I am very appreciative of the info I got from this forum and wanted to be sure to tell about my buying experience.

We just bought an Ocean Mist Ody EX-L today. Our price was as follows:

    $27,950.00 Base price

275.00 (Pinstripe, Guards, & Wheel Locks)

    846.75 3% NC Tax

    56.00 NC Tags

    $29,127.75 Total out the door

We live in Raleigh and, in the Raleigh area, could not get the prices that are often discussed on this forum. But thanks to someone on this forum, we learned about John Hoover Honda in Danville, VA. With them, I exchanged email and got them to lower their initial quote by $600 based on info I got from this forum. We did have an inviting quote from a MD dealer, but this seemed too far and the John Hoover deal seemed to be just as good.

Once the deal was set, and we got to VA to pick up the van, I was really impressed by our salesman and our treatment there. Also, I was pleased that no additional cost was brought up (except for the discussion about the extended warranty that we turned down.) Their out-the-door price that was quoted before we got there, turned out to be completely correct. We paid exactly that amount. Very, very smooth. Really recommend this dealership.

Good luck to everyone in the market.

Other members of this forum have posted good things about Dick Brooks Honda in Greer. I got a quote from their Internet Mgr for about $500 over invoice on an EX-L in Feb. Ended up buying at Crown Honda in Charlotte for $400 under invoice. Internet Department there was very easy to work with. No surprises or problems. Best car purchase experience I've ever had on a new vehicle.

Hammered out the deal tonight at John Chezik Honda in KC with the internet manager and GM.

I don't think they are making a lot of money on this but they probably will get a lot of positive advertising. There are two more Tourings NAV/RES on the lot (Blue w/black and Silver w/Gray).

We selected a brand spanking new off the truck Silver Touring NAV/RES with Black interior. Going on Monday for the PDI and checklist.

Price: 34,800 (Includes the $515 destination fee)
    Documentation: 179
    + Taxes when we register.

    Additional Buys:
Honda All Weather Floor Mats: 60 (Discounted) (They offered a free cargo tray but we chose to pay the difference for the front mats because of the black interior)

Put 4000 down on Fidelity Credit Card for credit to our 529 Plans.

    Wife is happy.

Hi Lopcheung... would you mind to tell me how you negotiate to this low price? Did the gentleman sent you the higher quotation first? Thanks.

After research and reading this forum, I requested a Quick quote from Edmunds website. I received 3 quotes from local dealers. Honda Mall Of Georgia quoted an EX with no options at invoice, plus $500. documentation fee, title fees and sales tax. Gwinnett Place Honda was 2nd; but agreed to price match and include mud guards and roof cross bars. After selecting the car at Gwinnett Place Honda, I spent the next hour and 45 minutes filling out all the paperwork; only to be told by the internet mgr.that the written quote I received had the wrong price. It was $ 600. too low! He said the quote meant nothing, and he apologized. I left;and immediately went to Honda Mall of Georgia. The internet mgr. greeted me;introduced me to his sales consultant; who showed me the vehicle; had it prepped;and filled out the paperwork. The pricing was exactly as quoted. Everyone there was friendly, professional; and there were no surprises. Excellent!

Bought our Odyssey in Memphis. We Live in North West Arkansas. While in Memphis after Thanksgiving we noticed that they had 20 2005's on the lot. We were unsuccessful in getting the two dealers in NWA to deal and they only had one or two on the lot. This is how dealers keep the price up.

They had the one we wanted in Memphis and we were able to negotiate with them. They still made good money but we got 1400 off the bottom sticker price.

Hi, RMills...can you tell me more about the dealership in MD you were dealing with? I'm in Northern VA and would prefer to go to MD than Danville if possible. Thanks!

Great deal there, Sapper. Your $34,979 looks to put you under invoice on a new price (post 2/14 build) unit. Super price on the mats too.

Your wife will be even happier after she drives it for awhile.

try honda of oakland. i have purchased two honda odysseys (ex model,
but not leather) in the last month at (even slightly below!) invoice.
only extra fees are $45 doc fee, which seems standard to all purchases
these days, and states taxes and fees. invoice on a base EX right now is about $25,530.

i think you will get slightly better pricing from the internet / fleet salesperson, and if you call in as a serious buyer talking "invoice" price, i
believe it is likely they will hook you up.

if you want the extended warranty they will tell you it is at "dealer
cost," but after reading a bunch of posts on the relevant forums here i believe their mark-up on that is almost 50%. i strongly recommend negotiating that as part of the purchase deal and making it part of the "buy or not buy" decision. it seems that if you asked for 1/3 off the listed price they are still making a fair amount of money on that part of the deal.

i think these days the warranty mark-up and dealer holdback are the two areas that most dealers are making their money.

