are you guys talking about the new 5 spoke design? I think they look pretty similar to the previous 5 spoke design, and i havent seen any 03s with more than 5 spokes.. am i missing someting?
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
01-02 v. 03s, even if they were unidirectional (looked like they were backwards on one side of the car).

Each spoke on the 03 alloys has too many styling lines for my taste. I prefer smooth and clean with some curvaceous shape for excitement. All those lines just clutter-up the look.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
they have both new 15" alloys for the LX's and 16" alloys for ES/P5.

I could care less about the new 15" ones, but I think the 16" ones are actually nice, very clean looking.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I only saw the 15s on an LX model on the lot. They were hideous to me.

I saw a P5 on the showroom floor, and it had the same wheels as the "refresh" 2002 models had...
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
are carried over as standard 16's for 2003

    hence the 'refresh' ;-)

so we are just bashing the new 15" alloys, and leaving the 16s alone right? because the 16s are nice looking IMO ;-)
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Last Friday when I saw the first 6 parked at a dealer, I also saw this Protege. It was an 03 model (has side blinkers), blue (NOT MP3 - no wing or spoiler at the back, or MP3 badge) and it has really ugly wheels.

I tried looking for a pic, but all I find are pics of the 02 16" wheels which I like.

  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
Yeah, the 15's are hideous. The 16 refresh weren't bad, but I still like my pre-refresh wheels much better.

That extra line in the refresh 16's is just another place to trap dirt and make it harder to clean.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Along those lines, I have one personal criticism about my wife's P5 -- the back bumper has a freakin' slot running crosswise for about four feet across the rear bumper -- just a *wee* bit too small for my finger to run through with the rag -- and when it gets full of black dirt, that white bumper looks bad! So now, in addition to the washing and drying rags, bucket, car soap, tire cleaner, tire shine, window cleaner and a few other odds and ends, all of which I keep in a nice, convenient spot in my shed, I now have to run upstairs and grab a few freakin' Q-TIPS when I go out to wash the cars!!!

To make matters even more of a challenge, the car's white -- REALLY white -- and when that Meguiar's Gold Class dries to a nice WHITE, you really have to squint your eyes and try and catch reflections to find where you haven't waxed and where you haven't buffed!

The P5 is definitely harder to wash than my Protege. More creases in the hood, the roof rack, that area under the top-of-the-window rear spoiler, the area under the hatch, the aforementioned rear bumper, and not to mention the seeming hours I have to spend getting into all the acute angles and niches around her headlights and (especially) those driving lights! Thank goodness for a paved driveway now -- that railroad-grade gravel was killing me!!!

There. 'Nuff complaining for now. I've been sick. Gimme a break. Now back to dreaming about what the Mazda3 will look like since Maltb's too chicken to post the pics.

Hey Malt, why don't you e-mail them to me, and then I'LL post them -- and since I used to be a newspaper reporter, I'll grant you "off-the-record," "deep background" status and never reveal my source?

go to mazdausa's site, they have both the new 15" and the 16" wheels pictures there.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You know the laser blue from the MP3 is available on all Protege models now, right? I love that color, I am glad it's finally available.

I wonder why they change designs of wheels like that periodically? I guess they do so to be able to say that something's new for a new model year.

BTW, I saw the 6 with wheel covers. They look kinda like the Protege's (from the DX), but with a little different design.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
... to keep the current model 'fresh' so people won't be like, 'well I'll just get a used one from last year, since there's no difference from this year's model'

notice how every year during the lifetime of the 3rd gen Protege, there's something different from one year to the next, even though they're 'technically' the same car...
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Yeah, they're all pretty much the same, but the changes made to the 2001 were pretty substantial. So I'd say the 99-00s are very similiar, and the 01-03s are very similiar. I personally like the 01-02 16 inch wheels the best. They look most like the 17s that come on the Mazda6, only a little smaller.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I've seen the silver ES in the "Gallery" tab and those alloys are ok. I don't know, maybe the dealer "customized" that PRO, but the alloys looked terrible.

Jim: The pic you sent me > Those wheels won;t win any beauty pageants, but they're still not as bad as what I've seen.

