Congratulations! With a late build date you will probably have 0 problems.

Don't take that Craprice/Impala to Switzerland. You'll embarras yourself and the rest of America.

That is all they have for his grave????? No big monument or anything? That is a shame.
  • this_is_nascarthis_is_nascar Member Posts: 199
I know that this has been discussed a bunch in depth, but it's difficult trying to review 5000 messages to get the details.

Can someone who has actually had the problem describe to me the symptoms that you were having. Did replacing the ISS correct the problem? Do they have to rip the car apart to replace it? Is it done in the inside or outside of the auto?

I'm asking because I have an early 2000 LS that is starting to act strangely. On turns, sometimes I "feel" something traveling up into the wheel.

Congrats Don! You'll absolutely LOVE the navy blue once it's all cleaned up. The paint is an amazing mixture of metallic colours - VERY rich looking, particularly with multiple coats of Zaino.

    Enjoy!

My disdain for the spoiler on the impala has been well documented so i will refrain from saying anything more.

What i would like to see is a ducktail spoiler like the one that was on the Impala SS.

    Sometimes less is more.
  • 00impala00impala Member Posts: 474
I had one of those "Duck Tail" Spoilers installed on my White '96 Monte Carlo LS, Exactly like the one that came on the '98-'99 Monte Z34, I got mixed reactions, everthing from "It looks like a "LUMP" on the trunk" and "Where is the rest of it?" meaning it looked like 1 piece of a 3 piece spoiler? Since it didn't extend to tops of the quarter panels just layed on the trunklid. I didn't like the Brickyard Type since it went down the quarter panels beside the taillights on that bodystyle. The smaller one Made a '96 look like a '99 to say the least.
  • ...just not in this case.

the spoiler on the Impala helps the looks greatly IMHO.

Without the spoiler the rear of the car looks awful to me.
  • black00impalablack00impala Member Posts: 6
I also had a problem with the ISS on my early 2000LS. The actual sound was more of a clunk that was felt through the steering wheel than a sound. The clunk was felt on low speed turns, braking, and going over bumps.

The first dealer I took it too replaced the Front Struts which did no good as I suspected it wouldnt after reading other posts in this forum.

I took it to another dealer and they replaced the ISS and no more problem! The clunking surfaced on my car at about 22000. I have driven about 2000 miles since the fix and no further clunking!!

Take this post to the dealer with you and maybe they will take a more serious look at the Intermediate Steering Shaft before they replace the struts. The Struts were a waste of time.

    Good Luck!! Kerry
  • Definitely. The spoiler turns an otherwise boring family sedan rear end into a very sporty, muscular looking treatment. (IMHO, of course)

However, it did make it that much more difficult to see the hydrant I backed into. But, at least I was sporty when I did it. ;-)

Tell me about the brakes are they ok or they are like the Malibu, rotor warping every weeks? How works the handbrake with the disc brake at rear, futur headaches likes before ? read grand-prix and lumina 95.I do not know for now if I will go with the Impala or the Regal, the Regal is a safer bet in regards of reliability, what do you think ? But one thing I like about both car, they come equipped with Oil life monitor :-))))
  • 00impala00impala Member Posts: 474
There were headaches with the rear brakes on ALL 1988 thru 1994 W bodied cars since the little rubber boots on the calipers would degrade and cause the cailper pins to corrode locking up the calipers, I know, I had a '89 Grand Prix and had to replace all 4 rotors once and the rear Calipers to the tune of $1000.00, GM changed cack to front disc rear Drum on the "95 on Lumina/Monte Carlo and then when the Impala arrived they used a new design, the Rotors probs on the Impala's are due to inferior Rotors on the Front as far as I know, Someone said they read there were some defects with early rotors front and back, in no way can it compare to the Malibu with the Major problems they have, they are right up there with the '88 thru '94 W body Problems, and ask anyone who ownes/owned a Pre '95 Lumina or Grand Prix and that will be the first problem they mention. REAR BRAKES Are Terrible. Don
  • Hmmmm. I can't find one anywhere. There is a parking brake foot pedal under the dash, though. Well...It looks like my Chevy Impala 'IS' my father's Oldsmobile! ;-)
  • baveuxbaveux Member Posts: 175
Hand brake, foot brake who care ! If you can pass your head through the steering wheel ,you can activate the pedal by hand,so that became a hand brake in my book.... Ok lets start again, anybody look at the parking brake design ? I am just curious like to know what stop the wheels, caliper activate by the cable ???
Any problem with the engine cradle on 2001 model ?
Any problem with idiot light ie:service eng soon, air bag etc that cannot be fixed and found on lot of Impala ?
I looked at rear of the Impala 2002 wow,if that look good like that live I'll go with it,thats the only thing keeping me away from it.