Just purchased an 05 here in Louisiana and wanted to share my experience. I sent email quote requests to 11 dealers in Louisiana and Texas. Four of these took the time to send a reply. A new orleans area dealer (email me if you want the name)sent a quote of 21,299. When I called, they informed me this was a mistake and I should just "come on down". I live approximately three hours from this dealership. When I asked for another quote the salesperson said he would get back to me via email (he never did). I ended up purchasing from Holmes Honda in Shreveport. I paid 24,675 plus tax. This figure included mud flaps, front air deflector, plus paint and fabric "protection". In addition, they gave me 1000 dollars over NADA for my trade. A very professional dealership delivered to this customer a very pleasant buying experience!!

Dealers more apt to deal when...
-rainy weekend vs weekday: slow traffic? YES
-end of month: to meet sales targets? YES
-end of quarter: same as end of month, but more pressure? YES, not different from end of month, unless it is the year end
-end of day: want to book a sale? YES

Common Sense confirms all these questions. Doesn't have to a car sales situation, furniture, electronics,--your own job-- When is the pressure on for you? Same thing in the car biz!

If you don't face pressure in the workplace to produce, then you are not making much$.

Doesn't matter how you reply, because you won't tell the truth.- Wow! Who kicked you this morning when you woke up? Kind of a harsh statement with no facts to go on.

Why would you waste time with some dealer like this. Why would you not go with the best quote on the first try. - Uuhh - maybe because other dealers will come down and each changes offer by a different amount?

    Hi tel,

Yes, we got an email quote from Ourisman Honda in Bethesda, MD. They said a EX-L would be $27, 933. I didn't press to see what other charges would be involved.

    good luck!

I'm within 3 weeks of buying a '05 Odyssey EX-L - RES and really don't like the car purchasing experience. I've done it once and was wondering if anyone had info on buying within the Pittsburgh area. Suggestions on which dealerships to do business with? Also, has anyone used the Costco car purchase program and what kind of price did you pay? Or can I do better calling and speaking with the internet manager?
  • ody77ody77 Member Posts: 2
I have been reading this forum since three weeks. I got some idea how to purchase an Odyssey. After sending emails to few dealers in Washington DC metro area I realized that the local dealers want to have MSRP. So I tried at near cities like Pittsburgh, Philadelphia in PA. I got a quote from Jones Honda Lancaster for $31,800 out the door. I need to pay MD taxes and tags in Maryland. So far this was the best quote for new Odyssey 2005 EXL-NAVI&RES Redrock pearl/Ivory. I deposited $500. The dealer is two hours drive from my place. The vehicle will be built in middle of April. I guess vehicle will be ready to pick in first week of May.
Good luck for DC metro buyers.

    (Long, sorry)

I have been shopping casually for a 05 Ody with RES and NAV for a few months, seriously for the past few weeks. I can tell you that emailing dealers DOES work. I started by doing the research on exactly what I wanted. I don’t need a salesman at a dealership to tell me this. I learned all the Ody features and figured out what I wanted/needed. I also researched invoice prices and read this forum so to know what others were paying.

Then I emailed 21 dealers in Colorado, KC, and UT. I live in Denver. I waited for their responses. My goal was to get a good quote and play each dealer against each other. This worked. Almost all of them gave me the standard MSRP or maybe $1500 off. I emailed them saying I needed a better deal. After a few days a few started to follow up asking me where I was in the buying decision. Then 1 offered around 900 over invoice. I took this and started to send it to three other dealers that seemed like they wanted to work with me. I got the price down to $500 over invoice on the EX-L with RES and NAV before I even walked into a dealer. First I visited Ralph Shomp Honda in Denver. This is a “one price” dealership (they pretend to be different than other dealers but they are the same), but they were the one that went $500 over invoice (they started at $1500 under MSRP!). They gave a fair quote on my trade. I visited Plant Honda in Lakewood, CO and they low balled me on my trade and they were at $800 over invoice. I decided to go with Ralph Shomp and asked them to find the EX-L NAV and RES. There were only 8 in all of Colorado and no dealers were willing to trade them, since they are hot. I was not sure if they were truthful in not being able to dealer trade or not. I sort of sensed they sell most of their Ody at close to MSRP and why would they dealer trade something as valuable as a EX-L with RES and NAV to someone like me who wanted a good deal. Could be other dealers did not want to trade either. I went over to Mile High Honda in Aurora and they had 3 EX-L with RES and NAV (This is where Ralph Shomp was trying to dealer trade I think), and LOTS of other EX’s (I estimate about 30 Ody at least). After about 4 hours of haggling (I am not kidden), I got $581 over invoice (31363 plus 581 = 31944) and their $369 dealer handling fee. They gave me about $500 more on my trade then any other dealer, so I think I got the Ody for about $450 over invoice including this stupid D/H. Not bad on such a hard to find model with the features I wanted. In the end my knowledge and pre-work helped me haggle them down to this price, although it did take a long time on Saturday. While I was there on Saturday two other Ody were sold and I am very confident that those people only got 1000 or maybe 1500 off MSRP based on my conversations with them while waiting for our Vans to be prepped. Hard for me to believe folks don’t research this when they can save thousands of dollars. Once the deal was done and we were in the Finance guys office, they added $100 to the deal. I think they did it on purpose and thought I would not catch it, but you never know. I got them to change that to what we agreed and then we were done.

