I’m forced to agree with the responses and now am better informed that my wife and I must have purchased a “port-damaged” Ody. The only reason to title it before us would have been to fix damage to the car so that it could be re-sold. My wife and I were told that we were buying some kind of promotional vehicle, but if that were the case, the vehicle would have been sold as a brand new car or as a demo vehicle and there would have been no good reason to title it as a new car before selling it to us as “used.”
Unfortunately, I do not have the time or the inclination to try to get satisfaction from the dealership. The relevant paperwork says it’s a used car, nothing else given to us referred to it as a “new” car, and ultimately it’s he said/she said or our word against theirs. I don’t think I would get much sympathy from the manufacturer with these facts, either. We’ve put just over 2K miles on the Ody so far and are pleased with it. Whatever damage there was seems to have been repaired. The color is midnight blue and the only thing I’ve noticed so far is that the deep shine or buffed texture, but not the color, on certain car panels appears slightly different under bright sunlight. Even if certain car parts had been replaced and there were different VIN numbers, it’s still the sale of a used, and not a brand new, car. I don’t think I would sleep better if the dealer offered to replace this Ody with a truly equivalent brand new 2004 Ody, because the brand new one might have problems.
What have I learned from this experience? If you think you’re buying a new car and the paperwork says “used,” ask for all of your signed paperwork back, tear it up, and walk away from the table. Then either ask for more information about why the vehicle is being sold as “used” and renegotiate the deal or find another dealership.

You are either very niave or very honest. I hope the latter. You certainly must have no idea of how intimitdated and uncomfortable most consumers are in a car dealership. Intimidated consumers are easily manipulated.

Spoken like a true car salesman. Heaven forbid a consumer might have actually have the upper hand.
Again this was done by a 3 year veteran of a 35year old dealership with 350 new cars on the lot from GM, Isuzu and Honda. I just have a real problem with a mistake of this magnitude just all the sudden happening. What exactly am I supposed to think when I ask for verification multiple times and he replies? I did ask him, "Are you sure this is EX pricing?" To which he replied "Yes." Can't get much clearer than that.
I guess I don't know why you are so upset. You caught their dirty trick and left as you should have. Time to move on. Try asking family and friends for a referral.
Jump on it without a second thought if it's the vehicle you want and keep us posted.
The second was decidely bad and I was never sure if it was the salesman or management (or both) that was responsbile for the problem.
While I'm glad to hear about a transaction that went smoothly there, I won't do business with any of their stores in Central Ohio.
They are great to work with-No Games, no
trying to "Con" people.
Can't wait to pick up my Odyssey Touring,
the excitement is brewing.
Local dealers are stupid. Once people do a little research
on sites like Edmunds, we can save thousands by refusing
to cave in to Dealers who don't do the right thing.
Now with more and more people on the Internet doing research, these "bad" dealers will be hurting.
Since I will tell 2 people about how bad "Hall Honda" is,
and how good Duncan Honda is to work with, and they will tell 2 people, and so on and so on!
Are these EXs so high in demand that dealers can't keep them on the lots? Or do they order more tourings to upsell folks?
This experience was in the Denver area. If these things are in such high demand, I'm wondering if I'll ever get a decent deal on one.
Any information would be appreciated!
got it at around $1300 above the invoice.
Thanks EDMUNDS.COM
A waiting list??? That's a riot! Do yourself a favor and buy outside the DC area. You can buy Ody for $2,000-$3,000 under MSRP by driving 2-3 hours away.
I guess I have a little belief now that salesmen are pro-customer that they are there to present your best offer.
Again Thanks Edmunds.com, I won't have got it at this excellent $35450 O.T.D. price for a '05 Odyssey EXL w/ NAV&DVD plus mud guards and crossbars if not for you.
This usually means the price of the car + tax + lic + document fees.
Go to www.honda.com and select build / price
select the trim (ex-l) and options you want.
best of luck.....
Most local CT dealers quoted right around MSRP or MSRP less destination ($515), and of course asked me to give them a chance to match or beat any better deal. This was in reply to my clearly stating upfront that I will sign a Purchase Agreement within two weeks and that I respectfully request their best offer.
Buying from Bedard was very easy and the entire transaction and delivery went very smoothly. I would recommend Bedard if you're able to travel to pick up the van. They are a top-shelf dealership and care about the customer and your experience.
My only complaint is a questionable paint job on the drivers side sliding door, which I did not notice during inspection at pickup, but which is apparent in lesser light. It looks like a pattern was dried into the paint, leaving what looks like a couple of streaks. It's definitely under the topcoat. I'll follow up on this, but it's not going to be a deal-killer. The Ody is great--fun to drive and (so far) no other concerns or complaints.
