A different key didn't help in mine, the lock lube stuff did.

Also, my best friend and my dad are both locksmiths. So I know a thing or two about locks.
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
you stated it as fact to Meade that it was the lock not the key. Not having seen the lock or the key or tried it yourself, you have no way of knowing it is in fact the lock.

My example shows that it is in fact possible that the key is the culprit.

And one of my best friends is a heart surgeon so I guess by your association, I could give advice on heart surgery.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Alright, from my experience it was the lock and not the key. I should have said it's more than likely the lock.

And I was just trying to help, sorry for trying to be nice.

is 4/50. Edmunds must have a misprint; nothing new.
  • boggseboggse Member Posts: 1,048
It took me 2.25 hours to go the 7 miles from work to home. Apparently all of the businesses in RTP closed simultaneously. On top of that, my super secret short cut was closed due to railroad crossing construction. AAARRRGGHH!!

On the plus side, with my Cherokee in 4WD, I didn't slip at all. I was shocked and horrified to see a Toyota Sienna minivan slide off the road. It was sitting stationary, and, when he was finally able to inch forward, the van just slid onto the shoulder.

Yep two kinds of people. Sheesh, took long enough getting to the end of the posts - 69 of them.

Dinu1, you will laugh at this, 143 wrecks this afternoon in Winston-Salem and only 2cm of snow. Nothing is moving. Streets are empty.

I'm posting some pics on the other board showing details of the new car. Meade, thanks for using my hot blue P5 pic.

    HA HA!

Well there were a lot of crashes when we got hit the first time a few weeks go. If you remember I posted about a guy in a BMW that almost did a 180 in front of me.

But just 2cms? As Meade would say "Sheesh!".

Well Happy B-Day and all my best wishes!

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. AKA, North Carolina's largest parking lot when it snows, sleets, freezing rains, etc.

I have read that deicers work by turning the layer of ice next to the pavement into water. Once the layer next to the surface is melted, mechanical removal of the ice is easier. Deicers should best be used along with mechanical removal, not in place of removal. If you try to melt all the snow and ice with deicers you will probably apply more deicer than is necessary and increase the risk of environmental damage.

Deicers are applied before snowfall to prevent snow and ice from bonding to the road surface. It is easier to prevent a bond from forming than to break a bond. When applied before snowfall deicers will require lower application rates than if used to deice afterwards.

    Dale and dinu1. :D

N orth Carolina has two areas where cities are very close to each other, the RTP and the Triad in the Western part of the state. Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point make up the Triad. RTP is Raleigh-Durham and NC's version of Silicone Valley.

If you had a 4X4 tonight one could drive anywhere and not see another vehicle on the road -- it is SO quiet out there.

Not a good time to buy a Protegé.

    Hello,

What mileage #'s are people seeing for 2002 Pro ES with 5 speed? I do a 50/50 mix and I see about 23. It seems low to me.

    Thoughts?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Do you drive the car hard? Just wondering. I had a 2001 ES automatic and used to get 24, but I was a hard driver on it.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
And thanks to Dale for being so conscientious about this. :)
  • dsm6dsm6 Member Posts: 813
    I too have an 02 ES 5 speed. With about 65/35 hwy/city I average about 33 mpg.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't think too many people recognize "RTP". Maybe NYC, LA, CHI, or even Mpls, but I've never heard of RTP.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
I can't claim credit for being conscientious this time around.

I was lurking in the 6 discussion and became aware that yesterday was Jim's birthday.

But you can bet it's on my calendar now!

    :)

Oh, yeah....um....boy, am I glad my Protege has started every day since the weather has gotten so cold.

How many miles per 14.5 gal tank. I am in the 300 range to fill up with 12.5+ gallons. I am not a hard driver with 2 kids in the back......

Thanks for the responses. Any ideas? worth talking to the dealer?

    Mazdafun and Protege_fan! :)

I think all of us are lurking and posting on the Mazda6 board. If not min the market for one of those beauties, it at least gives us some idea of what they next Pro might be like. And pictures of the next Miata and RX-8 are also goood ideas of future styling for the Pro. Will it be a baby 6 or a four door Miata scaled up? Time will tell.

