I have a Galaxy Silver Impala LS with the "prison grey leather". I think the grey leather looks and feels ok. However, has anyone felt the leather on the surrounding side seats? To me, it feels like vinyl? Is it really leather?

I have owned an Accord with leather in the past. I never had problem with "hot seats" due to the summer sun. I live in Southern Ca..... similar to FL climate. The best thing to do is tint your windows. This should somewhat eliminate the sun rays.

The Galaxy Silver paint is nice to have. I don't have to wash the vehicle as much as I had in the past with my Black Accord.

One thing I'm disappointed about the LS features is that the LS should have standard moonroof. My Accord EX had moonroof as a standard feature. Why can't Impala do the same with LS package and be competitive to Accord EX? Duh!

I'm interested in having my moonroof installed. I have heard through 2 dealerships that the aftermarket moonroofs are better then factory installed moonroofs. They said the aftermarket moonroofs have more options. Has anyone installed a moonroof as an aftermarket item?
  • duraflexduraflex Member Posts: 358
I am very glad NOT to have a moonroof. I have no use for it.
In many cars with moonroofs, you lose 2 to 3 inches of headroom. Never actually sat in an Impala with one.
One wish I have is that these cars could be ordered with more specific options than the packages. In Canada, that still seems possible from what I read here.
I realize it's more effeicient but you wind up with things you don't want or need.
Fortunately, the moon roof is not one of them.

I was not intending to offend anyone in regards to the Grey interior option of the Impala. Heck, I think the Galaxy Silver exterior is gorgeous and the benchmark color of the Impala line-up. Granted, Gray interiors whether they are leather or cloth have one great advantage over light interiors...the abilility to hide dirt and stains much better. However, after checking the gray interior I just didn't see myself spending time in it. For some reason, the Impala with the dark interior feels *cold* and looks *smaller*. By the same token, the neutral interior looks *bigger* and much more airy, but again, that's just my own perception.

I am very used to Tan interiors and the only cars that I remember ever owning with dark blue interiors were the '88 Ford Tempo and the '90 Honda Accord DX. After that every other car has been picked with a light color interior and so far so good.

Another problem of dark interiors in the Florida sun is the amount of heat they tend to absorb. That's why I prefer cars with light color exteriors and interiors.

Anyway, GM was wise enough to cater 3 different interior colors tastes for the Impala line-up: Regal Blue, Neutral and Gray. Somehow I feel these interiors are a bit tuned to extremes. I think it would be a good idea to offer perhaps a lighter gray interior or a darker neutral color...I don't know, just an idea.

I hope my leather seats ownership experience is as positive as some of you...looking forward to that aroma!

I like the Sunroof for what it is, but truthfully on past cars that had moonroofs I would never open the thing during the hot, muggy summer months...but it is a nice thing to have when driving at night or in mild, cool weather. I had to choose between the sunroof and the leather, so I took the plunge for the leather this time around.

Duraflex:: The Sunroof in the Impala opens and slides over the roof; therefore, it doesn't steal any interior headroom as opposite to cars where the sunroof glass slides insides to roof. the advantage of the Impala's sunroof design is that it allows to open it in *vent* mode (or tilt it) for fresh air without having the whole thing opened.

Anyway I really appreciate everyone's comments...looking forward to this gorgeous 2001.

hvan3 Many leather car seats actually have a thin vinyl covering over them to protect the leather. Don't know about the Impala.

The smell of the leather is actually not from the hide, but from the oils that are rubbed into it evaporating. You can add a few drops of a scented oil onto your internal air filter if you'd like to have a scented car.

sweetpolly Cloth seats in today's cars are amazingly resistant to stains. I happen to be a slob and I spilled countless times in my Dodge Neon. Never left a stain. My girlfriend recently spilled a glass of red wine all over the seats in a LeSabre I was renting -- a little bit of water got it right out.

The only color I like in the Impala is the neutral. It is light and tasteful. Why can't we get more elegant colors like ivory? Instead, they gave us that mustard color they called light oak and that playdough blue.
  • teoteo Member Posts: 2,508
I personally like the *Light Oak* interior that came with my '00 Impala LS (Light Driftwood Metallic). Very nice and tasteful color. What a shame that GM stopped making it. The Neutral is as good as it gets for those of us that like *light* interior colors. It looks very nice specially when trimmed in leather. I agree that GM should offer at least 1 or 2 more tones to compromise between the lightest and darkest interiors.

