Matt, I have a 99 Ody and the paint is like new except for rock chips. I use Nufinish and keep it garaged. I would be interested to know if your Ody is garaged and what you do to prevent oxidation etc.
this van was purchased pre-owned and it had this problem before hand. I just wanted to know if this was commom among other Odyssey owners. I keep it in a garage now. I don't know if the person prior to me kept it inside or outside. I heard that certain elements can attribute to the oxidation. I live in Florida and was told that the salt can cause oxidation if not rinsed or washed off. It's good news to hear that your paint has not faded or oxidized and is a year older than mine. Thanks for the feed back.
I have a new 04 Odyssey (10,000 miles) and am wondering if someone could list some of the symptoms of warped rotors. I'd like to know what to listen for. Also, when/if replacing them, can another independent-brand be used instead. I thought I read somewhere that higher quality rotors are available........
You feel the steering wheel shudder when you step on the brakes. Sometimes you have a steering wheels vibration/shudder at different speeds without touching the brakes; feels like a tire is out of balance.
Rotors can be warped by over tightening the lugs nuts. The tire techs or service techs get in a hurry and over tighten the lugs with air guns/wrenches. This happens a lot.
You can use aftermarket non OEM (original equipment mfg) rotors. I am not sure what brand would be better than what Honda uses.
I used to buy ATE and Brembo rotors when I was racing production based FWD cars.
One more suggestion. You say "faded or oxidized paint on the hood". If it is only on the hood, my bet is that the hood was repainted for some reason before you got the car. Look at the roof, if it is not faded I suspect that the hood was repainted.
That is not uncommon with repaint jobs, as they are not always applied and dried under proper conditions, and often with incorrect or cheap paint.
Go to www.streetkeys.com there you'll find the remote cheaper than the dealer's and you can easily program it yourself and you can also buy the keys.Good luck.
Long story short. Transmission is shot at 105K and asked American Honda if they would help. Was told that we have never had our Odyssey serviced at a dealer. My wife took it in Aug 03 at 85k because it was driving funny with the check engine light on. (Have hard copies of 8 warranty repairs done by honda that AH doesn't show)
The dealer replaced the egr valve (recall/warranty) and told her she was good to go. Just found out that our dealer didn't get the service bulletin on the transmission till sep 03. I am deploying to the gulf at the end of the week and would like to know that my family would be safe in our odyssey.
American honda says that because we are now over a 100k they won't do anything. AHonda said that after calling local dealer that records only showed that we brought it in for the check engine light and that it was fixed by replacing the egr value, and we have no proof that there was a transmission problem. So, my wife continued to drive the van as is after being told that the van was good to go. The dealer never checked the transmission. After disscusions with AH for a long time I was told that "We won't do anything for you. Thanks for calling, have a nice day. CLICK "
Have you got records of maintenance done, in particular transmission fluid changes etc.? If you did the maintenance yourself have you got receipts for oil, filters, transmission fluid?
Have proof of all service records from honda and proof of Honda fluids when service done at non-honda dealers. A-honda said too bad. Said my wife should have taken it to another dealer when our dealer changed the egr to get a second opinion.
I just got this in the mail today: "Honda Motor Co has decided that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2002-04 Odysseys and 2003-04 Pilots." (Certain Hondas but they don't know which ones). "Certain operating conditions can result in heat buildup in the transmission second gear and may lead to gear tooth chipping. In very rare cases, gear breakage can occur. Gear failure could result in transmission lockup, and a crash could occur without warning."
Anybody out there have this problem?
I've bought two Odyesseys: the first one was traded at 90,000 miles. The only problem I ever had was a check engine light. The second one now has 36,000 miles with no problems other than a leaky windshield.
And not much to worry about. Our shop has, to this point, inspected hundreds of these and we've found one that was questionable. Honda looked at the photos and OK'd a new transmission.
that Odyssey had very high miles and a huge trailer hitch. It had been WELL used.
They have to use words like **can occur** and **could occur** in recall notices.
I have an '04 Odyssey with the stock tires. They are Protenzas I believe. I've read elsewhere that the Ody tires should be at 36 psi, however the tires say not to inflate them past 44 psi. This is an 8 psi difference which seems like quite a bit.
The owners manual says 36 psi, and that is what you should be using. For a slight improvement in handling, fuel economy, or if carrying an extra load, maybe go 2 psi over that, but probably no further. The max pressure is just that - the absolute max before carcass damage can occur.
Have my 2002 Odyssey with 48K miles on it. Brought it in for the recall, no problem (well only having having to bring it down there and try to get to work). I was dissapointed in the dealer since I had brought the car in for the 45K mile check, and then when I got home the recall notice was in the mail. Anyway, dealer says (for what it is worth), they are seeing a problem in about 1 out of 100 of the Odyssey's that are coming in.