    00impala,thanks for your help !!!

Did you get the manufacturer 5yr/50K warranty? If so what was the cost and is there a deductable?
    Thanks
  • I get my head stuck in the steering wheel all the time. My foot, too, when I try and flash the hi-beams.

But, seriously, I personally like the single display, as opposed to having many "idiot" lights. Everything is in one place. It has let me know when the traction control has engaged and when I'm low on fuel. (The D.I.C. will also give a low fuel warning.)
Fortunately, I haven't had any other warnings.

Two excellent sources of information relating to Impala service issues are Nathan's Impala web site:
    http://home.hawaii.rr.com/impala/
and the "Chevrolet Impala Owners: Repair & Service Issues" Forum here in Edmunds Town Hall.

I've just had the reveal molding replaced on the roof about a week to a week and a half ago on both sides. Even though the driver side was the big problem with only a minor lifting on the passenger side. Now I find today that the passenger side is lifting at the front and rear. Anyone else who had theirs "repaired" have it happen again ? What was done the 2nd (or 3rd) time around to fix it ?
  • spider717spider717 Member Posts: 106
I had my driverside done about 2 weeks ago and noticed it's starting to com up in the rear again. I'll see how bad it gets then I'll just have them use a sealant or something to fix it.
  • this_is_nascarthis_is_nascar Member Posts: 199
I'll take your posting to the dealer. I have approximately the same amount of miles as you had when you noticed the problem. I hear nothing, but do feel it in the steering wheel.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
After reading that repairing the roof trim did not help, i will leave mine alone.

I changed my mind on the Warranty, they quoted a price of $600, When I asked how it differed from the 3/36 they lady said "It is the 3/36" Warranty for 2 more years, Yea right! So I came home and did some research on GM Warrantys and read that they do not disclose particular items not covered such a "wear down" things, like if a Piston ring "wears Down" and causes a failure they will not cover it because it did not Quote, En-Quote "Break", But 3 other things may break because of it and they too will not be covered, and the deal about the Deductible, if you have say a $100 deductible and need 3 parts replaced, that is $100 per part, unless yo pay way more for $0 deductible I just figued we would get rid of this car in 4 years anyway, so I declined it when we signed the papers and saved $600.00 and actually talked my wife into shaving 6 mos off the car loan in the process, payment really didn't go up much and it will be paid off 6 mos earlier. It has the Bucket Cloth interior with the Floor Shifter and the 3.4 and bolt on Hubcaps. Like Shamino's.

At least the Hubcaps are Still Silver, the ones on my new 2001 are "Greenish" and they ordered a NEW set of 4 from the Factory that they will replace next week, Strange thing is 4 other Impalas on the lot had the same problem so they ordered me a Fresh Set. Don

Hi, This is my first post on these boards but I have been reading them for about three weeks. Well, the reason it took me so long to post was because I decided to start at the first Impala post I could find dated back to 1/99, and read them in order to the end. If my math is correct, I went through over 14,000 Impala posts! Those of you who think leaving for a couple weeks and come back to a few hundred posts is bad might want to reconsider. :)
Going through all those messages might sound a little crazy to some of you but I think the time spent was worth it. It was enjoyable to go back and listening to the talk from the beginning before the 2000 Impala was even available, through the time period where some of you had four month waits for factory orders and experiencing the joy of you all receiving your new Impalas. Getting to see some of you in the 2001 brochure was delightful, and I can't pass up looking at the pictures some of you have put on the web showing off your car. :) Now here we are at the start of the 2002 model year with more fun to come.
No, I didn't read every single message, but I read those that were of interest to me, which were most of them. I did come across one performance boost that was if I skipped 75% of Teo's messages, it increased my MPH (messages read per hour) by 50%! Nah, just kidding Teo. :) It's great to have people like you around here who are well informed about our Impalas and cars in general.

