That deal, while possible, made no sense.
I don't think "posturing" has anything to do with a manager's decision.
Who knows why they would have lost money on a popular car?
Most posts on the 'Prices Paid' board note when their deal included a trade--and seem to be fewer and far between.
And I still don't see why anyone would bother to exaggerate their deal. To what end? Bragging rights don't go very far when one's identity is anonymous....
I always say that all I care about is the difference I'll be paying. Compare wholesale to wholesale, or retail to retail. Doesn't matter to me, because I know I'm not willing to add, for example, more than $10,000 to my trade. So I don't care if they offer me $1 million for my trade, the new car had better not be more than $1,010,000.
So I'll let it go.
So I guess the two of you honestly don't believe that ANY of these prices have been false?
No prices yet.
I do agree with you on the new Odyssey. It FAR surpassed my expectations in every way!
I do know there are always people who enjoy raining on someone else's parade if they get a chance.
A person wants to buy a new vehicle. So he makes up a few screen names and starts posting false sales transactions that are all great deals on several car boards, and then prints them out and brings them in to present to the sales person and says, "I want the deal these people are getting".
I'm not saying that would work (if the deal is not good for the dealership, they won't do it), but I could see people trying it.
As for unbelievably good deals - I think they can happen due to year end and other dealership incentives. I once got a truck for about $2500 under the dealers break even price, just because it put them over some sales incentive they needed to hit. The F&I guy kept saying "We're paying you to buy this truck!!!". And they were, as I figured out holdback, rebates, customer incentives, etc, etc, and the price I got didn't make sense other than for them to hit a sales target. This was one of those end of the fiscal year, late on a Friday type deals.
But we're talking about Toyotas and Hondas here (Odys and Siennas), and neither brands gives away the store like the domestics.
Based on the level of detail given and the fact that people who post here could be considered 'enthusiasts,' I'm inclined to believe a vast majority of their claims.
Funny how the new models bring out the new salespeople who suddenly want to participate and help out. Especially Honda ones.
Carguy1234, a shill or spammer would also have to create new email addresses for each login and multiple computers would have to be used to avoid showing up with different names using the same IP. There are a few safeguards built in to the system. Seems like way more trouble than it's worth.

I got an email quote and got the exact same price. Got the color my wife wanted. It was a great experience. I never thought buying a vehicle could be so pleasant.
Thanks to Edmunds for running such a great site. Thought I owed it to the discussion board.
(Are you a car salesman too?)
I don't buy the argument that people are fudging numbers. They may forget an incentive or trade-in now and then, but faking numbers wouldn't hold up to scrutiny.
I suppose we can start asking people to scan their contracts and link to them on-line.
I do wonder about the posts that say I paid $xxxxx.xx, did I get a good deal. The time to ask that is before you pay your money.

I do think Edmunds is a great site though. Was very helpful in getting me a good price on several vehicles. Like anything else...take what you read with a grain of salt.
But I agree with jipster for the reasons we both have cited.
I also agree that the vast majority are telling the truth. We just can't blindly accept it that ALL "Prices Paid" reflect reality.
That was my only point.
I negotiated a price down a Nordstrom one time; it's just money and all they can do is say no. No need to lie either.
Paying too much is my bias :-)

The 2005s aren't on the lots yet, so this weekend probably won't get much flexibility on the the few remaining '04s out there, but it's worth a try.
My worry would be now that the MSRP prices are leaking out on the '05s, there's a great difference between $25K and a touring near the $35K mark just for a different model year/design--it's not like the '04 Ody was a loser model or anything.
Good luck!
buying a 04 Odyssey EX RES in Atlanta area. Is $24731+++
a good enough price? I got this quote from a local dealership.
Is there anyone who would like to share with me their experiences? I learned that 05 Odyssey is on lots now.
So, I expected to get 25K OTD. Is this reasonable?
Need help from you, experts. Any information is greatly
appreciated! Thank you!!!
We also got them to add a wood kit.
My wife was 4 months pregnant and getting in and out of my 1999 Mercury Cougar was killing her.
My wife had her heart set on a Sienna, but I just couldn't justify paying up to 35,000 before taxes to justify getting all the features in the Honda. Plus, they didn't have any Sienna with the features we wanted in stock in our area.
The Siennas were selling like hotcakes no one wanted to go below MSRP. I didn't want to go over 30,000 dollars, but all the Toyota dealer would do was try to put me in a cheaper priced Sienna at full MSRP.
I also hated that the base Sienna didn't have disk brakes all the way around. The local Toyota dealer really wanted a sale, so they gave us a rental Sienna to keep us on the hook.
I drove the Senna right to the local Honda dealer. I am in a military town (Fayetteville, NC) so they routinely overcharge Joe (as in GI Joe).
However, By the grace of God I was pre approved by USAA, with an interest rate of 3.9%. With this in my hand and God's favor backing me up I went to the Honda dealership ready to deal.
The Honda had ABS, Traction Control, 4 wheel disk brakes, leather, DVD etc. The comparably priced Sienna was about 6,000.00 more before taxes! Plus, only the most expensive Sienna's had 4 wheel disk brakes and ABS!
My wife REALLY wanted a Sienna. But I couldn't see paying full MSRP for it, and they had none in stock with the features we wanted. We would have had to wait weeks or months to get the van.
Also, the 5 year old Honda was practically neck in neck with the brand new Sienna in every review I read (The Road and Track review with the Odyssey beating the Sienna came out after I bought the Odyssey).
The Sienna had more features...but I preferred the Honda's carlike ride and handling. The only features I have a problem with not having is the lack of a trip computer with outside temperature, no NAV system with the entertainment, and the quality of the stereo.
Overall, by God's grace I bought the best mini-van for the best price. Now my wife is mad because the 2005 Hondas are coming out....
If so, I would be interested in a referal to your dealer.
Thanx
Dick
I would certainly ask, and if it still bothers you, request some dealer-installed options for free or a discount. Like floor mats, fog lights, mudguards, etc. Or maybe 2-3 free oil changes.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to carefully check the vehicle prior to delivery. It is usually the worst time, as we are giddy with excitement, and exhausted by all the paperwork we just filed out. There are web sites with a checklist to go over before you take delivery.
I just looked at an 05 Touring and saw a deep scratch in the bumper. I pity the person who buys it without inspecting the entire vehicle, inside and out.
I got the EX-L RES package, with the 8 seat configuration for US$36K. From what I CAN see online, it looks like this is probably about $4K too much.
What I want to know, is this something I should expect on the brand new model, or was I just silly to sign on the dotted line?
In looking at this, one bummer is that Honda is no longer offering an Odyssey with just a NAVI option -- you must also get the RES DVD.
EX-L is a 5.5% increase to $28,510
EX-L is an 8% increase to $30,810
EX-L RES is an 8% increase to $32,410
plus the delivery charge has gone up to $515 from $490.
Honda had indicated prices increases of only 2.5-4 percent.
I know there are a lot more content and safety features, but with tax, licenses and fees, an EX-L is now closer to $34K OTD.
I wonder how many '00-'04 Odyssey owners will look at these higher prices and hang on to their cars a little longer, figuring they don't need to upgrade and pay a high price for a moonroof, VCM. rear roll-down windows and a split rear seat.
EX is a 5.5% increase to $28,510
On page D10 of September 16th, it says that Honda will be offering a $259 lease for two years, and dealers get $500 incentives to sell the Odyssey. While I'm not 100% sure, the statement appears to apply to the '05 model.
Pricing for other 2004 Odyssey:
EX $23288
EX W/DVD $23988
EXL $24688
EXL/DVD $25988
Good luck!
