yikes! that's a heck of a drive. I'd consider going 4-5 hours away, but not 24-5 hours.

malt, go check out www.protegeclub.com/forum , Jerry's been over there trying to set up a meet for people in SoCal. Quite a few Protege owners in SoCal I tell ya (and all generations too!)

    Michael,
Last time he flew in from California and I took the day off of work to go to the first showing. But I'm just not that much of a geek anymore, lol. I'm still realllllly excited, but kids change priorities I guess.
It does look really good though, and I think it will kick butt over Episode I.

    MaltB,
I was answering multiple questions. No one is preparing you any food. They are preparing it for Meade.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Any idea why he stopped posting here? I hate the EZ board software. It's anything but easy.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
maybe because there are more Protege owners over at Protegeclub than here? :)

    401 miles on one fill-up.
    12.9gal.
    31.1mpg!!!!!!!!!
Same Shell station and same 87 octane pump.

2001 Protege ES 2.0 automatic. I see 27-28mpg on my daily commute but I tried driving around 65mph instead of my usual 70-80mph (and 2-3 daily trips to redline) and I finally cracked 400 miles on one tank.

The only thing of note is that I have Mobil 1 in the engine and 35psi all around which may or may not make a difference.

Has anyone done any better than 31.1mpg with the auto 2.0?
  • dsm6dsm6 Member Posts: 813
FYI (you asked for auto, but I have a manual - sorry), I average around 32-34 mpg in 02 ES 5-speed. About 70/30 hwy/city split with speed limit on hwy of 75mph. Sometimes, if I do some aggressive driving, or run the AC some (haven't had it through a summer yet, so just occasional use), I get around 31mpg on a tank full.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
That I've had is 625 km which is about 388 miles...that was one trip, 7 hours one way. My speed was a little *ahem* higher than recommended though, so with a slower speed, I think the mpg could have been better.
    Oh, mine is manual also.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
... have bigger gas tanks than the 2000s. I can't get any more than about 11.5 gallons in mine, and that's when the light's been on for 30 miles or so and the needle's right on the E mark. And I never get more than about 325 or 330 miles out of a tankful, and putting back in 11, I get about 30 mpg. Now if I'm doing a lot of highway driving, I'll maybe get 360 or so, but that's pushing it -- and that still gives me 32.8 mpg. So the new ones must have slightly larger tanks. Maltb, do you know?

BTW, I'm sitting here viewing this page on my brand-new, 1-hour-old 22-inch flatscreen monitor!!! WOOOOOO-HOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
The 2001's have a 55 litre tank...which is about 14.5 gallons (US liquid).
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
2001+ Proteges have 14.5 gallon tanks, if I recall correctly.

and 99-00 Proteges have 13.2 gallon tanks, for those that don't know ;-)

    Wide-eyed Meadester
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Wide-eyed because your monitor is so bloody huge now? LOL!
Are we talking flat panel LCD or just a CRT monitor?
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Bloody huge. It's a CRT. Samsung SyncMaster 1200NF. 1600x1200 resolution! I just jumped from a 17-inch to this, and man, what a difference!

  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Nice monitor! Now if only I could get one at home to play my games on... :D
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
that's too big for desktop use. Even on my 17" I don't maximize most windows.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'm not in awe. I don't think my TV is even that big.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
... and mess around with graphics like I do, then the bigger the better.

(And hey, I have a 36-inch TV at home ... I refuse to make the jump to anything bigger because that would be a projection TV, and I hate them. My 36-inch Toshiba is still a by-God CRT!)

Is funny though, come to think of it ... this monitor is two inches bigger than the TV I had in my living room until I got the 36-inch last January, LOL!

  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
Although it turns out my tv is larger than I thought. I thought it was a 19, but it measured 20 (viewable, none of this nonesense about quoting the physical size of the tube when you can't use the border).

Have to admit though, I do like the large monitor for my work (some CAD), even though it's overkill for word-processing etc.

Now, what I'd like is that new 23in LCD that Apple's put out. It's supposed to be even brighter and more vivid than their 22, which I thought looked beautiful. Too bad they cost so much. :(
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
To come down in price, that is. $5000-6000 is too steep for me. I'd rather spend that on a nice car. :)
  • dsm6dsm6 Member Posts: 813
    too little money.

and for anyone that is struggling to keep up, I reccomend a good audio book that is free on Audible.com: Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

Yeah, I mentioned protegeclub to Jerry because he was trying to get a SoCal meet together...I fear I've unleashed a monster. He's been all over that board like....well, I won't say it.

    ...thin ice.

Would you really like me to go into my e-mail account and add up the minutes, the hours, the DAYS, that I've had to wait for responses from you?? (And you know I'd do it, too!)

