FINALLY! Took delivery last night of my shining silver Pro ES. Everything went well with the pick-up except the weather. It's been so nice here in NY for over a week with warm April weather...so, last night it was rainy/misty a little windy and about 38 degrees.

My first impression of my new Pro after the first drive home and 35 miles commute:

The rear speakers are really horrible - pretty tinny. I cannot believe this system came from the same people who built the CD system in my wife's 2000 MPV ES. Hers is great, but it also has the separate tweeters and subwoofer right from the factory. the sound is crisp and very clear. I hope to change out my rear shelf speakers with a better quality 6x9 and that should do the trick.

The Pro drives very nicely. The gas pedal is very sensitive and this will be the one thing that I'll have to get more acclimated to for smoother shifts. It's not bad, just different from my prior car. The car felt very sure footed in the wet, thanks to the Dunlop Sport 5000 on it. I'm looking forward to some slick stuff to be honest. No wallowing here, it is nice a firm.

I can't comment on performance until I get 3,000 on it. I just can't bring myself to go with Mazda's 600 miles break in.

The car is VERY quiet. That is the single biggest thing for me to get used to. Quiet for me anyway. My old Porsche allowed you to hear every glorious mechanical sound, from the transaxle to the engine to, well, everything. By today's standards it's quite loud, but I've grown comfortable with it and all those sounds were like friends you'd speak to every day. The Pro is eerily quiet in contrast. Not bad, but I miss the exhaust note at low rpms. A sport exhaust that isn't a buzzin' hornet will be must find. While I'm only changing gears at 3k for a while, I can hear that the engine will have a sound, but the exhaust is almost inaudible at 3k.

That's about all. I am very happy with the car overall. Having to change the exhaust and rear speakers are things I expected going in. I did have one problem though. When I went to start the Pro for the first time, I had expected it to be a simple flick of the key and it would light up. Nope. Just like my wife's MPV, you have to turn it over for a second and a half to two and then it catches. Well, the first turn over was very short, I let go and it didn't catch. When I went to turn it over for the second time, the starter did one of those trying to turn over with a dead battery attempts and then turned over and started. But, to be 100% honest, I don't know if it was the starter or if I inadvertently let the clutch up a bit and cut power to the starter myself. I never had to depress the clutch to start the 944 so the error may have been mine and not the Pro. It has not happened again, so I'll see. Other than that, looking forward to many Zoom Zooms and talking to you all.

Next time I'm at the parts dept, I'll ask them to look it up and buy one for my 99 (they're used to my going into the back room with them to look at diagrams...well some of them, anyway). The filter usually costs from $5-15, depending on the size and any other parts needed.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Are you still going to buy a fuel filter if it's in the fuel tank? I looked under the hood and I can't find it. I know what a fuel filter looks like too, I've replaced them on many different kinds of cars. If it was under the hood, I don't know why a dealer wouldn't want to charge you an outrageous price to replace it (59.99) like they do on other Mazda vehicles. I seriously doubt it's under the hood, otherwise the dealer would replace them.

Yes, how 'bout that snow...suprised my back doesn't hurt this morning. Shoveled at home, shoveled at work, shoveled in the middle of the street when my car got stuck...

We missed you at chat last night! Fowler took over as bartender, but all he had was Heineken.

Looking forward to Saturday...never been to an Auto Show before.

Have you all seen the Mazda commercial with the silver Protege ES in it yet? It shows a Miata sliding around in what looks like the desert. Then a Protege comes along behind it and starts following it closely. It says something like, "Why should the sporty cars have all the fun?" or something. It's pretty cool. Saw it last night on NBC.
  • yooper53yooper53 Member Posts: 286
Sensitive gas pedal..that was the first thing I noticed on the car. You'll wake up one morning soon and it won't be sensitive any more.

Buzzing hornet..aside from the "spoiler of looks" on my '01 ES the only other thing I don't like is the buzzin' hornet. When passing on two-lane hwy's I generally crank the volume before going to full throttle. :o)

speedypt...re: the Artic Alpins, you got that right. Worth every penny. Plus now I can swap out, and torque the wheels myself, a big plus. Not to mention the wear on the oem Dunlops saved.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
    Paul:
That commercial is a perfect demonstration of the difference in handling of a FWD and a RWD. For the last couple days I've been reminding myself how much fun the Miata is.

    Todd:
There is no paper element in the fuel system on these vehicles. There is only a screen in the tank. Anything that passes through the ultra-fine screen will flow right through the system.

The Mazda commercial has been running for a while now. I think it debuted sometime around the last superbowl! I love that commercial!

The chat(s) yesterday were nice! We continued at Yahoo! after Edmunds closed its doors on us, and there was some heady (!) talk of starting an e-zine. I hope its worn off by now. For those who aren't on the club yet, consider joining, if only for the planned chats twice a week (Tue and Thu).

