Since it could be construed as solicitation - which we do not allow - respectfully, isell will not be able to provide these answers here.

Congrats, that is a great deal. This is the exact deal I'm waiting for on an 05 EX-L RES. I'm flexible on color and I'm in no hurry. I'll wait until I get this deal before I buy.

First few offers have been $1K below MSRP, but that is NOT where I am willing to purchase. I'll keep checking in every month until prices come down a bit more. Those that "must have now" can pay the premiums!

Yesterday I took home an EX-L from Essex Honda for the following:

    Price: $28,000
    Tax: $1600
    Other Stuff: $662
    OTD: $30,262

They had it on the lot. No waiting. Silver exterior, gray interior. Negotiated via email. I offered $28k and they accepted. On-line inventory showed six on the lot.

They offered 5.9% financing and said they had no room to move, so I went elsewhere and got 3.8%. Miraculously at closing, they came back with 4%, but I stuck with what I had.

They lowballed me horribly on my existing vehicle, so no trade-in.

    Overall, pretty straightforward and simple.

Well, that's about $500 over invoice, plus whatever fluff the extra stuff was (care to elaborate?) In any case, you at least matched the Bedards deal of $950 over, but no padding and minimal fees.

I purchased the 7 year/100,000 mile Honda Care warranty with 0% deductible today for $1200 at a local Virginia dealer. I am confident that is the best price out there.
People claiming that curry honda sells for $900 are not being truthful. They said they never have.
If you wait to purchase it after 3 years you will pay even more for it, but you do have that option.
I think it is a must have especially on EXL and above because everything is electronic.
I have the silver/black interior touring DVD & NAVI and even though it is the most expensive van on the planet I am happy I went for it. It is totally awesome. I am expecially happy with the stereo. It's not the worlds best, but I wouldn't want anything less (EXL and below).
    Just my 2 cents worth.....

I don't see how Isell commenting on demand (or lack of it) for particular trim levels could possibly be construed as solicitation. No one knows who he is or exactly where he works. But, since you're making the big bucks......

O.K....I'll respond to at least part of your questions.

Highest demand and shortest supply is for EXL Odysseys and the DVD and Navi models. For some reason, Navi models have really taken off. Not the case with the 99-04's. The LX's are the slowest movers (as before)and the cloth EX's don't get the demand of the higher models.

Non Navi Tourings aren't nearly as popular as the Navi Tourings. I guess if people want a Touring they want it all.

The pickier people are on color, the longer it'll take to get the Odyssey of their dreams.

Also, the HOSTS here know me well and they know I have NEVER used these forums to promote myself.

Thanks to all the information I gathered on this site, plus a bit of luck -- due to end of the month quota, I'm sure -- I was able to purchase and take delivery on an Ocean Mist (the exact color I wanted) EX-Cloth at $500 over invoice at Leesburg Honda:

    $26,027 (includes freight)
    $199 Dealer Fee
    $787 State Tax
    $26.94 Dealer Tax
    $51.50 Title
    $27,092 (out the door)

Excellent dealership. Great service, no run-arounds, games, etc. Completely professional and courteous. (Can't guarantee, of course, that you'll get the same price now, since it was end of the month).

E-mailed about 75 dealers on Sunday and Monday -- about half responded -- some even claimed to be able to match (or beat) the offer I eventually went with (some, of course, tried to disparage my offer).

Internet buying is the best! I'll never go back to the old salesman face-to-face tactics again.

Dealer didn't even have the color I wanted in stock, but was able to trade with another dealer to get it.

Again, thanks to all for advice and insights. I never could have done it without the information on this board.
  • jmac41jmac41 Member Posts: 9
BTW, Duncan Hokie Honda responded as well -- and said they were no longer doing $500 over invoice due to "supply and demand".

That's right - isell is a law-abiding and highly regarded member who provides extrememly valuable insight.

We have had unfortunate incidents (especially with the Honda Ody the past few months) of salespeople who do post prices and solicit, so just don't want to get isell in trouble. ;-)

    Cheers.

I'm looking to get an EXL with DVD & NAVI in Northern Virginia. The 7 year Honda Care warranty makes sense to me also.

I will be purchasing it this month. I've got a couple of quotes from local dealers via the Edmunds site, but nothing I'm satisfied with yet. I'm willing to travel a bit. Any suggestions for good dealers in the NoVA area?