The blue interior was OK by me but not one of my favorites. Fortunately it is only offered on the Base Impala.

Here are a few rants and opinions.

I have a 2001 LS with sunroof and the liner rattles a lot near the back of the sunroof and not the front. The velcro there is taught. However, behind the sunroof the liner is very flimsy. My salesman says it shouldn't be that loose and the mechanic will have to take the entire liner out and replace it with more filler - whatever that is.

On other matter, I have a long torso and even with male big hair there is plenty of room. In my old Saturn SL2 with sunroof I had to slouch a little if I had a big hair day, but not so with the LS.

I live near Toronto and Platour lives in Ottawa and both cities are in the same Province. Our province is huge - temperatures could be 32F in one place and over 90 in the south - which is actually more south than a lot of States in the U.S. Take a look at a map and you will be surprised.

I have leather seats - and while they might be a little sweaty in the summer until the car cools down, I would rather have that sweat on the back of my shirt or on the surface of the leather rather than seeping into the cloth which in time becomes discoloured and even stinks after awhile. If you haven't tried leather don't knock it.

Teo you will enjoy the leather. It's classy!!

    I like the Flags!

I appreciate the comment on my vinyl carpet covers -water may have seeped thru the staple holes and is just sitting there - yikes! However, the water marks, if any, will be under the regular floor mats. But that is still better than the white salt marks left on the carpet where it meets the door step plates.

The On Star is free for one year up in Canada but only the basic help. If I want more such as road trip help, I have to pay about $250 CDN extra. If I want both for the second year, it would cost me more than $500 per year! That's about $325 U.S. Too rich for my blood.

In Toronto, a young lad, 8 years old, was in a '93 Voyager in the front seat. Van was going 25 MPH and it hit the truck in front = both air bags deployed = father not injured = boy KILLED. Warnings say no one under 12 should be in front seat with an air bag. Police are checking to see if boy was wearing the seat belt properly. His dad was and so was the lads sister in the back seat. They were not hurt. Apparently the bag snapped the boys neck back and severed his spinal column. His head did not hit the window - but the air bag cover did and that broke the windshield. About 4 months ago, also in Toronto, a woman was in a small Japanese car and she was going about 15 MPH and the air bag deployed and killed her. She was sitting too close. She was less than 5 feet tall.

Sorry for the long post - but I guess we have some topics to think or write about.

But Of course the sides of the Leather seats are Vinyl. It states that in the Brochure (Leather Seating Surfaces) The word Surfaces stands as the Key Word to only the Surfaces that you would contact being leather, the Sides and Back and Headrest are all Vinyl, If you look close it is obvious, it was the same thing on my 1996 Monte Carlo, they were Beige Leather, But the interior had a nice 2 tone effect with Beige Carpet and seats and a Greyish Black dashboard and a Black Steering wheel Don

I really like my gray leather interior. The tan or neutral colors remind me of a
mocha interior a salesman tried to push on me 9 years ago. My then 9 year old
son crawled in the back and trailed mud right through it- salesmen is saying no
problem it'll clean up really fast and I'm thinking not if I had to do it!~ Gray is
actually a very calming color for me.
Lots of slushy snow/rain mix around Chicago area today. I had a Toy MR2? in
front of me at 5 am- he pulled out and fishtailed backand forth 1/4 block. My
active traction display just came on once during the ride to work- cornered great
and felt secure the whole ride doing around 40-45mph. In truth I felt more in
control than my old 4x4 Explorer! Love my Impala

It appeals to me. Does not show dirt and does not soak up heat in the summer. My last car had a black interior and it was just a furnace in July.

Just picked up my car last night and put about 300km on it. What a blast! the 3.8L has got strong pull right on up to 120+ and brakes to match! The radio has an amp on it but I have not noticed any bass problems. Actually, I find that it is a little too much at moderate levels using the POP setting.

