Don't wanna run a locker with two different sized rear tires, in fact its bad for any dif for long.

Get a spare the same sized ASAP.

Also, do the "chalk test" on your wide tire/narrow wheel combo. You'll be forking out for new wheels soon, as you probably have to drop the pressure to about 20 psi in order to wear the entire width of the 285 tire uniformly....

Chalk test - draw a line across the width of the tire. Drive down the block without turning, look for the chalk to be uniformly worn. If worn in the middle only, tires too inflated or tire too balloon shaped as the wheels are too narrow.

I know i am trying to find a rim for a spare.

The tires are fine they dont buldge out or anything. Ill try that test and see what it yields.

    This is a test...

OK - the test does not work. What I would like to do is post a picture of my truck to this site. How do I specify a path to the .jpg on my local machine or file server such that it shows on this website? Or do I have to store the image somewhere on the Edmunds.com site and reference it via the above code in the body of the message?

    Thanks for any help!

I want to put a hood guard on my 2000 silverado.
I was thinking of a Lund Intercepter or Trident.
Any pros or cons with these or any other suggestions?
    Also best place to buy.

    Thanks,

great pics in post #711. looks like you guys had a good time. i'd have to say you described it aptly...beautifully desolate.

lemme reopen this line of discussion now. "old-man" looking or not...who on here likes what kinds of bed caps and why? leer, are, leonard, etc... i'm looking to either buy (if the price is right) or at the very least rent for when i move in may. anyone have any ideas where i can rent one (by the week for example)?

Are you going to get a trailer? You have a tow pkg right? Uhaul box trailer would work for you wouldnt it?

they have to be on web space somewhere...like picture trail as babs mentioned...or most ISP's provide 5-10 meg of web space for free with your service...you need a program to transfer them there..and then post a link or HTML code to show it...

    pretty simple

Good Luck on this one now

Is anyone driving a new Silverado 2500 HD with the NEW 8.1 Vortec. What kind of mileage are you
getting? Loaded and empty. What axle ratio 3.73 or 4.11? On paper they should just idle with no load. I know I'm dreaming, but with all the new changes I wonder. Thanks for any response.

Where did you get the backup lights. I am thinking about adding to mine when it gets here. I really like the idea of being able to see the mailbox I am about to back over.

I moved my daughter to Nashville for a 5 month internship. I rented a 5x8' enclosed UHaul trailer - 900# empty and probably 1600 - 1800# loaded. Also had about 550# of people in the cab. Memphis to Nashville gains a fair altitude.

Took I40 all the way, mostly at 75mph. My Sierra handled it easily with little loss in performance. I did not use tow/haul. It didn't seem to be necessary. Stayed in OD except on long hills. I let it downshift to maintain speed (cruise) rather than letting speed decay going up the hills. Fuel consumption was high - 11 mpg going and 13.4 returning.

I'll find out in May whether the difference was gaining/losing altitude or the reduction in weight on the return.

    2k Sierra Ext cab1500, 5.3l, 3.73 rear locker, auto.

When I purchased a cap, I looked at the different types of locks on the door. Most new caps have dual locks, one on each side. How inconvient, especelly in the winter. I bought a Glasstite cap that has a frame less door with one push-button lock in the center. The push-button releases the two catches, similar to the trucks door latch. This makes it easy to open, one lock, push the button. To close, just lightly slam it closed. The Glasstite is also a one piece cap. On most caps, a aluminum or wooden frame is screwed on. My old Leer was like that. After 10 yrs, the screws were coming out. The Glasstite fits well, and the color match was exact. I have the peweter. Glasstite called me to find out where my truck was built, as the two plants paint is slightly different. I bought the Targa Sport model.

What's this about a rim for a spare? Didn't the truck come with one?

    Carl,
I would expect around 11-12. We took my dad's truck up to Oregon a few weeks ago, '99 454, and averaged around 11.5 mpg on Interstate 5. When we tow the rv, we get around 8.

In case you didnt know i changed tire sizes. I am running an LT285 now. Its not a wise idea to run a 265 spare with a 285 tire.

I am doing a hunt for a spare rim so far only have steel wheels and they are running $75 (plus a nice discount cause my mom works at the place). I am trying to get the chrome SS or like the rim i already have. Kinda tough though.

As for Ryans tires, you sound jealous, they are quite adequate for his truck (or for that matter any 3/4 ton truck) they are rated at 3305lbs at 65psi per tire, 13320 lbs total (BFG TKO LT 285/65/16D) Just for a side note, the BFG TKO in a LT 245/75/16E is only rated at 3042 lbs per tire, obviously less, my guess is the Steeltex is also 3042 lbs per tire as I have seen many other "e" rated tires at that same spec, which means Ryan has more carrying capacity going by tire specs than you do! I have not ever seen specs on the Steeltex, i have looked for them since I wanted to compare them. I Have had BFG's in the past on all my other trucks, and needless to say was extremely pleased with the wear, traction (wet, snow and mud) and the overall wear characteristics of the tire. I can not say that about my Steeltex's on my '00 ¾ ton, infact I would say that these tires completely suck compared to the BFG's, they suck on wet roads (especially seam sealer on the road) they suck in the snow ( I have needed 4wd to get in my level driveway, which was no problem with my old truck) and they wear terrible, I have 18000 on them, granted they are wearing more evenly then my BFG's did, they are wearing more rapidly, I would say they are at least half gone. I was getting 40000-45000 out of my BFG's, and doing more towing with them than I have with this truck on the Steeltex's. The only other advantage of the Steeltex is they are a little quiter ride, who cares. Had I been able to get these tires bought back by Firestone I would have in a minute, and bought BFG's.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
These new bfgs are great in the snow and on wet roads

Yep it is 3305 i checked when i went for gas tonight.

