The Red Rock Pearl Touring with NAV/RES that I special ordered last month from Poway Honda arrived yesterday. This may be the very first one of these models to arrive anywhere in San Diego.

The sales manager expected to sell it to me for MSRP plus $290 for splash guards and wheel locks. I told him I would pay $500 under MSRP, and he didn't argue with me except that he didn't offer to include the splash guard and wheel locks, and so I ended up paying $210 under MSRP.

I wanted them to throw in a cargo net and cargo tray, but they said I could come to the parts department the next day (it was already closed) and negotiate with them. I later found a cargo net in the back of the vehicle; I don't know if it's standard or if somebody put it there.

The best rate I had found was 4.59% from USAA Federal Savings Bank, but the dealer offered American Honda financing at 4.24% for 60 months, and so I took that. The sales manager said that was the best rate they offered and that you needed a FICO score of 720 or higher to qualify for it.

Before I even looked at the vehicle I told the general sales manager (I had been dealing with him directly because I had had so much trouble getting in touch with a sales person) that I knew some of the '05 Odysseys had trouble with rust on seat hinges, wind noise at freeway speeds, and lower back pain in the driver's seat. He hadn't heard of any of those problems, but one of his people had heard about the rust and said they had seen it on one Odyssey to date. We didn't see any rust on mine.

I test drove the vehicle at freeway speeds and didn't notice any wind noise. I wasn't even thinking about the back pain question when I noticed that my lower back was starting to feel uncomfortable. I have never had any lower back problems until that moment.

I told the sales manager about it. He denied any knowledge of back pain problems with Odysseys. I told him what I had read here, namely, that one or more people had taken their Odyssey to an upholstery shop and that had fixed the problem. He insisted that his dealership would would have no involvement with any change in the seat upholstery and that I was completely on my own in trying to get this "problem" fixed. I asked him if he could refer me to an upholsterer, and he said he was not allowed because of state law. He was clearly saying, "take it or leave it."

So far I've driven the vehicle for about 40 minutes, most of that on freeways. The only problem I have had is that the driver's door doesn't completely close unless I use more force than I normally would. Once or twice I had to close it so hard that one of the glove compartments popped open. I expect the dealer will fix that problem.

That Sales Manager hadn't heard of these problems. I haven't heard of them either except in these forums.

What affects a few people, like back pain for example may not affect the masses. I've heard no complaints either except in this forum.

On the way back I could just not be comfortable with the van. I did drive for about an hour or so on the second day but I gave it up to my husband for the rest of the trip(5 hours). Nothing I did made me comfortable. But now after driving the van around for about a week, I have adjusted the seat and the steering wheel to exactly the spot I am comfortable with. Now it is a breeze. I love the fact that we have memory seating. Give it some time. With so many slight changes in angle it will take a little while longer to get to the one position that is perfect.

    Good Luck

If anybody is in the market for an Ody withOUT Navi call them. They say that Honda underestimated the Navi demand and do not seem to be increasing the quantity of those. So if you want a regular van call Bedard and see what they can do for you.
  • aleale Member Posts: 16
TRied to contact Bedard but never received a reply, do have to call or see them in person, I was trying to contact them via internet. Thanks

I did everything through email. Did you go to their website and send them an email? Hmmm... Give them a couple of days. Maybe they have too many customers :-)

Please inspect your new potential purchase. We were caught in the Honda Hype (don't get me wrong, we love our Hondas) and purchased our new Ody even tho it had lot damage. It was put on the Due Bill and we just felt safe with all their reassurances that it would be repaired to look like new. HUGE MISTAKE! Not only did their body shop do a half a** job, the dealership didn't look it over or thought it was just fine to give back to us. No quality control at all.
I know that not all dealerships are like this and I know that not all bodyshops are sloppy. If anyone is shopping for that beautiful, "scarce" Ody, be careful. Especially if you are shopping at Norm Reeves Honda Superstore in Cerritos, California. Better yet, do yourselves a favor and walk away if it's got lot damage.

Did you mean EX or LX? If this is an EX, that's a great price. The invoice on the EX is $25,500. You got it under invoice. Can you disclose the dealership name? Thanks.
  • ezuckerezucker Member Posts: 34
I believe that the cargo net is standard equipment on the Touring. I assume my dealer did not know that.