I have 38K miles on my 2001 Ody EX, and the stock Michelin Symmetry's are getting close to needing to be replaced. (seems kind of low, my Michelin LTX's on my Explorer show very little wear after 30K miles) I'd be happy to hear about anybody's experience with replacement tires for the Ody. I'm also thinking about moving up one tire size to get a little more rubber on the ground. Anybody move up to a larger tire?
I guess that I should buy a lottery ticket this week, as I hit the "1 in 100" jackpot yesterday. Cooked second gear at 35.4k miles. I could hear it coming over the past few months - a whine under load that has become increasingly evident.
It took two sets of digital images to get it cleared from Honda, but the new (I assume rebuilt...) unit has been ordered. Given the delivery time and dealer workload, they expect it to take a solid week. Fortunately, Honda and our dealer (Friendly Honda, Poughkeepsie, NY) is handling the situation with customer satifaction as job 1, and put us in an Enterprise rental Chrysler T&C van (fully paid, including supplemental insurance).
Nobody wants to have to contend with problems, but it is good to see a manufacturer and the dealers stepping up to the issue and handling it professionally.
PS: If you want to read my comments about Chrysler Stow-&-Go seats, see "Ody: Future Models" post 2048).
kimo9: fibber is correct, you should only inflate your tires to the amount specified in the owners manual. The max on the sidewall is the most the tire can be inflated to, but I wouldn't run it that high since the manual calls for 36.
Replacement tires: I put 2 sets of Goodyear Aquatreads on my 2000 Ody and they were pretty good tires. They didn't last more than about 40K miles, although they have a treadlife warranty of about 70K I think. In any case they were way better than the crappy Firestones that came on my 2000 LX, fairly quiet and handled well. I put the second set on right before I sold the 2000 for an 04 EX-L. They are very resonably priced at Tirerack.com, where I have now bought 5 sets of tires, always awesome service.
Replaced Symmetrys with Michelin Harmonys last year. Symmetry tires had about 38K on them, and wet weather traction had degraded significantly. New Harmonys have better dry traction, significantly better wet traction, and in my opinion have better handling than the Symmetrys (even when they were brand new). New tires are also quieter, especially on concrete roads. Compare the Harmonys vs. Symmetry on www.tirerack.com
We have a 2001 Odyssey EX with 35K miles. Its been great for us. 1K miles and 7 days left on the warranty.
I do notice a "Kink" sound when going forward after backing up. Honda tell me it's the brake calipers making that sound. Has anyone else experience this.
If you live in Maine, did you know that Maine has a state mandated "Implied Warranty" on all things purchased new?.....including vehicles. From what I've read, this warranty is like an extended warranty in that it's in effect for a period of 4 years. It supercedes the manufacturer's warranty of 3/36.

Here's a link (Maine AG's Office). The UCC addresses implied warranties across the US (except LA), but it's not as uniform as the name would suggest, since states don't necessarily adopt the whole code unchanged and some (most?) states allow the manufacturer to disclaim implied warranties when the feds let them (link).
Note in the example in the Maine AG link, if you put 90,000 miles on your Ody tranny in two or three years, Honda is probably off the hook if it fails.
If it is the brake callipers, simply lubricating them will illiminate the noise. Have them lubricated, if the noise is still there go back to the dealership to see how much the persons nose has grown that told you it was the brakes. My brakes were making a clicking noise until they were lubricated. Take it in quickly before your warranty is over. Also, have you considered purchasing an extended warranty from Honda, I hear that you can purchase a 100,000 mile warranty for approximately $850.00. It might be in your best interest. Just my two cents
The pads can also move around on first application after changing directions causing a click sound. If this is happening you will need to apply some disc brake quiet inbettween the shim and the pad and on the back side of the shims. This will slow down the normal shift movement and stop the noise.
Thanks for the tip. Anyone else having the problem prominent on cold days vs. hot days? Took my 04 Ody in yesterday and of course the dealer couldn't duplicate the noise. I knew that would probably happen as everything swells upon heating up. We're in FL so it's hot. When the van was new this past winter the rattling from both doors was terrible. The noise is also noticable in the morning when it's still relatively cool~75F. When it warms up to 90 or 95F the problem hides. It was so annoying at 30mph over semi rough streets. Will try this tip but am also going to take all these posts about rattling doors to my dealer. I found 29 posts about this and my dealing said his techs check a similar forum and found nothing? They're not checking Edmunds!
I had sliding door stress rattle which was more prominent when I started and stopped. I stopped the rattle/squeak by spraying the spongy rubber around the door contacts with silicone but shin etsu grease may be better. Dont know if this is an accepted procedure but the noise was driving me nuts and it has not come back in 4 months rockycow33
We experienced the same problem on our 1999 Odyssey. In our case, the driver's side sliding door popped open while my wife was driving and my daughter was seated next to it (belted in of course).
