Your example would be one of those that I would have placed in my second catagory.

That deal, while possible, made no sense.

I don't think "posturing" has anything to do with a manager's decision.

Who knows why they would have lost money on a popular car?
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
I wasn't asking you to ferret out the unbelievable from the believeable.....just asking you to show me ONE!

Most posts on the 'Prices Paid' board note when their deal included a trade--and seem to be fewer and far between.

And I still don't see why anyone would bother to exaggerate their deal. To what end? Bragging rights don't go very far when one's identity is anonymous....
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
You got THAT right. Salesmen always start out the conversation asking me how much I want for my trade [I usually sell privately]. They make me chuckle.....

I always say that all I care about is the difference I'll be paying. Compare wholesale to wholesale, or retail to retail. Doesn't matter to me, because I know I'm not willing to add, for example, more than $10,000 to my trade. So I don't care if they offer me $1 million for my trade, the new car had better not be more than $1,010,000.

The last time I hollared "foul" the host deleted my post and came down on me.

    So I'll let it go.

So I guess the two of you honestly don't believe that ANY of these prices have been false?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    Sorry I missed your post.

    No prices yet.
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
Please answer my question: Why would anybody bother to lie in this forum about what they paid, when there is nothing to gain by it, and all identities here are anonymous?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
As soon as the host sees your post, it'll get deleted. Can't use these forums to advertise.

I do agree with you on the new Odyssey. It FAR surpassed my expectations in every way!

I have no idea why people do certain things.

I do know there are always people who enjoy raining on someone else's parade if they get a chance.

OK Steve. You deleted my post for a few measly symbols that represent what you can easily hear during prime time TV any night of the week. How about deleting this advertisement?

    Ok, how about this scenario:

A person wants to buy a new vehicle. So he makes up a few screen names and starts posting false sales transactions that are all great deals on several car boards, and then prints them out and brings them in to present to the sales person and says, "I want the deal these people are getting".

I'm not saying that would work (if the deal is not good for the dealership, they won't do it), but I could see people trying it.

As for unbelievably good deals - I think they can happen due to year end and other dealership incentives. I once got a truck for about $2500 under the dealers break even price, just because it put them over some sales incentive they needed to hit. The F&I guy kept saying "We're paying you to buy this truck!!!". And they were, as I figured out holdback, rebates, customer incentives, etc, etc, and the price I got didn't make sense other than for them to hit a sales target. This was one of those end of the fiscal year, late on a Friday type deals.
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
    Well, maybe.

But we're talking about Toyotas and Hondas here (Odys and Siennas), and neither brands gives away the store like the domestics.

Based on the level of detail given and the fact that people who post here could be considered 'enthusiasts,' I'm inclined to believe a vast majority of their claims.

Give me time - I'm not on-line 24/7 and neither is Lee_W (it just seems like it, LOL).

Funny how the new models bring out the new salespeople who suddenly want to participate and help out. Especially Honda ones.

Carguy1234, a shill or spammer would also have to create new email addresses for each login and multiple computers would have to be used to avoid showing up with different names using the same IP. There are a few safeguards built in to the system. Seems like way more trouble than it's worth.

There is a lot of discussion here but not much price info. I bought an O4' Ody EX-RES for 24731 + fees + tax, today in Atlanta area. The total came out to be 26883. I think that is a decent price.
I got an email quote and got the exact same price. Got the color my wife wanted. It was a great experience. I never thought buying a vehicle could be so pleasant.
Thanks to Edmunds for running such a great site. Thought I owed it to the discussion board.

We leased a Ody in '01 from Vandergriff Honda in Arlington. LOVE the Ody, excited to look at the '05 when our lease expires next year. However, the buying experience was awful. We negotiated a 15K mile per year lease. When we recieved our paperwork from Honda Finance, I happened to read all the way through it in detail (which I normally don't do) and it referenced 12K per year. Obviously, I called and found out Vandergriff had taken the copy of the contract they submitted to Honda, crossed out 15K, wrote in 12K and then signed my initials. Thankfully, we had our copy of the contract, but I was shocked (I shouldn't be, I know) Anyway, since we have proof, they resolved it, which means there's really no recourse. But I wanted to make everyone aware of some of the tactics that are out there....

I too have often wondered about the truthfullness of some posters on the prices they reported to have paid. I have no doubt that many are either bogus or do not tell the complete story(i.e leaving out a low price they got for trade in) The question by heywood is why would anyone bother to lie about what they paid. I can think of many. Can you? I'm with isellhondas on this one.

