Holden is GMs arm in Australia and NZ. They make an awsome car the Holden Commodore. Has a 6 speed, corvette LS1 engine, dual exhaust, seats 4 and is lighter than a chevy impala (with almost the same dimensions) and close to 400hp. A very nice car, why they don't bring it here is beyond me.

You must be referring to the Proton Perdana. I've sat in one when I was in Malaysia a few years ago and it was quite nice. A good looking car, however, it needs to be updated since it has been in production for quite a while now. I can't believe that Proton is still currently selliing the Iswara! That was the original Proton!! My relatives had a couple of them back when they first came out, but they've been long gone. I suppose it's a competitively (and accessible) priced car for those folks with lower income.

    Good luck,

Actually, if we're comparing EPA apples to EPA apples, my 99 Ody sticker says 18 (as opposed to 17) city, and my neighbor's 2000 Expedition XLT with 4.6 liter sticker says 14 city. My math says that his truck uses 29% more fuel to cover the same distance as my van. If he had the 5.4, assuming that the sticker does say 12 city, then the 5.4 Expedition would use 1.50 gallons to go 18 miles, which sure looks like 50% more than the Odyssey to this engineer.

Oh yea, I almost forgot to mention, when the two families go somewhere together, we use the Odyssey... We've only all 7 (4 adults, 3 kids) been in the Expy once... getting the adults into an Odyssey with three kids car seats installed requires flexibility, but getting into the Expedition with three car seats will make you break a sweat, and that last row is a penalty box when you get there.

Also, to be fair, two of the kids are mine, so taking their truck requires moving two car seats.

I do understand the emotional appeal of the SUV's, I'd rather have a 2WD Suburban than the Odyssey, but the Pickup out in the garage is for me, and the Odyssey is what Mrs. colo preferred. Any joy I might derive from driving the big, powerful suburban would have been more than offset by her resentment if I had insisted.

I have to admit that I haven't been fully reading these expedition posts but I can help wondering why its going on and on and......

Not that I'm against it by any means, we all can say what we want, just wondering why, I mean the ford expedition?

At least were over the "group hug" stage the MPVer's are going through now.

First time poster long time reader.
Someone mentioned about 50 messages ago that the extended HCW does not cover the transmission. Anyone know for sure if that is true?
I'm getting a GG '01 EX in the next couple of days from University Honda in Bowling Green, OH.(20 miles S of Toledo) for $25,940 + $50 doc fee. Accessories are at dealer cost but I think I'm going to buy the cassette player off the web and save the installation cost. I appreciate all the helpful info from everyone. Especially the info about the Donnelly rear view mirror with the compass and Temp. gauge.

    Thanks again,
    David

The Iswara to Malaysians is perhaps like the original VW Beetle to the Mexicans. It's cheap to buy and run, spare parts are plentiful, why change a thing?

Yes, the tranny is covered by the extended warranty. My HCW is the 7/100/0 and I paid $925 on Jan 31. Hope you can negotiate a similar deal with your dealer. $25,990 drive-away (not including state title and tax fees) is a good price. Congrats.

I have an '01 Ex that has developed an intermittent noise from the compressor during the first start of the day or if it has been parked for 6 or 6 hours. The noise sounds like the clutch slips momentarily either due to clutch problems or compressor problems. The dealer has had one shot at repair and would like me to believe the noise is common on the new Odys. I insisted they revisit the problem and they now have it for the Honda rep to look at. Anyone else had this type of problem
  • masshoosiermasshoosier Member Posts: 70
Is it intermittent while the A/C is running or only on start-up? I thought I may have heard it at start up a few times last summer but wasn't sure.
  • 1steve1steve Member Posts: 2
The A/c Noise lasts 3/4 to 1 second only on startup. Then it won't do it all the time. It is loud enough to be heard in the drivers seat. It also causes the engine to rock enough that you also feel it from the drivers seat.
  • masshoosiermasshoosier Member Posts: 70
yeah, thats it......keep us posted on what the rep says, am curious.

Thanks to those that replied to my previous inquiry, asking if a delay or hesitation was normal in the one-two shift. Others have more accuratly described this as a late shift where the shift doesn't occur until higher RPM's are reached, and noted this as a characteristic observed particularly when the engine is cold.To put this in less subjective terms, it is not uncommon for my tranny to delay shifting into second until 3500 rpm's are reached, wheras at other times this shift occurs in the 2000-2500 rpm range. Is that normal?

