There are couple of Odyssey EX at Norm Reeve Honda @ Cerritos. They are asking $2000.00 above MSRP. (May be that is why the Odyssey are still at their parking lot). There is also a LX at Norm Reeve Honda @ West Covina. They are asking for $26,000 plus. This Odyssey comes with CD ($699), roof rack ($699), and some other things. If you can't wait, you may want to give them a call.

How long is your wait going to be, or was it on the lot already?
  • elmer10elmer10 Member Posts: 2
I could find nothing on the lot anywhere in the chicago area. Had trouble even finding one to testdrive. I am told that the wait for my LX will be 2-3 months, which I am willing to do.

Thought I'd pass along this dealer for those waiting in the Washington D.C. area.

I tried the locals, Herson's, Ourisman, Rosenthal, Sport, etc. last August, and got pretty much the same responses. 3 - 6 month wait or about $5K in dealer installed options.

Coleman Honda had (still has) numerous MY 2000 Canadian EX at $2 - $3K over MSRP, these have been covered here before, I did not care for the 3rd party warranty or the price. The fact that they still have so many is testament that most others reached the same conclusion.

Put down a $500 deposit with Herson's in August. They managed to lose my business in September after a classic bait and switch game. Kept
my cool and got my deposit back. Suffice it to say
that I would stay away from this dealer.

A neighbor got a 2001 SS EX from Heritage Honda in
Towson (Baltimore), MD in September at MSRP. She
recommended them. I finally took the plunge and
gave it another try and put down a $500 deposit
with them on 11/04, got my dark green EX at MSRP on 12/08. No fuss, no muss.

Used the delivery checklist from this forum (super!), and also got the Honda care 7/100/0
warranty at $895. I was told by the dealer that
this price equates to $50 over cost on the
    warranty.

No pull, clunks or problems so far. Honda got
this one right, a super van. The product is worth
the hassle in getting one, hang in there.

    Cordially,
    Erik V.

How many of you buy it in another city without
even checking it out and have the dealer ship
it to you? Certainly kind of risky right?
  • kalajiankalajian Member Posts: 43
I for one, don't have a problem with buying from a remote location. If there are any problems, the local dealer can address them under the warranty. You might have to travel a little bit to find one at the price and equipped as you like. Any dealer can do any necessary service or warranty repairs.

    Can anyone help me?

I desire a 2001 Green Odyssey EX with no add-ons. I am willing to travel, but refuse to pay these crazy prices. I sincerely hope they start producing more cars.

If I choose not to buy the Odyssey, then what is the opinion of the group regarding the 2nd best mini-van.

Please do not respond if you are a dealer, unless you can offer the car way below MSRP!!!

You can e-mail me directly at Shorehamli@aol.com

I live in Oregon and many of the dealers are selling Odyssey's shipped in from Canada. The warranty is invalidated by the move across the border but they are including a similar warranty (3 yr/36k) to make up for it. The best price I have found is 26K for a silver. Does anybody know anything about these grey market Odyssey's and is this a good deal?
  • rictomrictom Member Posts: 89
I think your greatest concern is to see if that other warranty is as good or better than the Honda one. Ask specific questions or see if they'll give you a copy of the warranty to look over. If not I'd wonder why. Plus the Canadian Ody's gauges are marked in KM's with miles marked in a smaller font on most of the gauges.
    Good luck

If I hadn't bought the Odyssey, I would have bought the MPV, no doubt about it. It's smaller but the interior is smartly done and the 2.5L Duretec seems to be serving the current owners well. It also can be had for a little over invoice and still has a 1k rebate I think. My .02

I've had my EX Odyssey for about two weeks. We notice that it pulls slightly to the right. I know it's been posted before what the possible causes are, but I can't find it. Can someone tell me? Thanks so much for your help!
  • kalajiankalajian Member Posts: 43
FWIW, I met a local Honda dealer mechanic at a party and he said he thinks that when they chain the cars down on the transport trucks to ship them that it affects the alignment causing them to pull to one side. An alignment fixes the problem. Don't know if this has any validity, but that's what I heard.

There were warnings in most topic lists and in "Talk to the Hosts" as well as in the main Town Hall screen. (But maybe we can create a few court cases out of this?!? ;-))

Why dealer began sell Ody under MSRP? Check the Ody holdback on the
Edmund. The holdback changed from none to 2%.
  • hondadealerhondadealer Member Posts: 2
    Not true.
Hold back has been there all along.
Availability is up slightly, demand is down slightly.
What determines the selling price is not what it costs the dealer but what others will pay for the same item.