(Are you a car salesman too?)
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,299
Heywood...no, I am not a car salesman. If you would have checked my profile and previous posts you would have seen I dislike car saleman as much as the next Joe(no offense isell)Do you really think only a car saleman could hold such a view? No offense, but you know little about human psychology. People lie to gain something. Respect, money, time, self esteem etc. Though people are anonymous when they make a post, they still have their identity & feelings. Unless, they are have a multiple personality or are pretending to be someone else. So, when someone writes I paid XXXXXX did I get a good deal? What do you think they are after? Someone to say they did good!Or, someone sees others have gotten a better deal than them...they don't want to feel lesser....so they fudge on the numbers a bit. I would say about 10%-20% of the posts in here are exaggerated to some degree. You yourself wrote in a previous post that you were "inclined to believe the vast majority of posts" That means you don't believe ALL posts to be true...right?Customers lie to salemen...salesmen lie to customers. And some Edmunds town hall members post bogus numbers.

I've read 1,000's of posts on Town Hall since 1998 (hundreds of 1,000's?) and the fake ones are very small in number. (Often it's a dealer posting as a satisfied customer!).

I don't buy the argument that people are fudging numbers. They may forget an incentive or trade-in now and then, but faking numbers wouldn't hold up to scrutiny.

I suppose we can start asking people to scan their contracts and link to them on-line.

I do wonder about the posts that say I paid $xxxxx.xx, did I get a good deal. The time to ask that is before you pay your money.

With all due respect Steve...you may be a bit biased on this matter. You know the old saying...never bite the hand that feeds you. : )
I do think Edmunds is a great site though. Was very helpful in getting me a good price on several vehicles. Like anything else...take what you read with a grain of salt.

I get accused of being biased too! :)

But I agree with jipster for the reasons we both have cited.

I also agree that the vast majority are telling the truth. We just can't blindly accept it that ALL "Prices Paid" reflect reality.

    That was my only point.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Pardon me, but if you aren't negotiating prices with your contractors, lawyers and dentists, you are probably paying too much. I have an old friend who's a dentist and he's taken all sort of things in trade for dental work.

I negotiated a price down a Nordstrom one time; it's just money and all they can do is say no. No need to lie either.

Paying too much is my bias :-)

I was reading the owner's manual and realized that the dealer did not give me the "Key Number" for my 04 Ody, which I will need if I ever need a replacement key. I called the dealer. He told me that All I need is the VIN number (he could not locate the key number anyway). Is this true? Anybody have experience on this? Thanks!

I'm turning to You, the experts. We are having twins soon, so the family is large enough for an Odyssey. I'm planning on buying one in the Philadelphia/NJ area this w-end. I'm thinking that the I should get an OK deal on a 2004 now that the 2005 is arriving next week. How much should I pay for an EX (incl leather and entertainment system). $25k ???? Do they offer any good finance rates? 3.9%.
  • montreidmontreid Member Posts: 127
I don't believe that you'll be able to get the EX-L with RES for $25k. I had to work pretty hard to get the EX-L for $25K, but then again, I live out here in San Fran country.

The 2005s aren't on the lots yet, so this weekend probably won't get much flexibility on the the few remaining '04s out there, but it's worth a try.

My worry would be now that the MSRP prices are leaking out on the '05s, there's a great difference between $25K and a touring near the $35K mark just for a different model year/design--it's not like the '04 Ody was a loser model or anything.

    Good luck!
  • dinky100dinky100 Member Posts: 21
I think that you might be able to get an EXL-res for maybe around 26k-- that is what I was quoted today in fact. The 05's hit the lot yesterday in my city. The only problem is finding an '04 EXL-res. They are hard to come by now.

I am getting 2nd baby and need a van now. We think of
buying a 04 Odyssey EX RES in Atlanta area. Is $24731+++
a good enough price? I got this quote from a local dealership.
Is there anyone who would like to share with me their experiences? I learned that 05 Odyssey is on lots now.
So, I expected to get 25K OTD. Is this reasonable?

Need help from you, experts. Any information is greatly
    appreciated! Thank you!!!

I paid 29,000 out the door for our 2004 Honda Odyssey with Leather and DVD Entertainment back in April.

We also got them to add a wood kit.

My wife was 4 months pregnant and getting in and out of my 1999 Mercury Cougar was killing her.