Here's a dumb question. The literature for my new EX indicates that there's 6 speakers. I easily observe four of them (two an the front doors and two on the sides of the rear seats), but I don't see or hear the remaining two? Can someone tell me where the other two are located?

    Thanks,
    John
  • jrdowneyjrdowney Member Posts: 96
The other two are located on the dash facing up towards the windshield.

Speakers - The other speakers are up by the windsheild I beleive. You will see two grills by the pillars on the dash.

Air Con Noise - Yes it seems to engage about 1 sec after start up with a big clunck. I tried turning the air on and off and it still cluncks when it is turned on. Then I tried turning on and off a number of times in succession and it seemed to get better but it still does it. There was a point though that I thought the air had stopped working because I no longer heard the clunck on start up and I could not clear the fog off the windsheild. I think the clunck is still there. I try not to drive mine too much. I think the clunck is common. I won't say it is normal but mine does it and Honda keeps telling me everything I complain about is a normal characteristic (harmonic vibration) of the vehicle so lets leave it at common.

I have a 2001 Ody and the tachometer has a red light just below the 8. It blinks sometimes after the car is shut off but not all the time, I can not figure out what it is for and the dealer does not have a clue.

Please Help, what does this blinking red light indicate?

Just purchased my wifes white Odyssey EX from Moss Motors in Lafayette LA and drove it back to Florida. $25,800 plus $500 for the 6 disc changer. I dealt with Chris the sales mgr and Doug. They handled everything perfectly and were a pleasure to deal with. I got about 24 miles per gallon on the way back averaging 80 mph

The initial reason I got the navigation system was for personal motivation. I got the best minivan for my wife and 3 kids (that's what my wife wanted) instead of getting the Toyota Sequoia for us (that's what I wanted), so why not get me this "toy" with it. I also design for a living the integration of the equivalent system on aircraft's (GPS antenna, Flight Management System, etc.), but didn't own one. I bough my wife a GG '01 Odyssey w/ Navi. a little more than a month ago and I cannot stop driving it. We already visited many recreation areas, parks and tourist attraction we didn't know existed around our hometown, we had gone to addresses in the DC metropolitan area and Baltimore we never had an idea how to get to. We have many plans for it in the future, which scare me a little bit because I fear we will be putting way to many miles on the minivan, which means reaching 100K well before the seven years.

From now on I will like to have that feature (NAV) integrated with all the cars I'll get in the future, since we have all the space we ever going to need in the Odyssey, I'm thinking more like the Infinity Q45 w/ Navigation system as my next car (or maybe the expencive Lexus LX 470 w/ NAV).

My 2 cents; It's a very resourceful option if you don't mind the $2K.

I will make some assumptions. You have a 2001 Ody EX. The light below the number 8 is a blinking red diode that will flash indicating the theft alarm is armed. The light should only blink when the doors are locked and closed. Stand outside the van and lock the doors with the remote. Once the van locks, the light should start flashing.

The theft alarm actually works since an inept parking attendant locked the keys in ours and "broke" into it to get them out, setting off the alarm.

When I got our 2000 EX with Nav it was a used vehicle. The Navigation system was not something that I would have paid the extra money for if we were ordering the van, I thought it was just a "gadget" my husband would enjoy more than I would use. I was wrong. I use the system frequently, as we are new to the bay area, and I have to find many places in unfamiliar territory. I love being able to concentrate on the road rather than the road signs around me. It is handy that it turns down the audio to alert the driver of upcoming instructions. Heck, I sometimes use it when I know how to get somewhere just to see if it recommends the same route I take. For me it is kind of like a cordless phone, or a microwave, is it a neccessity? no, but I'd hate to be without it.

Just like Dual Zone Temperature control is always mentioned when automobile reviewers write about a luxury sedan. Odyssey has NAV and most owners love it. Why then do Odyssey owners write scornfully about the Dual Zone Temperature Control that is a very nice feature of most luxury sedans and also available on some minivans?

I was wondering how does the navigation systems you can buy that operate with your notebook computer, or portable ones by themselves, compare in price and utility with having one installed in the auto, as in the Odyssey?
  • suegodisuegodi Member Posts: 2
Hi- I am new to the site- I've spent the last few hours scrolling through about 1000 postings but couldn't find an answer..... We are probably going to buy an Ody ASAP- checked it out at the NY Auto show and was impressed. Anyway- the reps couldn't really help- if you are using a child seat tether in the third row, doesn't it interfere with the cargo area? Can you still fit in a double stroller and all the other paraphernalia needed for toting children? Thanks- I've found this forum to be extremely helpful!!
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
The tether does extend across the well making it more difficult to fit larger, bulkier objects. The tether doesn't go straight down the middle, but rather off slightly to the side. I don't know how big a double stroller is when folded, but I know I can easily fit my PEG single stroller with the tether attached. You can still fit a ton of stuff in the cargo area with the tether, it's just takes a more "creative" approach with the much larger objects.

