those two designs are horrible---whats with the BIG front grills---they look ridiculous--and the interior of the intrepid looks uncomfortable --of the two, I like the Concorde (New Yorker) better but that scoop looks out of place on that designated "luxury sedan"--hope they at least put that scoop on the 300M special--what a step down from the present models---the 300M special is looking like the best bet as my next possible upgrade--or I may just keep what I got till the wheels fall off---are these German designers on drugs?---any other comments?

really doesnt look that bad---looks like the only part that needs repainting will be the bumper cover---maybe a few other parts, like trunk latch , reinforcements, exhaust, etc--but $4000 does not indicate major damage---once its out of your sight and in the shop, you will feel better--just insist on OEM parts and tell them you will only accept perfection---and argue for $2-$4 grand extra for decreased value--as no major panels are affected, you may have to settle for the smaller amount--and rent yourself (at insurance company's expense) a nice vehicle of equal value to help make the time away from the M more bearable--I've had plenty of accidents over my many years of driving and except for one bad experience, the body work was always completed to my satisfaction.

if u wanna do a competetion setup, you gotta do phoenix gold wiring. this was BY FAR the hardest part, especially in this car. its hard to get all that stuff out. but my opinion, run that phoenix gold wiring to speakers. u can just tap to head unit though, then hit the amp to there. it will help u in the long run. at louder volumes this helps a lot, and your gonna have a badass setup so go for it....

my GOD man! man i'me gonna email'em, over and over again. that will be so awesome if they come out with performance mods.

We just picked up our new M last week, and I finally went for a ride yesterday. I noticed that the speaker on top the dash sounds like it's cracked or something like that. It makes a kind of vibrating sound. Has anyone had this problem? I hate to have to take it in to the shop already, but it's annoying - and disappointing. Don't know if it matters, but we have the Infinity system. Thinking it might be the CD I made, I tried another and same problem.

thats the center channel, that gain is set so high on the stock system, it hurts your head when you put it up because it was much louder than the other speakers. i disconnected mine and threw it out...u might wanna do the same.

Welcome to this group---you made the right choice--my M has over 20k on the dial and I am very satisfied with it

Does the speaker make noise at even just moderate volume or just at high volume---do you have the bass all the way up--very bassy songs at high volume will tend to cause vibration in the speakers, especially rear ones--if you dont hear it at mid bass level, its probably normal---listen to another M at the dealer at the same settings to be sure---dont be afraid to bring it in for repair if its defective

Why is the tranny damaged? You got hit in the back, the tranny is in the front?? What's wrong with it? Also what speed were you hit at? Really that looks minor. The 300M's rear end is very brittle(alot of other cars are too) Parts for new cars are just expensive. I got hit on the side, under the gas cap, & I had a little dent, & that was $1500 to fix.

Hey everybody ... my 2001 went into the shop on Friday due to a BIG problem. I was driving up to Dayton, Ohio on my way to drop of my car to have the air suspenion cylinders replaced and all that and as I was driving, I thought I heard a constant loud noise. I had the AC on full blast, plus the stereo on and the hum of the compressors so I wasn't sure what it was until I looked at my RPM's and they were at 5500 and I was going 50 mph !!!!! I pulled over and called the dealer and talked to the service manager. He said that the reason this has happened is because the car recognized a transmission problem so it puts the car into second gear and doesn't shift out of it. I tried even putting the car in autostick mode which didn't do anything either. He went on to explain that the reason it puts it into second gear is so that you can still drive it to a dealer safely to have it serviced. Then to my amazement he told me to try and turn off the car and turn it back on. I was like "did Bill Gates make this car ?!?!?!" "Rebooting" my car didn't work either. So it is now currently at the dealer and they are supposed to call me today and let me know what the problem is. Anyone else had this problem?

tuscongil; I too have the std. stereo and ordered a basslink Friday to make up for the lack of clean bass in the system. The rear 6x9's bottom out horribly during songs w/ just moderate bass in them. The basslink should be a perfect addition to balance out the cheap std. system in the M.

mike360; I had the center speaker replaced because of the same rattle. The speaker is either blown or a piece of debris is in there rattling. More than likley it is shot as there is usually a thin piece of cloth mesh over those small, cheap full range speakers elimianting the possibilty of debris rattling around on the cone of the speaker. What AV sugested, disconecting it, is probably best as after having it replaced it will more than likley happen again.

Great site. If he comes out with a Tranny upgrade, I may forgo the "N" (if the photos for the sedan are correct) If they can get a M in the 14second range (1/4 mi.) and high 5's to very low 6's I would be one happy camper, ir, driver:)

easyrider300m: The speaker makes the noise even at moderate volume, and the bass was almost all the way up. I'll try the bass at mid level tonight and see what happens.

avalanche165 & thill381: If I decide to disconnect it, where would I do that?

