I just checked 09 EX-L price (MSRP, invoice, and TMV) from Edmunds, and the marketing support doesn't show anymore. Anybody know if its gone? Thanks.

I think the east coast has more Oddys available and that is why you are still seeing better pricing from posts out there. The ecomony hit harder there especially with home values and such. Here in midwest there just is not that many Oddys period. Dealers know this and are just not letting go of them like crazy. I wanted a white EXL with RES which reduced my options but I will have it for 6 or 7 years so I better be happy with the color. I think you got a deal deal IMO
  • ksufootballksufootball Member Posts: 11
Why would a manufacturer make a bunch of product, sit it on the shelves, and then in order to move it offer huge rebates? All automotive manufacturers made this mistake (GM had to rebate so much for their past indescretions now Obama owns them). The Japanese are very smart people and will not overproduce again where they have to have hefty rebates. Besides with the 2011 redesign coming why would they want leftovers to have to rebate yet again? Honda is not going to sell as many cars as the last few years before the bust for awhile so you are going to see reduced production. You will not see as many 2010s as 2009s. Also the tales of reduced did not come from the dealership. As far as prestige, tell me another minivan manufacturer that carries the resell, reliability, and percieved value like Honda and Toyota. People will pay more and wait if necessary. They have done it before and will do it again to get the best. As far as that day buying the car is because it was the only one in a 5 state area period. It was going to be gone the next week. Oddys are still selling well in the midwest and 09s are practically gone with dealers still waiting on 2010s

I totally agree about things being worse on the coasts, hence more inventory of unsold 09 Odys there. Myself and several others waited expressedly for the Honda End of Year clearance, and CFC really messed things up. We have all been discussing our dealings on our Ody searches, and we all sum up that there are few, if any 09s left in the midwest. And there are no deals to be had on '10s.

But we also all agree that all that CFC did was pull in already-weak future demand, and believe that the fall selling season will be much worse than it was in spring/early summer. Credit continues to contract, and no .gov handouts means Honda will have to SIGNIFICANTLY cut back to avoid seeing prices drop. Plus, this third generation of Odys are starting to look tired.....

Of the three of us looking, two of us are dropping out of the search and waiting to see how things go in the fall. We might even hold out until the model refresh hits next year (for both Honda and Toyota - I'm guessing TOY will have a much-improved competitor to the ODY)

Northeast Shopping for OdyTouring. Two weeks ago no Touring available. 2009 now found with all we want. What should we pay 2009 after CfC? Should we wait for 2010? Will pay cash and plan to hold vehicle. Only difference we see between model year is in Paint -- Silver Metallic discontinued 2010. Community advice very helpful in this decision -- thank you! ...
  • andy603andy603 Member Posts: 59
You are confronting the same decision that many of us have lamented in this forum. I first suggest you spend an hour or so just going back 3 months or so on this forum to see what others have said and decided.

My view is that because you plan to 'hold' the van (im guessing at least 5 years?) the primary criteria btwn 2009 and 2010 should be price because the van is the same. Secondary is color- only you can decide what color is worth if they on have 2010 in your choice. For sure a 2010 will cost you more. I got my 2009 Touring w/out PAX at Boch in Norwood, MA about 5 weeks ago for $35200 + TTL.

    good luck.
  • sam156sam156 Member Posts: 9
2009 Touring is what we were looking for a few weeks ago. I was told that $36K+ would be a good price to pay for it, but I did see on here that someone got one for $35K OTD including taxes which is an incredible deal!! Since we were stuck on getting a white one and the dealers around here were asking MSRP for the only white Touring in the state, we ended up getting a 2010 EXL with R&N and we LOVE it!!
  • utbiutbi Member Posts: 4
Hi andy603, what's great deal you got on you 2009 Touring w/out Pax. I plan to get one too. Sorry for slowing $35200 +TTL, do you mean total or OTD right ? Do you mind to share the sale man name that you deal with, and can i use you as referral to deal with him. I live in Randolph, MA. I need a Van for my kid. Thank you so much. This is a great Forum.