Billg7 wondered: I was wondering how does the navigation systems you can buy that operate with your notebook computer, or portable ones by themselves.
I have a laptop nav. for my motorhome and its not bad, but I have 10 times the room as my Odyssey. The laptop sits on a special mount by the drivers seat. I have a cord hooked to the cig. plug and have tried the extra speakers as the ones for laptops just don't have the volume to hear. I have also tried the cassette adapter through the MH radio (the best way for sound). None of them compare to our Odyssey with nav. unit. The Odysseys nav. display is in the dash where you can see it clearly, and when it speaks the radio sound dims down unlike the laptop which you can't hear if you have the radio on. Lets face it are you going to go 800miles without listening to the radio/tape/cd? Also everytime you get out and go into a store, what are you going to do with the laptop? Leave it in plain site for someone to steal. Those handhelds aren't that great either. No sound and very limited. You have to download the cities where you are traveling etc. The Odyssey is on DVD and covers the whole US.

Since I had my Ody EX with Nav, I have firmly believed that Nav system in a car will become very popular. Let's recall about 10-15 years ago. At that time, even power window, power mirror are very attractive features. Now, they are basically on every cars. I think Nav will be the same. Put Nav into your system now. While you really enjoy this nice feature, your resale value is kept better than without Nav system. I am a believer of this system. But I really doubted it before I got it.

Interesting, I was also think about Infiniti Q45 with Nav as my next car.

As the after market Nav, you can get it now. I knew Radio Shack has GPS system. It costs $700. But, I think it is much worse than Honda's $2000 factory installed system. 1. It used battery. 2. You have to mount it somewhre. 3. It uses flash stick for map. So, you have to buy many stick for many places you want to go. Bascially, one stick only good for one city. Each stick costs about $70. Honda's use DVD, which cover the whole North America. 4. It has no sound to remind you. 5. You have to doubt the reliability of it. I definitily think Honda's system is worth.

Now, Honda has Nav system (Acura's is exactly same as this one). Infiniti has one. Laxus has one. Who else has?

my father has just bought a 01 odyssey EX and today we took it in for a detailing I/ exterior and interior detailing(they did a pretty scrappy job if I do say so myself. I had to go back over what they had already done)well anyway we were checking over the car and we noticed(me and my father) that the left slidinding door lined up with the car but when we checked the right side the door was about a half of inch above the car.(that could be the reason why that particular door is addling, especially when there is only two passengers in the van) To every one out there reading this you might want to check your van weather what year it is. If anyone else has this problem send me an em-ail on may a way that it can be prevented or a way that I could prevent it i would greatly abliged
    thanks

I heard a "clunk" under the drivers feet area (left front wheel area). It happens sporadically so I can't duplicate it for the dealer. (Although they did get it to do it) It mostly does it while turning right out of a driveway. It sounds like something is binding and then breaks loose which causes a clunk. The dealer checked the brakes, suspension
etc. and found all ok. They suggested that it might be a bad wheel so they switched the front wheels to see if the noise traveled to the right side. It did not. My Odyssey is only 3 months old and 2800 miles. Any suggestions???

My Odyssey is getting about 14mpg. I have about 1500 miles on it. I thought I was supposed to get at least 18mpg. Any suggestions? Did I get a lemon?
  • DTKWOKDTKWOK Member Posts: 131
I currently get about 24 mpg (70%/30% hwy/city) and have a little less than 2000 miles on it. It depends on how you accelerate, if you drive it like a regular car, that may be your problem. The Ody is a heavy vehicle, so from 0-30 mph I take it easy, after that I push down on the accelerator a little more heavily. (The "sweet zone" appears to be from 40 to 70 mph, on level ground.) Also check your tire pressure. Running the A/C also affects mileage. Do you drive around the city a lot?

I think the 2001's have the Latch system so it you buy a Latch compatable seat there is not a tether.