Platour - do you happen to have the part nos. for the front and rear splash guards? These are moulded for the car and not flat, right? TIA
  • hvan3hvan3 Member Posts: 630
Is it necessary to leave the traction control on everytime, or should I turn it off? I live in Southern CA and I don't have much use for it. What do you guys think?
  • platourplatour Member Posts: 252
Yes, the GM splashguards are molded to the body and fit very nicely if you have a 2000 model. Here is a link to a member's post on that subject, along with part numbers. Now, if I can get back in the 30-minute edit limit (my usual rant), I will post a pic as to how they have to be cut to fit on the rear for the 2001. Unless they have been modified for the 2001 by now. Perhaps they have. BTW, I hope you mean 120kph (75mph) on break-in<g>.

    http://home.hawaii.rr.com/impala/Splash_guard.html

Yes, the pic came up on edit. Xacto knife does the job in about five minutes. This problem relates to the rear inner wheel well linners being quite different in the 2000 and the 2001. The splashguards were designed for the 2000 so I had to do some minor cutting as you can see. But they do fit well post-surgery!

I have leather seats here in hot hot Phoenix, I was a bit hesitant at first to get them when we bought the car but after one summer I'm pretty much fine with them. I wear shorts year round so it is a bit hot at first but Polly is right, it cools off quicker than the cloth did in my Caprice. The only thing I'd wish for is that the a/c would cool it off as quickly as did my Caprice, that a/c was awesome! I have the gray leather interior but bought the blue floor mats for a little contrast, looks cool. Good luck on the new car...

Well, the personal calling package still isn't working. Another couple days it will be two weeks waiting for it. I spent about an hour talking with a personal calling rep today. He gave all the usual excuses, network problem, software problem, kinks in the system , etc. etc... I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I found out they are trying to give me a number with an area code in another STATE!! I told them that this was unacceptable, and they only said maybe there are no more available numbers in your state (Massachusetts). I am really at wits end with this.

    Hvan,

Leave the traction on. It may mean the difference between life and death! I also live in Southern California and the traction light has deployed several times for me, while driving the car. You never know when you'll need it. The last time it deployed for me was a few days ago, when I drove over an uneven surfaced road (in dry weather!). It's a good safety feature for us especially when we don't or can't determine if (or when) we need it.

I spoke about gray seats being depressing and suddenly it just dawned on me that my car seats are gray (leather, not cloth). I have the Medium Regal Blue LS model and I think gray leather looked better with that color. Funny thing, though, the gray leather seats don't make me feel depressed or seem drab.
  • jijcojijco Member Posts: 49
I have gray leather heated seats/sunroof in my loaded Galaxy Silver LS. I love both! Like I said, I really wanted a dark blue car, grey leather seats and no sunroof, but chose to buy this one, because I could'nt find what I wanted, and could'nt wait for my new ride. Even though dark blue is my favorite color, if/when I get a new Impala in '02-03, I may still get one like mine, with the police package for durability. I used to be against sunroofs, msotly because of leaking, durability problems, but I wanted the car, so got it. I now love it. I instictntively open the liner at night for more light, but only open it on occassion, usually just on tilt open mode. If I get another Impala, Imay not get the sunroof, though, I'll still have to decide later.
I thought I'd never use the seat heaters here in Hawaii, but it's nice on cold mornings when I get off of work. I remember times it got really cold here(for Hawaii) in my '84 Buick GN w/ my 160 degree thermostat/chip installed, and the car would not generate enough heat to warm me! So it comes in handy. I love the smell and look of leather, and it was a must for this car. I like greys, blues and blacks, so I like the grey seats. By preference, I just don't feel right with greens, browns, reds, etc. Even in our climate, the seats are not too hot, especially with the window tint(a must on this car here, too musch sunlight/brightness during sunlight). With cloth or leather seats, the best seatcovers I found unless you like fleece is the wetsuit type covers from www.wetokole.com I mentioned earlier. They are based in California and originated here in Hawaii. They can be custom made with different colors, and are side airbag compatable, and are waterproof. My friend had some custome made for his '96 Impala SS, with logos over leather seats, and they were very nice.
Either way teo, sunroof or leather seats, teo, you can't lose with this car. BTW, I have had no problems with the sunroof trim, but it's good to hear it's a fast, easy fix. JACOB

I was talking to a saleman at the dealer today. He mentioned that while the heated seats are available with only leather in the U.S., they are also available with cloth in Canada. Is there someone on this forum that has an Impala with heated cloth seats ?
Also, once the seat is turned on, does it ever cycle or turn off by itself. I know that it turns off with the ignition switch, but if the heater switch is inadvertently left on, will the heaters turn back on once the ignition switch is turned on to start the car once again after that car has been shut off ? Do the heaters cycle for a period of time such as the rear window defogger does ?

