Anybody out there getting the 20/28 mpg yet?

I know it takes some time for a break in, but just how long is the break in period?

I got 16 mpg the first tank, and about 19 mpg the second, but the second was all highway.

    Thanks.
  • arbysauce2000arbysauce2000 Member Posts: 1
Interstate driving 24 MPG on first tank, 25 MPG second tank. 05 EXL. Great car.

    Congrats on the new ride...

Since this discussion is for prices paid/buying experiences only, ownership issues (gas mileage, etc.) should be taken to the Honda Odyssey Owners Club

    Thanks!

I bought a 2005 Ody EX this weekend for 24,200 plus $289 dealer processing fee. Did I get a decent deal? I told them up front I would not pay destination or advertising. I was told the best time to buy a car is one of the last days of the month because dealerships are scrambling to make their monthly targets.
  • lookin405odylookin405ody Member Posts: 3
bought at Heritage in Westminster. EXL-RES out the door price 32,400 with wheel locks, splash guards, and the plastic storage bin for the rear well where the seats store (probably 300 worth of extras. It was a little higher than I wanted to pay but they did a dealer trade and and it there overnight. They were real up front about everything. They never claimed a waiting list but if they didn't have they did say it could take until Christmas to get here.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Dealer offered EX (no leather, etc) for $25,300 + Doc Fee + sales tax with no trade-in. That is a discount of $3210 off MSRP if I understood correctly.
Since he felt he was getting high pressure to buy it that evening, he walked.
In my opinion he was crazy as his 92' Astro has 160,000 miles on it. I think the Astro may have some expensive repairs before long. The 88 Honda Accord of his wife has 200,000 miles with the only major problem a transmission failure at 60,000 miles (not under warranty). He plans to keep the Accord and sell the Astro.

$24,200 plus $289 dealer fee is an unbelievable price for an '05 Odyssey EX as it is well below invoice.

Are there any typos in your post?
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
What store was your nephew at?

How much was the doc fee?

Many of us would not object to being subjected to such "high pressure," LOL.
  • kixokixo Member Posts: 35
Can you advise whether MSRP includes the $515 destination charge? That would help us understand how good these deals really are. For example, the Honda web site does NOT include the destination fee in its starting MSRP number.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Nephew lives in another state and I talked to him at Thanksgiving Dinner at my sister's home.
If I understood him correctly, he was at Larry H. Miller in Murray, Utah and the doc fee + tire recycle fee + title fee was about $300.
Edmunds lists NO rebates or incentives for a 2005 Odyssey. The TMV of an Odyssey is the same as final MSRP. The invoice for a 2005 Odyssey EX is $25,527. It appears to me that my nephew was offered a very good deal and may regret walking even though his deal was not nearly as remarkable as the $24,200 paid by want05. I did not see discounts this high on the 2004 Odyssey EX last summer.
  • SylviaSylvia Member Posts: 1,636
No - MSRP excludes the destination charge of $515. Click on the New Cars tab and navigate to the 2005 Honda Odysessy (you put in your zip code and then you can price with options, etc.) This will give you the MSRP and destination charge broken out, etc.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Edmunds pricing includes the $515 destination charge for final MSRP.
       Ody LX: $24,995 + $515 destination = $25,510
       Ody EX: $27,995 + $515 destination = $28,810
       EX-L: $30,295 + $515 = $30,810
             Add DVD for total $32,410
Add DVD + NAV total $34,610
       Touring: total $35,020
Add NAV + DVD total $38,810
  • want05want05 Member Posts: 6
No - that's what I really paid (that doesn't include sales taxes). It doesn't have leather or the entertainment/NAV, or automatic doors, etc. Pretty basic. I bought it at Fairfax Honda. I think they had about 4 of them in stock, but evidently the higher end models are what people are buying. Thanks for your note. That makes me feel better.
  • dnmmgdnmmg Member Posts: 10
They quote you one price to get you in the door, then give you some low ball price on a trade to make up the difference. A real waste of time.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
WOW. I would have never bought my nice, used 2002 T&C LX last summer if I had known a 2005 Odyssey EX could be purchased in late November for $24,200.
However, when you wrote it did not have the automatic doors, it appears to me that you purchased an LX since all EX models have the power sliding door on each side, cast wheels, automatic separately controlled temperature for driver and front passenger + more extras not included on the base Odyssey LX.

I was offered an 05 EX for $25,310. That is, until I got to the finance office where it suddenly became $28,310.