Now on my 2000 what I did to avoid having the strap accross the cargo area was to take the spare tire mount ("L" shaped brass(?) clip in with spare tire - see owners manual) and attach it to the spot on the floor (see cut in carpet - see owners manual) just before where the 3rd row set folds. Then take the tether anchor that Honda provides and attach it to the spare tire mount. The threads are exact. It is secure, a little off center, but it really works and it doesn't interfer with the cargo area at all. We carry Two strollers and the folding play pen on a daily basis and I don't have a problem catching on straps or anything. I can not vouch on how it would do in a crash but it certainly feels secure to me and I have really tried to force it.

    Hi,

We need help to cover a scratch today located in the center of the rear bumper where we parked our 2001 GG Odyssey. The shape/size is a reverse "L" with 0.5 inch wide/0.75 inch tall (no dents).

    Thank you!

A poster on this board gave a detailed account of how to fix a scratch or a chip. I have listed the post number and date below. I don't want to repost it because it is a bit long.

Yep, that's the one billg7--looked for it a couple of weeks ago and couldn't remember where it was. I'm gonna delete your answer because the repost formatting got even worse and also truncated the last few paragraphs.

Here's the "original" post in the archives (original in the sense that it appears to have been copied from Honda-acura.net):

We picked up our EX about 5 weeks and 700 miles ago (not much travelling lately). We're very happy with it - no perceptable pulls, grunts, groans, etc. The Cosco Triad car seat with the ISO/Latch system fits well (thanks, caviller). Fastest and most secure installation in 6 years and 3 kids. The bottom part of the 5 point harness is a bit short, causing the lap belts to cut across our daughter's thighs. I doubt this has any affect on safety and she hasn't complained (please nobody tell her about this).

I've noticed that the Odessey lists tend to generate more traffic than the Chrysler ones. And many of the postings have to do with reliability and prolem areas. IS this becuase the Honda is prone to as many or more problems as the Chrysler or is it because Honda drivers tend to use the Internet more so you see more Honda postings? No one can answer this scientifically but I'd love to hear your theories. Josh
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
I work on one of the internet car sites and I can tell you Honda is our number one brand. I doubt it has more problems than the Chrysler, and a lot of the scuttlebutt here is just about pricing and availability, not quality.

I recently purchased a Draw-Tite class III hitch for my Odyssey. I'm not really pleased with the height of the hitch from the ground (8.5 " from bottom of hitch to ground). I saw the hidden hitch picture on the hidden hitch web site, it appears to be higher than the draw-tite. Does anyone know this to be true?

It's hard to measure the distance from the bottom of the bumper to the top of the 2" receiver (because it is recessed several inches behind the bumper), but it is approximately 2" below the bumper. I would send a picture but I don't have a digital camera. Are there any pictures of it on the Hidden Hitch installed on the Odyssey on this website?

Any help I could get would be appreciated!

I think the high number of Odyssey posts are due to the fact buyers have to wait for the vehicle. If we could drive it off the lot same day we decide to purchase I don't think there would be as big of a difference. People are living their purchase decision on line for months before receiving the van and by that time it is part of our daily routine to check the Oddyssey boards.

    Hello,
Bought a SS LX on friday. Super experience at Capitol City Honda in Olympia,Wa. I will post more about that in "Prices Paid". Any how the best deal I could get from them on the warranty was $1025. I thought a while back I had seen several posts around $875-900. Can anyone direct me to a better deal? Any problems buying it from a different dealer, or from a different state? How long do I have to purchase this? Thanks for the help!

This link has a list of dealers offering the warranty for $895, but I'm not sure if it's current.

I have a Genie 9-switch 390 MHZ garage door opener. A couple of months ago, I posted a message here requesting help programming my Homelink. The manual tells you to press the buttons of the Homelink and your transmitter at the same time, but it never worked for me. Recently, I discovered the reason. My problem was I was not using my original transmitter. I was using various after-market transmitters (Clicker, Carper, Skylink). When I finally found my old clunky original Genie transmitter, I gave it a try and it worked instantly.

Don't remember any posts about the Odyssey doors opening while the vehicle was in motion, if that is what you mean by "doors opening in transit". The GM mini-vans had this potential problem and a bunch of them were recalled. I believe that happened last week. If the Odyssey had that potential problem it would need to be in a recall campaign also. Also haven't seen any posts,in the about one year I have been reading this board, about someone being seriously hurt by the power Odyssey doors.

The number one reason I bought the Odyssey is because of its safety. I have not seen a car,or pickup truck, with higher safety numbers, to date. I now live in a city that has a lot of unsafe drivers and particularly drivers who like to tailgate me.

The power doors have been improved from the 99 models and the sound system has also. You can always have a super hi-fi sound system put in, for an extra cost. Most people are happy with the seats also.