Also, i took the lpunge and bought myself one of those cheap-o strut bars off ebay for my 95 DX. I'll install it next week (when i hope to receive it) and let everyone know if its worth the $30 + $12 S&H I paid for it. Don't foresee any installation problems (no cruise control, and the seller asures me all parts and intructions are included) - but I will post and check with some of you (big_h and speedypt, in particular) if I do have a problem :-)

That puts that issue to rest. I'd better take another look. I must've gotten confused with my '89 323 since that's the last engine bay I saw(when I tightened the accessory belts).

I have them on my Pr05 on 15" steel wheels and couldn't be happier with them.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I wonder why Mazda decided not to use a fuel fitler? Every car has one of those screens in the tank. Mazda must be confident in the quality of US gasoline. Now I have to make extra double sure not to fill up after a tanker truck fills up the gas station. I wish Mazda would have used a secondary fuel filter like almost all other cars.

I bought a lifetime alignment/rotation warranty from a Firestone dealer with whom I do a lot of business for my PRO. He told me almost all new cars are out of alighment after the ride to the dealer ( something about how they are secured in that truck). Anyway, it cost $115 and I know you need to be suspicious of infinite no of aligns for that price, whether they will do it conscientiously, but these people seem to be honest. I had one done at 2000 and it did improve the steering, But it's now pulling to the left a little bit again. I'll call the dealer about the free alignment. I was not referring to oil changes when I asked about 7500 maint. I'm having that done every 3K. I just wondered if other than that there was anything else worthwhile to justify paying the dealer for 'eyeballing' the engine compartment.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
The civic doesn't use a paper element either.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
wow, at that price they better give you lifetime alignment and rotation.

I'm no longer sure if it's the road or the wheels that's causing the pulling. I was driving on roads that I don't usually go by last night, and the pull seems to disappear, though the steering wheel still seem a little bit off to the right when the car is going straight...

I think I'm going nuts and making myself believe the wheels are misaligned, but they are off if you look closely... AAAAAAAAHHHH!!

I spent a winter a few blocks from Lake Michigan. One morning I had icesickles hanging from my moustache one minute after exiting my building. Geesh!

Did your nostrils freeze together too? All you northerners know what I'm talking about.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
I usually leave the house with wet hair in the morning. If the temp is right, it freezes by the time I get in the car.

And yes, Todd, I am familiar with the frozen nose syndrome :)
  • speedyptspeedypt Member Posts: 200
FNS...I've suffered from that too. I actually kind of liked getting the ice in my moustache and beard (when I had them).

Trigger got treated to a bath today (at the soft-cloth car wash) and brought her home and stuck her into the garage for the night!

Dale...the auto show is really neat. Lots of cars to sit in, compare and really get a reference as to "relative" roominess. It was based on this that I bought my current 2000 ES. I'm actually excited to see the new RX-8 and hopefully the Mazda 6...I believe they will be at the show. I actually saw the prototype RX-8 a few years ago at the San Diego auto show and was very impressed then. If I keep having months like the one I just finished up at work, I might actually buy one of those!

Dale...I'll confirm via email some details for Saturday the 9th.

    Regards,

    Pete

There are 2 of them and they both are in the tank. One is a "high pressure" and one is a "low pressure" filter. I guess that means there is one at the intake and discharge sides of the pump. Not a normal item for regular replacement. From the diagrams I have it
looks like they're an integral part of the fuel pump and would probably only be replaced with pump replacement.

Call the dealer about your wife's 2001 MPV. My wife's 2000 was brought back to the dealer to have updated parts put in that has greatly reduced the cranking time. As it turns out, Mazda knew about the problem, but introduced the problematic system anyway while working on the fix. I would have thought that your 2001 would already have them though.

Ha ha! Talked to my dad today and he complained about all the crappy weather. Especially since he recently decided to put off a snowblower until next year.

As for me, it was unseasonably cold here in sunny southern New Mexico, it hovered around 42 degrees and was a bit breezy all day :)

I'm also quite familiar with the frozen nose syndrome as well as crunchy-hairitis. At one point in high school I had swimming my last period of the day. In the middle of winter. That was always a joy to wander outside, still wet, and wait 30 minutes for a bus with a bad heater. Can't say I miss it much.

Why aren't you hopping a plane to come up here for the Auto Show next Saturday?

Can't really tell you how happy-happy I am. On a good note, the Potenzas handled snow quite respectably. Not bad for 195-55s with little thread left.

I'm going to test some Pro club decals printed on clear film and see how they show up. I'll take photos of them on the car and post them. ;)

They will be in colors because there isn't any white ink available for inkjet printers.

Dale: I'd love to, if only I could afford it. Right now it's questionable whether I have enough money for FOOD, and aside from that I have a trip to Vegas and spring break coming up that I need to magically find some cash for. Anybody have a money tree they'd like to lend me?