Initially I had the same problem trying to get the personal calling feature activated. I spent a lot of time with representatives giving me the same lame excuses as to why there was a problem. I even had to run the car for an hour while they tried to download software into my vehicle. I spent that hour driving around town and to no avail. Finally after three days they finally had my phone working. They managed to assign me a phone number without the engine running too. Regarding area codes and numbers.... They gave me a number in my area code, but the exchange (first three numbers of the phone number) was for a city that is forty miles away from my local calling area. I called to have my number changed so I could have a number within my area, but they said that they couldnt do it. If I was to call my phone in the car from a cordless phone standing right next to my car, it's a toll call costing .25 a minute. I find this to be a little ridiculous. I suggested to the personal calling representative that they connect me to the Verizon representative to discuss this issue, but they said that they couldnt. On Star personal assured me that in time I will be able to have the phone number changed so to have the number in my local area but for now I have to have it the way it was set up. I asked them how long is this going to take before I can have it changed? They said they didnt know.
So far im not to pleased with On Star. I have AAA for the last thirty years and Im sticking with them. When the On Star account is up for renewal next year (Feb.2002) I will see if there is any improvements, if not... bye bye On Star.... I wont renew. Otherwise..... my car.. 2001 Impala LS is fantastic. I love it very much and im very pleased with its performance and handling. The sound from both my CD and Cassette players and radio are fantastic. No problems, no distortion, bass is great... overall I rate this car 100%.

The GM brochure shows heated seats available as an option with leather only.....
  • mediumfrymediumfry Member Posts: 239
I've read the posts about the interiors and, while I take no offense to those who don't like leather, I like my grey leather better than any other option.

It's slippery. Yep, I like that. I can sit in the car with my feet outside, clap off my feet to get all the snow off, then rotate in without rearranging my underwear or causing undue stress on the upholstery.

Heat? I decided if I was going to spring for leather I'd get heat too, though I didn't figure it'd be all that great, mostly an "impress your friends" option. In reality, I've used it all winter and found it to be rather soothing, particularly on 10+ hour single day trips. Glad I got it.

And since they don't put state flags and favorite teams on here: I live in Michigan and I root for the Vikings, Cubs, and Cyclones (even though they made history recently getting knocked out of the NCAA tourney).
  • hunter39hunter39 Member Posts: 375
re-arrange your underwear?!! Well described my friend. Though shouldn't it have read: rearranging your upholstery and causing undue stress on your underwear? I must admit that I've never considered that to be one of the benefits of leather but I think GM has a great marketing ploy there...

fathertyricius: I totally agree with your assessment on OnStar. The phone is still not working. In the mean time, they are trying to give me a area code for Rhode Island, while I am in Massachusetts. We're talking a distance of at least 75 miles!!. When it does get activated, it will be long distance for me to call my car in the driveway. 75 miles to Rhode Island, then 75 miles back. It's totally crazy. It also may be why they are having trouble getting the phone setup.
  • 00impala00impala Member Posts: 474
to my knowledge on the Heated Seats they do not Turn Off unless you manually push the switch, If the switch is left on High or Low they will come back on once the car is re-started, They tend to get warmer at different times while warming so I think there is a cycle to the temperature heating of the seat, but they DO NOT go off by themselves like the rear window defroster after a certain amount of time Don
  • 00impala00impala Member Posts: 474
We all know by now that the area forward of the rear wheels tends to catch debris and can remedied by the wheel liners on the 2000 Impala, I was detailing my LS the other day after a trip to Western Pa, It snowed during my trip and they use Cinders on the roadways along with the road salt, I have the Mud flaps too, but after washing my car upon my return I was cleaning my Stainless Steel Exhaust Tips and I happened to run my hand along the area under the rear bumper, the area that goes back from the Mud Flap to the corner of the bumper, Man did the ROCKS and Debris come falling out of there, check it out on both sides, I was Surprised to find so much Debris thrown up in there, It is mostly on each side.... as the underside of the rear bumper near the license plate has a piece of plastic that runs along the plate area and nothing can get in there, But check out the corners of your rear bumpers, you may find a collection of rocks and dried up dirt that you would never know was there! Well, replacing the oxygen did not seem to fix the hesitation problem. The hesitation occurred the next morning after I picked the car up.