If lowering the bass doesn't help, I'll have the dealer replace it. If the problem persists, I'll disconnect it. Thanks for the help.

i told u that picture doesnt give it justice lol. for starters the trunk is smashed as well, the exhaust system is tore up, it bounces around.. the door rattles now, and my transmission is screwed. i dont know how.. they told me that it was because i was sitting still when they hit me and the energy of the hit went all the way thru my car. i dont know.. but now when it changes gears theres a grinding noise under the hood..

well, if all goes well, i can have it in the shop today. but, thats if all goes well, and something tells me this insurance co. is draggin....
  • fuzzywuzzyfuzzywuzzy Member Posts: 958
Shouldn't be anything major. It's most likly the input/output speed sensor. It seem to die for some reason. It happend to me, & a few other people. Although I think it's the first time on a 2001 model.

How hard did this nice person hit you? How fast was he going?
  • phases78phases78 Member Posts: 471
oh yeah, and the brakes are grinding now too, dont ask how, i dont know..... :(

You beat me to the punch, I was going to get all the M lover's to touch there M's with their hands over their hearts and give us a Roseanne edition of O Canada, but now I won't.

How about telling us all about the changes or mods on the 2002 M's, I'm sure some of us will like to know. It's great to have this extra day off for a holiday, to go for a drive in out M's or watch good movies or sports on the tube, plus we get a chance to do it all over again on the 4th. Happy Birthday America!!!!!!!!!

fuzzy : when did that happen??

mj: word gets to me, they'll have a tire pressure monitor, an extra luxury package, with 18" rims, and (?) intake temp sensor?
  • thill381thill381 Member Posts: 64
Take the black plastic trim panel (the piece that the speaker in question is underneath) off the dash by carefully prying up along the portion that meats the padded dash. Once this is off you will see the two screws that hold the speaker in, take these out and disconnect the molex connector that is attached to the speaker. Your done. You will want to wrap the end of the connector in electrical tape to prevent it from making contact w/ any metal.

It might be nice to get it from the horses mouth, and he works at the plant and should know unless he is sworn to secrecy and might lose his head if he lets the the troops know!!!!

I am curious to know how many people have installed Borla systems on their M's. I am particularly interested in the performance gain and overall satisfaction.
  • tucsongiltucsongil Member Posts: 116
Hill, please post up the results of your Basslink add on. Since you and I have the std stereo LMK how it was wired up.

BTW, with the addition of the Basslink would that make the 6x9 in the rear midrages? I say this since most/all of the bass will be coming from the subwoofer.

Also, did you leave in the center channel speaker once it was disconected? Or it was removel all together leaving nothing in it's place?

So you want the inside scoop on the 2002's EH!! . Well the biggest one is the 300 Tuner Package it will be a 2002.5 model, it has dual exhaust , lower ride height, lower body side mouldings ,18 inch rims, 245-45-18 rubber and have heard more H.P( but I cant confirm this ). Regular 300's get tire pressure monitor system , air temp sensor in the intake hose near the throttle body. The engine and trans controller is one unit now . The purge solenoid for the emission system has been moved from the right front frame rail near the headlamp to a bracket on the brake booster and master cylinder. Two new colors -onyx green and almond . There is also a lot of other things that have been improved, such as wiring harness plugs and connectors for better retention and durability . Parts have been redesigned to improve quality. These are the things most owners will never see or know about but improve the reliability of the 300 and all LH cars. I hope they fixed that speed sensor on the trans because it seems a lot of you have had problems with this part. When I find anymore new things you guys will be the first to know ,as always . ..................Otto
  • sirharpersirharper Member Posts: 112
Is the tuner package the version you guys had trouble getting the prototypes on the trucks due to their height (or lack thereof)?
  • rogor2krogor2k Member Posts: 385
When the Tuner edition is released next year, do you think any of those parts will be available from the dealers (body side moldings, etc) or will you have to have the right VIN to order them?
  • mikeyjohnmikeyjohn Member Posts: 365
Thanks for the heads up, it's nice to have someone on the inside. Thanks again!!!!!!!!! and enjoy your two weeks off!!!!! and don't drink to much of that "I AM CANADIAN" pop. LOL

I spoke with this guy for over half an hour about his upcoming 400m a little over a month ago. He said two magazines were coming down to review it. He said it would do 0-60 under 6 seconds without the help of NOS and with NOS in the very low 5's. This 400m also has "True" Dual exhaust, 20 inch rims, ProwlerPro gears, and intake I believe. He also said he had quite a few owners interested, I suprised no one here has noticed this place before. The only reason I know is becuase I frequent the Prowler Sites regularly.