Something else they did not know is that once the parking assist is turned on it stays on even after you turn off the engine and start it up again. They had told me you have to turn on the parking assist every time you restart the car.

I don't mind this type of error because there are an awful lot of features on the Touring and there is a learning curve even for dealers. However, I was annoyed that the dealer was prepared to sell me a cargo net.

I went back to the parts department at Poway Honda today and told them that after buying a $39,000 car the sales manager wouldn't throw in a cargo tray. She said, "You're kidding." I asked her what kind of deal she could make for me, and she offered to sell it to me for $75, which I thought was reasonable since it lists for $109 and sells on the Internet for $83.

I notice that the cargo tray is more flimsy than the one I have for my 2000 Odyssey.
  • michaelamichaela Member Posts: 12
Can you disclose the name of the dealership? At $26,200, this is still an excellent deal. It works out to be around $500 + invoice. The extra stuff actually costs the dealer only $80. But still a very good deal!!! Congratulations to your nephew.

Documentation Fee should be $50 max I.M.O. That is what i paid at toyota but I had to be firm to get it along with my $200 over invoice deal (Camery with no rebates at the time).

You can get $700 over invoice on 2005 Odyssey's w/o DVD and $1000 w/ dvd's no haggle. Doc fees are $100. So if you want to haggle I say $500 with $50 doc fee is possible. Of course I am going for $300 over invoice and $50 doc since the same dealer say he does 300 over invoice for pilots and they are just as hot as Odysseys.

Jay Toyota in Cleveland Ohio. See e-bay for the $700 deal over invoice.

In Ohio "doc fees" were limited to $50.00 by law until September 2003 when our General Assembly (apparently not having anything better to do) raised the limit to $100.00.

Please let us know how things work out with Jay.

    Good news!
The prices in the bay area are coming down. Dont trust the dealers. Its Christmas time, tho Hondas sell like hot cakes, December is a dull month. Cash in on this!

I had 3 dealers quoting 1000 off MSRP without even having to haggle. I haggled with one of them & have brought it down to 29,500 ($1310 off MSRP).

I havent bought one yet since the colors available are not to my liking. They are getting 3 more vans next week & hopefully i'll get my price & the color. I'm gonna push for 1500 off MSRP if its not my first choice color.

The minimum I would go for is $1,800 off. I would tell them I can buy it in Ohio (or try Alabama) for 2,800 off and ship it for 1,000 therefore give me 1,800 off and you get the sale.

Can someone post more details on the complexities in an out of state deal ?
    Has anyone done this ?

I agrea with you that December is a dull month, everyone focusing on Christmas and all. Would you mind providing the dealers that gave you the quotes. I am in the bay area and I am ready to buy. We have a new baby and things are tight, both in the car and in the wallet. I spoke with one dealer last week and he was giving me a hard time to take money off the EXL.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,556
Somebody is buying them. I got a call from the salesguy at my local dealer that an EX-L in the colors we want came in (I think Tuesday), but it sold on Friday, before we could scope it out.

Supply overall must be doing oK though. I just got a message from the dealer where I have a deposit (out of state) that our van should be produced in Jan, and be to them mid-late January. Hopefully they don't make it the first day after the holiday break!

Original estimate from when I ordered (mid-nov.) was up to the end of February, so this is earlier than expected.

Contact dealers in & around the bay area such as Southbay honda, Selma Honda, Honda in Davis etc.

Dealers located in the heart of the city hardly come down on pricing

What should be the fair/good price before tax for Odyssey '05 EXL-RES-NAV in the bay area San Jose California 95132 zip code area? I've dealed with one dealer in the bay area Anderson Honda, they willing to have $1000 off from MSRP which is $33610, Is this good to go for this price? Any recommandation, place to buy? Thanks for any reply.
  • boomzerboomzer Member Posts: 37
Just received a call from the Sales Manager, they received confirmation my Midnight Blue Touring with Nav will be ready by the end of Jan or Early Feb. This based on an order of mid Nov. Everything as planned @ $950 over invoice. The Sales Manager indicated that I should let anyone who wants a plain Touring to call them for a good deal. As everybody has indicated, with Nav, the deals are not as good, but without, a deal can be had.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
He said it was Willey Honda in Bountiful, Utah (a suburb of Salt Lake City). I have not seen his paperwork and will remain skeptical until I actually see the numbers with my own eyes even though I can not understand why he would tell me a wild story.
  • ecarmackecarmack Member Posts: 161
I picked up the van today (which is awesome) at The Honda Store. The numbers were exactly as agreed upon. The internet manager actually picked me up at the Akron airport. No pressure from the finance department. I was extremely happy with the entire process, and would highly recommend this dealership. Unfortunately, I had to go straight to work in Cleveland, so I didn't get to put many miles on the van. I'm looking forward to the drive home.

