I changed over to Mobil 1 synthetic after my WRX crossed 10,000 miles. I did that deliberately and I am happy that I waited that long. I did the same with my 2000 Acura 3.2TL too....switched to synthetic after 10K miles.

I will probably stretch it to 5000-6000 miles. The idea being that the chemical make-up of the Synthetic should easily hold, while the filter might.

What is the deal with that? It is probably the only thing holding me back from purchasing a wrx at this time. I understand it is very affordable but for a guy right out of school looking for a car, financing is very important to me. I was also wondering if there is anyone in this room that could share with me their financing rates. IM just curious as to what subaru dealers are offering for the WRX's.

I think I saw 0% on all Imprezas on TV here in New England.

I saw those TV adds too but in small print it excludes the WRX

The Evo was shown at the LA Auto Show. Pretty impressive HP and Torque for < 29K. Lets see what the WRX Sti comes with and at what price

I received a reply from a Subaru dealer here in Florida who I'd asked about the 0.9% financing. They said the 0.9% was ONLY good when paying MSRP for the car! I've got an e-mail into Subaru to confirm it. That strikes me as pretty lame.

Supposedly it was okay on the WRX...but so what, if you're paying list?
  • axp696axp696 Member Posts: 90
I'd suggest looking through the papers for dealer-specific deals in your area. There are a number of dealers here (outside Boston) that are offering 0% financing on all their models except WRX,as well as anywhere from $1500 to $3000 off, putting them right around invoice price or a little over. The 0% is only for 24 months, though, if you're expecting 60 month financing at 0% it's going to cost closer to MSRP.

Does anyone know what performance parts can be added to a subaru wrx without voiding the warranty?
  • lippoldslippolds Member Posts: 39
The 0.0% ploy is common. With GM, it is either the 0.0 OR the big cash back incentives. Quite often the $$ you save on finance charges at 0% is less then the rebates you give up

In any case, my advice for the young person who "needs a good rate to finance" is to buy what you can afford today in CASH. This is usually a used car at first. Then put in the bank what you would pay each month if you took out a loan. In 4-5 years you have enough to buy a new car in cash (saving many thousands in interest AND earning interest on your savings)

Once you get here it is easy to keep it going. Keep putting that "monthly payment" in the bank and you can buy a new car in cash each time
  • jwilson1jwilson1 Member Posts: 956
Bravo! But, while I've made the same post on one topic or another several times, I've never seen it taken seriously. I sure hope you have better luck -- you're saving people up to 50% on their cars.

It's odd. People will hunt all over creation to save a couple hundred bucks on the sale price, then pay thousands in interest. all they had to do in the first place is buy a used Impreza for $5k or $10k, put the payments they'd be making in a decent account for 3 or 4 years, trade up one more time to a newer version of another money-saver, pay themselves for another 3 or 4 years, then start buying new or almost new cars they can pay cash for.

It really works. Thanks for saying it.

The 0.9% is good on 24-month financing. If you want 36 months, you bump up to 1.9; 48 months is 2.9, and 60 months (most common, IMHO) is 3.9. Better than I've seen from lenders, but still not 0.9.

Last fall my sister bought a Liberty because DC extended their low-low financing out to 60 months.

I agree on the "pay cash if you can" tactic. I paid off my current Neon in July 2001 (my employer was generous with their second-quarter bonus that year) and started putting that payment away in a low-interest money market. I could've had a higher interest rate in a less-liquid savings fund, but in July 2001 I was predicting buying a Rex in early 2002, so didn't want to incur a "substantial penalty for early withdrawal."

Anyway, I'm not quite at the point where I can pay all-cash for a WRX (need to keep some in an emergency fund) but this financing offer means I can keep almost half the cash I have saved currently and still have a sub-$300 monthly payment.

Everybody has to take a look at their own situation and do what's best for them.

While I'm no financial wiseguy when it comes to cash flow.....I have done far better by not paying cash. With 2.9 financing, I'd rather put 25% down and finance the rest. I'd rather take the money and possibly have a potential growth of more than 2.9% when the same money is allowed to grow in my 401K/RRSP retirement plans or other investment vehicles.