    See my earlier thread.

If it's too good to be true it probably is. Car dealers especially don't give anything away.
  • want05want05 Member Posts: 6
You're probably right. (I don't know one version from another!). Here's my story if it helps someone else. I walked in the door and told the salesman who greeted me that I wanted to drive out within 1 1/2 hours. I wasn't going to pay any more than 24,000 - no destination, advertising or anything else extra. If he couldn't do that then not to waste my time. I told him I didn't even want to test drive it. I was buying primarily for my dog (old yellow lab) who can't get up into high SUVs anymore. If he couldn't make the deal, then i would just go get a Caravan (they have big rebates right now). But, I wanted to support Honda as a manufacturer because of all their awesome safety features, crash test results. I ended up paying $200 more but that was OK.
  • michaelamichaela Member Posts: 12
$24,200 pluse $289 dealer processing fee!!! Is this really the price for an Ody EX? That sounds unbelievable!!! If I remember it correctly, the invoice price for EX is $25,500. Can you disclose the name of the dealership? Thanks.
  • yatesdyatesd Member Posts: 60
    michaela,

I just recently purchased an Odyssey and I know from reading the forums that in many areas the prices are negotiable.

Although, I'm happy for anyone that gets a good deal, this doesn't sound right. It doesn't even make sense.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Good point. I will send my nephew an e-mail telling him of your exact experience.
  • ctbuyer1ctbuyer1 Member Posts: 17
Hansienna: Could your nephew have been offered an 04 EX? I recently had a quote on an 04 EX at 24,744, which is/was invoice. There is also a $500 factory-to-dealer rebate on 04 Odysseys, so perhaps the dealer was trying to clear out his last one with a deal at 24,200.

DNMMG: If you're in North Central CT, try Bedard Brothers in Cheshire, MA. If you do a search on Bedard on this board, you'll see a bunch of satisfied customers.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I was thinking the same thing. A leftover 2004 model somewhere out there. Otherwise, that price that was offered was...well..a bit hard to swallow!
  • want05want05 Member Posts: 6
I made a mistake - this was for an LX. You can click on the string to see more detail. The dealership is Fairfax Honda in Fairfax, Virginia.
  • want05want05 Member Posts: 6
Yes - my mistake - it's an LX. So looks like I didn't get that great of a deal after all! I don't know what the invoice is for an LX. (click on want05 and you can see the whole story)
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I'll often hear..." I read on the internet where someone paid XXXX for a new EX Odyssey"

or..." A friend only paid XXXX"

There are the "prices paid" that make little sense but just maaaaay have happened"

Then there are the impossible ones.
  • billmarbillmar Member Posts: 1
I had a dealer tell me last night that Honda is going to be cutting Odyssey production by 33% going forward. Has anyone else heard this? The dealer was telling me that he expected supply to be limited for some time because of this. I've been trying to get an EXL with a particular ext & int color. The EXL seems to be in short supply.
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
My Toyota salesperson didn't believe a single price I told him about from this forum.

Same old 'Edmunds is wrong, the internet is wrong, blah blah blah.......'

Is that the first lesson at car salesman school?

Of course, I understand the difference between a price claimed to have been paid here and actual invoice pricing available across the internet (Edmunds, Carsdirect, etc.)....

    Hello all,

On November 26, 2005 I purchased an 05 Odyssey EX - L - RES for $30,700 from Baytown Honda. The price include destination charge but does not include Tax, Title, or License fees.

I sent out 15 email to 15 different Honda Dealerhhip surrounding Houston, on 11/24/04. It took Baytown 10 minutes to respond to my email offer. Two other dealership agreed to my price offer of $30,700 for said model but Baytown Honda agreed to the price first so they got the sale. The other two dealership are Gillman Honda and McDavid Honda. The other 12 dealership either did not reply or only offered $1,000 below MSRP.

FYI - My price offer is halfway between MSRP and Dealer Invoice. In other words, it is roughly $1,700 below MSRP or $1,700 above Dealer Invoice.

PS. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy said van from one of the other two dealership because they offer service perks that Baytown Honda does not. Please see their respective website for more details. Thanks to Edmunds.com and posters for their comments and insights. Last, but not least, I am buying the 7/100/0 Honda Care Warranty from Dick Brooks Honda for $1089. Good luck everyone and have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Congratulations! did you already take delivery? if not what is the approx date of delivery? What color did you buy?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,565
maybe they will cut production in December due to the holidays, but I can't believe they are selling so poorly that they would go from +/- 180K units to 120K.