Okay, a little about my Impala. I ended up buying my Navy Blue 2001 LS on 6/15/01, with a build date of 5/01. I had been considering factory ordering mine because I didn't really think $700 for a hole in the roof was necessary and it was next to impossible to find a navy blue without one and still have everything else. I ended up buying one fully loaded including the sunroof anyway at $200 under invoice, with no advertising fees, and $1250 in rebates. MSRP was 26454, I believe invoice was 24195, and I ended at 22745. I'm sure it's not the best deal anyone has ever received on an LS, but I had been shopping around for a couple of months all over eastern Iowa and this was the only dealer I found willing to go under invoice and not sock me with an advertising fee and had what I want, without even having to haggle as they are a bottom line pricing dealer. I spent less time with this dealer going through the whole process of buying a car than I did with others just trying to get their low selling price out of them, so that meant a lot to me. I'm sure it was the best deal I could get out of this area at the time I wanted to purchase, and it was nice not to have to go through the pressure and stress of negotiating and wondering if I was ripped off when I drove the car away.
Now I have about 1850 miles on it, not a single problem yet, and no regrets buying it. (Well, maybe a little regret now that the 2002's are out, but at the time I just couldn't wait that long. :) ) I've looked at many other models besides the Impala before and after buying mine, and still haven't found anything I like better and that offers as much for the price. Even if I had the money to get something better, I still love the design of the Impala, inside and out. As far as demographics go, I'm 24, single, and this is my first new car purchase.

Going through all the messages has also given me several ideas that I might like to try out when I get ambitious. I must say that the website that Nathan (night_owl1) put together is an awesome resource. Thank you Nathan and all who helped contribute information to that site.
The project I would be most interested in completing right now is to get my aftermarket stereo integrated into my Impala LS without having to swap out or relocate the factory stereo or disrupting the current setup, including OnStar. Why would I want to go to the trouble? Well, imagine having your whole music collection available to you anytime in your car or elsewhere without having to mess with CDs: http://www.riohome.com/products/riocar.htm

It is in my opinion, absolutely the best music product available at this time. I have had mine since last Thanksgiving and love it. It's removable so when you leave the car you can take your music with you. (Also prevents you from having to worry about theft.) When I had my previous car, I could listen to whatever I wanted on my way to work, take it in with me to work and hook it up to my PC, listen on the way home, and hook it up to my home stereo if I wanted to when I got home, without missing a beat.
No, I do not have any affiliation with the firm that produces these devices, I just can't help sharing with others what I have found to be an excellent product. Now that the product is owned by an American company (it originated from a company in the UK) I anticipate it will become more widely known over time. I haven't had to mess with CDs for almost a year, and I would like to put them back in storage again if and when I find a satisfactory way to hook this up. This is what I plan to work on first, though I will need to give some more thought to how I go about accomplishing this task. Any ideas or help is appreciated. I know this is more suited for the Radio discussion board, but I just couldn't help sharing. :)

Anyway, sorry this got a little lengthy. It's been a pleasure getting to know all of you on here, and I look forward to further discussion in the future. --Duane
  • Has anyone tried using "Krazy Glue", or the equivalent, to adhere the ends of the strips to the roof?

I was considering adding drop or two, as mine have begun to come up at the ends. It seems like a simple fix, but there may be some legitimate reason not to do this. I just can't think of one.

Does anyone know of any reason not to do this? Thanks.
  • spider717spider717 Member Posts: 106
Welcome to the board. I did the same thing as you, I read every impala post from the beginning. Including the whole Impala Radio discussion topic. I spent one night( about 5 non-stop hours) reading just that forum. What can I say, I had just picked up my Navy blue '01 (Sweet color isn't it) and I wanted to read EVERYTHING I could about getting my radio fixed.
  • wyoimpwyoimp Member Posts: 87
I wouldn't use "Krazy Glue" on any other similar glue for the roof srtips. It dries brittle, therefore it won't take any abuse or weathering. Try the 3M "Elephant Snot". Just remember both surfaces have to be clean and the glue is dry on both surfaces before pressing them together.

    See http://home.hawaii.rr.com/impala/ for better instructions.