Essentially, your warranty is "voided" if the dealership believes your modification caused whatever broke to break. It's often a judgement call, and you can sometimes go above the dealership (to a regional rep, for example), to fight for warranty coverage. For example, if you add modifications that boost your horsepower tremendously and then your clutch or transmission explode, the dealership will argue that the added power caused the damage. But if you change the brakes and the clutch goes, you should be in the clear. Check the "warranty" section on www.nasioc.com for a bunch of real-world situations and outcomes.
  • schizaschiza Member Posts: 31
I'm experiencing a gas fume smell in my WRX when I start the car. It only happens occasionally when it is cold out. The smell goes away after some time. I had the dealership take a look at it and they told me they couldn't find any leaks. They said the smell is normal particularly when temp get below freezing. Has anyone else experienced this?
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Actually, your dealer can not simply deny warranty coverage just based on modifications alone. The Magnuson Moss warranty act basically states that the dealer must prove that the modifications led to a specific problem in order to deny warranty.

The STI is impressive. Again, it's a shame they insisted on putting a ridiculous spoiler and such a large scoop on the hood. The gold rims are also over the top. I wonder if you can swap the hood for a regular WRX hood and get rid of the spoiler. People would fall over laughling if I drove that thing to the office. I wonder what the MSRP is.
  • simon_txsimon_tx Member Posts: 42
I went to the link that was posted to check out the WRC STi.

Pretty cool - but that huge wing does look a little over the top for an everyday car.

I saw on the UK website they offer a normal looking spoiler version and the professional version with the big wing.

I'm curious about another possibility - can there be such a thing as a WRX STi wagon?

I'm surprused by the 300 HP - I think most people were guessing 260-280 HP.
  • sensei1sensei1 Member Posts: 196
    drooling, hyperventilating already....MSRP? dates?

Looks pretty impressive alright. Insurance companies will have a blast with this one.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Surely, you jest. It's about as much an "everyday car" as a Shelby Cobra.

  • WarpDriveWarpDrive Member Posts: 506
Corkfish, quit yer whinin about the spoiler. It's a STi and that's the way it is supposed to look.

THIS IS BIG. THIS IS HUGE!!!!!! I'm just giddy over the news.

Who would have thought that the USA would get the HIGHEST PERFORMING Impreza ever? The guys in Japan would be jealous.

What's even more impressive is the DCCD diffy. That is even more impressive than the 300HP turbo. For those that don't know, the DCCD was offered only on Type R, RA, 22B models. With this, the STi handles nothing like a WRX.
  • jwilson1jwilson1 Member Posts: 956
Motor Trend is guessing (?) approx. $30000.

If I could get a wagon version for about $30,000, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
from one who has never owned a turbo'd car before.
Friday, this sound began to make itself heard. Its a "Woo" and "Wow" sort of sounds [at least in three pitches/tones] in sync, almost like the sound a jet engine makes. Its not audible at a standstill when revving the engine; only when on the move @ 30mph and over. Also, pitch does increase slightly and a tat louder at higher speed.
    What am I listening to?

Forgive me for I don't know much what I'm talking about but after my ~11,000 mile service my steering seems a bit loose. There seems to be more "play" than I remember and my WRX handles more like an Accord than the WRX I usually drove. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I've checked the tire pressure, the power steering fluid levels, belts seem to be okay (though I don't really know what I should be looking for). Something simply feels wrong. Any suggestions?

If my car were not only a year and 28 days old and if I weren't getting married this year, oh how I would lust over the STI. Alas, like an M3, it is but a dream.

Does anyone know when its actually going to be in the dealerships and ready for sale?
  • wrxsoon1wrxsoon1 Member Posts: 158
I think you'll find it difficult to just go into a dealership and pick one out. I've been reading there are waiting lists like you wouldn't believe in some places for this. I'd start calling dealerships and getting on the lists if you really want one.

BTW...I think they're set to hit dealerships in late June early July.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
A few dealerships are hyping them up. But at least the 2 near me don't even know what the STi even is, let alone have a waiting list for it.

  • bruticusbruticus Member Posts: 229
My Forbes.com newsfeed included an article on the 2003 NAIAS, along with photo galleries of certain vehicles. Their photo of the STi was included in the GM section (similarly, Mitsu cars were under the DaimlerChrysler area, while the VW section had cars from Audi and Lamborghini but NOT VW!)

    mike,

That's a shame. I'm going to file that along with the salesperson who popped open the hood on a WRX, pointed at the alternator and told me that I was looking at the turbocharger.

the local Subie dealer here, who advertised when the 6-cylinder Outbacks first arrived: Subaru V6!

They had big signs plastered all over the windshields, so you could read them as you drove by.

