Some of you have been looking for bike racks, here's one you can mount to the spare tire. maybe like the one CONMAN #865 is talking about?

One word of caution concerning the spare mount bike rack. I had this exact rack (1st generation though) on my '94 Trooper and used it extensively. Over time the additional weight of the rack and bikes caused the rear door hinges to bend slightly. This led to the door being quite SQUEAKY over time. The functionality of the rack though probably offset the squeaks and misalignment of the door. It is a lot easier to use then my Yak roof bike rack and you never had to worry about your bikes hitting trees or the McDonalds drive through or ATM drive through. Another problem especially with todays Troopers is that you won't be able to have the hard spare tire cover on if you decide to go with this type of mount. Just my 2 cents! Remember....Keep on Troopin' even if they do do away with the trooper in the future.

Hey guys I stole this from the Vmag board. Paisan got an honorable mention too.

I wanted to accomplish two things electrically. 1st, I wanted the accessory circuit to drive the windows (and roof) and stay live until a door was opened after the vehicle was shut off. the 2nd thing I wanted was an accessory plug in the back.

Well you can't always get what you want but I was able to make the windows run with the key in the ACC position in addition to the ON position and I got a great outlet in the back. Both mods were done correctly in that there will be no electrical problems as a result. For those interested in how I did it read on...

1st the accessory plug. I ran 10ga. (I know, overkill) from the front to my outlet (just above the jack compartment). I ran it inside, under the trim and adjacent to the stock harness. To hook it to the electrical source remove the fuse block (2 bolts, 1 nut) and leave it hanging on the wires. Locate the cigarette lighter fuse. On the back side of that fuse you'll see an 18ga wire that runs to the lighter and a 12 ga wire that feeds the fuse and the other accesories that power up with the key in ACC. The fat (12ga) wire comes from the underhood acc. relay and can safely handle a hefty load. Wire an inline 15 or 20 amp fuse (I suggest right there in case your wire running to the back became chafed and shorted) and solder it in. I always prefer soldered connections... Next make a short ground strap from the lighter outlet to one of the nuts that holds in the jack mounting box. DONE:) Now the windows. While the fuse panel is still unbolted locate the power window relay. On the relay itself you'll note a diagram showing that one side (the 2 fat wires) is the switch and the other side is the coil to close the relay. With a voltmeter determine which of the 2 small wires has power when the key is ON and loses power when the key goes to ACC or OFF. Cut that wire and jump it to the cigarette lighter feed wire. Cap the other end (the end going back into the trucks wiring harness). DONE:) Now the windows will operate with the key in ACC. And it's all fuse protected and given that the only power your taking is a minute amount to close the relay there are no worries of overloading anything. Hope this is of interest and Piason, if you want this on your website feel free to cut and paste.

I have one very similar to that one made by Swagman. I was too worried about my door sag but this was never the case on my Suzuki Sidekick which did bend when I loaded the rack up. But on the trooper, the door appears not to sag so it appears the door is much stonger than my Kick. If that is the case it should not be a problem for a few year since my Sidekick did not have a problem over the 2+ years I used the bike rack on that.

The biggest downfall is backing into something (but roof and hitch mounted has this problems too) The good thing about the spare mount compared to the hitch mount is that the bikes are much higher off the ground so if someone rearends you, the bikes might be ok(car that is).

    Cheers,

I wouldn't worry too much, I know guys who use their rear tires to climb up onto the roof of their troopers w/o ill effects.

I designed a rack that can keep bikes inside your vehicle (front wheel off w/o putting the seat down) for about $40.00. Here's what you do, first your going to need a 2x12 cut to @ 13.125" long. Purchase the bike mounts as shown in the link. Rotate the rear seatback down to the flat position, the 2x12 fits into the plastic cavity on the back of the seat. With the bike inside, and front wheel off, install the mount to your bike fork, then close the rear door (30% side) for mine. Wedge the rear tire into the cavity on the door by the storage pocket to put a preload on the bike. Set the bike mount on the 2x12 and mark your holes to drill (I used a 1/4 lag bolt) to install mine...walla that's it!

The Axiom has a nifty mirror that I wonder if can be transplanted onto my Trooper. The Axiom mirror is an auto diming mirror plus has support to operate Garage Doors and turn on/off house lights. Wonder if the "turn on/off house lights" is an X10 device (www.x10.com)?

If all the electronics is contained inside the mirror, then it could work as we've got power in the headliner.
  • conman2000conman2000 Member Posts: 158
The auto dimming mirror is cool. I think there are some aftermarket one out there for this. Plus the garage door opener is the "Smartlink"
which many autos come with now. The problem with them is that they cannot handle the rolling code doors which most new garage doors use now so it would be just better to get the aftermarket dimming mirror and separate door opener. I saw one in JCW that when you flashed your headlights, this would open the garage door. You had to use your own garage remote and splice in the unit with it. Very cool.

