Yah, see my post last week about renting a Chevy Cavalier in Little Rock. Almost lost it going around a freeway entrance curve. Bad GM, BAD! :>)

Took the M up to Boy Scout camp at Possum Kingdom in North Texas. Had to negotiate a half mile of very rough, rocky goat track of a road. I remember thinking how glad I was I still had the minimal but adequate stock ground clearance. The Silver Bullet handled it with style and grace.

Your Big Red is perfection. Let it be. ... or not!

Be glad that you have remote posts. My battery is in the spare tire well under the trunk floor. I can't wait until I need to jump one of our other cars. :~(

I'm still here, just not posting as much as I (we) used to. Not much to report, my '99 Platinum Bullet continues to offer me a great, trouble-free driving experience. The end of this month is a biggie, I'll own 2/3 of the car and the warranty will be 2/3 over!
I'm not into mods, really like the car just the way it is. saving my $ for the next ride (ok, really next trip to Mohegan Sun! I posted about a month ago after my last trip. Got cleaned out...I'm 3-1 this year).
I hope your Cl-S continues to make you smile and eradicates any lingering memories of the trials and tribulations of Christine! As I have not needed the services of my 5* (knock plastic wood) I can't even complain about service!
23,500 miles and still diggin' this ride!
    I'll be back...

I just got my '01 M a couple weeks ago- It's perfect except that the small wood trim piece to the left of the steering wheel is a bit loose. I hate to bother going back to the dealer if it's a simple fix. Anyone know if it is held in by screws or is it a simple clip-in trim piece?

OK, this is gonna sound stupid and redundant, because I know this has been asked hundereds of times. I just don't want to have to scroll back and read through hundereds of messages just to find this out.

What is the proper syntax for posting a URL?

I have a site with a variety of wing pics I want to let everyone know about.

    Thanks,

    Brian

    laurasdada-

I figured you were still here like me. I'm not into mods either. Buy them the way they are. Keep them a few years and move on to something else. I have to say though that a lot of the cars look great with some of the mods. I love the dual exhaust. I think Chrysler should have done that in the first place! I would be scared stiff to do all this to a car under warranty and then have some big thing go wrong and have the dealer tell you that it's your fault because you added/changed something. Maybe if I had a ton of money it wouldn't bother me. When I had Christine, I stopped going to Jiffy-Lube, where I was going for YEARS, because I was so afraid that if something big happened to Christine, they'd TRY to blame me or Jiffy-Lube. I wasn't looking to give them ONE MORE excuse to add to their repitroire(sp). I've heard the horror stories about JL, but I never had a problem with them.

Glad your Platinum Bullet has been behaving! The CL is great! Have 4,300+ miles on it since 3/28/01! I NEVER drive that much! Only have a 3 mile trek to work. The rest is just driving for pleasure! I'll have to curb those desires or I'll reach the 50,000 mile end of warranty before one year is up! LOL...

ANYWAY, I wanted to tell you that another friend of mine won $450,000 on a Progressive Slot Machine at Mohegan Sun!!! YIKES! Now there is talk of a 3rd casino coming to CT! More money for the state coffers, but NO decrease in the state income tax! ;-((( Guess there's always hope.

It's also there because it helps lower the car's center of gravity for better handling (every little bit helps), and because of the fact that heat kills a battery over time. If it's away from the heat of the engine bay in a relatively cool location, the battery should theoretically last longer. Tell me that there's not some ingenious engineering in this car!! Plus, it clears out enough space to mount the Paxton Supercharger!! ;-)

Some recent posts asked how to cut the DC-supplied front license plate holder. I didn't see any reason to attempt to modify their holder. I filled the fascia holes with epoxy putty and painted them with touch up paint, then drilled 2 new holes for a chrome license plate frame I bought at an auto parts store. I think the lower part of the fascia could flex up if it hits a curb, so I secured my plate to the car only at the top (the bottom of the plate is bolted only to the bottom of the license frame). Nearly a year later, no problems. Here's a photo:

I have put up a website that shows a variety of wings for 300M's Plus it includes the places to get them from. If anyone has any other wings out there they would like me to include send me the URL.

Also, please disregard the name of the server. It is a friends that is still living his childhood.

The owners manual for my 2001 says :

"The use of premium gasoline will provide no benefit over high quality regular and mid-grade gasolines, and in some circumstances may result in poorer performance."

How is this so ? POORER PERFORMANCE !!!!!

It dosen't make sence that a higher octane fuel could give lower performance in a relatively high compression engine. OK 10.0 : 1 is not high but for a US production car in 2001 it is.

Has anyone experianced worse results with 91 or 93 ?

Denver - I think that's what I'm going to do too. It would be nice to have the support of the bracket that attaches in 4 places rather than 2, but the more I dink around with it the more I'm leaning towards just putting the plate in a nice chrome frame and drilling two new holes. Nice wicked photo too! :)

Dustin - More good information on the battery. I wonder how much of that was engineering and how much was a good excuse after-the-fact for having it down there. :) I'm sure they had the supercharger in mind. lol.

Silver - Thanks! I love that "or not". LOL!