If you go to post 89 in the Honda Odyssey XXX forum, you will see the Honda TB bulletin posted by Trevor at honda-accessories.com.

    The site is http://www.honda-accessories.com/odyssey/drift.pdf.

At first I thought I had the problem. But the crowning of the road makes a huge difference. If I get in the high speed lane on the highway, it seems to be pulling left, middle lane stays about the same and right lane really seems to pull to the right.

    Hope this helps.

I asked for price quote from Penske for a DX with no options and was told they do not charge over MSRP. I put down a deposit and was soon given a build date. I also received a couple of calls offering me the color I wanted but with options I didn't want on vans where the deal fell through. On the 2nd call after I turned down the van, they asked me what options I wanted. I told them none and they said they required around $1500 in options (both vans they offered me had that much in options). They just strung me along until it was close to when I would get the van. They probably did that to the 2 people that turned down their allowed van. So, I am still on 2 other dealer waiting lists where they have assured me that no options are required and that they will sell the van for MSRP.

Long story - last July I sold my previous car and started looking for an Odyessy. I'm in Northern California; local dealers all wanted $2000 - $3500 above MSRP. I contacted several of the buying services - no help, they only referred to same dealers or could not promise a delivery date. I discovered this message board and read everything back to #1 which led me to Brandon Kimmel at Lancaster Pioneer Honda, (661) 945-3521, one of the few dealers in all of California selling at MSRP. Phoned Brandon and placed order for LX, sent (refundable) deposit Aug. 1st, very easy to deal with Brandon, warned it would be several weeks. Come mid September, Brandon called to say he had an LX, color CSS, but by this time I had decided I didn't like CSS color (funny prune tint in some light) and wanted to wait for a 2001 in Starlight Silver with the adjustable height/angle seat. So I asked Brandon to put me down for the first SS 2001 LX. Unfortunately, there was one order before mine and it would be a while longer before the 2001s came in. No problem, until mid November, the rainy season fast approaching, and still no production date. On to plan B. I had noted from posts on this board that Odyessys are more readily available and even going under MSRP in the midwest, Ohio and Indiana. I have relatives in Indiana that I would love an excuse to visit. So I emailed inquiries for an SS color LX to about 10 dealers in Indianapolis and around Indiana. Immediate success! One dealer had a DEP LX in stock at MSRP, several others others offered vans at MSRP with delivery in a few weeks up to two months, and best of all, one had a van in my color choice scheduled and not spoken for. The dealer was DPatrick in Evansville, Scott Maddox, Honda Sales Manager. I called Scott and without any attempt on my part to bargain he offered a $500 discount off MSRP! To make the long story a little shorter, I flew to Indiana and took delivery Dec. 2nd. I paid $23,915.25 including $74 document fee and $1.25 Indiana "wheel tax" for the van. I also had them install a set of the aluminum alloy wheels (much better looking than the EX aluminum wheels and I detest the plastic imitation wheel covers) for $981.34 with a set of wheel locks thrown in. The whole transaction was handled professionally and was totally painless. Now I'm back home in California after 3200 miles of trouble free motoring, visiting friends and relatives on the way back by way of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. I'm very happy with my Ody, 24 - 25 mpg cruising 75 - 80 mph, zero oil consumption, zero "sample defects" detected so far.

Conclusion: if you can make it to Indiana, contact Scott Maddox at DPatrick Honda. You might also try the other dealers in and around Indianapolis; I suspect they may be open to negotiation from the telephone calls I got. I think the supply/demand situation is starting to ease. My local dealer has just cut his markup on LXs from $2000 to $750, although it's still $2000 on EXs.

Postscript: Three days after I had committed to the Indiana trip, Brandon called me; he had finally got an SS color LX for me. It had a production date 2 days later than the one I ended up with.

Just curious, any problems bring the Odessey into California? Did you have to go to the DMV to pay California sales tax? Did the dealer have special forms to exempt you from Indiana sales tax? Pease let me know the basic procedures, as I've been tempted to buy out of state. Please give both pros and cons. Thanks!
  • leon33leon33 Member Posts: 5
All Odyessys are 50 state compliant. I will have to pay California sales tax when I register. Since my Indiana temporary registration doesn't expire until 1/1/2001 I am hoping to delay registering until Jan. 2. CA sales tax decreases 1/4 percent as of Jan. 1; however I haven't confirmed that this is acceptable. The Indiana dealer didn't have any special form to exempt from Indiana sales tax that I am aware of; I did pay the $74 document fee which I assume included a fee for the temporary registration. Basic produre, call the dealer, place the order, send deposit via check or credit card, show up to take delivery with cashier's check for balance. Pros: get your Ody sooner and cheaper. Cons: expense and time for a trip out of state, CA registration procedure not automatic, possible difficulties with financing (I paid cash). Go for it! I hope everybody reading these posts is smart enough to not pay over MSRP which will eventually force California dealers to cut out the huge markups.

