It seems that there are significant regional differences...Just bought an EXL with Navi in White/beige (no extras) in Sacramento. Bought from Maita Honda but Roseville was same. Checked with multiple dealers in Northern California--had a popular color combo so most dealers did not have it. Called around and worked with the 2 that gave best price. Probably could have negotiated more and gotten better price but felt this was decent.
    Here are the numbers:

    MSRP $37,855
    Paid $33,789 (NOT inc. destination/taxes/ fees /extras)
    OTD 36,794
Gave me $7,750 on 05 Odyssey trade in with 120K miles.

If I had to do again, I would read more from this this blog, get a printed quote from Spreen in Southern California and either get from Spreen or see if anyone would match up here.

    Hope this helps!

Bought an Odyssey with Navi in Sacramento yesterday-did not go with the warranty offered at dealership. Instead did some research at home and found (from this blog!) that Saccucci offers the Hondacare (120K miles, $0 deductible) for $1295. They can sell to CA vehicles-- and it is much better coverage than the CNA one offered by my dealer and much better price than Hondacare policy from local Honda dealers.

    Hi,
Thank you for that great post. I do not post here but given the great suggestions you and others mentioned before, let me contribute. Also, there are very few posts from southeast michigan (metro detroit), so i want to assist those from here for their future buys.

I recently researched and bought an Odyssey 2012 Touring. I used the method you mentioned with some minor differences.

"2. At that point, select "request a quote" next to each dealer after you have list of dealers"
Oddly while i got a list of 15 or 20 dealers on searching for dealers, when i selected request a quote next to one of the choices, i would have to fill out my particulars, tel etc but then it would ask me again to choose a dealer. Here it only listed the five closest dealers and so while i could select any of those, the rest was not available.

To get around this, i noted the zip codes of the number 6 onwards dealers that i was willing to drive to and put their zip code or address to get those dealers as options to send emails to. I had to play with the address, zip codes as the software sometimes was too smart; even if i put part of my address, it would go to the earlier 5 dealers. May be it was using cookies from my browser.

In any case, i was able to mail about 7 dealers. All but one sent me quotes. Three were good and i pursued only the lowest two. Interestingly e-prices ranged from early 38s to very low 37s before state taxes, reg. When one offered me 37K before tax, title and license, i agreed. The other dealer agreed to also consider that price but i did not pursue as they did not have the colors i was looking for. After i bought the car, atleast one other dealer claimed he could match my price but i was not interested in a prolonged negotiation.

So final tally was 37K (including destination, doc fees) plus mi taxes (6%), license, registration, title for a Touring Cherry Red. By the way, smoky topaz seems very popular from talking to the dealers at this moment. So harder to bargain on that color.

The whole process was relatively painless and involved no haggling. So much better than haggling at the dealership!! Oh and costco price is higher. The place that does costco pricing would not tell me their price unless i came in but said they were higher than what i was getting. He even scoffed that my price was impossible for anyone!

Moral of the story, use above technique, keep communication by emails, ask for all fees to be included pre taxes. Even if you are a buyer that does not like to haggle, you will get a pretty good price with this method. Probably the great negotiators here on these forums will do even better. You know you have a good price when some dealers claim your price is impossible!

Now i hope the car works well for us.
Thanks everyone and good luck. :)

I have been reading through the forums getting an idea of pricing but I thought I would post. I am looking for a 2012 EX-L with Nav in the Seattle area.

Tried contacting some dealerships through various websites and so far I have been quoted $34,469. Which seems higher than some of you have spent. Wondering if anyone has recently had luck getting a better deal in the Seattle area.

On a side note: I have time and can make this purchase any time before the end of the year. Is there a better time to purchase? I have heard to wait for the 2013's and also to possibly wait for the holidays (when every one is spending money on gifts instead of new cars). Anyhow, any advice would be helpful.

July 9th there are 2 promos that expire, one is the .9 financing and the other is a manufacturer incentive, the former is a personal issue, the later means that effectively the van will cost the dealer $750 or so dollars more after July 9. Not to say there will not be another deal but this is pretty good
  • delajuandelajuan Member Posts: 5
Does that mean the $32500 for EX-L w/ RES already has that incentive with it already? Or can it get lower than 32500? I would imagine prices will still come down since it is nearing end of the month and also end of quarter.
  • delajuandelajuan Member Posts: 5
can you please send which dealer in maryland you bought, thanks
  • bigtxbigtx Member Posts: 16
It does but I suspect it does not include the Destination charge. 33,200 is about what my information suggests is the actual cost to dealer under the present promotions with destination charge, add the destination to the 32500 around this site and you see that the dealer in those cases is making about $100 on the car itself. The timing may make a dealer more willing to cut margins but they are not going to lose money.

