Which begs the question whether there are any cars currently produced for North America that don't meet minimum California emission standards (ignoring the LEV, etc. standards)?

Today I purchased an '03 Odyssey EXL-RES for $1,750 under MSRP (with no destination fee). My out the door price was $29,912. This includes the mini for $28,150, $50 doc prep, tax (6%) of $1,692, and $20 for title & insurance.

I worked with Rick Moulden at the Superior Honda Dealership in Cincinnati, OH...he could not have made the process any easier. Most of the negotiating was done over the phone!

I got repeated calls from a Tracy dealer since yesterday. I called them a month ago asked about the odyssey, so they got my number. First he`s trying to get me on MSRP, then offered $750 under. I said that's not gonna work, he just left a message a few miniutes ago with $1000 under MSRP.

Hopefully this is the beginning of a trend. I'll probably wait see the new Toyota, but if the price on Ody drops a lot.....

I just paid 23,500 for an LX that stickers for
24,800. $1300 savings isnt bad in itself for
a base model, but I also got the dealer installed
keyless entry included in the price (a $300 retail
item). This was at Buckeye Honda in Lancaster
    Ohio.

A little tip....there are MANY hungry salesmen
in the Columbus Ohio area (Honda East, Hugh White
Honda, Hinderer Honda). If you're looking for
an Odyssey in this area, I highly suggest you
play these 4 dealers off of eachother. You will
have no problem beating my deal.

Judging by the weather reports from there, I'd guess showroom traffic isn't booming either!

Hi if anybody can tell me what a good price on a 2003 ex-l res lease would be.
    I would be very grateful
I'm looking at about 2500 down with 3/36
    Thanks for all your help

What is the best rate you have been able to negotiate for financing your Ody? We will pick up ours next week and will probably get a pre-approved through a place like PeopleFirst (4.89%) and try to negotiate from there. It would be helpful for me to know what the best rate to shoot for was. Thanks In Advance.
  • clpurnellclpurnell Member Posts: 1,083
I got 3.49% in december but that was a special rate. I think they will do low fours normally.

Look at message #3262. You can get 3.99 A.P.R. for up to 60 months from Ohio Central Savings. I would use that as a bargaining point to start from...IMHO. Good luck with your new Ody. I've had mine since December 9th. So far, so good.

For those of you who have purchased your Honda Odyssey out-of-town, what has been the reaction of your local dealers when you bring your out-of-town purchase in for repairs or maintenance? I hear some dealer service departments are very competitive and are more than happy to service a car purchased at another dealer. But, I worry that there would be some resentment by our local dealer if I brought in a brand new car that was obviously recently purchased out-of-town. I would be interested in hearing any stories or advice you might offer regarding the treatment you received from your local dealer service departments. Thanks for your help!
  • rainbow24rainbow24 Member Posts: 26
If you purchase out of town and bring it in locally for service work, you will be on an appointment basis. If there's and emergency and you need something done quick, go to your out of town dealer and get them to get you head of line priviledges at your local dealer, good luck there. If you buy locally you get a lot of inside help and favors when needed, buy out of town and you are at the mercy of the dreaded appointment book at the local dealer.

Just words of advice, I've seen it all happen. Buy here, work here, live here, get favors here.

It does not matter where you buy your new Honda, any Honda dealer is obliged to perform warranty service on your vehicle.

As for your "purchasing dealer" giving you preferential treatment, as rainbow24 suggests, is largely false. I buy my new Honda's at the dealer that will give me the best price, period. I take that car to my local Honda dealer, and they give me the same level of service for vehicles I have purchased at that dealership.

I have several friends and relatives that own Honda's, and never heard of this type of preferential or discriminatory treatment.

Bottom line - go for the best deal. Car salesmen like to perpetuate this myth that you will only get good service at the dealership if you buy the car there.

...Boston is a very competitive market with more than 10 Honda stores within the 495 outer belt. IMHO, it's the attitude of the service dept as opposed to buy here/not buy here syndrome.