Anyway we love the Van so far (only 100 miles on it). Never been Van family but with our 3rd kid on the way it made the most sense.

If anyone in the Denver/Colorado area wants so more info let me know. I would be glad to share more details I learned the past few months about the dealers and who was good to work with and who to not waste your time with (like John Elways and Kuni-Burt = they were the HIGHEST price) etc. If I can help someone else get a good deal with what I learned I would be happy to.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
Wow! I can't believe DC dealers still want MSRP! I was shopping almost four months ago and also found good deals in PA, but ended up buying from Pohanka Honda of Salisbury, MD. Not only was the price great ($800 over invoice on Touring), but they delivered to my home in Northern VA for free!
And they're one of the dealers that sell HondaCare policies for close to cost ($1,075 for 7-yr/100K miles $0 deductible).

I am confused. I can't seem to determine a clear price for an EX in this forum due to incomplete numbers. So please, what would be a good asking price with destination & document fee added???

My first internet bid was 27,380 which seems high.

To answer several questions on my experience of buying my Ody in KC:

I initiated contact via email to the internet JHC sales POC and let them know I would be wanted to buy this week and I only would pay 34,800. I let them know I had finance in hand and ready to execute when he wanted to move one. They eventually came back to me (after several emails and calls) 35,000 + 179 documentation + TTL offer firm over the internet. Got me into the door. It helped that while we wanted to buy this weekend we didn’t have to and could wait if needed (which we were prepared to do) for the right price.

I think end of the month dynamics and taking one that was on the lot was a big factor. When I received confirmation of the 35,000 offer, I asked if the other local honda dealers would beat the deal and they basically heck NO. GM later told me how he is catching flak for selling it at this price from his "peers". BLUF is he moved a unit and the others didn’t which means JHC made money and the others did not.

I made two trips (Friday/Saturday) to check out the vehicle choices and they knew we were serious. GM sweetened the deal on Saturday to get me to close at the 34,860 + 179 doc + TTL price and I signed. We had to pick up the vehicle last night since we switched interior colors Saturday night and the PDI wasn't done.

The Finance manager beat my best credit union rate (my check from my CU was on the table ready to be used) by .2% (3.9 to 3.7) and give me same deal on 7 yr/100000 miles you can find on the net (if you've done your homework, you know the current lowest price). I spent more time in here than I thought I would but he give me exactly want I was looking for in terms of rates and warranty prices. Again, knowing the prices and rates in advance paid off. Remember, dealerships can profit off of financing through them. In this case, 3.7% was a win-win for me and them. They have to eat too.

We drove it home last night - awesome vehicle. We love it. We took so long (because of my tardiness in getting to the dealership that we couldn’t do the walk through with our sale rep (two boys with me at the time). I was concerned about issue of scratches, etc but they pleasantly rescheduled for Wed. night walk-through with me and guaranteed that anything would be fixed right, not to worry, and enjoy your new car. Strange as it seems, I trust them. JHC rocks

I came in armed with all the information that this board, Odyclub, and Fatwallet offered in buying a new car had to offer. I thought it was going to be painful and dragged out but it was extremely smooth and professionally.

Trust me, JHC made money on me otherwise they wouldn't have sold the car but I'm happy (wife is) and that is what counts. Plus it makes us feel good to hear we paid 3,4,5 grand less than some of the higher demand markets. FINALLY, living in central US pays off!!!!!

    Side Notes:

-Paid $5069.00 down on Fidelity Credit Card to get bonus for our Fidelity 529 Plans. 0% Interest for 12 months and will be paid off by next Feb.
-No other dealer in KC would touch JCH's deal. They are also currently working a $615 over dealer's invoice ad on all their Odys.
-JCH is pretty much a no haggle environment when you come in with knowledge and buyers information prepared. (Thanks Odyclub/Edmund Forum!).
-I'm sure that timing had something to do with it. End of month effect? Perhaps desire to move more Odys to get more allocations of Ridgelines?

Anyway, hopes this helps the next buyer.