Is this price for touring elite? And could you please reveal what city and dealership did you buy from? Thanks much.

I just filled an order with the dealer for 2012 odyssy EX-L (have to wait 4 to 5 days for pick up, as the dealer don't have the color of my choice and he is going to get the one) and payed the deposit. My OTD price was 33,300 including wheel locks, roof rails, 4 oil changes & two tire rotations. is this a good deal?
  • ybenyben Member Posts: 1
    Hi rameshcm,
Can you pls reveal which dealership you got this deal in NJ?
    Thanks,

Just picked up a 2012 EX-L at Mahwah Honda in NJ.

    MSRP: $35,685 (pre-April pricing)
    Selling price: $31050 including destination
    *not* including licence/registration

    Dealer doc: $199

I could have purchased on the above numbers but ended up leasing. Zero down, all rolled into the lease for a monthly payment of $420/month.

Mahwah Honda is keen to deal and move their inventory. Email their internet department.

    Friends,

I need serious advise from you. I am trying to buy new 2012 Odyssey EX-L (No Nav and Res. It is just basic EX-L model). I got the best quote from the dealer for 32,400 (Including destination fee). In additions to this price, I need to pay 6.5% Minnesota state tax and the license plate fees. Please let me know if this is good price. Please share your buying experience.
  • dodgehappydodgehappy Member Posts: 118
Sounds like that pricing for an exl may have some room to do better. I know location can play a part in the price you can get, but I see poster before you just picked up an exl in NJ for bit over 31000. I got one in Ohio at the end of May for 30500.
  • zackley123zackley123 Member Posts: 2
Well, the best prices appear to be about 1500-2000 less.

30500-30700 are the lowest on this forum and I too and shopping for the EX-L (and an accord so trying a 2 car combo deal). You should be able to get internet quotes (including Destination) at 31K before TTL (tax, title and license plates). your OTD should be approx 33K and some change for doc fee title etc. Ask for OTD price and if its at 33K or just above your doing very well. Patience is the key but you are timing well with end of month coming and end of quarter. You could do well this week with the calendar in your favor. 750 cash back to dealer is due to expire as is 0.9 on 7/9/12. Next promotion could be better or worse depending on their targets and recent performance. Good Luck and let us all know how it goes.

Wanted to thank all who have shared here. We followed the suggestions and tied down the details of the deal before visiting or speaking to anyone at this dealership.

MSRP (incl. dest chrg 810) 44,485

    Paid Vehicle 40,100
    Fees 171
    Tax (7% IN) 2,807

    Out the door - 43,078

To the penny of what was agreed by email. No push to add anything at closing. We already knew they'd try to sell the extended to which we just said no. Best no pressure experience of buying a car I've had.

The dealer was Penske Honda in Indianapolis. They were very courteous and professional. One additional thing. We heard numbers are down this month so this would be an opportunity for a good deal. (thanks "wandering burr" for your post of May 31, 2012 - I followed you suggestions and felt prepared as a result.)

    Hope this helps someone.

Just sharing my experience buying honda odyssey 2012 touring. First i went online and have quote all honda dealer for honda odyssey 2012 touring.. Each dealer giving different price. And i when to the lowest and that Spreen Honda dealer, quoted me for $35,995 thats the lowest queto i had found. And then response some other dealer if they can match the price.. Some dealer did. Got three dealer response and they can match the price. Not to bad and i don't have to drive all the way to loma linda for the lowest price. Got the best quote, right color and close where i leave.. Total i paid $39.200.00 including everything ( tax, license + 7 yrs /100k miles with maxguard, secure wheel nuts, storage mat and crossbar and rack.. Best deal of all. Way to do it just negotiate the price, you already the number ( price/quote ) so ask the best deal, try to earn business with them that not other dealer they can give you.. Anyway when to robertson honda. Love it the price and interest for 0.9% for 60 month.. Thanks robertson honda of north hollywood

Just found this forum and wanted to get the gallery's thoughts. The following prices are from two lowest dealers I've been dealing with and do not include destination, tax, title, etc. I live in and the dealers are from the Chicago suburbs.

    Touring
$36,573 + included options (already installed by dealer) are splash guards, wheel locks, and trunk rack @ $499 for a total of $37,072

    $36,323 no options added

The cheaper one is a good hour or more away while the higher one is 5 min. I already asked the one if he could keep it $36573, I wouldnt expect him to match the other since his has options and he said no, they are already taking a loss.