As a side note for anyone in Indianapolis, Penske sent out an email at the end of November for $1,000 over invoice on any in-stock 05 Odyssey. I spoke with a helpful individual there who said the aggressive pricing would continue this month. I was surprised to see that so soon in Indy.

    Good luck everyone.

    Hello, Tennessee -
Knoxville TN dealers are selling below MSRP. See my posting #7207. The new Odyssey is great.
I got my plain Touring for $2,161 below MSRP plus $299 Fee plus Taxes, Title, Tag. You can probably do better if you haggle a little. (Of course, I also had a 2004 in very good condition to trade in, so that may have affected the price).
Rusty Wallace Honda had several EX-L's when I bought mine 10 days ago.

The Memphis area is finally coming off of MSRP as well. I received an email quote for $1000 off MSRP for an EXL-RES w/out even trying.

With all the "sticker price only" option in NJ/NY, i tried my luck with Route 23 Honda. I scheduled a test drive just so i can get a feel of it and didn't really expect to buy since i'm one of those not paying Retail for anything. Test drive went well and the one in charge of internet sales started talking numbers. I told him i'll buy it for $2000-off which is rather impossible in this area. He presented it to the manager and I got the EXL with Fog lights installed for $29300 + TTL ($31,100 MSRP.) Total experience was very pleasant, even financing went well with 5.04% (surprising since i don't have stellar credit) and drove it the following night. Overall, I highly recomment them.

I recently purchased a Ocean Mist EX-L RES from Herb Chambers Honda in Boston MA. My wife and I had someone negotiate the deal for us so I can't give too much detail on how he got the price he did. We got the van for Invoice plus 700. Upon getting the price we expected to wait for a few months based on this discussion board. We picked it up on 12/6. We signed the papers on 11/30. During the signing process they mentioned that the car had to be paid for by the end of the month. So it is true about getting good deals at month end.
I've only had it for a day but so far so good. Ocean Mist looks pretty good.
Overall buying experience was good. There were no tricks etc.
    Prices paid:
    Invoice incl. dest 29,022
                                 700
    7/75K ext warranty 903
    Tire warranty 5 yrs 299
    Simoniz paint warranty 5yrs 199

    Cash 500
    Trade 9000
    (1999 Toy 4Runner SR5)
    slightly banged up 52K miles
    5% state tax @1000
    assorted reg/dealer fees 350

fees were reasonable. I could do without the warranties but my wife wanted them. The 7/75 was negotiated down from 1200.

Thanks to Edmunds and all posters and good luck.

I purchased an EX cloth over the weekend from Robertson Honda in No. Hollywood. I got a sampling of quotes from LA county, Riverside county, and San Diego county dealers. I found that San Diego county dealers are the ones with the higher prices and the least flexible. I am from San Diego but decided to drive up to LA to get the better deal. In doing so, I saved about $1500. I concur with previous posts that in many areas of CA you negotiate from MSRP not from invoice.

    Price 27124.85
    Doc Fee 45.00
    CA Sales Tax 2105.66
    License Fee 229.00
    CA Tire Fee 5.00
                ---------
                 29509.51 out the door

I got the dealer to throw in the splash guards and cross bars. I think they retail for $300 total.

Sad, but CA in general makes as much profit if not more on a car sale than the dealers themselves.

For the premium I paid above, I got to pick up my wife and our 2nd child from the hospital in a brand new Ody and impress my in-laws while they're visiting from a foreign country where Odys are rare. Aren't these worth a few hundred dollars?

Why is that no matter which dealership (Toyota, Honda etc) I email a question about inventory and pricing they ALWAYS refuse to divulge anything via email and force you to speak with them on the phone and then come in. What the heck is the point of having internet sales departments if they force to do everything in person (which is quite difficult if you have very young children).

    Annoying!