I was also at Power Honda in Valencia and their last price was $35900 OTD for silver '05 EXL w/NAV&DVD with mud guards, wheel locks and cargo tray and at Miller Honda in Culver City at the same package for $36000 OTD. But mind is much better deal bec. of the $35450 OTD with mudguards and more expensive crossbars than wheel locks and cargo tray.
As you know, when you go to any Honda dealer they will make you like an idiot buyer saying it "Odyssey is high demand and it's low production, mark-up of $2-3K, best minivan, best resale value etc.". Just be firm with the $1000 to $1300 above the invoice price and you'll get it. Actually I should have gotten it a little lower if not those add-ons accessories by dealer to make more money and also don't forget your blank or draft check to make them think you're really a serious buyer.
Good Luck.
This usually means the price of the car + tax + lic + document fees.
With that deal, I can buy new wheels when PAX is a bust. I plan to buy a donut spare ($50 for the wheel, $50 for the tire) and keep it in the lazy susan area. It will fit. I measured.
I am a big time PAX detractor. I think it is a big bust. But I can buy new OEM wheels for $177 each if I want, or get some nice aftermarket ones. With the price on the van, I have a good bit of flexibility.
Here's to hoping this van will be as good as my 1999 Ody has been.
which can give below MSRP
Thanks
$32425 OTD
$29558 price
$395 Perma Plate (is that a scam?)
$2174 tax
$253 fees
$45 doc prep
4.25 for 60 mos
The best deal I could find in the area.
In general what are the other charges and what it will be.
Like I like to know the tax , DMV charges ..etc
What is 45$
yes- dmv and tax. sales tax in ventura county is 7.25%.
$45 is doc prep.
The 04 is still a great van--even better with an additional $500 savings. I was quoted invoice for an 04 EX-cloth, before I even brought up the incentive.
We got going from there and dropped off the rental in Pittsfield and drove to NJ. The drive is absolutely a breeze. Voice recognition is taking some time for both of us. The van and me :-) I am reading up on the manual right now. A lot of information. The hills of PA was no problem. 255 horses were having a good time!
I think that this is the best way to buy a vehicle. I dreaded each visit to a dealership. Did not want to talk to them. They tend to think that I have no idea about the cost or the invoice pricing.
It appears to be the most highly sought version.
$2000 under invoice would probably be a great deal right now.
Good luck.
After reading messages #7099 & #7111, I contacted Duncan Honda in Christiansburg, VA. We live a little north of Knoxville, TN but enjoy traveling in Virginia area so we were willing to travel there. They called me and gave me a quote of $32,650 (including the $515 Destination charge) plus the $199 Dealer Processing Charge for total of $32,849 which was not as good as the quotes in the previous mentioned messages. I was told they probably ordered before demand was so high. Anyway, I thought that was still a good price. I also am trading in an '04 Odyssey EX Cloth with 22,600 miles, but in VERY GOOD condition - no kids, no stains, no body damage other than 2 small dings in passenger sliding door, with no paint damage. The best Duncan could promise me for trade-in was "Good" condition price on Kelley Blue Book for their zip code, which was $19,260. ("Good" for my zip code is $19,805.) I wanted at least $20,000. Duncan might have increased the trade-in amount once they saw the vehicle, and they were willing to give me free tank of gas for my trouble if I was willing to come up there but decided not to buy. (FYI - When I requested the quote on the Duncan web site, I also got a response from a dealer in Connecticut. Duncan is checking on that.)
I took the $32,849 offer to Rusty Wallace Honda, the dealer I bought the '04 from. I have had a good experience with the service department there. It is very convenient for me because I pass the dealership every day when I go to work, and they have a free loaner car for their buyers anytime the car is brought in for service, so I wanted to give them first chance to meet the Duncan price, although after the haggling over the '04 purchased last year, I really didn't expect them to meet the Duncan price.
I went in Friday afternoon and told them I didn't want to haggle and I had a price they would need to meet. I gave them the $32,849 price and they agreed to meet it. They also gave me $20,050 for my trade-in, so I was pretty happy with the deal. They did not have any Tourings on the lot so they called around and found me one in my first choice color of SageBrush Green - which I had not actually seen in person before and found out when it was delivered that it is not really green, but to me looks like a dark gray with some blue/green tones, which is fine. The van came with Splash Guards for free. The only thing I forgot to check on was any other fees, and did not realize until after I got home with the paperwork that they had added a "Customer Services" fee of $299. I asked about that fee when I went to pick up the van the next day and was told that included the loaner car. I still felt like I got a decent deal. I had planned to finance using my credit union, but they were able to beat that rate, so we financed for 48 months at 3.29%.