I don't think I really need or want any of the options but I really dont want to take a road trip to save $749 on a 72 month loan. What do you guys think about the quotes and which is a better deal at the end of the day?

I told the dealer I would pay 27500 OTD with my trade of a 2005 EXL RES with 117k.

They made it to $27602...so I took it. Here's the breakdown:

    Price: 32326
8/120k honda care: 1546 (this was the only option I wanted included in the price)
Footprints: 99 (I told them I didn't want this, but they included anyway, some sort of theft thing
    Fees: 599.50
Bus Tax: 76 have no idea what this is
    Total: 34647
    Less trade: 9000
    Plus tax: 1955

    OTD: 27602

To be honest, I had a bottom line I wanted, so I could care less what they called the various fees and how they were applied. The finance guy laughed and said I got a good deal...seems that way. The original quote was 28109, without the warranty. NO installed options, just as it came.

Based on my experience with my 2005, I would not have bought this vehicle without the extended warranty, and only Honda Care.
  • dinehsdinehs Member Posts: 11
wow... Your post is making reconsider the extended warranty and Honda care thing again. So based on your experiences you really think it worth the extra cost. If you didn’t have good experience with your 2005, why did buy the same vehicle again and didn’t consider alternative options?

    Congrats on your new Odyssey!

I just purchased the Touring Elite with OTD price of $43k including a cargo tray and Cargo Organizer (about $380 in accessories) in Bay Area, CA. I noticed that the Elite pricings quoted on this forum in MD seems to be $2-3k less than CA. I have not seen any recent postings for an Elite in the Bay Area. Can anyone comment if I paid a good price for this car? Most internet managers quoted me $44k + Tax, license, fees and destination charge. Thanks!

Which dealer in Bay Area did you buy your Touring Elite from? Can you help me provide the purchase price details (base price, fee, tax, etc...)? I am looking to buy the Touring Elite in Bay Area also.

    Thanks.

Because I actually LOVE the vehicle, just don't trust the transmission. I did drive the Dodge/Chrysler van and it just doesn't compare. The Toyota has the worst fuel economy of all the vans, the VW is actually a dodge, Nissan I don't really know much about, but they don't rate well and there are no other options for a minivan. (ps...drove the Mazda5 and loved it, but too small) I have a family of 5 all the time and 6 sometimes. All the crossovers lose their cargo area when using the third seat. So a minivan was really our only option. The Odyssey is the best in that class, IMO.

Here's what they repaired/replaced on my 2005 under the extended care warranty: 4 power steering pumps, catalytic converter, repaired the door mechanism when the auto open quit working, repaired the dvd player, steering rack. And that's just what I can think of. The transmission torque converter started going out at 97k, confirmed at 107k, outside the warranty period. I am trying to get some of my money back right now since I paid to have it repaired before the current TSB on it was issued that changed the starndard warranty to 105k for the torque converter - June 2012. The reason I traded is because after having it rebuilt, it went out again 3 months later, another rebuild, then again 2 months after that - so 3 rebuilds in 5 months and 6000 miles (which that wasn't Honda's fault - independent shop - who fixed it each time under the transmission repair warranty) but leaving me stranded on the hwy twice 100 miles from home. Just didn't trust it to get me to Florida in July.

ps. check out the odyclub.com forum and it will give you an idea of some of the problems the van has and the frequency, plus lots of insights...
  • delajuandelajuan Member Posts: 5
If the original quote was 28109 w/o the warranty, how were you able to bring the cost down and still manage to add the warranty costing 1546. You must be salesman too. Let us know how you did that.

We bought the EXL w/RES (Smoky Topaz w/ Truffle interior) this past weekend. I will follow up with a detailed post with my process/experience - it's long, so I thought I'd post the critical numbers first.

*Of note, is that the comparison shopping/negotiation period lasted about 2 weeks for me and there was quite a bit of back and forth - I've been told by a few dealers that I got a great deal that they could not beat, and some wouldn't even match it.

    -------------------------------------
    EXL with RES (no accessories)
    -------------------------------------
Vehicle Price: $31,300.00 (They told me they were losing $698 on this deal)
    Destination: $830.00
    NJ Tire Fees: $7.50 (1.50/tire)
    Reg./Title Fees: $399.00
    NJCAR DSP: $8.00
    Doc Fees: $199.00
    Taxes: $2,249.10
    --------------------------------------
    TOTAL: $34,992.60
    --------------------------------------

I bought my car from Mahwah Honda in Mahwah, NJ. I had a pleasant experience when I went to pick up the car and I would recommend them, with the stipulation that you do your negotiating via email.