I have sent the information to the Better Business Bureau as they requested. BBB has opened a file on this complaint. GM has also opened their file and has called me for information. The Gm person said that when he gets all of the necessary information together, he would make me an offer. I assume that if I do not like the offer, I can make a counter offer. If this is not agreeable between us, it will then go to the BBB.

I have not retained an attorney at this time. Hopefully this can be handled without one. I will wait for the offer from GM. I have asked for a trade-buyback on a new 2001 Impala LS.

I took my 2001 down to the Chev dealer for its first oil change. There is 1,000km (625 miles) on the odometer; I have had the car four months and like some other members, I take a more traditional approach to getting the metal factory filings and residues of early break-in out of the engine. Whether this matters these days I do not know. But I wished to do it in any case. I asked the service rep when he recommended that I shift over to synthetic, expecting him to say after 3,000 miles or so. We all know the dino break-in debate. He said never....Just follow the GM 5,000km/3,000mile schedule with regular oil. The argument is that current SAE conventional oils are more-than-adequate to protect the engines of today and unless one encounters extreme cold or high-heat conditions (e.g. racing), there is no need for synthetic. So there you are, right from GM. I went with dino oil at $27CDN rather than $67CDN for the synthetic. Just a note for your information. I do not know what more to say: my warranty will not suffer.
  • crosley4crosley4 Member Posts: 295
The *word* right from GM's mouth through the service rep about oil?

    Would this be a similar dealer service rep that told one of the regular posters here that there was no *TSB* on the rear wheel well liners? ((-;

Modern dinosaur oils do an excellant job of lubricating, cooling and removing dirt from engines. Why do these oils do a better job than say 15-20 years ago? Modern additives......

Synthetic oils just do it a little better.
  • platourplatour Member Posts: 252
Yes, I am back on this subject and not just to hit the 2000 post mark. I did the tour of the internet re extended warranties (e.g. 1sourceauto and the like) and I was not impressed. So I went to the Chev dealer and I was not impressed either. Here are the GM figures and you be the judge. And GM counts from date of entry into service: when you drove off the dealer's lot. I will translate from metric and $CDN to USA measures. And I preface this by asking why does the Cavalier get the five-year treatment on warranty?
-extension from basic 3 years/60,000km (36,000 miles) to four years/80,000km (50,000 miles) is $1,300CDN or about $850US. Think of that: one more year of coverage at that price for about 14,000 miles.
-extension from basic to five years/90,000km (56,250 miles) for $1,465CDN or about $950US.
-extension from basic to six years/100,000km (62,500 miles) for $1,920CDN or about $1,250US.

This is a bloody scandal! The buyer of the Cavalier has a $950US advantage for buying a cheaper vehicle?? GM should have provided a five-year warranty on the Impala as they do on the Cavalier. And those prices are outrageous. The Impala is a nice car but GM should back it up......What this basically means to me given my driving habits is that at the end of three years and a projected odometer reading of 30,000km (18,000 miles), I am being asked to pay $1,300CDN ($850US) for driving the next 10,000km (6,250 miles): to the end of four years. Can anyone predict my reaction to GM's offer?

Last week, I saw an ad for 2000 Impala LS for $5.6K off MSRP. They had 4 in stock. Today, the same dealership is now selling 4 brand new 2000 Impala LS for $6K off. These Impalas are fully loaded (leather and moonroof).

They are also marking off $3K off MSRP for 2001 Impala LS. Again, fully loaded.

The name of the dealership is Wesloh and Sons Chevrolet in San Juan Capistrono, CA.