The back looks a lot like the back of the RX-8. different but good, IMO.

I used to but I haven't been in about 3 years. Who knows, I might start getting up that way in the not too distant future...keep your fingers crossed next Tuesday.

DTW is actually a nice facility with the new terminals. IMO. Not at all like 3 years ago. Almost, shall we say, something to look forward to?

    Mark.

Keep my fingers crossed next Tuesday? For what?

I got my car back from the body shop. Looks nice. I noticed they had to "adjust" the radiator support. That seems strange because I barely hit the deer and there was no bumper cover or bumper damage. I guess it doesn't take much, these cars are designed to crumple. I'm glad to have it back though. The engine is so smooth compared to the 2.0L non-zetec in the Focus. No wonder Ford wants Mazda designing the small 4 cylinder engines. OK, time to go put the winter tires on before it gets any colder tonight. It's 20 degrees and dropping.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
    opportunities.

The hood latches to the radiator support so when the deer landed on the hood, it probably pushed it down a little...no biggie.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
    opportunities. hmmm....

Well, my dang rear wheels won't come off. I sprayed some WD40 into the little space between the wheel and the hub and I'm going to wait. I tried punching the tires (I don't have a rubber mallet) but I'm affraid I might damage suspension components if I keep doing it. Any ideas?
  • fowler3fowler3 Member Posts: 1,919
The back of the RX-8? Hmmm. The head honcho at Mazda said it would be unlike "anything you have seen before." Hope that bodes well for Protegés.

Anybody chatting tonight? I will after TAKEN. Cool sci-fi epic.

fowler3 loves UFOs since he saw two of them in 1952 in the sky. No lights, just the objects. Clear blue sky, no clouds, no weather balloons, no aircraft. Extremely fast! The reason people buy silver cars is because silver is the color of machines, and that may explain why UFOs are silver. They aren't illusions and halucinations which can be any color.

I actually laid down underneath the back of the car and gave a couple swift kicks to the rear wheels from the inside. It's kinda uncomfortable laying underneath a jacked car and kicking it, but I was sick of sitting outside and I wanted to get it over with. Oh well, it's done and the car didn't fall on me. I know, I'm an idiot. Now bring on the friggin' snow.

I typically re-fuel around 400+ mi and put in around 12-12.5 gallons. P5 folks talk from time to time about poor fuel efficiency. I would talk to the dealer, but I'd expect to get brushed off.

How many miles on the car? Mine has 23,000, so it is well broken in which improves fuel efficiency a small bit. Are you in California? Cali-gas is good for a few fewer miles per gallon. You know how Cali likes to the lead the way on such things. ;-)

Although I anticipate an assertive "KEEP UP!!!" admonishment from you, I honestly don't remember if we've ever discussed the following or not.

I noticed in the Photos section "over there" that you have a band of blue sun tinting along the top of your windshield. That's the first Protege I've ever seen with a tinted windshield. Is that a stock windshield or did you add the tinting yourself?

(Again, apologies if this was discussed over a weekend sometime -- often I don't go back and wade through everything that happened since I left Friday afternoon.)

Dale's windshield was replaced at the dealership when they broke it when leaving the wipers up and putting the hood up at the same time, remember?

    Keep up! :) (just kidding)

How did you fare in the snow yesterday?
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I know that. But if the windshield was replaced at the dealership, why didn't they use a stock Mazda windshield?

P.S. Larry, did they open a Cracker Barrel in Vatican City?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I, for some reason, thought that my 01 had a tint band up top. But I forgot, I had the windows tinted and they added one.

I had the windshield replaced in the 99 DX, and it was the same without the band at the top. Also, dealerships don't replace windshields anyway, I was told they send their glass work out. So there's really no such thing as an OEM replacement windshield, I would assume from that statement.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Forgot to ask, how did your Protege make it through all that snow and ice with its new tires? You said you would tell us... :)
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
I have no idea why I got a tinted windshield.

Yes, the repair was done at the dealership, but it was done by an outside contractor...Gary the Glass Guy or somebody came in to do the replacement.

And I wish Gary had done a better job--let's just say I don't need to roll down my windows to get fresh air.