12.5mpg again no decline with the larger tires actually went up .2mpg

    Ryan
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
..but I'm pretty sure it's 3400 for the Steeltex...

I told Ryan his tires looked good.....jealous?...uhhhh....you couldn't be any more to the left of center on that one..

OK...let's test them out....stick 3300 lbs in his and 3400 in mine....let's see which holds out better!

    LOL

Thanks for sharing the great photos. Your truck looks sharp with the new tires and wheels. How is your radio? (For info, Vince and I had previous problems with the radio)
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
oby, I don't know what type of balancer they used. I'll ask when I go back to get the banging weights fixed. Everyone with 2500s watch out, the front calipers don't leave much room for weights on after market wheels. Of course you disadvantaged 1/2 ton owners don't need to worry about such things as large brakes. Ha!

Tim, the Steeltex E tire is 3042 lbs @ 80 psi. I was worried about going down to a D rating until I learned that the extra width means you can still handle the same weight at a lower psi. The E rating means they can handle 80 psi, and the 80 psi means they can handle the weight.

I looked and never found a 265/75/16 E rated tire other than Firestone, and never found any wider E tire at all.

The 6.0 is a great engine. Of course it has more power than the 5.3, but you do give up some mpg. The 5.3 is a pretty impressive trade-off between the two. For your application don't even think about the smaller engine. You need a 3/4 ton truck anyway. The 6.0 would pull your 5th wheel just fine but obviously not as easily as the 8.1. I bet the 8.1 doesn't get much worse mileage while towing. You should check out Trailer Life magazine for good real-life towing information.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
I bought the backup lights at Kragen. They were sold as such. About $35 I think.

tex, the 3rd radio did the trick. No problems except I'm beginning to want a little more power. These radios have a most interesting form of distortion when pushed, it almost sounds like a digital sampling error but I doubt that. Anyway I'm happy with the system after replacing the rear speakers and installing a Bazooka tube.

Tim - Could you give me little more detail on how GM issues that certificate (Is it called a certificate?) You wouldn't have a copy of it you could Fax to me?? Fax 641-754-2731 Loren Bovee if possible.

Did the Dealer know about it ahead of truck delivery and notify you or did it come to you in the mail direct from GM without dealer knowing about it?? or did the dealer iniciate the request?

Is it a paper certificate etc or come thru to the dealer from GM with the PU invoice billing etc.?

Do you think there was any SPECIFIC long delivery parameters before GM would issue this?

This would give me a better understanding on who to request this thru.

    Thanks - 75v

I sent the pictures as an attachment. Could you save them to your 'c' drive and then pull them out for whatever process you need to post them? I will try to see if we have another method of sending them as a file. And in the mean time, I will resend them. Maybe there is a glitch in our e-mail system.

The basic cap cost $1165 plus tax. I added the interior headliner, and a 12 volt dome light. ARE needs your VIN # to match the color.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Ok first off Nick i am trying to match the 4 rims on my truck with a new spare. I heard maybe im wrong that the alum wheels are 16x7 and steel (spare) is 16x6.5

Rand i dont know why it didnt work i emailed them to scooter to work on. Ill give it another go around later on

You said they can match the color to your vin? Ok i am PISSED now. They are replacing a latch on my tailgate and 2 wks ago i left and when i went in friday she said we didnt get your paint code i said it should be in the VIN and its 39U and she said its a longer number than that. Where on my truck is the paint code? In the vin correct. Dumb *&#^&*%#(# Shes like oh no blah blah blah. So now i have been waiting damn near 6 wks for this part. Oh im gonna raise some heck today.

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
the fact one is 6.5 and the other is 7 don't matter...it's the 265 and 285 that is the problem..

and why raise heck?....I'd raise hell!

    LOL

thanks for the heads up on uhaul rental trailers...never seen one of those before. (j/k) anyways...yes, i've got the tow package, and with it, i plan on putting my wife's jimmy (unfortunately, it won't fit in the bed of my truck) on a dual axle trailer to tow when we move. which brings me back to the bed (which at this point will still be empty). so, that's why i asked about caps.

jkania and randersen - thanks for ya'll's input. i'm leaning really hard towards ARE. the center latch on the glasstite is not something i would have noticed before though. so, i'll check it out.

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Tim the 6.5 is the problem not wide enough. Oh yea i thought i would edit the heck part. Im pretty pissed for real though. That will be the 4th time i have been in for that part. First time to order it, second it wasnt in, third it was in they had to paint it, and the last it wasnt painted. Wonder if they painted it yesterday?

BCO i was just wondering if you planned on towing anything. Are you gonna load up the jimmy also when you tow that? You can fit some boxes back there.
  • quadcab4x4quadcab4x4 Member Posts: 44
That 6.5" wheel should work, 1/2" isn't going to make that much diff. Especially if it's a spare.. I wouldn't worry too much.
Remember it is only 1/4" on each side.

I've seen cases where people are running 16"x8" wheels with 35" tires. And that's with everyday use.

    Just don't run a 16.5" wheel with a 16" tire!
Now that I would worry about.
