in fact after that incident, I went visiting a new-found relative in Shenandoah, Va.

Well to cut to the point, that relatives' young kid, mebbe 12-14 years of age, blurted out a question, when I parked my car in their lot:
    "Is that your BMW?"

    Was as I happy :)
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
That kid is going to be great in politics. Did he, also, say you looked like a movie star?
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
come to think of it......he did say that I looked like a top shot;)

    c'mon......can't stand a little praise...eh?
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
I'm jealous. The best guess someone has made about my Pro is Lexus.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I remember someone called my 01 Pro ES (the black one) an Audi A4 once. :)
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
I had parked my car outside a strip mall and few youngsters were hanging out on the sidewalk....One of them could not resist the urge and came over to my car, looking at it from all sides with awe & disbelief....(you should have seen his face) and then finally popping the question

"Cool Man, what car is this...?"

I had half a mind of saying to him
"Couldn't u read it on the trunk?"

But his question was a praise after all and I replied as gently as possible "it's a Mazda"

Am I the only one that goes out of his way, to park where it will not be "dinged"?
  • boggseboggse Member Posts: 1,048
I tend to. Although, I seem to have more problems with chips on my hood than with door dings.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I know what you mean about chips. I got my first one in my car this past weekend, in the right fender where it curves around from the headlight. And this Sunday will be a year that I had the car. It just couldn't wait one more week... :(
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
I park way out to try to avoid dings.

At least it's a small one in a rear fender.

Still, I was PO'd when I found it.
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
Were these chips, you suppose, caused by rocks (or similar objects)? I have 3 small chips, clustered together, at the front edge of my hood. Have not seen any, new, since I applied a thick coat of Rain Dance "up front" (probably just a coincidence).
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
I parked "way out" in a large retail store, parking lot recently. When I returned, there were two other "driver's cars" parked next to mine. Looked like a scene from "Fast and furious".
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I know the chips are caused by rocks on the highway. I used to have a magnetic bra on the edge of the hood in the Protege when I had it. I bought it to cover up a huge scratch someone left in the hood with a key, but it helped keep the rock chips off the car as well. I drive the highways 95% of the time, and they always seem to be doing construction around the MD/DC/VA area, so it helps. Thinking about buying a bra for my VW now that I found a chip in the front of it. :(

    Can you say "zoom"?

It's an AWR 21.5mm rear swaybar...replaces the stock 14mm bar. This car flies around corners so much flatter than before, something that I wanted badly after test driving the Pro5.

  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
"something that I wanted badly after test driving the Pro5."

Does the Pro5 have a different rear sway bar? I thought the suspensions of the ES and P5 were identical?

Nice tires and nice Rhino ramps.

What I want to know is,

Was the speedometer at zero when you took that picture?

    ;);)

    P.S. Todd--Clint's car is a '99 LX.

If you don't mind me asking: how much?
Did you install it yourself? Easy to do or a pro's job? How long did it take?

I got my friends hook-up on the Rally Monkey on Sat nite.

We were having our usual poker nite and I told them atthe bottom of the 6th that the Rally Monkey would come on. And they did!

Pep Boys advertise a tire called Futura GLS in 205/50R/15 size for $61.99, and with 50,000 mile warranty. Anyone ever used these? Best price I've seen.
  • theparallaxtheparallax Member Posts: 361
Yes, the car was at 0 while taking that picture. (For once...)

Protege5online.com sells the bar via PayPal for $247...cheaper by using other methods but this was the easiest for me.

Installation took about 3 hours because it came with no instructions at all. The beefy endlinks are nice and adjustable, but are confusing. I was at the local do it yourself hobby shop putting the bar on and this is what held me up. I couldn't get them to go on right until a guy came over and helped me.

All in all, very much worth the price. Next on the list: Mazda MP3 struts and springs.

    A MazdaSpeed Protege Touring Car

"With engine mods to make 230 horsepower"!

  • ajil112ajil112 Member Posts: 9
Do you guys recommend the protege? I made a post about getting a new car, lookin to spend around 15k. Other cars im considering are the 2001 stratus/sebring, sentra and subuaru impreza. Heres some quick questions, whats a good site for protege pics and info, can i get a fairly nice one for 15k and does it have enough horses in it to have some fun?
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
A STRATUS? Are you outta your freakin' mind? I've had two as loaner cars in the past coupla years and they're about as "fun" as my mom's old 1978 Pontiac Grand LeMans! My take on the Sentra (almost bought one before buying my Protege) is that it's fun, but it has NO back seat room for adults. Believe me, if you ever want to carry more than one adult passenger, get in a Sentra, put the front seat where you like it, and then go TRY and sit behind yourself. Good luck! Don't know much about the Impreza although I think it's overpriced.

My 2000 ES 5-speed is my third Protege. I wouldn't have bought three if I didn't think they're fantastic cars. My wife (OK, with a little help from me) traded her 1995 Crapalier for a 2002 Protege5 last January. My 2000 now has 45,000 trouble-free miles on it, and hers just crossed 10,000 trouble-free miles.