When I called Duncan Honda back, they offered to check on improving their deal, but I had already decided to go with Rusty Wallace. I also checked online with another dealer in this area, Airport Honda in Alcoa, Tennessee. They quoted a price of $33,500 for their Tourings w/o DVD/NAV and had a demo Touring with 3,000 miles and a 9" Audiovox DVD for $33,900 but I did not follow up.
This site has been a lot of help. I want to thank everyone for their input. Now I just have to figure out all those buttons and customized settings!
FYI - I also asked about a refund on the Extended Warranty if the car is traded in before the warranty expires, and was told it would be pro-rated based on the warranty, even if traded prior to 3year/36,000 original warranty.
After some investigation, I went back and cancelled the Perma Plate.
EXL or Touring-NAV/DVD $ 2000 off MSRP
Picked up Touring.
Everything they said, was true, great dealer, and after dealing with a dealership as bad as Hall Honda, what a treat.
The Touring model with the chrome, fog lights, Run Flat Wheel,(Bigger), parking sensors, 115 Volt outlet, Power Lift gate, what more can I say.
Didn't think the NAV or DVD was worth the price. I can buy DVD for several hundred dollars, and then take it with me, so the price was too prohibitive.
I can buy Extended Warranty for several hundred dollars from my insurance company, versus several thousand from a Honda Salesperson, so why bother.
So for 500 over invoice I can get a Touring that is pretty loaded, versus an EXL at MSRP.
Anyway, truly great dealership.
If you buy there make sure you deal with the Internet Manager, not sales department, and you will get a great deal.
Duncan Hokie Honda, Christiansburg, VA 1/2 south of Roanoke, right off RT 81.
Great price, great service, no BS.
However, there has to be somebody out there that is eager enough to want to do the business. Look at the folks at Bedard Brothers, Duncan Honda, and Fletcher Honda and the like. They all took the elite move and took the business. Are there other dealers who will come forward and make the same offer or better yet beat the original offers? I also heard a strange rumor regarding these aggressive offers handed by dealers from AHM corporate. The rumor was that corporate frowns on dealers presenting these types of offers such as $500.00 and $950.00 over invoice and etc. It is also rumored the best pricing AHM corporate will allow is $1500.00 over invoice on their most sought after version (Touring N/R).
Have you heard of this rumor?
Sorry for the delay in my response (busy holiday).
Price on my EXL NAV,RES & Mud Guards from The Honda Store:
$32,125
27 Records fee
100 Documentation fee
2284 Tax and Title
$34,536 Total
I requested mid Jan delivery, which delighted the Internet Sales Manager because the EXL with R&N is in high demand at this time. Once we take delivery I'll let you know how the transaction went.
I read your many messages and am glad that you got a good deal from Beddard. I have researched Sienna and Ody '05, and have finally decided to go with Ody. FYI, I am going to go with EX-L with RES (midnight pearl exterior). To get a feel for the prices I went to a delaer close by, Planet Honda-Union, and the salesman was a "crook". He gave me a story about how hot these vans were and the Dec cut in prod'n and then finally said price of MSRP+3to5K. This is so much higher than prices I have observed here. I have a few qns for you, if you do not mind.
1. Is bedard still offering 950 over invoice + 50 doc fee?
2. Is bedard still the best bet, or should i try other nj/ny dealers. do i use edmunds to locate these dealers or honda site?
3. what is the delaer holdup fee you mentioned in your message.
4. What is the breakup of the total price you paid? FYI, sales tax in NJ is 6%.
5. What accessories did bedard throw in (crossbars for roofrack, splash guards, etc).
Thanks and sorry for so many qns, but you seem so well informed.
vancurious
Price wise, they are simply the best in South Florida. If you are looking to buy Honda Odyssey or any Honda, give a try
FWIW, I wandered the back lot at the local Hoda dealer (outside Phila. in NJ, probably the biggest volume dealer in the area). Anyway, with the 2 out front (able to demo), one in the showroom, and 2 rows in the holding pen (plus a few others strewn about, sold I think), they had approx. 20-25 9at least) sitting there available.
I didn't try to inventory the models, but they had some higher and lower end ones, in a variety of colors.
I didn't bother to try, but I'm sure that you could have walked in and made a reasonable deal on one of the in stock units.
Actually, at 4:00 Saturday, that place seemed packed. Customers at every desk it seemed.