Congrats on your impala. Same color as mine.
I have 5100 miles on it and no problems except for roof trim.
I have never owned a new car with this few problems in the first months of ownership.
  • Thanks! I didn't know Nathan added a roof strip page.
  • night_owl1night_owl1 Member Posts: 760
Actually, I was thinking of trying 100% silicone. That way the roof and the strip can flex to take into account different rates of expansion in the sun. I just gotta get around to it. =)

Duane, pop on over to the radio board, I have a couple of questions.
  • jeffreyw1jeffreyw1 Member Posts: 145
I would like to know what all Impala owners are using to clean the door panels of your car. One of the door panels in my Impala has a light black smudge near the bottom of the door. I think this was done during the manufacture of this car because this is the first time I have tried to get it off. First, I used warm water and a wash cloth. It didn't work. Then, I tried some Dove dishwashing detergent placed in some warm water and used a wash cloth to clean the door panel. This did not work either. Does anyone have a solution? I just don't want to discolor the door panel. Thanks for all help! Have a great day!
  • roderacerroderacer Member Posts: 311
Night_owl1 - - MAN! That roof trim is coming up! Mine isn't nearly that bad. But I imagine it will get bad.

What I am concerned about is the upcoming (hate to say it) WINTER. I know that moisture will get in there and freeze and, well, the rest is history.

I passed on the replacement last time at the shop simply because the service manager couldn't give me a better solution to SECURELY and PERMANENTLY affix the trim. I am due for an oil change and tire rotation, so I will bring it up again to see if they have come up with anything new.

    Impalaondubs: Sweet rizzide!

    Later!
    RR
  • Clear silicone sealant sounds like the best solution in terms of weatherproofing and flexing ability.
I'm gonna try a coupla drops of Krazy glue on mine, for now. I don't get freezing weather, so it may work for me. Plus, they're not pealing too badly.

My wife and mother-in-law went form here (Cheyenne) to the Grand Canyon and back.
    2130 miles
    67 gallons
    31.7 mpg
    60 mph
    5 days
    Still talking to each other
These ladies enjoyed the trip and had no problems with the car. Now I get to remove the bugs off the bumper and outside rearview mirrors :-( Oil is still the same color as when it left the plastic bottle. Coming up on 6K miles.

I had the same problem with my Geo when it was vandalised. They changed the roof, but the moulding on the driver side at rear looks like yours , they tried to fix it with no success,I finally tried my own receipe, contact cement, the moulding never moved since.

I've used "SIMPLE GREEN" for cleaning my door panels and sills for over two years now with no discoloration at all. I always go over the area with clear water after cleaning to remove any chemical residue.

How do you guys get 30+ mpg out of your impalas? I drive 78-79 mph and get in the 28s. What speeds are you guys driving at?

Anyone at their 1 year mark and debating whether to re-new?

I have used OnStar once for legitimate reasons. Was semi-lost in WI. Setup the account only to find out Route support was a Premium feature and would cost 200 bucks or something.

Heck, the truck driver directions were right on the money and FREE!

But I do like the fact that the air-bag deploy will be reported and the other standard safety features. Guess it is one of those things that you only miss when it is gone.

    RR
  • The hands-free cell phone feature is nice. I wonder if that's available without first subscribing to OnStar?

I think OnStar would also be better with an integrated GPS NAV system.
  • roderacerroderacer Member Posts: 311
I'd like the Cell option better if there was a way to integrate it to a cellular phone that a user may own already. I currently have 2 cells and I can't see getting another one via OnStar simply because of the hands free dialing, etc.

GPS/Nav would be sweet! In actuality, there is a GPS system with OnStar - just that the featires aren't for driver's - it is for OnStar to track US. So with Route Support, we would be paying them to tell us what is on the GPS screen that we don't have in our Impala's. On board driver GPS/Navigation would require an LCD of some sort.
  • I knew about the OnStar GPS. I meant that I would like a touch screen interface. I prefer not having to call them and ask them, when I can have an active display with voice, tracing the route step by step.

Of course, that would negate the revenue-producing benefit of a yearly subscription from GM. They should still be able to come up with a way to disable such a system remotely, thus preserving the subscription model.

It would also be nice to incorporate the hands-free phone with an existing cell phone account. Maybe a smart chip socket in the dash somewhere. Or, an interface that mates with the hands free connector on the cell phone might be even easier to implement.