I believe they do share the plant with the Pilot and the new trucklet thingee, so that could eat in production.

My local dealers seem to have a decent supply level (20+ that i could find), so this isn't 1998 all over again, but they still supposedly are selling.

I actually got a call yesterday from the local guy that the model/color we decided on was now in stock. Might have to go check it out.

Just inked a 2005 Ody ExL for $1000 above invoice.
Think got a good deal as was not insisting on color and ready to wait for couple of days.
Don't buy it at any MA dealers, they are a cartel.
NY, NJ seems ok. Thinking about 7/100 service, please let us know if we need this, should we wait as we can buy it before 36k factory warranty expires and best price we can get.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Fair price as Edmund's lists TMV for any 2005 Odyssey as the actual MSRP (that includes Destination).
Dealers need more than invoice to pay overhead, the salesmen, and make a fair profit.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
$24,200 for an 2005 Ody LX is a fair price as it is $1310 below MSRP and $1099 above Invoice.
Edmunds TMV is the same as MSRP (including Destination). The Odyssey LX is a nice, well equipped minivan although the EX has many more features.
The only feature the EX has above the LX important to me is the separately controlled temperature for the driver and front passenger although the cast wheels look very nice and the power sliding doors might be convenient.
  • luvmy05odyluvmy05ody Member Posts: 8
Oh, a dealer told you this! It must be true then(ha,ha). The production cuts that the dealer mentioned are probably due to the 2 week shutdown that occurs at all OEM's the last two weeks of Dececmber. And, after all, Honda has not reached full volume on the Odyssey anyways, they are probably only at 70-80% since it is a new model. If you don't want to wait any longer, find one on the dealer lot and get it. That's what I did, and I love to drive it, not just think about driving it. Good luck.

Would be able to reveal the wonderful deal you got? This looks like a salesman's posting to me - praising the dealership with no numbers.
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,242
It'd be nice to get the numbers - it's not a whole lot of use otherwise. However, using a handy-dandy tracking feature, this person doesn't appear to be affiliated with the dealership.

I would have to say "pure rubbish" WHY would Honda do such a thing?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Well, Heywood...somehow, I just knew you would be responding to my post.

So...let me pick my words carefully.

From my perspective I read these "prices paid" numbers and think to myself.

    1. That sounds about right.

    2. Wow, why would a dealer cheap sell a hard to
    get car like that?

    3. This is a "mistake" or else someone trying to "one up" someone else.

A recent poster proved # 3 by re-posting they had bought an LX and not the EX they said they had bought.

As with all things, what is read on the internet has to be filtered. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

    Carry on...

I paid for and pick up the vehicle on 11/26/05. It was Silver Pearl Metallic with Gray Leather and RES.
  • man_007man_007 Member Posts: 9
How did you score in Plaza? I got my deposit back from Hillside yesterday. I am looking out of state now. Honda is screwed up this one. Touring with NAV&RES is simply not available but other models are going 500 to 1200 over invoice. Colors? What colors? In NY,CT,NJ dealers laugh when you tell them about colors. Silver is the only available at MSRP or 500 below.
  • akjennyakjenny Member Posts: 1
Has anyone purchased a Touring or Ex/l in Seattle area? How about Portland or even California?

Where and what price did you get? I'm being quoted $1200 to $1500 OVER MSRP and I started with a price a little over dealer.
  • hanmanhanman Member Posts: 2
Could you please share with me specific information about Honda dealership outside the DC area? I don't mind driving a few hours for a better deal.

    Thanks in advance!
  • ctbuyer1ctbuyer1 Member Posts: 17
    Vancurious...I'll do my best:

    1. Is bedard still offering 950 over invoice + 50 doc fee?

Answer: I paid $1000 over invoice plus the 50$ document fee. More local dealers wanted MSRP or just under, and at least $250 doc fees. (See also last comment below.)

    2. Is bedard still the best bet, or should i try other nj/ny dealers. do i use edmunds to locate these dealers or honda site?

Answer: I found Bedard very easy to work with--no hassles, never felt pressed. I recommend them, but you have to consider if they have or can get the model/color you want.

    3. what is the delaer holdup fee you mentioned in your message.

Answer: I don't know what the other poster referred to.

    4. What is the breakup of the total price you paid? FYI, sales tax in NJ is 6%.

Answer: See #1 above--that was price for the EX cloth van clean--no accessories, taxes, reg fees, etc.