I've bought my last 2 Hondas at one dealer near home and service at one near my office. Never have I been given poor service treatment because I bought elsewhere. Rather, the preferential treatment I get from my servicing dealer is due to my being a regular customer with normal expectations. I am courteous to the service writers and ensure them high marks on their surveys (because I can honestly do so). If I am going to miss a service appointment, I call them to reschedule. They always offer me special prices and ensure my vehicles are taken care of or advise me of any delay.

Basically I treat them right, they treat me right.

The couple of times I tried my selling dealer, they acted like they could care less about me. The most offensive part was the express oil change they offer: "Bring it in on Tuesday at 1:45 PM". "I can't bring it at that time, can I leave the car at 8 AM and pick up in the evening?" "No, oil changes are done by appointment only".
  • rainbow24rainbow24 Member Posts: 26
All I was saying was that usually your selling dealer really throws out the red carpet to the customers who buy there. I go where I bought my 03 accord and they can get me an appointment sooner than someone off the street who hasn't bought there. They don't discriminate at all, but if you bought there, you get a lot better appointments, and deals on accessories.

In other words, there is a little, tiny, tiny bit better treatment where you buy your car, no discrimination.

I never found that (I don't keep "dealer ad" licence plate brackets on my cars either). The last time I bought a new car, Dennis, my salesguy, left for the Jeep dealer two days after I took delivery. Lot of influence there, lol.

From what I've read around Town Hall, often service departments are separate profit centers from the new and used car departments at many dealers and could care less where you bought the car from. They just want your business. And a couple of my best dealer experiences have been on road trips.

This doesn't mean that a doughnut bribe wouldn't hurt either.

What prices have people paid for Honda Odyssey EX's on the North Shore of Massachusetts this year? All dealerships I have talked to so far are asking for MSRP...
  • drivesafedrivesafe Member Posts: 3
Top6..which dealership did you buy it from. I have been trying to negotiate with 2 dealers in Kansas and havent come with anything less than 28,000. Any suggestions?

27100 for 2003 Honda EX, no options. Should I hold out for better?
  • drivesafedrivesafe Member Posts: 3
sticker_shock.....You sure should hold out. I got a call from another dealer today who is ready to sell for 27500 - EX - Leather. I believe that they sure will go down further...
  • clpurnellclpurnell Member Posts: 1,083
If that is no leather definately hold out.

    sticker_shock:

I bought my EX-L (Leather) for 26360$ plus ttl (2500$ off MSRP) two weeks ago. You can easily get 2000$ off MSRP in Chicago.

Hi, I recently purchased an Odyssey EX-L, I paid full MSRP, I have been shopping around in boston area almost 6 months. no one would come down. I had a hardtime to get a good trade value also.
  • kennedyskennedys Member Posts: 3
I contacted Fletcher Jones Imports today and was told that for the Sandstone Metalic EX-L purchased for $26,360 ($2500 off MSRP) was sold for this price because it had many miles. Is this true? Hopefully Aloha is still reading this message board and can help me out here.

My husband and I have just gotten serious about finding an Odyssey and have found your message board extremely helpful as far as getting guidance for prices. Hopefully we can find a good deal as well.

Did you have any luck on the North Shore? I went to the place in Danvers and they would give me 300 of MSRP? I have a place in Western MA that will give me 700 off, I may make a trip out there as well. I have a EX ordered with (500 deposit) leather and DVP sys. Have to wait about another 2 weeks or so for it to come in.

We just got our Odyssey EX (no leather) from a dealership in the Chicago Suburbs for $1600 off MSRP. We called around to several dealerships in our area and many of them did not want to take much if anything off MSRP. We found that Jacobs Twin offered $1600 off MSRP and Continental Honda (Countryside, IL) would match that price. We had a fairly pleasant buying experience at Continental. They would NOT take the check from People's First but offered a slightly lower rate (4.83) with no fees/simple interest so we financed with them. We waited 10 days for our color (silver) to come in. Thanks to everyone for your information, it really helped us.