I'll confirm what's going on in 2 weeks when I'll go drive the 6.

about the A cars (the competitor we aren't suppose to mention here), the first two years the backup lamps are above the brake lamps, the next two years they are below them. Turning taillamps upside down is "new"? Sheesh.

BTW I posted a Laser Blue Pro pic in my album showing those ugly wheels, with a Lapis Blue 6 behind it for comparison.

The spokes are too SKINNY, too many creases, they look like a PepBoys special buy on sale for $39.95 each.

I linked the picture Jim took of the ugly rims

yes these are the new 15" rims, and I agree they look bad :-(
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
    I hate the pinstriping. Ugh.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Pin striping is pretty bad. I took mine off my 01 Pro when I got it, and my 99 didn't have it.

Just wanted to let you all know this. Mine is a 2000 LX auto and had the Check Engine Light for the past few days.

Took it in to the dealer today. Know what - the sensor is knocked out. Go it replaced under warranty. I did get a letter from Mazda way back in feb '02 informing me of this issue and asking me to go to the dealer ONLY if there was a problem.

I don't know if it is just my imagination, but I feel the pick-up is now smoother than before. I mean there was a smoother shift between the first and second gears. Let me confirm this after some more driving.

Coming to the rims, I saw the new 5 spoke Pro wheels with "pinstriping". Didn't like them. The old and plain ones were much better. Incidentally, I saw total 4 types of rims for the 6. One was the regular cap (bland). Alloys - One was the pinstriped ugly thing. One was plain & straight 5 spoke. but the best looking was the 5 (or 6?) curved spoke wheels.

Just curious to know how far anyone has driven with the empty gas light on?

I've once drive 30km on a road trip with the light on before finding a gas station. I have also duplicated that feat within the city just for kicks (I've recently saw a re-run of that Seinfield epidsode if you are asking why). The light seems to come on near empty as a warning, but then goes away after driving about 8 km, then it comes back shortly after for good.

With the gas price rising, I'm just wondering how much we can literally squeeze out of a tank.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
At a hand car wash place. LOTS of water and SOAP!!! The PRO is like a shinny disco ball (there's a song by "Who da funk" called Shinny Disco Balls). Now on to observations:

The Good: I can see in my mirrors - the car was so dirty I could barely see. Also, the salt is gone.

The Bad: Noticed 2 spots (as big as a dot made by a ball-point pen) of RUST! Well probably just a rock chip that needs to be "treated".

When I bought the PRO I got it rust-proofed (considering how much the City of Toronto likes salt on their roads), and the warranty covers me for 12 years of ANY rust ANYWHERE on the car. So when I'll do the next oil change and drive the 6, they'll get to do something about that those rust chips.

Another not so small problem: I have rubber floor mats, underneath the Mazda carpet mats and the car's carpet under that (obviously). Well when I washed the car, I took out the rubber mats and the driver's side carpet was stiff as a surfboard (hey, we gotta keep it PG-13 here). The carpet under all that mess is now wet. I'll use some paper towels and try absorbing that water - not for another reason but it must be a mixture of water and SALT!

PS: All those "Dale at the car wash" jokes are coming back to haunt me :)
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I think it comes on when there's about 10L left. I drove 50-60kms since it came on and only had 3L of fuel left, so all I can say is don't push you luck like Kramer did.

I make a habit of going at most 50kms before refuelling. If you're outside of the city, refuel at the 1st station you see - you never know where the next one will be.

    Dinu
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
With all those mats the pedals probably get stuck!

and why did you decide to use the Dale School of Carwashing to soak you carpet?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
How did the floor carpeting get wet through 2 sets of floormats? I know what you mean, I have the same in my car. Rubber floormat, carpet mat from the factory, then the car's carpeting.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The farthest I drove with the gas light on in the Protege was about 15 miles I think. Never did conk out. I think there is a gallon or 2 left in the tank when that light comes on. It should say in the owner's manual though.