I've been trying to find a part time job here for a while with no success. It's fairly sad, it's almost not worth my time to work down here because most jobs pay in the neighborhood of $5.50 and even a lot of the skilled or management jobs will only pay $6-7 an hour. Yikes!
  • edmund2460edmund2460 Member Posts: 293
Remember a 4 wheel alignment is around $50 or more. I've had it done once already on this warranty and after the next time, it should be free. I'm a little leary of these lifetime warranties. Sears did lifetime alignment many years ago and I bought it for two of my cars. As a amatter of fact I still own one of them, it must have been over 12 years ago. But I quit using it after about 4 or 5 times because I didn't think they were doing a good job. By the way, I just called the dealer and I have an appt. to have the PRO aligned under the 12 mth adjustment. So thanks to this room for the info. When I'm going straight on a nice smooth road I feel the wheel pushing against my right hand and I have to apply a little bit of torque in the clockwise direction.

it was time for a new car. I was looking elsewhere on this site and looked up the TSB's on my former '96 Ford Contour, V6. There are Two Hundred Sixty One!! It just doesn't seem possible. It boggles the mind. Ford has a better idea. Quality is job 1. So when you see people expressing concerns about Ford content in upcoming Mazdas know that they are legitimate concerns and count me among them.

    Since I've spent nearly every winter of my life here, it's a bit cold today, but this winter has been unbelievably mild. Anyone who whines about 30 degrees in February in Chicago doesn't belong here, IMHO!(-;

your future? Does Ford have a future? Was quailty ever job #1? Yes, but they couldn't find anyone to take it. Unions you know.

Ford's recovery plan: Compete with Daimlier-Chrysler one-to-one, a new retro car to challenge the PT Cruiser -- the Model-T. Updating it, make the old starter crank where you wind it up.

Diversify stocks, buy more Enron while it's cheap.

This was from an e-mail my mom sent me today:

"On my way to KMart, I passed a white Dodge pick-up truck, with custom stacked taillights, a custom finished matching white steel cargo cover over the truck bed...and grafted to the top rear of the cargo cover, a normal sized spoiler.

Like otherwise it might achieve vertical lift-off????"

Well, I've been driving for a a few days now and have really grown to like the Pro. It's head and shoulders above the Porsche in the wet. Now I'm hoping the forecast for some messy snow in a few days comes true. I want to get the feel for the pedal's pulsing when ABS kicks in. I know I'll be less happy in the spring and summer in the dry. But, I'm planning on adding the strut tower brace and the muffler so it should get marginally better.

For what it is, it is a very nice car to drive. Certainly there is not a better car in the entry level market. Now, if it would just get a bit warmer so I can do my first car wash and find out if the car is a "weeper". You know, the ones where it's impossible to dry because water keeps weeping out form all the cracks and crevices.

i have them also in the 185-65-14 range on my lx2.0 and am also very happy, this morning we got 4 inches in a short time on our back country roads (no winter maintenance as we say) and had no problem at all.

Buyer beware on that strut tower bar!! I would honestly recommend against ordering the Mazda strut tower bar. They don't give you the right parts, they don't give you a parts list, and they don't give you directions. It isn't just the strut tower bar, it's an assortment of little parts and brackets. The first time they sent it to me, they gave me the wrong cruise control bracket. Now I find out that they didn't send the bolts to bolt on the strut tower bar. I don't know what else I'm missing because I don't have directions or a parts list. To make a long story short, I'm going to send it back.

To answer your question, I am 25 years old.
  • rbrooks3rbrooks3 Member Posts: 174
That's why these lists are great things. I would not make this purchase without getting feedback from others. Who was the manufacturer of your bar and where did you buy it from so I know where to stay away from?

The strut tower bar is a Mazda part. I ordered it from mazdastuff.com. I don't think you will have better luck if you get it someplace else as Mazda is the one who packs the kits. I'm am definetely not the only one who has had problems with this kit.
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
Since you ask, I'll be 25 soon - can't wait for my insurance rates to drop further (its already cheaper in VA than it was in UT)!

Strut tower brace - I'm awaiting my (cheap - 30+12) aftermarket chrome (plated?) brace that I bought off ebay. I will post a report about the quality, and the completeness (or lack thereof!) of the package. And also about the improvement (hopefully) in handling. I'm told it will be very apparent in my case though, what with my 175/70-13 wheels and softer 95 suspension! Bought it from a (highly rated) ebay seller 'lightspeed'. I also mentioned to the folks at the Yahoo! group that if they're considering this, waiting a few more days will give you the benefit of another source of info! This seller has one or two for sale every couple fo days, on ebay.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
I also got mine from mazdastuff.com, I guess I was lucky(?) they sent the kit with all the required pieces except the cruise control bracket, which they corrected and sent me the correct one within a few day's notice. The bar is the same on the MP3(yellow color), the bracket is from the P5, so the cruise control would fit under the bar.

here's a pic of the installed bar:

    Strut Bar installed

you could try ordering the strut bar kit from your mazda dealer, but it might cost you more than the $140 they sell at mazdastuff.com.

I would also recommend looking into the corksport strut bar. It'll require some cutting of the cruise control bracket but there's no additional pieces to install other than the bar itself.