I think that the trick to finding the 2009 Ody's is checking out the corners of the Honda world ---places where you would least likely expect to find a dealership full of vehicles ---for instance ---Rhinelander, WIsconsin !! They have 6 EX's and 10 EX-L's !!! I found this to be completely unbelievable ~!! EX-L colors include 4 slate green; 2 silver pearl; red; silver grey; white AND OCEAN MIST ~!! Check 'em out ~~!!
Hey, ---Rhinelander will become a beautiful road trip as the fall colors start to jump out ~!!
Enjoy ~~Wisconsin !! LOL (For those of you not familiar ---Rhinelander is about 1 1/2 hr north and slightly northwest of Green Bay ~~which is home of the Frozen Tundra ---but it isn't frozen --yet ...at this time of year ~~!!) LOL !!
    Rhinelanderhonda.com

Personally --we gave up the Ody idea --for the Subaru Tribeca ~! :)

I need help. i'm looking for a white 2010 EX-L with RES. A local dealer in atlanta might have found one, waiting to hear in the morning.

should i wait another month or two.
I can get the car at invoice $32,767 + tax, tags, title?

is this a good deal, should i hold of and see if the prices go down?

Has anyone compared pricing using the Costco Auto Program? Can you do better just haggling on your own? They say they have special pricing exclusively for Costco members at reduced prices. The brochure says they check "published average selling prices" of vehicles websites such as Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds True Market Value and then negotiate prearranged price discounts. It says that 98% of transactions resulted in an average savings of more than $1,000.

Are those here who are knowledgable and haggling w/ several dealerships saving much more that that?
  • clwmdmclwmdm Member Posts: 5
Odygater, for what it is worth, I gave up on the 2009 models due to CFC, and am waiting this one out. I don't care how much Honda cuts back on Ody production - they are simply trying to match supply with demand, and I am betting that demand will be lower still than Honda expects. Bargaining season WILL come back soon.

"However, signs are already emerging that overall sales will fall back sharply now that the incentives have expired.

Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive of Edmunds.com, an online car-pricing service, said that “cash-for-clunkers distorted the market in a way that benefited the industry for four weeks. Now the payback begins”.

Edmunds estimates that, based on visits to its websites, “purchase intent” is down 11 per cent from the average in June, before the cash-for-clunkers programme began."

The Costco program is great and will get you most of the available discount. Our family has purchased 3 new Hondas (Odyssey, Pilot and Accord) through the Costco program and each time the price received was near the better end of prices that were being quoted on sites such as this. Some dealers messed around with the pricing terms, however, and played the typical games of trying to charge for pinstripes, wheel locks or other items already included in a given trim package. Needless to say, we took our business elsewhere.

In addition to the negotiated price, typically a few hundred dollars under invoice, dealers should be willing to give you all dealer cash/incentives and remove any items that are not standard on the vehicle (or not charge for them).

It's 2009 Odyssey EX. No options.

Need community support to decide if I go to the dealer today to buy...

Living in N. Atlanta/Alpharetta/Cumming/Buford GA area. Tax 7% included in the $28,000 drive out price.

    Thanks in advance.

We benefited a lot from this forum, and wanted to thank everybody who shared info. here. We bought a 2010 Ex-L with Res (plus Tinted window, splash guards, cargo tray, wheel lock) last week. Base price is 32900 (includes everything before tax and title). We paid 36200 OTD (32900+2700 tax+600 title&registration). At that time, there were only two 2010 EX-L with Res in the Phoenix area and cash for clunckers was still going on, so I assume the price can go even lower. We need to move on, so didn't wait for a better price.

My sense is that the base price (i.e., all that you pay before tax and title/registration) should be no more than manufacture invoice +designition+ a few hundred dollars. Now the cash for clunckers is over. You should expect a base price around 32400 (manufacture invoice +designition) or lower. Never pay for accessaries that are already installed, they should always be free. The dealer should have at least $1000 holdback (3%) as profit if they sell at 32400. So, at the right moment and the right dealership, you can probably get 32000 or 31800 as base price, depending on how desprate the dealer is...