And the light goes off and on, depending on how the sensor "reads" the tank. I would assume accelerating and stopping would slosh the gas around and make the sensor go off sometimes.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I usually drive w/running shoes on (90% of the time since I can go to work w/out proper shoes and at school "who cares?") so since they are smaller than boots/shoes, and it does take a few days in the spring and fall getting used to the difference in height (1/2 of an inch I think) b/w two mats or just one. It's just a touch different - although if you go and drive with 2 sets of mats you'll feel awkward, but in a day or two you won't notice it anymore.

Now the water is from the snow and the very cold weather - the driver carpet mat just froze; the passenger and rear ones are like new. Guess melted snow went out of the rubber mats and underneath on the carpet ones. The driver carpet mat looks ok too, but it's frozen.

I need to take the PRO down south so it can all melt :)

    Coming up soon.

We never had any problems with our Protege. To stay on topic ya know.
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
    do you have Dinu.

Are they the ones that are supposed to trap water or are they just rubber mats.

I've though about spending the money for some of the ones that supposedly trap the water but wondered if they really work that well.

Something like this is what I mean..

I thought going 30km with the light on was stretching it. But 50-60km?? wow, that's ballsy! I've got to give you props for that. I don't think I'd ever get the guts to squeeze out that much fuel.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
I pushed it too far in my 323. The engine stopped while I was waiting for a red light on an incline. I'd gone about 15 miles after the light had come on.

Luckily for me, I was able to shift into N and coast backwards (nobody was behind me) into a fuel station and up to a fuel pump.

While driving though NJ on the NJ Turnpike, heading into NYC, the light also came on. I managed to move about 6 miles in rush-hour traffic to the first fuel station I could find. I think I would've been OK for a while yet as this terrain was flat.

They are black $15 CAD mats from Walmart for the front and $5 CAD for the rear. They were all rite, till now.

I now never go to the light before filling up. I had been on a trip once, driving the turnpike. Didn't want to stop so just kept pushing past each rest area. Finally, light has been on, guage has been all the way down, and I figure I can't go any further. Pull in to rest area and bam.....everything is down, can't get any gas. So I pull back out and sweat the next 45 miles to the next rest area.
That experience scared me to death so I just don't push anymore.

My 2nd reason kind of goes back to the "be prepared" thing we debated about spare tires the other day. I have this fear that I'll get a call to the hospital in the middle of the night, go out and not have any gas, so I have to stop and get some and miss getting there by 1 minute.

    So gas wimp I am........
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
First you mock me for saying "be prepared" and now you're abiding my it? Haha!

I don't like having an empty tank, especially in the winter. If you happen to run out whilst in the middle of nowhere, you'd probably freeze to death!

And to be somewhat on topic, I FINALLY got to wash my Pro last night. I feel so bad...I hadn't washed my Pro in more than a month! Ah well...it's relatively nice weather out and I'd almost forgotten how great the black mica looks!

I just posted 2 links showing the Mazda3 on the Mazda3 (sedan) board.

To those who have seen it, mainly maltb and groovy, can you confirm its authenticity?
  • groovypippingroovypippin Member Posts: 264
Like I just posted on the Mazda3 board, I can't authenticate the rear view shot because I haven't seen a picture from that angle but the front end shot is authentic.

That's the car boys and girls.

Anyone know much about this engine in the 2002 Pro? Although my Pro handles like a sports car I am less than impressed with the 2 litre engine. 1. It"s buzzy at high RPM ( not a major problem) 2. Knocking when engine is cold ( not a major problem - high test gas solves it ) 3. Flat spot in 2nd gear when RPM's are low - again premium gas helps . 4 BIGGEST concern - engine vibration at all RPM's that I can feel in the steering wheel , the gearshift ( and enterior trim vibrates) . Worst when accelaerating and in colder weather. Dealer says this is normal - I had a 1992 Pro( 1.8 liter ) that never had these problems . Anyone out there with the same problems?
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
The Protege doesn't like cold. My engine is kinda loud when its cold, but when it warms up it smoothes out. You will feel engine vibrations through the shifter because it has a rod-linkage, not a cable linkage. I don't feel excessive engine vibration through my steering wheel though, so you might wanna get that checked out.