FYI. I ordered the Lund guard from JCW(98-2000 model) for my 01 Trooper. When I get it, will post the pics at Paisan's site as my freeservers site seems to be blocking linking now. :(

It should work. The power is there for the map-lights. Hmm I wonder how much saint Charles wants for an axiom mirror?

I saw a black trooper today with a banged in bumper at the corner.--glad I have my bumper bar. On the ferry across LI Sound they directed the SUV behind me to pull almost right up against it.

The www.freeservers.com site does not allow one to view a picture file directly. Pictures I want to show on Ebay don't appear either. I get around this by making an HTML file with the reference to the picture.

After a look at the BigHorn catalog, maybe the problem is not Isuzu but instead Isuzu-America!!

There's a lot of stuff there that could add sales pizzaze.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
It could have pushed the Trooper right into the near Luxo-luxo market.

But, damn GM is so greedy they probably told Isuzu "no way"

    :(

The rack is from Swagman which I got at a local bike store for $130. I have seen similar ones on the net for under $100. The rack is removable which allows you to put the tire cover back on. The only downfall of using this rack is that the spare tire mount(black plastic piece in the middle) has to be removed(unbolt)to mount the rack plate. So this makes the tire removal a two person job. Also you can't use the tire cover when the bikes are on.

More pics at Paisan's Site. (Thanks Mike!)

What's the thing on the front left part of the hood on the Bighorn in the pic. Satellite dish?

Japanese automakers often bring their vehicles to the U.S. for photo shoot for ads. They want nice scenery to go with their vehicles. My wife works for an insurance agency, and she says that ad agencies purchase insurance on vehicles while being used in the U.S.

That thing is an additinal mirror to help the driver to see left side of the vehicle. It's commong on trucks and vans to eliminate blind spont.

Thanks Eiji, It's amazing how much stuff is in there. Kinda frustrating though, you would think we could get our hands on most of that stuff, our OEM parts come from Japan so whats the big deal?

If it's O.K. with you Paisan I would like to E-mail Isuzu America with a link to the pics asking this very question, maybe if we all bombard them with e-mail they'll do something about it? I'll wait for your response. Also, on the last page of the catalog at the bottom is http://www.isuzu.co.jp/isuzuacc/ which is the Rodeo version, maybe you could post that for the Rodeo bro's.

Why don't you see the SUVs in this country with the "blind spot" mirrors?
  • emiuraemiura Member Posts: 59
I think the truck looks better without that small mirror in front. I often see people use stick-on type convex mirror that provides wider viewing angle. Personally, I feel Trooper's big side mirrors are sufficient for normal driving.

it is probably standard with a rear facing 3rd row seat.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
They don't face backward though. They face forward and fold up against the walls.

    -mike
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
I have seen them facing both directions. LittleTykes sells an after market seat for the trooper that faces rear. But you are right, the factory ones I have seen, face forward.

I tried order a set of 265/75-16 tires from tire rack.com, the rep stated they will not gaurantee fit and return privelege, since i'm deviating from the original size. Can anyone tell me the exact brand and model of upgraded tires on trooper that gaurantees fit w/o clearance problem.

    Thanks
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
You can probably go even larger than that since the Trooper has a lot of clearance. I know people are useing that size with Pirelli Scorpion ATs for sure.

  • sdc2sdc2 Member Posts: 780
I have Pirelli Scorpion AT 265/75R16s. Absolutely no rubbing, full turn or full articulation, off-road or on.
  • keepontroopinkeepontroopin Member Posts: 297
How much do the Pirelli's cost. Explain the size diff again.
  • sdc2sdc2 Member Posts: 780
I paid $93.99/tire at Sears on sale, plus balancing etc. Regular price was around $112/ea. I believe there are some minor regional variations in those prices.

The 265/75R16s are 7% bigger than the stock 145/70R16s on a Trooper, and will affect your speedo accordingly. If your speedo reads 70, you are actually going about 75. It's no big deal, I've gotten used to it.
  • keepontroopinkeepontroopin Member Posts: 297
Do the tires appear larger on the vehicle?

Does anyone want to buy my 2001 Trooper LS wheels?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I'm sure that 4 people on here would be interested in buying the 4 rims individually, so we could have matching spare tires. E-mail me and let me know how much you want for each. If you are planning on going to Uwharrie in July I could pick up any/all for people up here in the NE.

How much do you want for one?
    grucela@yahoo.com
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
That's incorrect. It would mean that the tire diameter is 31% smaller than the other? I don't think so.

I've always heard that Pirelli tires, though a performance tire, was very poor as far as wear was concerned. I once had some Pirelli tires on a Caravan and did not get anywhere near the advertised wear. Other people I know agree.

What do you think of Pirelli tires? Am I wrong?
  • sdavitosdavito Member Posts: 71
My opinion on tire wear is that the wear/miles is a direct tradeoff to the traction/wear. Hard tires tend to get high mileage but have lousy traction. Soft tires wear out quicker, but uasualy stick like glue.