I live right by Jay honda in Cleveland OH. They had 3 Ex's in stock ready to ship. All around Cleveland, $500 off MSRP is the norm. If robs with Jay (doubtful), Mentor Ohio will give the same deal (not sure about shipping), Cleveland Heights Honda (www.motorcarshonda.com)will give same deal with cars coming in and out of stock weekly (3 week wait if ordered), ask for Jim Perdenzak and tell him Mr. Bode sent you. Good luck, I have no idea about shipping when factoring this in, but sounds like typical freight.

THE TWO MOST COMMON THINGS PEOPLE LIE ABOUT 1.) WHAT THEY PAID FOR THEIR HOUSE 2.) WHAT THEY PAID FOR THEIR AUTOMOBILE. EXAMPLE THE 100,000 HOUSE WAS 250K AND THE 26,840 MINIVAN WAS 23,949.00 HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Putting the ODY on a credit card was just for the free air fare. We had it set up with advance approval and you are required to pay off a certain amount in the first month. We figured we might as well get the ticket out of the car if we could. We met the sales manager David Daren at Kendall Honda, he was one of the guys that helped move our luggage. And yes, they did not have to treat us as good as they did they did but that seems to be the attitude of that dealership, which is a welcome difference from my area (SF Bay). I have some pictures of the park in the center of Eugene. Please email me at GSKAGGS552@mindspring.com and give me your email address and I'll attach copies of the pictures we took of your beautiful city. Thanks

Bought my gg ex in cleveland OH from Dennis at Jayhonda. ex was 26640 plus $50 doc fee and 19.25 for thirty day tag with your choice of options. We live in Atlanta and could have had it shipped but opted to fly on buddy pass with delta for 23$. Got reimbursed cab fare to dealership. stayed over night in hotel and gas expenses too. Only disadvantage was long drive through snow, ice, wind and rain, but got to see how it handled in those conditions, and the 700 instant miles we put on. Hope Clark Howard is proud!

My husband said we can get an Odyssey but keeps moving the date back. I want one by the time our next baby comes, in May. Now from reading the posts here and on other boards I see I need to get busy researching and possibly waiting months to get the one I want. My question: Has anyone had any experiences with dealerships in Jacksonville, Florida? I remember seeing a Savannah ad in the paper a few months ago saying they sell below MSRP - anyone try them? Thanks!

I had seen a previous post about Ganley Honda in suburban Cleveland, and I called and spoke with Dave Preis (440-777-9400). I have a GG LX on order to be delivered in Jan for $640 under MSRP: $23,700, plus $70 for processing fees. He seems very honest and up front. He says he will not charge my credit card for a $500 downpayment until he has the VIN # of the vehicle from the factory, which he knows he will be getting in January. I've spoken with many dealers in my Chicagoland area and was less than impressed. My husband will be getting a cheap airline ticket to Cleveland ($85), Dave will pick him up at the airport, and he'll get the van & drive back. Granted, I don't have the vehicle yet, but my intuition tells me that this is for real.

Well...after 6 months of monitoring this board. I wish someone had told me about the Nissan Quest. I got sick and tire of Honda dealers and price gouging..and listened to my neighbor and bought a Nissan Last week. Everyone who is waiting to buy a Honda should seriosly check this van. I bought a 2001 GXE with comfort option for only 21k. The Van has a very smooth engine and transmission. Also drives just like a car not bulky like a Vans. Granted the engine is only 170HP but its very adequate for normal driving conditions (not towing anything) and engine is V6 nissan which is the best Japanese engine. Why pay MSRP or MSRP when you have a good alternative? Not to mentioned being jacked off by dealers!!! Also it has much less problems as oppose to Honda's. Don't forget when supply meets demand on Sept. You will loose your $$$ because these same dearlers will start to sell them below invoice like they should be. Just my 2 cents

I found Janis Pohanka of Pohanka Honda of Fredericksburg to be honest so far. I get delivery in 3 weeks of a GG EX. MSRP plus $149 doc fee and that's it. all options at MSRP so you can pick and choose. Janis is on her honeymoon until 12/26 so try after that date. You are welcome to use my name (Arthur Smith). And for the record, I have no connection with any auto dealers (I work for the feds).

