Not much of a road trip - about 70 miles round trip to have brunch at the Broadmoor in Co Springs.
However, on the way back, encountered a big traffic tie up so we took the back way home. Different scenery, but a little longer travel time.
Even if a detour like that is longer in total time, moving along and enjoying the scenery is a whole lot better than crawling along in a plug of traffic!

Fin - doesn't look like things were too terribly far out of alignment, but I imagine that it doesn't take much movement to cause a lot of undue wear under the forces tire see. Does it feel any smoother now?

Funny, I didn't notice a difference, it seemed fine even after hitting the lunar crater. No doubt just a little could damage a tire over 10-20K miles, though.

Not totally a road trip, only the last 102 miles from the Kona airport. Budget upgraded my Ford Escape to a Nissan Armada with all the bells and NAV for $200 more for the 25 days. Much more comfy on the back roads of the Big Island. This is our own private snorkeling place.
We are at Kapoho the furthest East point in all the Islands. NO Tourists. Only rental homes in a gated community. Cleanest air on the planet. Nothing but ocean breezes across 2500 miles of Pacific Ocean.
Did you ignore the prohibition and go on the cross-island highway? I did, then went up Mauna Kea to have a look at all the observatories and the view, and this was is a 3-cylinder sub-compact. Lived to tell about it, and the rental company was none the wiser.
Armada says it is averaging 17.1 MPG. Closest restaurant and Grocery is 9 miles away. Found gas at Safeway for $2.89. About San Diego prices. Wish I had my Touareg here. Though diesel is $4.06.
You may think it is all fun and games when I have to run off all these little crabs before I can go in the water.
@gagrice That looks awesome. My wife wants to go to Hawaii, next year. Guess I should start planning now.
If you have never been to Hawaii, this place could be boring. We are 28 miles from Hilo and Walmart. My wife gets a library card and loves the Hilo library. We also do the thrift shops. I hit the mother lode at the Goodwill. They had 3 Tori Richards and a Reyn Spooner they just yellow tagged. $1.99 each. On eBay they can go for big bucks. I think the one with juke boxes is fairly old.
I dig the shirts, but I think you are right... my wife is not going for the "remote" experience.
Kona or Maui are better choices for good restaurants and the whole tourist thing. No sandy beaches on this side of the island either. Just wonderful fresh air.

So Gagrice - did that gecko try to sell you some Geico insurance Hard to beat a Hawaiian vacation whether you want lots of stuff to do or just want to kick back.

No VOG?
No VOG, the prevailing winds carry it over to Kona.
Yep. I suspect there are quite a few incidents there, caused by late exiters. It was orderly, but aggravating. Traffic was backed up to Factoria when I got in the mess.

Brutal. Hopefully the rest of the drive made up for it!

My road trip to Denver is coming up early next week. I'm leaving NC on Sunday, driving to Knoxville, TN and will stay with friends there. Monday will be Knoxville to Salina, KS, then on to Denver the following day. The first half of the trip isn't too bad but once you leave Kansas City there's a whole lot of nothing until you get to Denver.

I've not driven I-70 to the east of Denver, but I've heard the same thing.
Salina? Any particular reason you are overnighting there?

They have a Marriott and I can use points to spend the night there, plus it allowed me to get as far as possible on the first day. I could have stopped in Kansas City or maybe Topeka, but I plan on leaving Knoxville early Monday and it's only about 10 hours to KC so rather than get there around 5 pm and just sit in a hotel room all evening I wanted to drive as far as possible.
Salina is a touch over 13 hours which will be perfect, allows me to maximize distance on day 1 but still gives me some cushion if I hit major delays.

I was just looking at Google maps - saw some construction west of Knoxville.
I've only had two long days like that - the first was from Childress, TX (SE of Amarillo) to Phoenix - 15 hours. Second was a trip up the CA coast, from my hometown just north of LA to Eureka - something like 12 hours, very little of it on interstates.
17 hours to Naples at one shot... Someone of the female persuasion couldn't get ready by 0900, so we didn't get out until Noon. Two couples, three drivers... but, I was running on fumes the last 90 minutes (arrival at 0500).
I only drove about 12 hours of it.. but, it was just being awake that long.