    Time for a PROTEGE question:

How many Protege owners does it take to change a lightbulb?
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
    a light bulb?
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
    smart a***
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Yes, I believe you would. So don't. But I think that lately, we're probably fairly even on that comparo.

Now, on to more "important" things, like your dumb-assed riddle ...

    THREE!

One to change the bulb, another to tell you that your replacement Japanese bulb was of inferior quality to his new German one and won't have as much resale value, and another to tell you you should've replaced it with a Bulb SI.

    Meade

P.S. "smart a***"? Usually each asterisk replaces a letter ... so what's this? Smart Ants? Alpo? Acid?

    Oh excuse me...

I must have taken a wrong turn. I thought this was a discussion about Proteges.

    Dale's section:

It was nice & hot... mid 90's. I'm kind of mad that I drove that far and didn't even get to meet the rat... I mean mouse. I'm not going to drive through WV again seeing I got a ticket on the way home (70 in a 50 zone). I'll talk to you more @ Thursday's chat.
    ======================================================================
    Pat's section:

After driving 2000 miles(round trip,) the Protegé5 handled nicely, even though the vibrations from the tires(17" Kumho 712)started to get to me after 9 hours of non-stop driving.

..comparo in JUNE Car and Driver...

    I quote...
Highs: Athletic stride through the twisties, taut control responses, sporty cockpit feel, console perfectly shaped for painless bracing of your right leg.

Lows: Same low eye point as in sedan, (HUH?) buzzy vibrations at most speeds, loud engine

The verdict: A sports car in station wagon clothes.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I haven't heard from you in a while! Thought something had happened to you or maybe you'd just given up on us.

I WAS talking about Proteges -- I was responding to Dale's question about how many Protege owners it takes to change a light bulb. I also posted a bunch of information this morning on this topic, and on the Protege5 topic, about MAPP III. Still haven't heard from you on your possible attendance ...

    Good to hear from you!

Same low eye point as in sedan

What do they want? SUV height visiblity??
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
That was too funny. :) And you forgot to add that the German bulb would be twice the price.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
    Paul, that took guts!

Now, if Dale had asked "how long would it take to change the light bulb," we Protege owners could've said "10 minutes, unless it's German ... then it takes at least two weeks and needs a rubber treatment."

    LOL

I'm outta here for the day, guys (much to Pat's dismay, I'm sure ;-) ) -- so everyone have a great zoom home tonight, and I'll see you tomorrow -- NINE DAYS TILL MAPP III!!! Be there or be in the river!!!

Most of the cars in that comparo were tall wagonoids of the Toyota Matrix/Suzuki Aerio/Chrysler PT Cruiser sort, which theoretically can offer a more commanding view of the road, though C/D panned the Matrix/Vibe twins for too low a driver's seat despite the extra height.

(If anyone cares, I once scored 32.7 mpg on a 2.0 automatic - in the 300-lb heavier 626. Repeat: once.)
  • tomcivilettitomciviletti Member Posts: 207
I have decided to trade in my pro. I just cannot abide driving a vehicle with a low eye point any longer. How AM I supposed to check out woman drivers with short skirts, anyway?
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
How else am I supposed to see under all those SUVs for traffic ahead???

P.S. THREE POSTS LAST NIGHT EVERYONE? Poor ... POOR!!!
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
Jeez, didn't even know there was a name for it.

Actually, I had kind of wished that the Protege sat just a tad higer. When you're a little shrimp (height-wise, anyway), every little bit helps.

But once I started driving it, I didn't notice any visibility problems.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Have you guys ever sat in a Civic? Hell, one reason I bought the Protege was because of its extremely comfortable, perfect-height seats!

Perhaps Car & Driver said it best back in May 2000 (pulled from the article on their website):

"The seat knows exactly how the orthopedist told you to sit. It's easy to find a good driving position in this car."

  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
My thoughts eggsactly Meade. I drive both the Civic and Pro5 almost everyday, and I love how much taller I sit in the P5. It was a pleasant surprise after feeling like I'm sitting on the ground in my Civic.
While it's not 4x4 pickup truck height, I think my Pro5 has a very high eye height for a small car.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
    Did they forget about that?

Anyhoo, yeah, the P5 does sit a couple to few inches shorter. Still, in a PT Cruiser, Matrix or anything like that, I still couldn't see over or around an Explorer/Expedition/Excursion/Excavator/Excessivator thingimajig. Given that, I'd prefer to hug the road (not scrape it, as in an MR2) than feel all tippy in the turns.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
For those of us who are vertically-challenged, you can raise the seat only so high...after that, it's harder to reach the pedals. :)