I would not recommend everybody to always look for the best price though, because the dealers will make you feel exhausted. If you are busy with other things in your life, consdier paying a few hundred dollars more and move on. Dealers will cut deals at quite different prices in different weeks, depending on supply and demand, and their own pressures. They just will not sell the car to you at a low price in certain weeks, and if you cannot wait, just pay them a few hundred dollars more, be happy and move on! Good luck to everyone!
  • bigdon2bigdon2 Member Posts: 12
Does you OTD price include tax and title? This sounds like an unbelievablly low price if it's after tax and title....
  • bigdon2bigdon2 Member Posts: 12
I got one last week at 32900 (includes tags and everything before tax and title). The price can go lower for sure (invoice should be 32400 not 32767), but this is a reasonable price (probably 600-700 above invoice). Be aware of the dealers' tricks, and don't pay for any advertisement fees, accessaries, etc. Also be aware that the dealer will have at least $1000 profit if they sell at invoice (i.e., 32400). Very often dealers will give you some of the profit to boost sales.

If you cannot wait, buy it and be happy. If you think a few hundred dollars less would worth the hassle of waiting a while, probably wait and you can get a better deal. Good luck!

Bought 2010 touring ody last night (white), didn't feel like waiting for better deal, paid $38,700 base price (not including TTL which ended up at $42,700 OTD) in northern california. Above invoice, but below MSRP, so I pulled the trigger.
Great car, just thought I'd let people know to give you more data!
    good luck out there

Yes - I'd say that's a good deal for an EX. I was ready to purchase 2009 Ody EX for $26.5K including destination but before taxes, title & fees a couple of weeks ago. That works out to a little over $28K with your 7% tax added in. In the end the dealership actually sourced a 2010 and sold it to me for the same price(?) - I think that's below invoice for a 2010 unless there's a dealer incentive on the 2010s, too.
  • nobonobo Member Posts: 305
I contacted Costco when shopping late last month. Results were a disaster. Dealer emailed once for more info. I emailed color and options and never heard back. On Costco's followup they told me to call an 800 # for other possible dealers. Decided it was not worth it to have another layer in the buying process.

"The Japanese are very smart people." Well, I now guess we now understand why the domestic auto industry has failed - it has less smart people running the show. I suggest you do some quick research on the state of the Japanese economy over the past 30 years. You might also want to realize that adding racial stereotypes to any argument tends to diminish anything else you might say that does make sense.

The point of my post is that Honda will make as many Odysseys as they think they can sell this year. The actual number produced will fluctuate based on demand. Anyone telling you what Honda is going to do as far as production for 2010 is simply speculating. Initial production numbers for 2010 were surely created long before the CFC program was created. You can be sure that adjustments will be made to their production plans now based on the artificial bump in demand. The keys of the industry are profit and market share. Those two factors coupled with an accurate determination of demand will help create production numbers.

I've been looking for a 2009 EX-L but finally gave up because of low stock and C4C program...This is the lowest quote I got so far for a 2010 EX-L (without RES). Is this a fair price or a good deal? Thanks a lot in advance.

    Base Price 29419.00
    Destination 710.00
    Accessories 0.00
    Taxable Total 30129.00
    Tax 903.87
    Tag/Title 68.00
    Doc Fee 399.00
    Out of Door Price 31499.87

If they follow Nissans strategy last year, they will also increase prices throughout the model year then offer a rebate or customer cash. Smoke and mirrors -- works every time. Matching supply to demand is the wave of the future. Every effort will be made to be razor sharp in that regard. Limited inventory at the dealer level creates the illusion of scarcity with more profit on fewer sales. What do you think the bean counters prefer? More sales and less profit or fewer sales and more profit for the model year. This only works if the car line is perceived as vastly superior by enough buyers who feel the higher price is still good value. Those big discounts on Honda odyssey's and pilots are likely gone forever. There are however, lower priced alternatives -- you are free to spend your money at the store of your choosing. Folks who post on Edmunds looking for great deals aren't likely a big percentage of buyers anyway.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Doc fee $399 ? Illinois caps those at $150. You didn't post the msrp and my guess is that the quote won't be honored.Msrp should be $34100.You got 4k off msrp. You should be running to the dealer to close the deal. I never trust quotes until I have a signed price sheet with everything in writing.
  • laplaslaplas Member Posts: 10
    Thanks for your input.
The msrp for 2010 EX-L without RES is 33405, and invoice is 30261 (not including $710 destination fee). Here in North Carolina (at least Charlotte area) almost all Honda dealers want to charge $399 doc fee or admin fee whatever they called...and some of them even wanted to charge me $499 for that.