One recommendation -- if you're looking for "fun factor," DEFINITELY get the 5-speed. I test drove both an automatic and a 5-speed and there was just no comparison. I was all set at age 35, after driving 5-speeds for 15 years, to be "luxurious" and finally get an automatic. But after test-driving both, guess what. Two and a half years later, I don't regret my decision at all!

    Zoom zoom!

I agree with Meade. Stay away from the Stratus/Sebring. Can you say "boing boing" as you drive down the freeway? It feels OK on smooth roads, but it definitely has an issue with joints on roads at speed. The glass distorts your view, and I found the interior to be not as comfortable (more volume, but not as well-placed). Your battery is also in a very vulnerable position (in front of one the driver-side tire). They're OK as rentals, but I wouldn't own one.

A Sentra is nice, if you don't need to carry anyone in the rear. It's roomier than the previous version, but still not as roomy as a Protege. Its suspension set-up is more tuned for comfort, although the sportier trim model will hold its own against a Pro. I still think the trunk pass-through is puny.

The Impreza felt cramped to me. Maybe it's the way they bring the sides of the car in so quickly. I just felt something was too close to my head. I thought the seats felt great (up front), and the controls are as good as the Pro's. The rear seat is still a joke, way worse than the Sentra's. I think some models don't offer a trunk pass-through. However, the Impreza does offer AWD, which may matter to you if you get a lot of snow/ice. This does lower mpg though.

You can get an LX-level Protege for around that price range. I think they're offering a substantial rebate on 2002 models ($2000?). What you don't get (from the ES): rear disc brakes, spoiler, black gauges w/ green lighting v. light grey ones w/ red lighting, smaller wheels (steel on 2002, alloys stock on 2003 models)...well, those are the big ones I remember off the top of my head.

Corollas are nice, but I think the pedals are too close (the controls feel too far away, including the steering wheel, when I have the seat adjusted so I'm comfortable with the pedals). I think it's designed for drivers in the low to mid 5-foot height range, as my wife thinks it's fine. The rear seats are actually usable now, although the rear seatbacks don't recline very much (about 30 degrees up from horizontal when fully folded), so it kind of limits what you can load through the trunk pass-through. The interior materials are very nice, although I hate the fake wood trim they put in some models. It's tall, which is great for headroom. Handling is OK, but soft and tippy for me. Straight-line acceleration is better than the Pro's, although it won't keep up with a Pro through corners.

About the only thing negative I hear about the Protege is the ride is stiffer than some of its competitors. However, its handling more than makes up for it (for me).

The only car, whose handling I hear compares to the Pro is the Focus (they think it handles as well, with less transfer of impact). I, however, think it's too "tippy" in corners, which I suspect is due to the softer-sprung and dampened suspension that creates the softer impacts. Just drive them all and judge for yourself.

I personally would still avoid Fords given their spotty reliability record (and now my friend's Windstar's brakes are acting up...apparently the mechanics at his dealership think it's OK for the brake pedal to just go to the floor w/o any braking as "it happens from time to time" with their ABS systems...eek, I'd dump the van immediately if it were mine...of course, I wouldn't have gotten one in the first place).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
If you only wanna spend $15K and want the most handling, room, and reliablility for the price, you are definitely in the right place. The Impreza will cost more than $15K and not handle as well. The Sentra will be about the same, but the interior room (front and rear) sucks. The Stratus/Sebring? Well, I don't know. I wouldn't have a Chrysler if I was given a different one for every day of the week to drive. They do not hold up well though, from experience through friends.

The Protege is gonna give you the best combination of everything. The only negative aspect is resale value, so keep this in mind if you trade cars quickly. Of course, resale value is a little low on any small car, so I would have to call the Protege average even in that respect. Definitely would recommend it if you want a fun-to-drive small car. The power is not spectacular, but it's adequate. Fuel economy is average or a little better as well.

And $15K should get you an ES model with pretty much everything, as rebates run pretty rampant on this vehicle.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to get. :)

I went to this comic book show/sale with a friend of mine on Sunday. They had a display about the world series or something, and a rally monkey hanging on the rack next to it! I busted out laughing, because I thought about Todd saying a couple of weeks ago how he ran over one, and did it void his warranty. :) I had never seen one before Sunday, because I didn't watch the final games. Too funny though. :)
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Those are tough little buggers. They took care of the Yankees, Twins, and Giants. Even after I sent one flying 50 feet after I nailed it with my Protege, it got right back up, started banging those inflatable Rally Sticks (or whatever they're called) together, and screamed like a monkey on crank. I tell ya, those California raised monkeys are something else.