    Sapper

Is invoice price 27434 or 27548? I've seen different numbers on KBB and Edmunds? Plus, I think both of those numbers represent the pre 2/14 invoice increase of about $396.

Yes, bridgetesch paid 27648 - that DID included destination and doc fee.
  • lopcheunglopcheung Member Posts: 7
yes, the internet sales manager sent me a quote that was about $500 more....considering the silver color was not our very first choice, i asked him if he would come down to our price...and he did. hope that helps.

27434 was the invoice price on Edmunds today. KBB did not list invoice price. By the way, what was your dest and doc fees?
  • bridgeteschbridgetesch Member Posts: 14
There were no destination fees (I guess it was built into the $27548. The doc fees were $100.

I'm on the market for a new 2005 Odyssey EX-L with DVD in chicagoland area. I'm just wondering when was the last time that honda had a special financing on a Odyssey. The current rates for 60 months financing are over 5%.

Bought the following in NJ. I got three quotes from the Honda Web site. The best quote was

    Honda Odyssey EX-L
    Brush Sage Pearl/Olive interior
    27249 Base + dest fee
    15 Tire disposal/etc..
    199 Doc Fee
322 4 years of registration (NJ law)
96 Window Etching - I didn't want this but what can you do if the price is good?
    1634.94 Taxes

    29515.94 Total

They tacked on a few junk fees but the bottom line is good. One dealer refused to match, the other would match it.

    Hope this helps someone.

I have no idea about Honda. The dealers I talked to said they wouldn't do it for the rest of the year, but I'm not sure that I believe them.

I did secure a 60 month loan at 3.85% through USAA. They matched my credit union (Kraft Foods) rate and that even includes gap insurance too. I am not sure if you need to be a USAA member to be able to go through them though.

In New Jersey, we bought the Odyssey EX-L with DVD for the new invoice price $28,872. We got the window etching for free (don't pay for this) and free wheel locks thrown in. We got stuck with a high doc fee ($198) and couldn't get them to knock this down even though it is a way for them to pad in profit.

We estimate that the dealer at the very least made $500 profit off of us. The car we bought was on the lot prior to the Edmund's invoice hike from $28,472 to $28,872, so claiming the new "invoice" is as low as they go is not completely true. I'm not really sure why the Edmunds invoice price was inflated, but it seems questionable to me and seems to give dealers an added $400 "holdback" that is all profit.

Since this dealer very easily sold us the car for invoice, I STRONGLY believe that there is a HOLDBACK on Honda vehicles even though Edmunds does not list one. I'm 99% sure so word to the wise --- push to get at the very least invoice price for Hondas.

We also used internet quotes to our advantage which helped speed up the negotiation process and get it down to the new Edmunds invoice price. When they know that you know there are a lot fewer "let me go check" games...

Southern CT dealer quoted me the following. Is it fair to take? Any loopholes that the dealer can play with? Thanks.

    29,200.00 price of the car!
    139.00 title fees.
    1760.34 taxes @ 6%
    160.00 new plates CT.

Total out the door is: 31,259.34

Does the price of $28648 that you paid includes destination charge of $515. Would appreciate if you can tell me the dealer also. I am looking for exact same model and color.

    Thanks

If you post your prices without options and taxes and trade-in's, you will give a reference point for readers.

I'm in the DFW area too. I bought an EXL-RES for $500(approx) over invoice in Feb. I'm guessing prices would have gone down a bit since then. Search for my post or drop me an e-mail for more information.
  • b_radb_rad Member Posts: 38
Thats a thousand more than I paid. I can't figure out why. You might call them and make them an take it or leave it offer. My friend did not get as good of a deal as I did but ended up at 27,800 out the door on an EX. On the EXL it was going to be higher due to they seem to be more in demand. One thing I did find out, in Waco the trade-in value was a lot higher than anyone was willing to pay in the austin area. Did you try McDavid in Friscoe(spelling)? They were a few bucks less than Greg May.

Just wanted to provide some info:
Got a Ody 2005 EX-L with destination charges for $28300 from Honda East Columbus Ohio, tax not included.
  • pfaklerpfakler Member Posts: 1
Paid $27,959 (including destination) plus tax and tags for an EX with leather, with wheel locks thrown in for free. The vehicle was a March arrival, so post-increase.

The only junk fee was a $118 doc fee.

Overall great experience at Mahwah Honda.
  • mratlmratl Member Posts: 13
I can't get a fair deal on EX-L for the life of me. Best is 29k with dest and doc.

Now I am being told by two dealers that prices are going up by $1000 tomorrow.

Anyone caught wind of this? What's up with Atlanta market? Why is it so tight? I'm about to go to Jersey to get a car and drive back.