A friend of mine was saying we can get these cars in Canada. They just opend a plant not long ago? Said he knows a guy who got an Odyssey for like 23K? Had to pay something at the border but the saving were still over 7 grand! Not sure on the options and such but that is still pretty cheap. Does anyone know about this?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Lots of issues here, the biggest being that Honda USA won't honour the warranty.

You should try Autofair in Manchester. They have pretty good prices on their website. I haven't gone there since I am still deciding what to get but they seem to have good deals.
  • aloha1973aloha1973 Member Posts: 6
This is not true - the car had 43 miles on it. I don't think this is a lot of miles. My previous new Maxima'99 had exactly the same mileage when I bought it.

When I was at the sales manager's office I saw a board with all salesman statistics and prices for the cars they sold. There were at least 4 Odysseys EXL sold for 26860$ ( 2000$ off MSRP). I guess I just got lucky ( right place, right time ) to get my price ( 2500$ off MSRP)

This board was really helpful in my negotiations, I feel I need to return the favor, by posting my results.

Can we still leagally go over the border and purchase a car in Canada? Would love to know if we can!!

Read further and saw that piece on the potential problems of doing this. Best not to take a chance I guess!

It's legal, and may be common some year if NAFTA is any indication. The European countries are knocking down barriers to cross-border car shopping.

Pretty big hassle right now, even if you could find a dealer willing to sell you a new Odyssey.

Has anyone purchased a Honda from Ganely Honda in cleveland, OH? They are offering $2000.00 off on 03 EXL w/DVD. MSRP is $30,380, asking 28,380. They will deliver it to my door in Columbus, OH, about two hours away. Sounds good to me, maybe too good. Any experiences?

Anyone able to get a price below MSRP on an EX-L with DVD in Virginia? Thanks. RC
  • ryanc4ryanc4 Member Posts: 3
Looking for a good deal in Virginia, but I am also really close to the NC border and would be willing to travel to PA if the price was right.
  • bott1bott1 Member Posts: 5
Sounds like a great price to me!! I have 2 holds in right now. One at a local dealer and another that's 120 miles away. The closer one is giving 300 off the sticker while the one farther away is giving 600 off sticker. Same car, Black with leather and the DVD system. Is 120 miles worth 300.00? Is too me!!

any deals like the northern deals in NC or VA?
  • impact01impact01 Member Posts: 95
In the greater DC area, they wanted MSRP + $1000 (the extra gets you some dealer installed "options") four weeks ago. At this rate, a T&C limited with all the bells and whistles seems more attractive to me.

A friend of mine just bought a new 03 EXL from Orca Auto Sales http://www.orcaautosales.com in Canada. Paid $26500.00 US + Tax and License in WA state. They took care of all the paperwork to import into the US, converted the odometer and speedometer to miles, included a 3rd party warranty for US use and even delivered it to his home. The warranty covers just about everything that the standard warranty would cover in the US and Canadian dealerships will honor the Canadian warranty. Since it's a short drive to the border, it's not that big a deal.

So far in the WA area, dealers have either quoted MSRP or above. Haven't had any luck yet on getting to drop below MSRP. But I haven't tried very hard. But so far the Canadian deal looks like the way I'll go.
  • dvw4dvw4 Member Posts: 3
Was quoted, in NC, 26,900 for a 03 EXL, Sage Brush. 36mo lease 0 down for 395 per month. BUT there are some strange "fees" in the quote...Mileage Adjustment? for $600 and Assignment fee for about the same. Does anyone know those fees really are?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I don't want to throw rain on anyone's parade, but I'm curious whether a Canadian Honda dealer will do warranty work on a gray market car that's got US tags on it.

