy glue on mine, for now. I don't get freezing weather, so it may work for me. Plus, they're not pealing too badly.

These ladies enjoyed the trip and had no problems with the car. Now I get to remove the bugs off the bumper and outside rearview mirrors :-( Oil is still the same color as when it left the plastic bottle. Coming up on 6K miles.
I have used OnStar once for legitimate reasons. Was semi-lost in WI. Setup the account only to find out Route support was a Premium feature and would cost 200 bucks or something.
Heck, the truck driver directions were right on the money and FREE!
But I do like the fact that the air-bag deploy will be reported and the other standard safety features. Guess it is one of those things that you only miss when it is gone.

I think OnStar would also be better with an integrated GPS NAV system.
GPS/Nav would be sweet! In actuality, there is a GPS system with OnStar - just that the featires aren't for driver's - it is for OnStar to track US. So with Route Support, we would be paying them to tell us what is on the GPS screen that we don't have in our Impala's. On board driver GPS/Navigation would require an LCD of some sort.
Of course, that would negate the revenue-producing benefit of a yearly subscription from GM. They should still be able to come up with a way to disable such a system remotely, thus preserving the subscription model.
It would also be nice to incorporate the hands-free phone with an existing cell phone account. Maybe a smart chip socket in the dash somewhere. Or, an interface that mates with the hands free connector on the cell phone might be even easier to implement.