There's no reason to be paying more than MSRP on these right now.
  • jmac41jmac41 Member Posts: 9
That's interesting ... I got a response back from Rule Honda saying that they would never go down to even the $500 over invoice that I had been quoted (and eventually took) -- congrats!
  • mikechenmikechen Member Posts: 11
The best price I was quoted so far is only $500 less than MSRP in Bay Area...even try many dealers in LA (Someone said he can get one $35,450 OTD, good for him.)

    What's your quoted price?
  • iliadnailiadna Member Posts: 9
Wah ... called Bedard today and they still have no build date on my Ocean Mist EX-L w/ Navi and DVD. (Ordered in early November, they estimated I'd get it mid to late January)They told me what I already knew from this and other forums -- nationwide demand for this model, etc., etc.

Saw a dealer post on another forum that if they don't have build date for your car now, you're probably looking at early February. Anyone know any different?

and to ktupper: i checked about 20 D.C. area dealers and didn't find any good deals. i got in on the bedard deal (950 over invoice) early enough before the door shut. i suggest broadening your search to other states, concentrating on the smaller, rural dealerships. that seems to be where the deals have been...

Jmac41- Just curious as to your buying approach. Did you email requesting a price quote and use those quotes as leverage against the other dealers or did you start out by making a $500+ offer and hoping one of the dealers took it? I will be buying in the next month or so and am trying to figure out the best way to start the negotiations. Your insight would be helpful.

I think South Bay Honda is a good place to get a good deal on the 05 Odysseys.

They are willing to give $1,700 off of MSRP on the touring (no DVD, no RES) and $1,100 off of the EX (cloth).

I just talked to them yesterday. I didn't buy, because I asked for $2,000 off!! I guess I need to wait longer.
  • ecarmackecarmack Member Posts: 161
Park Honda in Akron, OH just sent out an email for $500 over invoice on any in stock LX or EX, with "special" pricing available on the Touring. It said they had 24 in stock.

I am picking up a Touring RES & NAV in the next day or two at The Honda Store in Youngstown (Boardman) for $750 over invoice ($35,309). The build date on my original EXL-R&N was pushed back from 11/15 to 12/21. The dealer said that almost all of the R&N models coming to that region had been pushed back to the end of December or January. I already sold my car and didn't want to wait until the end of the month. Especially with the potential for more build and shipping delays due to the holidays.

I don't know if she would do that deal for someone else. I have been dealing with her for about a month and a half, so I feel like she is giving me a break because of the delays.
  • jmac41jmac41 Member Posts: 9
I started with the well established (at least at the time) $500 over invoice from Duncan Hokie Honda (which, as it turned out, even Duncan didn't live up to).

When e-mailing the dealers, I stated that I had an existing offer of 26,027 ($500 over invoice including freight for EX-Cloth -- adjust your numbers accordingly depending on trim desired) -- and made my color request.

As I mentioned, a few dealers said I was being lied to -- and arrogantly said that I should call them when I find out the truth from said offering dealer -- needless to say, it gave me immense joy to e-mail these blowhards back and say that I took delivery at the price I requested (and the color I wanted).

Others gave various initial quotes -- either voluntarily or involuntarily ignoring my existing "offer" -- none of these initial "Internet only" quotes, by the way, came close to $500 over invoice.

One dealer (the one I eventually purchased from) immediately matched my "offer" -- but only on in-stock colors (which mine wasn't). They eventually agreed to match my offer -- and trade for the color I wanted -- but only if the purchase would be consummated by November 30 (end of the month).

I said yes -- they traded for the color (at some distance away, according to the odometer) -- and I drove home Tuesday night.

In the meantime, I did get other responses from other dealers saying that they would match or beat my $500 over invoice offer -- but I didn't pursue them further, because they never made an attempt to get the color I wanted.

Since I don't see anything about Hawaii, I'll post my experience to date: visited only one of the three dealers on the island so far, Pfleuger Honda. They said their stock is coming in slowly and they are selling everything they receive--basically demand is exceeding supply--and they recommended to me that I wait until at least January to begin serious shopping, which was an interesting comment, I thought. Since the vehicle is apparently now available through Costco Auto Center, I'm going to investigate that option next, though in the past the Member price has been only $500 off of MSRP.