Here's a horror story to chew on for those thinking of an older van - for happier results, try the Nissan Pathfinder discussion up through mid '02 or so (lofquist "Nissan Pathfinder" Jul 18, 2002 4:33pm). Lots of people got Pathys in Toronto and saved thousands. Nissan has since clamped down though.

Please keep us posted Kgnw1 on how things work out with your friend (and you!).

I went into a So. Cal dealer that offered 1K below MSRP on a EX/L. We settled on a EX/LNavi for 750 below. I thought that when you leave all that money on the table it would lead to great after sales service.

While I was doing the walk around prior to acceptance on Saturday I noticed some dirt under the color coat right next to the passenger side door handle. I look closer and there's more problems all around there and additional issues on other panels. The salesman tells me no problem, they will take care of it and if it takes longer than a day, they will supply the rental. The service man says...oh, you need approval of a rental to the salesman. Make an appointment they say. Foolish me, I drive off with the car. I call them to let them know I am coming in and ask if arrangements been made for a rental. After 9 calls, surprise, no rental. I talk to the sales manager and he tells me they will take me home. Come in at 9 so that he can take care of me he tells me. I can live with that. I take the day off from work. Go in yesterday and after an hour waiting for my ride, no ride home. Now they tell me to bring it in again sometime next week. Whenever its best for me. I ask them to set a date, they won't, phone calls have to be made. Well, I can wait for a phone call. No, its always done with voice mail. Not even a try. So it turns out they will let me know when its best for me. The internet manager ignored my voicemessages and pages two days ago. One salesman told me that he was looking at him and after he took down my phone number, I was transfered to the parts dept. He said that he was sorry for not returning my calls when I walk into his office, leads me outside and turns into my best buddy.

The point is that I seem to get better service at the Toyota dealer where I paid 100 dollars over invoice. They have loaners if you make arrangements. When I drove in without an appointment, they drove me to a rental place and picked up the tab. I don't remember any phone call issues there.

Has anyone purchased a Odyssey EX-L with NAV below MSRP in upstate New York?
  • iloveimportsiloveimports Member Posts: 2
You're talking John Holtz in Roch. They would probably give you something off the sticker. Eastern Hills in Buff. Pretty sure they changed their name to Leah Honda...same place. Same story as Holtz...they are 1 and 2 in WNY for Honda's. If you are the type who wants a HUGE discount and are willing to risk the Canadian issue, there is a dealer in Buffalo (I don't know if I can say this) who deals 'em. Their name rhymes with "Pay Backs". Kinda shady over there. I went there to look for an Accord V6 about 2 years ago and I'll never go there again. Got the "not buying today, get outta here!" treatment. My brother bought an Odyssey over at Holtz a couple years ago, then traded up recently to get the bigger engine and the DVD. Told me it took hours to seal the deal but I think it was like $250 off and like $150 off the warranty plus more for his Odyssey on trade since it was his second one in 2 years! Both times though, he had to settle on the color. He was driving a dark grey-purple one and now he's got the light blue (think is Havasu Blue?). And he had to wait about a month for it to arrive. Haven't been to Leah yet since I went Accord shopping. They were remodeling when I went. It was too damn hot out there, no AC, no showroom during the remodeling. The saleswoman was super nice (Lee I think her name was), even considering their situation and they didn't throw me out when I told them I wasn't buying today! Maybe it was because I was already outside negotiating on a picnic table! Anyways, those would be the one's I would check out. They are big enough to give a discount. Smaller dealers couldn't afford to give a discount I would guess. Good Luck!
  • iloveimportsiloveimports Member Posts: 2
just checked Holtz website...looks like they might give you a discount if your a Sams Club or BJ's member. Don't know how much though. Guess you have to call. Lia (sorry bout the mispelling earlier, not Leah) is giving up $500 on their website for EX-L RES (the ones with the DVD). Figure they might give you the same deal. Wish my bro saw that one! "Pay Backs" site is a joke. Don't even bother visiting there. Happy Odyssey hunting!