And if you want any of his parts he is the only one that will install them. He is planning on letting a shop in Dallas do the mods, but right now you MUST drive to Colorado to have these mods done. A trip there just might be worth it!

I check his site everyday waiting for an update. The gears are the biggest mod there, something every Performance Prowler owner has. He also has Prowler headers, but the last I heard he was still working on 300m headers.

If your really interested he will be at SEMA this fall in Las Vegas. I suggest everyone makes the effort to get there.

just was at dealers going thru the order book for 2002 and 2002.5 special..

2002 same as 2001 with tire pressure monitor as an option

2002.5 standard : ground effects, 18" aluminum rims, php, tire pressure monitor, couple other small things, i dont remember them.....

both have differences from the 2001 in ways we wont see. better sensors, computer etc etc...

the dealer just told me that the dollar amound of repair is how much my car has depreciated, but we wont know for sure till the car is fixed and they can do a thurough estimate. i dont believe it could be that much though, right?

p.s. im getting a 2002 special. no way around it. he said he's not sure, but thinks we can go ahead and place orders for them now....

rogor : looking forward to getting my packet! hopefully today or tomorrow! :)

I will let you know how it goes. I hope to get the wires run tonight, since the wife is out of town. The basslink is coming to my office and I am taking wed-fir off so I probably won't install it till next week, but once it's in I'll get pics and let you know how it sounds. As for the center speaker I just left it in place. The 6x9's in the rear are still going to receive a full range signal from the head unit, so to eliminate the lower frequencies from these you will want to place a capacitor in line on the positive speaker lead to each one. This will filter out the low bass frequencies that are causing the 6x9's to distort, and thus theoretically making them more of a midrange/midbass speaker. (as much of one as can be expected from a dual cone full range infinity 6x9)
  • ottowrkrottowrkr Member Posts: 778
Not sure about that ride height problem ? and getting on the truck . As we have only built one at the plant and its still there , so I dont know where that came from . As for being able to buy the parts needed to build your own Tuner , I dont see why not. But the price would be the biggest problem for sure. Hey phases78 so your going to be the first-great . As I find out more about this package I will let you know. When you actually do the deal let me know ;-))

Just a simple question from a simple guy. I bought the 99M in the most gorgeous platinum color I have seen on a production vehicle. Then DC suddenly discontinues it, and goes to silver. I hope that they are holding the platinum color back a couple of years to reintroduce and use on the 300 Hemi C, but if not I'd like to know why this color was discontinued. It can't be problems with the paint because my M is now 3 years old and the paint is perfect.

Your little joke is not funny anymore - posting messages repeatedly throughout Town Hall is considered spamming, for one thing, and as you have been repeatedly been told, your source does not exist.

So you can stop posting and reposting this message now - those of us who enjoyed the joke the first time around are now a little tired of it.

hey dude, what's up with those failing engine speed sensors that cause the car to limp to the dealer? It happened to my 300M twice and now a few other people have reported it.

I always thought when it came to American/German mergers that the smaller company(MB) usually takes over the larger more profitable company(C). Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I recently installed the Borla. I feel that it made a noticeable difference in performance, but I didn't do an instrumented before and after comparison. If I had to guess, I'd say that Borla's claim of an added 16 bhp is about right. One thing you should be aware of is that resonance from the Borla creates a passenger compartment drone at about 2200 - 2600 rpm. It is annoying enough to me that I followed up with Borla and others on this board. Borla is sending me a pair of annular venturis that must be tack-welded into the exhaust system, which they claim will eliminate this droning resonance. If I were to do it all over again, I'd order the Borla with the venturis already installed to avoid the additional time and expense of retrofitting the venturis. Incidentally, this droning does go away completely once you get up to about 85 mph.
  • herrmdoggherrmdogg Member Posts: 69
Well my problem has been resolved and I can once again go 50 MPH without being at 5500 RPM's. They had to put in a new solenoid pack. They said that for some reason it had failed but they don't know why. So I will be on my way up to Dayton, Ohio tonight after I leave work to drop my car off for the air suspension cylinder replacement.

By the way, is anyone going to NOPI this year in Atlanta?

Can you tell me whether the steering wheel part that is covered with leather, is actually wood underneath? I'm debating taking the leather off if it's the same wood grain as the top part. Thank for letting me know.

For those of you in snow country, what tires do you put on in the winter? I have the Michelin's on a 2001 M, PHP.