:) Thank you to this forum and the posters who really helped educate me in the whole online buying process, this was the first car that I have personally negotiated for and bought and it was a great experience (though frustrating/stressful at times). Can't wait to buy my next car :shades:

So, here is the detailed version of my Odyssey buying experience. I am sharing it with the forum with the thought that it might help someone else. I started car shopping late May, right around Memorial Day weekend. Although, I felt the typical showroom pressure to buy from the salespeople I knew I wasn’t ready, that’s when I turned to the internet and found this forum. I actually started emailing dealerships in early June. I cut to the chase and told them that I was planning on purchasing in the next 7-10 days and that I was shopping the tristate area (NJ/PA/DE) for the absolute best price. I insisted they breakdown the price by: base price, destination, reg./title fees, doc fees, and taxes. Some obliged right away, others followed up with the details after I insisted that they needed to break it down in order for me to even consider them. Only one dealership did not follow up.

Initially I emailed 10 dealerships in NJ, PA and DE, the criteria was that they had to be a drivable distance, but that was flexible depending on the actual price difference. The numbers I was getting in the NJ area seemed higher than reported on the forum, so I decided to broaden the search area and emailed a few dealers in MD, VA and White Allen in Dayton, OH. I basically did this because I needed a “BEST PRICE” to take to my local dealers. White Allen quoted $31,000 (incl. base and destination; +TTL+doc) for the EX-L (for RES I would have to add $1500) which became my low ball offer. I was hoping to get $30,500 from them, but invoice prices went up on post-April units due to a mfg. price increase. I emailed the local dealers and instead of giving them this price (since I was focused on getting the EX-L for under $31,000) I told them that the car was being purchased for under $30,000 for EX-L and around $31,500 for EX-L with RES (in CA, OH, MD & VA).

They balked, but I clearly stated that I had a quote from a MD dealer for less and that I was willing to drive down for the savings. My local dealer warned me against the hidden charges and how “concerned” he was that they were going to change their prices, add on other fees – I told them that I had requested total transparency and had every quote itemize all costs, so I was confident that I wasn’t being taken for a ride. They gave me their best offer (they are definitely the most competitive in pricing in my area) but it was more than I was willing to pay.

The next day I emailed two North Jersey dealerships and told them that I was going to make a decision in the next 72 hours and that I was pretty much set on driving to MD for the car unless a local dealership made me a better offer. I contacted Paul Miller Honda in West Caldwell and Mahwah Honda in Mahwah, NJ. Paul Miller came back with their best price (which was still not as low as I wanted; when I pressed them for their lowest price, they gave me a final number ).
The rep from Mahwah misread my “offer to beat” - I had written that I had a quote for [ $31,500 (incl. base+destination+doc) +TTL ] which he “misinterpreted” as 31,500 plus, destination and doc and TTL and said he could match it. When he called back with the numbers I told him his mistake and told him to make his best offer. We went back and forth and he called back with his final offer of $32,329 (incl. destination and doc) + TTL. I emailed this quote to Paul Miller and my rep said that the offer sounded too good to be true, but that in fact if it was true that it was a great deal that they wouldn’t be able to match, let alone beat.

I called Burns Honda and after some back and forth they said they would match it plus the cost of dealer installed accessories ($695 pkg, reduced to $400), but I would have to take an in-stock vehicle. They didn’t have my color and after all I went through I did not want to compromise on that. So, I went with Mahwah and had a very pleasant experience with the sales staff and finance office. They tried to sell me window etching and an extended warranty, but did not push once I declined. I would definitely recommend them, and it seems like a few people have bought vehicles from them on this forum.

I fully expect that prices will come down, maybe even as early as July 4th weekend, and definitely closer to the release of the 2013 models; but 2012 stock is limited in my color and I actually needed a reliable family car to enjoy the summer so we bit the bullet. I think I got the lowest price I could right now, for my region and am satisfied with the outcome. :shades:

You buying experience mimic mine down the the NJ dealers that you worked with.

Congrats on a great price. There would have been holdback on that car of around $700 so Mahwah were probably not losing as much as you think. My EX-L negotiations were slightly hampered by a trade-in..... anything given on the new vehicle would likely be taken back on the trade. It all comes down to your personal comfort with the deal offered.

I will echo the great delivery by Mahwah. One of the best experiences I have had buying a car.