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
That's a good one too. We should create a top-10 list!

    Ken
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Its not that they don't really know what it is, but in the NYC/suburban market here in Staten Island, subarus are NOT at all the desired cars, even if they are STis. Now talk about Lexus, Caddy, Infinity, MB, BMW, then you are talking about the desired cars here, or Vettes, Stangs, F-bodies or Porsche or Mitsubishi Eclispe Convertables.

I'm looking for opinions on the WRX - mostly the wagon, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

I currently drive a 2000 Maxima GLE. Nice car, loaded with stuff, powerul, sporty all that jazz. When I bought it was the "most fun to drive" sedan IMO. It still is, but some nagging quality issues have squashed my enthusiasm for driving it.

Plus - a sedan just does not have the utility of a wagon.

I've been casually following WRX boards for about 3 months.

I want to know WRX owners opinions: Specifically

    1. is the ride comfortable or will it beat me up driving on just normal roads around Dallas?

    2. Considering the size of my Maxima - although I will lose rear leg room for passengers will I gain a lot in cargo area or should I look to the larger subies?

Speaking of room - just how much is there for pasengers - I going to get to a dealer soon, but for now opinions will be fine.

    3. Does the WRX lose a lot of its initial thrill as the work commuting miles start to add up, or is it pretty fun to drive no matter what.

    4. I'm kind of a freak about noise - I don't mind hearing the car operate (engine noise), but I hate wind noise - how does the WRX do for that?

    5. I know Subaru has a good reputation for dependabilty, but I get frustrated easily by nagging little problems like swithces, latches, poor assembly etc - does Subaru have good QC on there build?

I'm basically looking for something fun to drive and that has some good utility. Is the WRX for me?
  • hunter001hunter001 Member Posts: 851
If cargo space is a big concern, I think you would be better off by looking at the larger Subie wagons like the VDC Outback or LL Bean Outback.

I like the way Subaru took the thunder out of the upcoming Lancer Evolution by introducing this Super-STi. The earlier STi would never have touched the "real" Lancer. But this STi exceeds the Lancer in every parameter. It is almost a "22B".
HP/Torque/Front-rear-center Differentials...everything is better than the EVO !!! I am impressed.

    Way to go, Subaru !

I have the vdc wagon and the WRX wagon. The Outback is quieter, smoother, better ride, and more room for people and cargo. Much better for long travel.

That said. The WRX is way more fun which has not diminished over time. For around town, it has plenty of cargo room, will seat four adults comfortably, is quiet enough, and has great seats and driving position for extended driving.

I also am in the Dallas area. If I am going to Colorado, I take the Outback; if I am going out shopping, its the WRX. Even my wife doesn't complain which speaks volumes.

    My advice. Get'em both.

    1. The ride is fairly comfortable--this from a 40-something driver--although it probably isn't as luxurious as a Lexus or Caddy, etc.

    2. Depends how much cargo room you want; the WRX wagon has some room, but if you want more you would want to look at the other Subies, as hunter and mikenk said above.

    3. I'm still thrilled with my WRX after 12,000 miles.

    4. Wind noise is fairly quiet. Again, not luxury level if that's what you're looking for.

    5. Pretty good QC, I think...

BTW as far as wind noise...I test-drove the new Nissan 350Z a few weeks ago, the Track (high-end) model. It is a nice car, the sales guy who rode along with me didn't even mind that I pushed up the rpms...and with the windows closed, it was somewhat quieter than the WRX. Too bad it's rear-wheel drive...and there's NO hint of a rear seat at all. Small trunk.

I wonder if any of you know the measurments of the wagon. I have a telescope that is kind of bulky and would like to know if it will fit and I don't want the dealers to see me come over and measure it... I have already looked twice and I don't want them to know that I have made up my mind?

    Thanks
  • hunter001hunter001 Member Posts: 851
Officially, I believe there is about 62cubic ft of luggage space in the WRX wagon, with the rear seats folded flat. But unlike the Forester, the rear glass is angled a bit sharply (for better looks) and hence all that space may not be as usable as other vehicles.

For my purposes, the WRX wagon is perfect. Whenever I feel like taking a luxury ride, I have my 2000 Acura 3.2TL (with Navigation).

    Hey Gang

Whilst perusing yesterday's Chicago Tribune, I noticed Gartner Subaru in Naperville, IL is advertising all WRXs for $500 below invoice! The ad also indicated they are taking pre0orders for the STi.