Good sites: edmunds & cars.com (and check out the frequency of repair info, in the latest annual, auto review, issue of Consumer Reports. The Pro ranks up there with Accord & Camry.)
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
to the sound of my ES going over Highway expansion joints. I even switch off my excellent stereo just to hear the clippity-clop....makes me feel as if I were riding a horse....firm ride alongwith the right sound effects!!!
(and no vibrations or rattles to accompany after 44,000 miles, 3.5yrs)

Is anyone in the same boat like me?
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
but i am deaf from the loud exhaust of my mazdaspeed muffler at highway speed... ;)
  • dsm6dsm6 Member Posts: 813
My horse is more comfortable than my Protege. ;-)

    Better off road, too.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My best friend loves that sound as well. She associates the sound the same way you do, the horse walking with shoes on. She turns the radio off to listen to it sometimes, or I will use the steering wheel controls to turn the radio down just to make her laugh when she hears it. :0
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You still not liking the sound of that loud exhaust? What about some extra insulation back there?

Is it THAT much louder than the standard exhaust?

I'm going to the dealer today, gonna look around maybe even test drive some. I did some research and I think I want a protege mp3, assuming I can find one used somehow for under 15k. How slim are my chances on that one, and whats the main differences between it and an ex?
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
One big difference is cost of insurance.
  • ajil112ajil112 Member Posts: 9
Being a 21 year old male, insurance can really add up for me. I did some searching today, and found a mp3 with 20k miles for 15k; only 300 miles from my house! I'm gonna go check out the es; and if I like it, I might make the trip up to buy the mp3. Assuming my insurance man doesn't tell me its gonna be significantly more a month.
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
Check with insurance agent before buying - smart. Having car checked by mechanic before purchase - also smart.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My insurance on the ES when I had it (2001) was not significantly cheaper than on my 2002 turbo Jetta. I live in Baltimore, MD and have one point for speeding on my record too.
  • boggseboggse Member Posts: 1,048
I can't believe you were caught speeding? Was it in the Protege or the Jetta?
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
You mean that pleading/begging/crying doesn't work any more?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have been caught speeding 3 times. Once in my mom's 94 Bonneville (that was in 97), once in the Protege DX (where the point came from), and once in the ES.

I got one point after going to court to fight the ticket. In the ES, I got a ticket with 2 points and just paid it. The points never showed on my insurance yet though.\

Never got a ticket in the Jetta yet, had it a year this coming Sunday. Surprising, because it's the most powerful car I ever had and I NEVER go below 80mph on the highway with it.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Went to my dealer today and asked for that 48.000 kms svc. $364+taxes. Yikes!

So I explained him I just want:

oil change + filter (it's due anyway) $26.95
    spark plug replacement $59.99
    Coolant flush $79.00
A/T drain, clean oil pan and refill $79.99

Total: $246+taxes=$282.90 NOT NEGOTIABLE since he agreed not to check the rest of the items (lubricate doors, tightening bolts, brake inspection, check lights, BS like that).

Ticked me off with the price for changing the spark plugs, but if they seize and break, I can say bye-bye to any type of X-mas holiday, so I'd rather get them done this way. I replaced the air filter 2 weeks ago and got wipers 4-6 weeks ago, so it's all good.

PRO's driving VERY fine, although I almost ran out of gas today. The light went on yesterday, but from previous occasions I know I still have left 100 city kms to drive before it's empty, so at 40kms today I filled up 52L with only 3 litres remaining in the tank! Close call. It was also the most expensive fill-up ever > $38 @ 74.5 cents/litre. I never put more than $34 before and that was when gas was $0.78/l.

  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
YIKES! Almost $3 a gallon for gas in Canada? Whew, and I complain about paying 149.9 a gallon here.... :(

The maintenance schedule in my owner's manual (for 2002 Protege LX) does not call for replacement of AT fluid up through 96,000 kms (and that is for Schedule B-Severe Service). Where have you been told otherwise?
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I haven't. I want to do a tranny oil change. The maintenance also doesn't call for a coolant flush until 96.000kms - 60.000 miles - but I just don't believe in that.

The maintenance menu calls for a coolant "check" not change at 48.000kms. I have 46.500 kms now in 15 mths! That a lot of driving, under extreme conditions - really hot in the summer and as of last week, really cold now. It might snow on Saturday...

I plan on keeping this Protege - along with a 2nd one I'll be getting next year for at least 8-10 yrs. I MUST maintain it accordingly.

I don't mind taking care of this car - I LOVE IT and I'm keeping it for longer than most people! If it was leased, I wouldn't care one bit, but it isn't.

I just finished reading the econosports comparison edmunds did. The protege handles well, but is lacking in power. The vast majority of my driving is done on the interstate at above 75 mph. Handling doesn't really come into play too much on the interstate but power does. This is a big mark against the pro. That being said, the sentra se-r and spec v didnt get produced until 2002, so I might not be able to fit them into my price range. Why oh why does the mp3 only have 140 horses? Thats what my 93 accord had, and it didnt get up and go like I wanted it to. I like the subaru's styling better than the sentra, maybe I'll get one of those. I can always add the 17" rims later on. The sebring is starting to look more viable, but that 36k warranty stinks.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
So you openly admit to driving like a maniac? Well, maybe you need an '87 Camaro or something like that. For those of us living in states with speed limits, the Protege does just fine.

Having said that, I'll tell you I've had my '00 ES 5-speed up to and over 105 mph on occasion. Runs pretty well there.

BTW, what is the highway speed limit where you live?