My wife had her heart set on a Sienna, but I just couldn't justify paying up to 35,000 before taxes to justify getting all the features in the Honda. Plus, they didn't have any Sienna with the features we wanted in stock in our area.

The Siennas were selling like hotcakes no one wanted to go below MSRP. I didn't want to go over 30,000 dollars, but all the Toyota dealer would do was try to put me in a cheaper priced Sienna at full MSRP.

I also hated that the base Sienna didn't have disk brakes all the way around. The local Toyota dealer really wanted a sale, so they gave us a rental Sienna to keep us on the hook.

I drove the Senna right to the local Honda dealer. I am in a military town (Fayetteville, NC) so they routinely overcharge Joe (as in GI Joe).

However, By the grace of God I was pre approved by USAA, with an interest rate of 3.9%. With this in my hand and God's favor backing me up I went to the Honda dealership ready to deal.

The Honda had ABS, Traction Control, 4 wheel disk brakes, leather, DVD etc. The comparably priced Sienna was about 6,000.00 more before taxes! Plus, only the most expensive Sienna's had 4 wheel disk brakes and ABS!

My wife REALLY wanted a Sienna. But I couldn't see paying full MSRP for it, and they had none in stock with the features we wanted. We would have had to wait weeks or months to get the van.

Also, the 5 year old Honda was practically neck in neck with the brand new Sienna in every review I read (The Road and Track review with the Odyssey beating the Sienna came out after I bought the Odyssey).

The Sienna had more features...but I preferred the Honda's carlike ride and handling. The only features I have a problem with not having is the lack of a trip computer with outside temperature, no NAV system with the entertainment, and the quality of the stereo.

Overall, by God's grace I bought the best mini-van for the best price. Now my wife is mad because the 2005 Hondas are coming out....

$26883 sounds pretty good.......doesn't an EX-L with Nav list for about the same?

If so, I would be interested in a referal to your dealer.

    Thanx

Just test drove the '05 Touring model. It was the only model that was available at this particular dealer. It handles well and is bit more upscale than the outgoing model. The $35,000+ pricetag blew me away. No navigation or DVD. Is the EX-L available with both the nav/dvd? If so, what is the cost?
  • charlie3charlie3 Member Posts: 2
i just picked up my 04 odyssey - EX leather todayfor $25,000 + tax + fee for a total OTD price of $26,689. I thought i did OK until i arrived home, looking at the odometer statement and realized that it has 200 miles rather than 20 as I thought i had when i signed the paper. It appears that the van was probably used for test drive by the dealer. The saleman never mentioned this to me. I felt like i had been had. All the paper listed this as a new car. Does a car has 200 miles on it can still be listed as new ? The disclosure statement has either new, used and demo as choices. Do i have any recourse to get a better price from the dealer ? Does the saleman has the obligation to tell me about the car was used as a test car by the dealership ? I negotiated the whole deal using emails and signed the sale contract and faxed it back to them. The sale contract specified that it is for a new odyssey. I'd appreciate if anyone can give me their opinions on this matter. thank you
  • kixokixo Member Posts: 35
The 200 miles may be because it was a "dealer pull." If you were very specific about colors and options, and if the dealer did not have it in its inventory, then it probably traded it from another dealer. The mileage was put on when it was driven from the other dealer.

I would certainly ask, and if it still bothers you, request some dealer-installed options for free or a discount. Like floor mats, fog lights, mudguards, etc. Or maybe 2-3 free oil changes.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to carefully check the vehicle prior to delivery. It is usually the worst time, as we are giddy with excitement, and exhausted by all the paperwork we just filed out. There are web sites with a checklist to go over before you take delivery.

I just looked at an 05 Touring and saw a deep scratch in the bumper. I pity the person who buys it without inspecting the entire vehicle, inside and out.

Hi everyone. Today I was was quoted a $23,052 price on a 2004 Ody LX. I live in Tacoma, WA and I am wondering if this is reasonable. The prices Edmunds lists for this year and model is $24,490 MSRP and $22,038 Invoice. However, with the 2005's arriving, is this midway quote a reasonable amount, or should I aim for the Invoice price? Thanks for your opinions.

I purchased a 2005 Honda Odyssey, this weekend, and given that they are so new there is practically NO pricing information available. I am concerned now that I paid too much.

I got the EX-L RES package, with the 8 seat configuration for US$36K. From what I CAN see online, it looks like this is probably about $4K too much.