    5. What accessories did bedard throw in (crossbars for roofrack, splash guards, etc).

Answer: While negotiating my trade-in (an old car), I unsuccesfully tried to get them to throw in all-season mats or something else. However, I did get them to agree to deliver the van. (I'm not right near Bedard, but close enough.)

In my conversations with the salesman, he said that the 950 over invoice deal was something given to a multiple repeat customer and "it became legend" here on Edmunds. He could not confirm what future prices will be, but from what I've seen Bedard is very aggressive and wants the business.

    Hope this helps.
  • lumbarlumbar Member Posts: 421
Agreed--nice price. It's interesting how fast this vehicle moved to pretty substantially under MSRP in many areas when you consider some of the predictions made here only a short time ago that it would be selling at or above for a long time. Wonder how many dealers still are trying for additional dealer markups?
  • minibuyerminibuyer Member Posts: 9
    Hi all,

I've emailed around Northern and Southern California dealerships for quotes on an '05 EXL, and can't seem to do better that $29,810. Does anyone think I can do better? Would it be better to wait until December or January?

It seems that this is still a better value than an '05 Sienna XLE package #6 (i.e., what seems to be the comperable trim).

Anyway, today I asked the dealers at $29,810 to at least throw in a day/night rear view mirror, subwoofer, and backup sensors. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just picked up our Odyssey EX from Hagerstown Honda in Maryland. We dealt with the internet desk, and they were excellent. They didn't have an EX on their lot, but they found one for us very quickly and gave us a great price for this area, especially considering that they had to do a trade. We paid $1400 or so under MSRP, plus taxes, tags, destination, and a $49 processing fee. No pressure to get extras we didn't want or a warranty. No dealer add-ons. Salesman was consistent and upfront the whole time, and the transaction was speedy.

We also found David Wheeler Honda in Easton, MD very helpful over the phone, but we went with the closer dealer in the end. Ourisman in Bethesda had a good price, but didn't have much inventory. Several other DC area dealers either wouldn't drop the price or wouldn't even respond to our emails.

Always enjoy your insight, Isell. You know by now I taunt you....

So the 'Prices Paid' subject is a segway to a question I've been meaning to ask you:

Your comments on deals posted here are notable only by their absence, and you aren't tipping your hand to any of these potential buyers--even if they're 2,000 miles away. So what are Odys commanding at YOUR dealership? What about base Tourings? Will you 'fess up that discounts are happening as we speak?

Please spare me any stories about how YOUR market is different, people are lining up, blah, blah....
  • psuwifepsuwife Member Posts: 29
    >1. Is Bedard still offering 950 over invoice + 50 doc fee?
I do not think so. I paid 950 over invoice + 50 in documentation fee. But there is no harm in calling and finding out.

    >2. Is bedard still the best bet, or should i try other nj/ny dealers. do i use edmunds to locate these dealers or honda site?
I have no idea. I was on edmunds.com on a regular basis reading up on almost everything and anything I could about the Ody. Remember in Sept/Oct not too many had it. The few who did were happy. We saw an EX-L and a plain touring.

    >3. what is the delaer holdup fee you mentioned in your message.
None that I know. I do not know what honda offers them. That is not my business. I was going to buy my van either down from MSRP or up from invoice. These were the only two numbers that concerned me.

    >4. What is the breakup of the total price you paid? FYI, sales tax in NJ is 6%.
When I got there I had my home equity loan check book. I gave them a check for 35,558. That is the invoice + 1000. I am going tomorrow to my local DMV office to pay for the registration and my 6% taxes due to PA.

    >5. What accessories did bedard throw in (crossbars for roofrack, splash guards, etc).
Nobody throws in anything for a van so new. If they do it is because you have developed a long term relationship and they want you to come there regularly. In this case it is a one time deal. They are 7 hours away for a regular oil change :-)

    >Thanks and sorry for so many qns, but you seem so well informed.
Well on morgans behalf I accept :-))
They are a good dealership. They informed me about the 7 year warranty and advised me to get it But they also told me that I could buy it at the end of the 3 year period. And then they went on to explaining the Navi package. I actually have not yet had the time to call them and ask for a price. So there was no selling pressure. It was a breeze to work with them. I will give them a call the next time I want to buy a Honda vehicle. I dreaded going into any dealership and my husband and I went to quite a few across PA.

So in the end. You will love your van. We have the Touring with NAV and my husband loves driving it. The kids loved the ride from MA-NJ-PA. That is all that counts.