When I lived in CA, my cousin's wife grandmother passed away in Phoenix. Took a trip to get furniture and other items from the house.
We were driving a pickup with a shell pulling a flatbed trailer. Left SoCal around 8on Friday night and got to Phoenix around 5 in the morning. Slept for 3-4 hours, then got up and played 18 holes of golf. Came back and loaded the truck and trailer with stuff, and left Phoenix around midnight, IIRC.
The drive back was horrendous. Sleep deprived, pulling a loaded trailer, through the desert with no scenery. We were switching off every 45 minutes or so. Finally, my cousin took it upon himself to do the last 2 hours on his own - through LA traffic.
I remember my eyes feeling like sandpaper had been rubbed on them when I got home.
Ah, to be young and dumb! (no offense thrown your way with that comment!)
My daughter and I left Fairbanks last night at about 8pm for a run to Anchorage. I wasn't planning on trying to make it all the way down there (about 375 miles) in one push, but then I also wasn't planning to take my daughter!
Without any family here now, I decided early on that my goal was to make it to Byers Lake wayside before crashing for the night. We made it, without incident (and at >29 mpg on the Q7), and I announced to my daughter that it was time for sleep. She balked. "Dad, can't you just keep driving?! I'm not sleepy at all!" I said, "well, you're not dead either, and you might be if I try to keep driving..." That was a LONG day after riding my bike to work that morning, working all day, spending two hours at band practice at my church, then driving another 3.5 hours....
Woke up this morning at about 0500 and was in Anchorage at 0800. All according to plan! I'm at the Audi dealership now with the Q7 in service for the issue I as having back in March, as well as an engine oil leak and some other odds and ends.

My daughter took some photos with my iPod while we were driving last night. This is the only one that wasn't terribly grainy. This is through Broad Pass at about 2215 last night.

Yeah, you can make some pretty stupid decisions when you are in your 20's.
The last long distance run I made was 5 years ago - Denver to LA. Got all the way to Mesquite, NV before crying uncle - 10, maybe 11 hours. But, it was all during the day, and cruise control helps a lot.
0500 will be the order of the day Saturday. Wheels up for Indianapolis and race day on Sunday. Oddly enough, it's within a half mile of 500 miles on the nose from my driveway to the Speedway. Too bad we can't borrow 8 cars from the field. Not as much leg room, but we'd get there a heck of a lot faster

When I was younger (think Rick Mears era), our Indy trips were labeled "30 in 30". We were closer than you... left around 0800 on Saturday.
Up at 5AM coffee while watching the sun rise. Kapoho farthest Eastern point on the Hawaiian Islands. Leaving our Villa home for last 2 + weeks headed to Kona for last 8 days. Stopped in Waimea for possibly the best food in all the Islands. Hawaiian Style Cafe.
I just completed my drive from Charlotte, NC to Denver. Overall a fairly uneventful trip, 1,650 miles over three days. Monday was the longest with about 900 miles from Knoxville, TN to Salina, KS, then completed the trip yesterday arriving in Denver around noon MT.
The best part of the trip was that somehow I hit no traffic jams the entire route, no construction, avoided rush hours, etc. So I averaged close to 70 mph for most of it. Overall not a bad drive, it took 4 tanks of gas in the Touareg, that last leg from Salina to Denver really killed mileage. The steady climb up to 5,000 feet, a decent headwind and cruising at 82 really killed mileage. The average for that tank was 17.6, previous tanks were around 22.5.

Afternoon, terrible gridlock (took nearly an hour to go ~10 miles on 405, crashes in both directions), and sun:
Late night, clear open city streets (near the site of the pothole):
It looked like things were going along in an orderly fashion, at least during that 60-second clip.
The morning drive was actually nice even in the rain. Comfortable car.
Never tire of watching the sun rise with a nice cup of Kona coffee.
Next door neighbor getting fish from his net.
One of my favorite spots on the Big Island is Laupahoehoe park. It is where the RR hauled the sugar to the ships.
Today my grandson took the zipline across Akaka falls.

We drove South and went to the Painted church and coffee mill at Kealakakua Bay.