Clint, if that is the next generation Protog FORGET-ABOUT-IT!!! Not very dignified looking. However, thats just my opinion.

    -Larry
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
    1. It"s buzzy at high RPM: Driving with the stereo off on the highway is not recommended. Turn it up and the engine will be as quiet as a Buick on a Sunday drive.

    2. Knocking when engine is cold (not a major problem - high test gas solves it): I ALWAYS use 87 regular. This is VERY common on most 2.0 Mazda engines and can easily be solved: drive the car 3 minutes and it all goes away. At least for me it does, so I take it easy. Let the car warm-up while driving (MUCH better than when idle) and when the temp needle is halfway (where it should be), it's time to zoom.

    3. Flat spot in 2nd gear when RPM's are low - again premium gas helps: Have not experienced this. Mine is AT.

4 BIGGEST concern - engine vibration at all RPM's that I can feel in the steering wheel , the gearshift ( and interior trim vibrates): This is NOT normal by any means. My car does not shake or vibrate even when it was -20C outside 2 weeks ago. This is NOT what a new car does!

Worst when accelerating and in colder weather: That is fine. You just have to drie it a few minutes and it will let go. Now I know MT cars might also take a few minutes for the gears to go in properly if it's too cold.

    Other comments:

My 01 PRO 2.0 ES with AT did the same thing for a few good months since I bought it (knocking noises). Now, 18 mths later and 51.251kms later, the noise has gone away (I did not have this issue since last spring - 2002). It does take a long time for the AT to switch gears when it's cold, but after 3 minutes of city traffic and a few shifts, the trany loosens up (when the temperature needle is at 1/2) and the car can be driven again. Friday and Saturday when we had above-freezing weather, the car started and acted like it does in the summer - no issues whatsoever.

In what city are you? What dealer did you take it to if in Toronto?

    Dinu
  • george2002george2002 Member Posts: 13
Thanks for the feedback . I'm nearer to Ottawa than Toronto and it is colder up here so perhaps that's why I'm having more cold weather problems. Anyhow I'm relieved that there doesn't seem to be a flood of complaints about the engine vibrations. If it's just mine , maybe they will find the problem and correct it. If everyone was complaining about it , I'd suspect an engineering/design flaw that might never be fixed. And some day I hope to consider the Mazdaspeed 2004!(which will use the same 2 litre I believe)
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
It says so on the front license plate. Nice interior in that Mazda2 BTW. The rear seats slide fore and aft a total of 10cm as well as tilt and all four seats fold flat to form a double bed (for those who like camping in their cars...or for really long road trips for those who don't want to pay for lodging).

I don't know if Mazda NA plans on bringing the Mazda2 here. Doubt it. Too bad. Interesting vehicle (though not for me...the rear is a bit too upright for my taste).

So far as the Mazda3, I like the front half. The rear half needs more work. It looks too much like a Focus ZX5, which I don't like, especially the humungous D pillar. If they make the P5 replacement look more like a mini Mazda6, I'd be all over it. I hope the pics are of a 5dr hatchback, but it looks destined to be a P5 replacement.

The curving top line of the doors doesn't bode well for fitting my bike rack on top. It prefers a straighter line.

At least it has adjustable headrests in the rear, folding mirrors (looks like them to me) and big brake rotors (discs all around). Nice high roof in the front seats, not sure about the back...the car has one of those sloping rooflines. I hate those. I think it looks wimpy, and it takes away rear headroom.

I'm ambivalent on the design. I kinda like the current P5 more. At least it looks better than the 2004 Focus. What I saw looks too sharp and chunky (like the new Cadillacs) and its front end closely resembles a Saturn L-Series (ugly IMO).
  • theparallaxtheparallax Member Posts: 361
I like the way it looks for the most part, but it needs to be more agressive IMO. Keep in mind that these pics aren't official yet.

I think I've stuck with the OEM wiper blades long enough to grant a replacement. I remember Meade and Raymond replaced their with something called Siliblade and have great experiences with them. Where can I find these blades? Can I find them at my local retail auto parts store or do I have to order them online???