Nice to know that dealers have Odysseys starting to pile up on their lots. But since this is a "prices paid" category, it would help a lot to know what these vans are costing.
  • maebeemaebee Member Posts: 3
Thanks to the many suggestions and ideas that have been offered here, I decided to purchase a 2001 EX Navi SS. We had a similar one only in a different color (MB) on order at a local dealer near Rochester, NY. It was to arrive in January. Last week I got a phone call from a dealer in Buffalo, NY that they had the SS in stock. Took the 60 minute drive to check it out and liked it. Bought it for MSRP. No "required" options. We take delivery right after Christmas. I'll see if they are willing to sell me the Honda extended warranty for about $900. If not, I'll search these pages for the name of a dealer who will.

Shaganasty, thanks for the checklist. I am sure that it will come in handy next week.

We looked at the other vans, including the Chrysler products. They are too expensive for what you actually get. The Odyssey is worth the wait and I really wanted the Navi system. Glad to get rid of my Chevy Venture. It is just not up to today's quality standards I expect. Too many rattles,

Thanks again for all the posting. Most were very helpful.

Still have a waiting list at all Honda dealerships and are still selling at MSRP as they have since introduced. At MSRP, the Odyssey gives as much value as other minivans with $2,500 (or more) discount off MSRP.
Check the prices and features of all brands to verify...and
no, we do not own an Odyssey. Would probably be driving one now if they had been available March 1999 without a 5 month waiting list and we would have felt we got a good deal at MSRP (1999 LX $23,615 includes Destination). Odyssey prices have not risen very much in 2 years so the 2001 Odyssey is an even better bargain at MSRP (2001 LX $23,930) than it was in 1999. By comparison, Sienna LE is now $26,437 and GC Sport is same as 99 GC SE + has deleted some features and is now $28,340---up from the $27,490 of a 1999.
The Ody LX has a separate rear heater fan and heat between 2nd and 3rd rows at MSRP...Sienna LE does NOT. Sorry buddy, check the facts. Odyssey is a good deal at MSRP.

I gave up on finding one in Northern Va. I just bought a GG EX Thursday from Dennis at Jay Honda in Cleveland. He sold it to me for $26,640 plus document fee ($50?? - I'd have to dig out papers to be exact) and the cost of temp. tags ($39??). I flew out of BWI on a RT fare of $100. The drive back was interesting because of snow, but I stopped and visited a cousin who conveniently lives about half way. If you want more details you can write to me at eloos@erols.com.

at least in the lower mainland, Greater Vancouver, British Columbia area are available for immediate delivery. However, they aren't exactly piling up on the lots (the most I've seen is 8-10 on the Honda large dealership 5 minutes from my house; usually they have about 5 or less under the white shrinkwrap sheets), but they there on sale for MSRP or less than MSRP.

I bot a EX last week in NJ. Here is my story: I started calling and sending email on Monday, and found almost no dealers in NJ had any car in stock. Most waiting list was for 2-4 months. It appeared that one had to pay extra to get the car in stock, or to pay MSRP if you could wait. Then starting from Thursday just before Christmas, I received calls from a few dealers (Hudson, Staten Island, Monmouth, Planet, Route22 Hondas, etc.) that they have cars coming in stock. I went to one of the dealers and bot the car in stock at sticker. It seemed that there may be a littile slack on price before the new year. But still you have to bargain really hard.

Thanks for all others posting here. I learned a lot from you. Let us keep it going.

I was visiting relatives in NY area for Christmas and while there we past a dealership and saw a few Odysseys outside, we made a quick u turn, and two hours later, I had a new GG EX Navi. I paid MSRP, the car had a wood grain dash kit, which was already in the car. They gave it to me at no extra charge. We made it home to Virginia without a hitch. I love the Navi system. I would highly reccommend this salesman Andy in NY. Being an out-of-towner, I felt they treated me with respect and did not try to sell me the moon. If you want more info on my experience in NY, email me at ciarapinto@hotmail.com. I justed wanted to tell a "good" NY story that had a happy ending.

Having read all the stories about price gouging and bait and switch tactics by Honda dealers, I thought I'd write about my experience in buying a Odyssey.