What I want to know, is this something I should expect on the brand new model, or was I just silly to sign on the dotted line?
  • sharondensharonden Member Posts: 7
I really wouldn't worry about it. I think you're probably right, someone test drove the van before you did, or a salesman drove it from another dealership, etc. 200 miles would not really bother me. As I understand, the car is technically sold as "new" until someone titles the vehicle. I've had two different dealers try to sell me "new" cars in which one had 2,500 miles and the other had 12,500 miles- and neither of them thought it was important enough a matter to mention until I looked at the odometer, then when I expressed my surprise, they tried to make little of it and say that it was still a new car. If the 200 miles does bother you, I would suggest you make a polite call to the salesman, tell him or her it bothers you and ask if they can give you a free oil change or something. But really, I think 200 miles is nothing. You would probably put well more than that on a rental van in one day, and that would not cost you too much. That might be somewhat of a comparison at how much, if any, the 200 miles decreases the value of the van. I am surprised your insurance company didn't ask you what the mileage was on the van when you called to insure it. That would have brought it to your attention before you drove off the lot. But I'm not sure if everyone calls to insure their vehicles before they drive off the lot like I try to do.
  • kixokixo Member Posts: 35
You can get an EX-L with RES or RES/NAVI, or a Touring with RES/NAVI. An EX-L with RES is $32410 MSRP, so figure another $1800-$2000 or so for the RES/NAVI model. The difference between an 04 EX-L and EX-L navi was exactly $2000.

In looking at this, one bummer is that Honda is no longer offering an Odyssey with just a NAVI option -- you must also get the RES DVD.

Congrats on your new Ody! Enjoy the van in a year, you will not even recall the price you paid. As long as this was a price you could afford no problem. The dealer got the edge on you...this weekend however you're not alone.
  • 4thcar4thcar Member Posts: 7
I got my 04 Ody EX-RES two weeks ago. It got 250 miles on it (they had to swap with another dealer so the 250 miles is probably test drive plus the distance between the two dealers). The saleman let me know the 250 miles but would not give me any discount. I like the color and it's the last one so I took it. I felt I did not get a brand new car at the begining. But there is really nothing wrong and I have been enjoying it so far. Hope you will enjoy yours!

I'm a little shocked that Honda raised its prices so much over the '04 Odysseys. For example:

    EX-L is a 5.5% increase to $28,510
    EX-L is an 8% increase to $30,810
EX-L RES is an 8% increase to $32,410

plus the delivery charge has gone up to $515 from $490.

Honda had indicated prices increases of only 2.5-4 percent.

I know there are a lot more content and safety features, but with tax, licenses and fees, an EX-L is now closer to $34K OTD.

I wonder how many '00-'04 Odyssey owners will look at these higher prices and hang on to their cars a little longer, figuring they don't need to upgrade and pay a high price for a moonroof, VCM. rear roll-down windows and a split rear seat.
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
As I said previously, the 'value' argument against the Sienna has been mitigated considerably by these substantial price increases of the '05 Odyssey. I presented a scenario in a previous post where the street price of a Sienna XLE AWD w/Pkg 17 is only $800 more than a FWD Odyssey EX-L with RES at MSRP.
  • kixokixo Member Posts: 35
sorry, typo in first price, should be

    FYI.........

On page D10 of September 16th, it says that Honda will be offering a $259 lease for two years, and dealers get $500 incentives to sell the Odyssey. While I'm not 100% sure, the statement appears to apply to the '05 model.
  • hpanhpan Member Posts: 61
Try $20,988, which was offered in Northern California until Sep. 7 when the $500 Honda to dealer cash back was supposed to expire.

    Pricing for other 2004 Odyssey:
    EX $23288
    EX W/DVD $23988
    EXL $24688
    EXL/DVD $25988

    Good luck!
  • charlie3charlie3 Member Posts: 2
Thanks for all your inputs. After reading about the "dealer pull", i looked closer at my sticker, and found the van was pulled from Hersey, PA, which is 2 1/2 hours drive from Freehold, NJ, where i bought my van. That accounts for most of the miles. Now i felt much better. I guess it was just the idea that i thought i was had by a dishonest salesman that bothers me more than the 200 miles on it. Also i would not feel like i have a new car if it had been used as a "test-drive" vehicle by many people.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Probably just lazy. He either guessed at the miles or he read the 200 as 20.