Just bought a new 2005 Odyssey EX (sage brush with ivory) and am looking for advice on an extended warranty. got a $1000 off MRSP at end of month and 2.9% financing!!) the dealer is offering an aftermarket 7 year/75,000 miles warranty for $954. He didn't tell me it was an aftermarket warranty and I assumed it was a Honda Care warranty. So now, I don't trust anything he says about his aftermarket warranty. He's telling me the honda care doesn't cover diagnostic time. Is that true? Also, can I buy a honda care warranty online? Any recommendations on where?

    thanks,

I have purchased 4 cars this way and my approach has always been the same: I ask for their "best price" on a particular model with specified equipment. If possible, I have already looked at their inventory on the net so I know (as best I can) what they have in stock. I also inquire as to exact vehicle mileage to avoid getting a quote on a demo.

Usually the quotes I get in return are firm or very close to bottom line. I have not intentionally played dealers off against each other but at least one time it worked out that way. Once I merely replied, "Thanks, but no thanks, I got a better number elsewhere" and Dealer A came back with a better number (as did Dealer B when so advised).

If possible, I avoid giving my phone number initially. We can talk to arrange the delivery after we have agreed on price.
  • dnmmgdnmmg Member Posts: 10
I signed a purchase agreement on an E XL with NAV/RES and was told by the dealer the vehicle has 300 miles on it. Does this make it a demo? The price was to good to pass up. The purchase agreement is marked as new. What makes the vehicle a demo?
  • rumrunner1rumrunner1 Member Posts: 8
Hey I picked up an EXL with leather steering wheel at Honda of Mentor on Sunday for 30738 OTD.

    I think that's a pretty good price isn't it.

That's about $1000 over invoice, but with leather steering wheel cover also thrown in. So bottom line about $900 - $950 over invoice.

    Tax rate is 7.25% = $2070
    Title $25
    Doc fee $100
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Your Ody is probably NOT a demo. It could have been a trade with a dealer 290 miles from where you bought it or could have been test driven by a few others.
A demo is normally kept for 6 to 8 months by the dealership and will have 6,000 miles or more on the odometer.
Look at the manufacturer's label on the window to see if the selling dealer was listed on the label. Also check inside the driver's door to see the date of manufacture.
  • dnmmgdnmmg Member Posts: 10
Thank you. I'll check that out when I pick up the vehicle.

    You're getting a TOURING R&N for $35,309?
Did you mean an EXL R&N?
  • ecarmackecarmack Member Posts: 161
No, it really is the Silver Pearl w/black leather Touring R&N for $35,309 ($3,500 off/$750 over invoice). I had a deposit on the EXL R&N for $32,000, but the build date was delayed. The dealer agreed to sell an incoming Touring R&N for that price because I needed the van before January.

I really debated the $3,300 difference, but decided to go with it. I will post a follow-up when I get the van to confirm the numbers held up.

I have been lurking in this forum for a few weeks with a target of buying in January. I want to use some of the same strategies that people have posted here in order to target a lot of dealerships. My question is this: Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) with buying from a dealer out of your home state. I am in NC, and would be willing to travel into SC, VA, and even GA if I can get the deal I want. I am particularly concerned about State sales tax and Registration/Tag issues.

Any advice or experiences are appreciated.

    Thanks!

It does not matter where you buy the van from. Your local state taxes will have to be paid when you register the van with your local DMV office. I just bought my van from MA (where tax is 5%) and I paid the 6% in PA where it was registered. Otherwise Delaware would be nothing but a long strip of car dealers :-))
  • psuwifepsuwife Member Posts: 29
Many of us have gotten our van from 500 above, 1000 above and so on. Nothing very unusual in the East. California and WA is another story.
  • rdbrdb Member Posts: 3
Jim, I bought a EX-L with DVD and Navi from a MD dealer (Hagerstown Honda) about 75 miles away from where I live. (I live in Nothern Va.) Two weeks ago, They gave me the Best OTD prize and a no haggle deal. So I wont be concernd as you will be paying the NC tax and tag fees. New cars may be taken to the nearest Honda dealer for any issues ref. to the warranty.

    Good luck.

    Vancurious,

Sorry, been away from the forum since I picked up our van. Just thought I'd check to see what was going on and I saw your post.