I have bought 4 new vehicles over the internet in the past 4 years (Chrysler, Chevrolet, Mazda, and Pontiac) and, while some have played the games you have described, most have not.

In my experience, they respond one of three ways. You have described one. Another is simply no response. I never have figured that out - what is the point of having an internet department if you don't even utilize it on leads?

The third is a straight, no-nonsense firm price reply which, in my experience, happens with the same frequency as the other two types combined.

I am interested in buying a Odyssey EX. Where can I get $500 over invoice?

    Thanks in advance,
  • sonnatsonnat Member Posts: 1
Interesting. I had a similar experience at a dealer in Chicago suburbs(Rossen Honda). I used as a guide posted earlier in this forum to offer a price to buy right away (reference posting: "just bought an '05 EXL w/NAV&DVD plus mudguards and crossbars for $35450 O.T.D...in CA" and not IL). The answer came back from the above dealer, to stop wasting their time - the price is non-negotiable (MSRP price was quoted) and that they are sold out till Jan. (even on Touring which I offered as an alternate). They implied that California market is different (more affordable from a buyer's perspective) than IL - so they are not interested. That's hard to believe considering its Southern Cal!
Not a big deal personally - I'm sure there's other dealers in the Chicago area who may be interested in selling a minivan.

'05 EXL w/NAV&DVD $1000 off from MSRP from Northern CA, Santa Clara County. Is this a good price or what? Any other dealers in the bay have better price? Thanks.

I offered a dealer 27,750 (200 over) for an 2005 Ocean Mist EX-L including all documentation and title fees and got an acceptance via e-mail. Their e-mail said "since we have an Ocean Mist
EX-L in stock we can accept your offer". One hour later I got an e-mail saying they made a mistake and thought my offer of 27,750 was for an EX. They wanted about $1000 more. I didn't accept.

Last year I bought a toyota camery on-line and when they quoted me they forgot to add in the dollars for one of the options but their description said it was included. I knew it wasn't in the total since my deal was $200 over and I knew what the total should be. I ended up getting the option for about $100 less than its invoice value. So the final deal was about $100 over invoice. Of course the deal took about an additional 6 phone calls and I had to be firm.

I am beginning to wounder if this misquoting is done on purpose.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I quote construction projects for a living. If I quote it wrong I build it for what I quoted. That is why I won't play their game. In the case of the toyota I was buying it for my mother who instructed me to play for the unquoted option. She wanted the car.

Don't you hate it when the salesperson has to run it by the sales manager. What was sweet about my toyota purchase was I keep telling the sales person I had to run by my mother.

I keep saying things like "she is very upset the option was not included in you quotation and she thinks you should honor you quote since you description of the vehicle say it was included".

Do the honda invoices have advertising fees on them?

    Is Honda's holdback 3%?

I was recently quoted $700 over invoice + 150 doc fees and no advertising. When I said to the salesperson that is unusual (i.e. no advertising)he said Honda holdback covers advertising fees.

He also stated they use the internet to sell cars "close to wholesale to boost their overall sales" (i.e. better alotment of cars in the future). So maybe there is an advertising fee that they are absorbing with some of the holdback.

This weekend we finally took delivery of a 2005 Touring Silver Pearl w/black leather for $2,210 off MSRP ($32,800). I think it was a good deal, the same dealer just offered me a discount of 800 for an EX-L. They also included splash guards, trunk tray and wheel locks. The deal was done on Tucson AZ.

I really enjoy it driving back to Phoenix on the Ody, it's really quiet, good ride and the gadgets are great compared to the EX-L (the difference was 2,800 between EX-L and Touring on my negotiation).

It was not a big problem to move the price down on the Touring, Different story on the EX-L.

I also picked up a van from this dealership and was extremely happy. Price was exactly what the internet manager told me. when i arrived every thing was ready to go and no changes to the numbers or anything. thanks for the info on this dealer. i was able to get a cloth ex for $600 over. internet manager said any van on the lot would be $600 over. Thanks again for the heads up.

PAX cost and availability. According to the tire manufacture's site, the closet tire dealer to LA that sells PAX tires is in Fresno, CA , a 4 hour trip. He can get the tires in 3 days from his warehouse and will charge $165 each. Cost of Inner polyerthane tire, $75 if it also needs replacement. His employees have just been trained on the 'special equipment' needed to remove the tire from the rim.