I'd be pretty ticked too if I was in your situation! When I ordered my 2001 LS last week I decided to go with the 5yr/160000km extended warranty. This cost me close to the same amount that you are quoting for the 6yr/100000km "extension". Just shows how much they really do gouge you for not buying up front. I drive 30-35k each year, so I should just about make it to 5 years.

I've noticed several people commenting that they needed to have brake work done fairly early in their car's life. Is this an across the board problem? I've been spoiled with my '98 Lumina - all I've done is replace the front pads once (didn't even need the rotors turned) in 110,000km (about 69,000miles).

I pride myself on having opinions based primarily on science and engineering knowledge. However, my thinking about the brakes is neither based on hard statistics nor personal experience (I haven't worn out a set yet). But here's what I think.

The brakes on the Impala are massive and hugely effective. They feel more solid than any brakes I've experienced. They "BEG" me to push harder just as an accelerator does when you have a racing engine under the hood. I find myself rolling up to stop signs faster and braking harder because I know I can. This will wear our brakes faster.

I admit I don't know for sure if the brakes have a design problem or not. But based on my observations above, I expect to replace my brakes after fewer miles than usual because I use them harder than usual. Since I like the safe and sure feeling I get from the brakes, I'll happily pay for new pads (and rotors if necessary) when the time comes.

I think he meant there was no police package on his car. I was wondering about him driving that fast, too, until I found out it was km/hr. I don't remember if I answered earlier, but I think both the police package and our cars are speed limited at 124MPH due to underhood heat problems above that speed. I don't think our cars are mechanically different per se than the police package, in reference to the performance. Other then the bigger alternator/battery(may be the same on the LS since the articles were referring to the police package inmprovement over the base Impala it starts off as), most of the parts are just for more durability, heavier electrical capacity and cooling capability, plus stiffer springs & struts/shocks.
I think Chevy should just release an SS with the existing engine like the MC SS at least, if they aren't going to add the V8. They now have all the parts. Besides, most of us would rather have the durability of a pushrod, low end torque engine and a cammer like the 4.0 V8 from the Olds Aurora that they might put in, even if it has 250hp.
All they have to do is put the police package in the LS, add the oil pressure/voltmeter guages from the MC SS, and the dual exhaust with the twin slant stainless steel tips and alloy wheels(16" versions of those on the prototype Impala SS) from the MC SS High Sport Package, and the blacked out grill with red bow-tie and the SS emblems and you have a pretty nice car. I would trade mine in for that. And it would be nice if they fixed the stereo. JACOB

I made a couple of updates this past week. Added two new Accessories links (Borla and Crutchfield) and two new Impala links (Avis and Epinions)

Someone asked about hooking up the middle set of tail lights so they come on also when the outer set come on.

I checked and the middle set only has the reverse lights. The outer "ring" is only a reflector assembly. I am not sure additional lights can be added without doing some major re-construction work and cutting the metal panel behind the assembly to provide clearance for the new lights.

I am thinking of building a new assembly to relocate the reverse lights and eliminate the faux tail lights. Any suggestions?

Haven't you heard people say, "Well, back in the States we (fill in the blank)"

How about "Free shipping anywhere in the US" then you read on.. "free shipping is not available in Alaska or Hawaii"

Mediumfry - I think you're right. I hadn't considered the performance difference between the Lumina and the Impala LS. The Impala is significantly more powerful. And I agree that the braking performance is impressive. When I test drove I did a couple of pretty heavy stops and found the stopping power to be nicely balanced and strong.

Platour - I don't know if "fair" entered into my though process when I bought the extended warranty. The peace of mind of the warranty is the main reason I purchased. I admit it would be very nice if I didn't need the warranty to keep me feeling "secure". I went with an extended warranty on my leased Lumina and haven't needed it for a thing. But the peace of mind is there. Clearly it's a personal risk-assessment thing for everyone. I hope you find a package that meets your needs for a reasonable cost!

I agree with the pieces for the SS, though would like the 4.0 V8 as an option.

First roadtrip with the LS yesterday, 300 miles, perfectly comfortable!!!

I go 6'3", 290lbs, and comfort is important.