I called 8 dealers, 1 in fresno, 1 in Palmdale/Lancaster and 2 in Northern California and 4 in Southern California. The prices ranges from $2000 over MSRP to one dealer in Southern California who would only charge me MSRP but I had to buy $1000 in accesories. The best lead time any of them came up with was 2-3 weeks.

Then I called Gardena Honda and spoke to John in Fleet Sales
    (310) 515 5700 ext 233. He quoted me MSRP+$50, (for wheel locks) and had a white car in stock. Two days later, I flew down to Los Angeles, picked it up and drove it back to No California. The buying experience was fantastic. Wish you all the same experience !

Stay away from the sharks that charge over MSRP and make you wait.

    Shiva

ps: There are 3-4 dealerships in the country that are larger than Gardena Honda but since I don't know who they are I wasn't able to call them. I have since found out that Norm Reeves Honda (also in Southern Calif) is one of them buy I don't know how good their prices are.

Recently started looking into a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna purchase. 2 dealers in MD have stated the lead time is 3-4 months, price is 26,400 with no negotiation. We are interested in the EX. Also, any advice about purchasing the sound system, or getting it on our own.

I'm in central Jersey. I need an Ody EX by early April. Started calling around Tuesday morning. Spoke to 8 dealers, several could do MSRP with delivery in 3-4 months. A couple were fairly obnoxious and wanted MSRP plus $2000 (or dealer options) for future delivery. One dealer had two EX's on the lot for MSRP plus $2000. Since I'd heard that some people were being strung along on orders, I decided to pay up because I didn't want to deal with any snags around my wife's due date. By the time I got there after work one was gone, so I had no choice on color (GG). Paid MSRP+$1500 to lease. Manager said he could have done A LITTLE better on purchase, but I don't know enough about the vehicle to feel comfortable owing it. Not proud of how much I paid, just providing information that "same day" market in New Jersey is definetely clearing at MSRP + $1500.

I called several dealers in Mass and most of them are quoting $26,840 (MSRP) with 1-4 months wait time. Almost all of them require only $100 refundable deposit.

Has anybody here got any better deals in Mass or New Hamshire? Thanks in advance. The other question I have is that, since the deposit is refundable, is it a good approach to be on several dealers' waiting list?

After weeks of calling and e-mailing, I only find two dealers in LA area are selling at MSRP. They are Metro Honda at Montclair (800-649-2277 ext 6120, Yvonne Mason) and Gardena Honda (800-883-3330 ext 247, Alan Luz). There are a waiting listing from both dealer. Two dealers are selling at $500 above MSRP are Goudy at Alhambra (800-423-1114, Terry) and Nelson Honda at El Monte (800-660-3464, Amy Chung). At Goudy, Terry told me (early December) that I would able to get my van at mid January with the color MB. I placed a refundable deposit with Nelson. Amy told me I have to wait at least until after February for delivering my van. Other dealers are asking $1000 or more above MSRP. Although Norm Reeves is a huge dealer, they are asking at least $2000 above MSRP with some dealer added option. The sales person even tried to ripe me off by saying floor mat in the EX is a dealer added option. Luck I did my research, I pointed out in the Honda's brochure floor mat is inclued in the price. I just walked away from this dealer.

Two weeks ago, I picked up my Odyssey from Pasadena Honda (800-20-HONDA, Perry) with $500 above MSRP. Perry was asking for $1000 above but I shown him the receipt of deposit from Nelson $500 above MSRP which I was willing to pay. I also told him Goudy could delivery my van at mid January at $500 above. I could wait three more weeks for it. He finally agreed to $500 above MSRP. When I asked for the Honda Care Warrenty, he was selling at $1600. After I shown him the print out from the web: http://www.1netweb.com/checklist.htm at the price of $895, he agreed to match the price. I like to thank shaganast for preparing the list and place in the web so everybody can download it.

Happy about paying $500 above MSRP for the van just two weeks for waiting ???? (At least my wife will not on my back)

Do your homework or your will be riped off by the "shark" dealer.

I just made a deal for a new AS Odyssey EX. Great deal of $25,840 (includes destination) $0 documentation fees. Also got a great finance rate of 6.82% for 60 months. The EX was shipped on 12/21 and should be on the lot in approx. 2 weeks. I have a buyers order with the in #. Good luck to everyone shopping for an Odyssey. I had other dealers willing to sell me an EX at $500 below MSRP and they had them on the lot.

Also ran into a lot of greedy dealers wanting $1000 above MSRP and had a snooty attitude.

For an extra $500, I decided I could wait for a couple of weeks.