Ended up buying a new 2009 EX at 27,500 drive out in Atlanta GA area. Dealer is honest and honored the price when on site. Overall no hassles.
  • buyodysseybuyodyssey Member Posts: 5
Thanks for your reply. You get a better deal for a 2010 model. Did they make the mistake at the beginning? I ended upp buying a 2009 EX at 27,500 drive out last night, as mentioned in a separate post.
  • buyodysseybuyodyssey Member Posts: 5
BTW, no there are no incentives for 2010 models yet. So that's really a good deal from that dealer.

Just picked up a white Touring for 38k includes freight. It was about 1k over invoice. Honda was very busy as there were 4 or 5 buyers in the 3 hours I was there. Three of the buyers bought used Odysseys since the dealer sold me the only 2010 they had. The touring in white looks very sharp. We came out of a 08 Highlander which we liked but needed the extra hauling space.

Well I read this board for several nights sitting in the hospital after our 2nd was born. I realized with 2 kids and a dog I needed a van

I went to several dealers, played the email game with quotes but the dam C4C took all the inventory so the dealers were greedy. I wanted an invoice transaction. Nope did not happen, this was the best I could get, many factor was wanted an ex-l with res in 3 certain colors. Coleman Honda had gun metal on the truck:

    msrp 35715
    BS add ons 699
    dest 710
    total 37124

The lowest I could get them 33100

Oh due to lack of sleep they sold me what i thought was Honda Care extended warranty, it was Caregard (Allstate) After research they were way to expensive Going on Monday to cancel.

Thanks! Glad to hear you've had a good experience. And I was curious if dealer incentives were added on top of the Costco negotiated price discounts. It may be worth waiting for dealer incentives to come back.
  • calnativecalnative Member Posts: 6
As is often the case I guess it depends on what salesperson you end up dealing with no matter how good the program. Another commenter here had a great experience and used Costco 3 times. I'll try it and hope I get a decent sales rep.
  • nobonobo Member Posts: 305
    Ok, good luck with Costco.

I would suggest sending emails to internet sales people at your selected Honda stores and compare the price with any you get from the Costco program.

We decided to keep our Odyssey till the 2011 models with new styling are available. In the mean time we did buy a new set of Michelin X tires from Costco. That is a great tire, much better than the Good Year tires that they replaced.

I think you are spot when dealing with any sales person and dealership. I've had good and bad within the same dealer so go figure.

I just bought a new Touring (16 miles on the OD when I took possession) through Costco. I entered my request on a Sunday evening, and had an email reply the same night with contact information, and an explanation of the process.

I contacted the Sales person Costco identified the next morning and took a test drive that evening.

MSRP including destination was $41215.00 (non-PAX).

    Costco Price was $37300.00

They had already put on Wheel Locks and they threw them into the deal no extra charge. (supposedly $80.00 option)

I decided with 2 DVD's (Nav and RES) plus a CD and electronic everything to go with the Warranty for 84 mos and 70,000. I explained that I would go on the internet and look for the best price, so we did it right from the dealership. I found this for $850 and he honored it, showed me his cost sheet and it was $835 so he made $15.00 for the paperwork plus any commission they may pay him.

I added splash guards, air deflector and cargo tray to the order so that they are also covered under the 36/36,000 warranty on the car. If I bought separately from part later they would only have the standard 12 mo warranty. True or not I was getting them anyway so I'm sure that I have the 36/36 from the dealer anyway.

Sales tax was $1911 and Lic, Title and Tire Tax was $187.15, and the doc fee was $60.00.

All with no haggling and very transparent. They had the Costco paperwork, that they had to show me per the Costco program rules, and they rest was just their practice.