Bought the car yesterday from Mahwah honda for $30560 (includes destination, wheel locks and cargo mat), $33300 OTD with 7% NJ tax, dealer doc fee and dmv fees and also got 0.9% for 5 years. Everything negotiated in emails beforehand and it took around 1.5 hours at the dealership to do the paperwork and pick up the car.

Hi Queenofhearts, which dealer in Bay Area are you buying it from.
    Thank you.
  • dinehsdinehs Member Posts: 11
I also have rented a new, with only 60 miles, Dodge van for month and I didn’t like or the shifting of its transmission. Then, I rented another new, with 1.2K miles, Town & country van for another month and I liked the options but the transmission was horrible. I even asked the Chrysler dealer about it and I didn’t get any reasonable answer but they emphasized that it’s under warranty for 100K miles. The Toyota was just okay for me and I was not blessed with the trim and finishing. So, I as well ended up with an Odyssey because it was the only good option left.

When my wife asked me why I ended up buying an Odyssey while knowing all the issues, especially the transmission torque converter, I simply answered with “for the same reason that you bought an iPhone 4s knowing that it’s only 3G with many other limitations.”

Thank you for your reply and the information. I will be buying the extended coverage soon. I hope that we all have better experience with this new model.

Does anyone have recent experience with buying Odyssey EXL with RES at any of the local dealerships recently. 32,900 (price + destination) is the lowest I have been quoted. Pretty much all the local dealers are in that same range +/- ~100 bucks. Anyone else have any experience with purchasing Ody?

There is some room asking one month free payment if your offer is acceptable. In fact, I'm in the market of buying 2012 EX in Indiana. My quote was 29,501 with 0.9 for 60 months. That's what I try to reduce the OTD price. Good luck
  • dr_karen_gdr_karen_g Member Posts: 2
I disagree! I had a great experience. The salesman(Angel) didn't BS me; he really helped me figure out which SUV I should buy (and I'm so happy with my Pilot that I don't plan to sell it for another 60,000 miles). No one pressured me. And the price I paid (for an XL with all the upgrades) was lower than I would have paid at the 4 other dealerships I went to. (If this place was the rip-off that others said it was, it wouldn't be crowded every day. And I certainly wouldn't have bought my truck there.)

When you buy a car or a truck, the point is to get the best possible price and deal--and the only way to do this is by (1) researching everything about the vehicle you want and what it should cost, (2) going to as many dealers as possible to find the one who will give you the best deal on everything you want, and (3) negotiating knowledgeably with the salesperson to get him or her to get the sales manager to lower the price as much as possible. That’s what I did and that’s why I bought my Pilot from Paragon. The salesman was very polite and attentive (and patiently answered my questions and took me out for test drives). But even if he wasn’t, I still would have bought the truck from him because Paragon offered the lowest price. What I paid Paragon for a new Pilot (with all the upgraded features) was several thousand dollars less than I would have paid at local and regional competitors. I had no problems with the salespeople, and I got the truck I wanted at the price I wanted. (And it’s “held up” perfectly despite my driving on bumpy roads that could knock the shocks off a trailer and in “stop and go” traffic on the LIE which should have worn down the brakes but didn’t.)

I got a quote of $32146 from Spreen Honda in Los Angeles. I live in the Sacramento area (Northern CA) and have been to all the dealers...the lowest quote I have from a local dealer is $32446 ((price + destination)....he is not ready to budge, he may match Spreen quote if I go one more time but he will definitely not go any lower. The highest I have offered him so far is $31750 (price + destination). Any tips/suggestions on how to get him to agree to something under $32K? If not, any other tips/suggestions while going through financing/accessories? We will be going with the 0.9% honda financing and have a quote for extended warranty which we will get him to match.

I would also like a recommendation on which accessories are a must or nice to have based on people's experience here. We were considering the protection package and wheel locks.

    Thank you for your help!

Picked up my Touring on Thursday, in and out of the dealer in under two hours. $36,922 is what I paid including the splash mats, cargo matt, and wheel locks. I was OTD at $41,309 which included the extended warranty ($965) and 4 year dealer service plan ($432 for oil changes, tire roations, etc). The best part is the dealer I went through bought the .9 from Honda so I got 0% for 60 months. For those that are buying, check the other discussions regarding the extended warranty and get some on line quotes. I floored my finance guy when he was asking $2100 for it and I pulled out quotes for $1100. Got him down to $965 for 7 years/70k miles. It's not HondaCare but it is Toyota's Manufacturer's warranty (my Honda dealer is owned by a really big Toyota dealer).