Ah, so your in NJ huh - cool, I live in NY but work in NJ. Let me tell you, I started my search by researching the heck out of the sienna. I talked to and dealt with over 20 toyota dealers in orange county NY and northern NJ - all BS-artists. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. I got so fed up I ended up within inches of doing a deal for a sienna with fitzmall.com - an outfit out of Maryland. Way cheaper than anyone in our area. Check them out if you really like the sienna. My sticking point was that I couldn't get nav in the sienna for less then 35 or 36k. - but I could get it in an ody for 32k! In my opinion the ody is the better value for the dollar. The sienna is great too, but I just think you get more bang for your buck with the ody.

Anyway, tax for me was 8.25% because I live in NY.
I'm not sure if Bedard is still doing the $950 over invoice deal, but I can't see why they wouldn't be - if you were willing to wait a bit. These guys are making it up on the volume. If you want nav you will have to wait no matter who you deal with, without nav you can probably get a car quicker.

One thing I will say is that Bedard came through on everything they told me - I had to wait 4 weeks, and my car came in right on time. The idiots in NJ told me I'd have to wait even longer than that! The gentlemen I dealt with at Bedard were great, the most professional guys I've dealt with.

Word of caution - Mawah Honda is greedy - don't bother going there.

As far as dealer holdback, you can get a good definition of that from right here on edmunds.com, check it out. Bascially, the dealer gets back a percentage (2 or 3%)from the manufacturer of the msrp on every car they sell - no matter what the sell it for. So, if you buy an ody that lists for 34k, and the holdback is 3%, the dealer gets back a check from honda for $1020 - even if the sell it to you for invoice.

They threw nothing in for free. No one does. If they do, they are screwing you somewhere else.

    Good luck.

I've got a couple quotes for list price only in Nashville. Any suggestions on dealers in TN that will go lower? I'm looking for an EX with leather & no add-on options.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Sorry...but...Once again, holdback is NOT bottom line profit. It HELPS pay for flooring and advertising. If we want to talk about holdback we also need to think of the tremendous overhead and taxes a dealership has to pay.

But...none of that matters here anyway. It's always the prevailing MARKET that determines pricing.

Sorry...but this holdback thing keeps coming up!
  • bobcat1bobcat1 Member Posts: 1
I'm new to this forum. After you pay for 500-1000 invoice, and state tax what eles you have to pay?
They told me to pay $27,200 out of the door for EX.
  • aab4aab4 Member Posts: 39
Here's a copy of what I paid for my Touring

    Price inc Delivery $31643
Dealer Fee 199- AKA Dealer Processing Fee
    3 % VA Tax 955
    Dealers Tax 63
    License, Title 49.50
    TOTAL OUT THE $32911
    Door Price

There should be no other charges, like window etching, pin stripping. These are dealer rip offs.

Of course when you get into F&I they try to sell you their financing, Maintenance, etc, etc.
Be careful, they will play with the numbers unless you stop them.

Best bet is Home Improvement Loan, have salesman
give you a sales order with your deposit, then write out check for the full amount, on sales order. You can do this all over the internet.

You then take away the F&I ammo. He now knows you are in control, not him.

You can always negotiate dealer processing fee, some dealerships are @ $ 399.

    $ 99 is reasonable, $ 199 if you get a great price.

    Hope that helps.

End of story (from postings # 7223 and 7227):
Got an e-mail from my nephew answering some very specific questions.
Actual price quoted for the 2005 Odyssey EX (cloth) was $26,200 which included cross bars, mud flaps, and locking lug nuts which the dealer claimed was a $500 value. Doc Fee would have been an additional $299 so his deal was NOT as good as I had understood.
A few days later on November 30, he went to another dealer and bought a new 2005 Odyssey EX for $25,409 + $199 Doc Fee + sales tax. That was a discount of $3101 from the Ody EX MSRP $28,510.
He checked the dealership the next day and their lowest offer was $1,000 more than he paid.
It does pay to purchase at the end of the month. I believe he told me the truth but next time I see him I will ask to see the paperwork with my own eyes.
  • twinmommytwinmommy Member Posts: 2
I was one of those people who couldn't wait and bought a Silver EXL-RES in September in Lynnwood at $2500 over MSRP. They only threw in the cassette player, mudflaps & door & wheel guards. Other dealers in Everett & Burlington were quoting $3000-$3500 over MSRP at the time. From the sound of things I should have waited because prices have come way down. I did get 2.99% financing through my credit union and HondaCare warranty for $999.