When I picked the car up the next day everything was done and ready. The salesman then proceeded to program the Bluetooth for both on my cells, the Homelink for my door opener, the XM, and set-up the key for the automatic settings. We went over the voice commands to operated most items, hands free dialing, etc. and he took probably 40 minutes with me going over everything.

So from my perspective, this was a win win for me. I had purchased 3 Toyotas from this dealership family but this was my 1st Honda so it wasn't like I had a relationship with the salesman or Honda, butr they treated me with respect and as a thank you for my business they even added a bottle of touch up paint in the glove box.

Hopefully your experience will be as good or better.

I just wanted to share my experinece with this dealership. I contacted them about a 2010 Honda Odyssey EX-L with RES over the weekend. I spoke to the fleet sales manager. He had the exact vehicle I was looking for but stated it will arive on Monday (2 days). We nogotiated the price at $33,200 + TTL. I stated that I wanted an e-mail confirmation to ensure that the facts were correct. I waited but by Monday morning I never erecived one so I e-mailed the fleet manager requesting confirmation of negotiated price and wanted total OTD price with TTL. I also looked up yelp's reputation for this dealership (they had horrible reviews!!!, now I was concerned). No reply. I called him later that day after I got no response to my e-mail and he stated, "yeah, no problem, $33,200 for the car + TTL". I again asked for e-mail confirmation as I didn't want to drive 1 hour to get harrassed (especially given yelp's reviews). Luckily I found out a friend's friend also works at the dealership and I asked him to confirm the price and to send confirmation e-mail. He called back and stated he could not sell me that car and could not reply to my email at that price because it was the only Odyssey and could only sell it for $35,700 (basically MSRP).

I guess I knee it was coming given the fact that he didn't want to confirm through e-mail but I this is a very shady dealership. They should be avoided at all costs (read the Yelp reviews).

I recently purchased a Bali Blue 2010 Honda Odyssey at DCH Honda in New Jersey. I did this as a clunker deal, trading my beat up 89 Bronco II for 3,500 and got the following deal:

    Price: 30,145
    Destination: 710
    Doc Chgs: 249
    Est Reg/Title 200
    Out of State MV 53
    NYS Tax: 2,738
    Total 34,095

    Good deal?

If you want a minivan and want to save big test ride the vw routan. If you keep it 7-8 years it's worth a look. $7500 off-- S + res = 21k se+res 27600 sel+res = 29830. Consumer reports and other reviewers are positive on the car. 3 years free maintenence then you can get them serviced cheap at chrysler. Just a thought.

    Update:

I just wanted to update this post:

I eventually bought the car from them, apparently due to a slight misunderstanding as noted below.

The dealer called me on wednesday and wanted to now if I was still coming up to purchase the vehicle (1 hour away). I stated I would not given I had no confirmation on price (I do not want to haggle when I get up there). He stated that he didn't want to e-mail a confirmed price quote and shop it around to other dealers. I understood his point of view but only so far (butr just a little). His job is to be a internet sales manager. How else do you confirm prices(throught e-mail), especially as a internet sales manager. I did shop around my area before I called him and for the color I wanted with the options I wanted, this was the best deal I could get and I stated that in my first conversation that I would agree to purchase as long as he confirmed the price through e-mail. He eventually did.

So all in all not bad and I got a fair deal, not the best, but a fair deal, and I'm happy with that and my new Odyssey. I know we (carspace forum followers) are generally more informed on deals and pricing then most others that shop for cars but what do you expect as a internet salesman. We want good prices and no haggling with easy transactions. Thats the new internet age and levels the playing field.

Oh, by the way, he tried to add additional items to the car even after he confirmed my final OTD price (wheel locks, mud guards, alarm). I eventually said Ok as it would take time to remove (go figure). An extra $149. Oh well.

Thanks Carspace (and posters out there sharing their experiences) for all your help!!!

Thanks for the details of your successful purchase. Sounds like you would recommend this dealership family as you have bought several automobiles from them. Can you tell me what dealership you bought from through Costco?
  • calnativecalnative Member Posts: 6
You can't be in California if your sales tax was $1,911 on a $37,000 purchase. In California sales taxes are near 10% now.