Great collection. I think California-Dream has a second style as well. You've shown model "2N" which is what I have on my car. Here is a link to a photo gallery of my installation:

I think the battery placement is a consequence of the cab forward design which squeezes every bit of unused air space from out of the engine compartment and puts the space in the drivers compartment and trunk.......oops, where are we gonna put the battery....ahhh, how bout in the wheel well. Ya, that will lower the center of gravity for better handling....yada yada
  • denvermdenverm Member Posts: 358
brianw300: I had just finished a top speed run, and the air friction made my front plate glow! Actually, Colorado's plates are reflective, and I used a partial flash when I took the pic.

sdmike2: I forgot to mention that I applied a strip of adhesive-backed padding, about 1/16" thick and 1" wide (wrap for a tennis racket handle), along the top back of the plate, so it wouldn't just be the bare metal plate contacting the fascia.
  • scotianscotian Member Posts: 1,064
was a sick, sadistic b****** who obviously hated the 300M with every fiber of his or her existence.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Good idea on the padding. I think I'll have less emotional problems drilling into the plastic than I did drilling into the trunk for the spoiler. ;)
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
I agree. There had to be a better way than to drill ugly holes in the plastic...only to cover up part of the chrome trim! Whoever drilled the holes in my bumper should be shot. The plastic is all torn up and there are jags, sharp edges and scuffs all over. I didn't notice them until I removed the plate. Hopefully that's not Otto's job! lol!

Nice placement EH guys !!. Who was it that said that the battery was positioned there on purpose ??YEAH RIGHT . I think it was the only place left . I have heard the 2004 may even have the battery in the trunk .Guess that space was needed for something else. To all who think you have to remove the battery from inside the wheel well when the time comes to change it, there is a faster way.First turn your wheels all the way the left ,remove the airbox , take off the battery hold down bracket and push the plastic inner fender liner in towards the tire. This will allow you enough space to grab the battery and pull it up on its end. Don't worry it wont leak acid .This is how we do it . Saves a lot of time , the other way you have to remove the tire and rim, and remove those screws on the wheel liner . then pull the battery out. Way to long. Also the airbag control module keeps a reserve of power to deploy the bags as the battery is usually the first to be destroyed in a front end collision -Sorry Roger.

Thanks otto! Now, if you can just tar and feather the person that puts those front license plate brackets on the M....or maybe that's done as part of dealer prep.

I would imagine that the front plate holder would have to be attached at a dealership, not the factory.

I'm afraid I have more questions than answers.

    >>I have the H&R Springs, and they did in fact cause a vibration when installed... There was absolutely no vibration before the springs...

You know there was no vibration because... you felt none? Or something else? There was absolutely no vibration, or the stock springs dampened whatever vibration was there? How can you tell for sure?

    >>H&R is sending me an installation kit which raises the motor 1/4" to correct the drive line angle... I doubt they would send me this kit if their springs were not the cause ...

Depending on the cost of the part, it might be cheaper for them to give it to you than to talk to you on the phone. Or to refund your money.

Will raising the motor .25" correct a problem caused by lowering the car, what, 2"? (My Eibach springs lower by 1.2", and a salesman at Eibach told me they had many complaints.) What will it cost you to test their theory?

Really, I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying I'm not convinced. Can you explain how the springs cause the vibration? Is the vibration the same frequency as the rotation of the driveshaft? Why would you experience the vibration and not me? I have PHP, but that doesn't have anything to do with whether the motor is mounted differently, does it? The chain of cause and effect is not clear to me. But then again, I'm in software, not hardware.

Maybe this is something I'll never understand. It won't be the first thing, that's for sure. I'm just curious as hell why it works wonderfully for me and so many others are having difficulties.

"Does everyone win at slots but me?" LOL.... AND ME! This person is no big time player either. He never even plays the slots! It must have been the size of the jackpot that drew him.

The 3rd casino is planned for Canton/Preston???? Somewhere near the MA border. Can't remember the name of the tribe either. The townspeople don't want it! Time will tell.

    mykem-

The battery on my 96 Riviera was under the backseat! Never saw it or had to jump it so I don't know exactly where it was.

So the jist of drive line angles (same applies to half shafts) is for each degree +/- on either end, the opposing end needs to be the same degree -/+. This way the angles cancel each other out and prevent drive line (half shaft) vibrations. I know all too well about drive line angles having worked with many a lifted Jeep with short drive lines. If you change the height of the vehicle and do not adjust the angle of the pinion, you will get vibrations. Same holds true for the half shafts on the M. By lowering the angle of degree on either end has changed and may no longer be equal +/-, by lifting the engine/tranny mounts it may bring the shaft angles back to the proper orientation, or degree if you will. I don't know about .25 being enough or if it is worth the effort. With the troubles I have had with the stock struts (non-PHP), I will probably order the PHP springs and struts and toss the H&R springs in the trash........

    Keith,
have you ordered the spacer kit from H&R? They will send it to you free of charge. Also, before you start ordering factory parts and tossing others away I've checked my parts book. Apparently, The springs are the same front and rear regardless of which suspension you have in the car.. same springs as the LHS believe it or not. Also, there are three struts listed, luxury, firm-feel and sport suspension. This is the same three choices for front and rear. Finally, the anti-sway bars are the same, the only difference being in the bushings that hold the bar to the frame... probably different levels of hardness.
Other than the vibration you've experienced what are your impressions of the h&r springs in terms of how the car handles and how much it lowered the car. Are you running stock wheels and tires? Would appreciate a photo if you have one since im considering aftermarket springs.

    Mike