I looked at the door myself and determined it was the latching motor/mechanism which needed to be replaced. This mechanism draws the trailing edge of the door into the door opening so that the door is flush (and latched) with the body.
Honda wanted to charge us $700+ to fix door (at about 55,000 miles). I stressed that I felt this was a safety issue which should prompt a recall by the NHTSA. The long and short of it is that Honda paid for the entire repair.
The doors on our Odyssey have accounted for virtually all of the problems the van has experienced (hopefully). We've probably had the van in 7 or 8 times for door issues BEFORE this past incident. Other issues have included the several recalls, Firestone tire balance problems, and a radio problems. So far (knock on wood) we've not had the transmission problem.
The van has 80,000 miles on it now. We tow a pop-up camper a few hundred miles every summer (tranny cooler installed) and everything seems to be holding together well and working (now). Occassionally we'll encounter a problem with the door open alarm going off on the sliders, but it is easily corrected by wiping the electrical connectors off with a piece of cloth to clean them.

It's "nice" to see that Honda is consistent in their problems. I had the EGR problem on my 99 Ody, although it would always trigger the CEL and set codes.
I now have a 03 Ody and it's been hesitating and stumbling along for some time. No CEL or Fault Codes, though. Brought it in to my friendly local Honda shyster service this morning for the tranny recall and mentioned the stumbling and the TSB.
Service writer looked it up and told me that, since I have 56k on the car, it would not be covered under warranty and they woould charge $90 and change just to diagnose the problem. Repair would be extra.
I told him "No Thanks" and just ordered the part from from an on line source for considerably less than a hundred bucks.
I have received same message in 6 disc CD changer. Will not reset and fear I will have to take back to auto repair service again....last repair was $270 but now over 1 year warranty...anyone have a process that works with Honda central or Honda-Accessories.com, our sponsor in this forum?
Hi, I have a 2000 Odyssey, and the previous owner had resurfaced the rotors at about 40000 miles, at around 48000, I started noticing a vibration in the steering wheel when I braked, so the dealers did say the rotors needed to be resurfaced again, and it was done for free. At 60000 the vibration came back when braking, this time I had to pay, pads were also changed. About a 1000 miles after I am sensing the braking vibration coming back. The dealer says I brake too hard, and I know that is not the case, previously I put about 80000 miles on my 98 Astro van and braked as smooth as ever without ever having to resurface. Anyone having the same problem?
I haven't had any problems with the power doors recently, but for the 4 years we've had our Odyssey we've had to be extra careful when we have the front doors open on an incline, because they tend to slam shut.
Today I was standing outside of the van leaning over the passenger seat when I forgot (again) to be careful, and the door slammed into me, shoving my shins into the door opening. I'm going to have some really nasty bruises for sure. So I'm finally going to call today to see if they can do anything about the hinges.
CONSUMERS REPORTS SEPT 2004 STATES THAT 2002-2004 HONDA ODYSSEY RECALLED FOR HEAT BUILD-UP IN TRANSMISSION VEHICLES UNDER 15K WILL MODIFY OIL TRANSMISSON COOLER LINE OVER 15K IF DAMAGED TRANS THEY WILL REPLACE TRANS CURRENTLY I AM GETTING UNDER 15MPG IN TOWN AND 23 TO 25 HIGHWAY AND MY DOORS DO RATTLE VERY UNSATISFIED WITH VEHICLE
We just took delivery of a new '04 Odessey (EXL) last weekend. Already noticed a couple of issues.. The wheels seem to need balancing and the dealership suspects that there may be issues with the brake rotors (the van has been in the lot for about 4 months) and are taking care of those.
I also noticed that when I press the brake there's a squishy noise. The dealership tells me that's normal in a new van! Has anyone else experienced that? This being our first van, I don't know any better..
my tranny was cooked. They sent off photos of second gear to Honda ('02 w/35k miles), and got permission to replace the unit. It took about a week to actually get it done.
We were on our way out of town for vacation (prepaid resort stay), but Honda and our dealer (Friendly in Poughkeepsie, NY) extended the Enterprise loaner to cover the entire 10 days. Needless to say, we were extremely pleased.
Side note - even my wife, who has never really warmed up to the Honda, was very pleased to get back into it after 1100 miles in an '05 Chry T&C.
The new unit is quiet and shifts well. A bit smelly for the first week (some spilled ATF), but it seems to be diminishing.
Very pleased to get back into Ody after '05 T&C? Of course. Rental or loaners are almost always stripped, bottom of the line units. My son's 2002 GC Sport is quieter and rides better than his bother's 2001 Ody EX.

Hi Steve or anyone:
Does anyone have the delivery checklist. I am picking up an Odyssey today.
Thanks in advance,
