Don't you recognize Engineering talk when you see it.... ;-)
I called today and found out they are on a truck and will be in tomorrow WOOHOO. Tomorrow tires and friday itll be in the damn shop all day
Ryan
Thanks,
Erik
If you have a 4x2, it is probably a good idea. More traction and you don't have 4x4 to go to.
If you have a 4x4, you probably do not need it. Most often you turn it to 4x4 when you need the traction. Most times you have all wheels with reasonably EQUAL traction. If you are in a VERY serious off-road condition, the locker might help.
In summation:
4x2 get a locker
4x4 you do not NEED it

2. Yes would buy again.
3. Would definitely stick with the Chevy HD,but I would probably look more seriously at the Duramax diesel with Allison trans as a definite. Maybe next time when the Duramax is better in availability. Due to garage length, the ext. cab short box works best for me, but would prefer a long box(extending the garage would be too expensive and I bought the truck more for boat trailer towing than hauling). If I had a big enough garage, dream truck would be a dually ext. cab or crew cab.
Question to HD owners, anyone find a bug deflector available for the HD trucks yet? My local truck accessory shops say they haven't found any available yet due to the different hood. Also, if you buy an HD and want step bars like the Westin's, make sure the accessory shops specify HD since the mounting is different than on the 2500 or 1500 Silverados.
Ryan, to each his own, but I always like raised whites on 1500's and blackwalls on 2500 and 3500's. Recently saw some guy with an F350 dually ext. cab 2wd diesel with WHITEWALLS. Looked like s**t. However, my buddy has a 4wd 1500 Suburban that came with blackwalls and just always looked like something was missing. He replaced the tires with raised whites(Dunlop Rovers) and that made the difference. If you went up to 285's, make sure the difference in tire size isn't enough to throw the computer off. I saw on 'shadetree mechanic' on TNN that they upsized a truck on tire and wheel size and had to put on an electronic box on the transmission to compensate for the difference.
Tomorrow my truck is going in "under the knife" so to speak. Steering shaft and tailgate. It worked out perfect i am also going to have them recalibrate the speedometer to read correct. Hopefully itll work and they will know how to do it.
I do have a question for you how are your roof lights??? DO they come on automatically or with a switch? I really like the look of them are they screwed into the roof?
GET SOME PICS Your truck sounds awesome
Thanks
Ryan

But when you get out in the rough stuff, the locker can save your bacon by letting the wheel with traction pull you over a boulder or dirt mound.
Admittedly, if you drive on relatively smooth surfaces, it doesn't do much - until the traction goes away.
But, seriously - what is it you don't like about the lockers?

However the truck has performed well other than the annoying squeaks and rattles.
2000 GMC X-Cab Z71 Light Pewter 5.3 L 3.73
2. I would probably look at the used market for a extend cab truck or maybe the Supercrew.
3. I opted out of the trailer package because I could get it cheaper elsewhere and opted out of the trans cooler and I don't pull much. Probably should have had the trailer package put on.
Ryan
i paid like 27 for mine plus tax and all that good stuff

To fix the problem I went to Lowes Hardware (formally Eagle Hardware) and found in their small misc. parts department some plastic clips that were almost exactly the same as the Lund clips only a bit larger. I had to file one side down just a little so that they would fit into the square holes on the hood. They worked great!!! Very tight fitting and no popping out!!
1000% better than the Lund clips. I think they are similar to the clips that go into your bumper so you can screw your license plate on.

That my only complaint on my truck. Only 2 screws? What about the other 2.
That was a stupid decision i think

If GM could consistently and continually build quality trucks like mine, I'd buy a fleet of them. Only question is....can they do it? Hell, even the day of the week that the truck is built on can impact its quality (mine was built on Wednesday December 6th). That is the problem you always face when you "mass produce" items....consistant quality.
From lessons learned, I'll never buy a new vehicle in its first or second year of production. I've always waited to buy until it the bugs have been worked out, for GM that's usually by its third year of production.
.....completely satisfied and one happy owner,

well....in all the places I have gone over 16 years in 4WD's....I haven't needed one yet....everyone mentions the 2 wheels up in the air opposite sides...but hasn't happened to me...
Sure it's extra traction....but if you don't need it..ever...why get a rear that requires more maint.?..and more to go wrong?
Now if I ever lived/worked on a farm...and had to go out in the Un-tiled mud fields on a regular basis....I'd have one.....or if I ever became a serious off roader...like real serious...I'd have one....course I'd have a rig with front lockers too if I was real serious..
No need for one with 4WD for me.....period..
and I don't think anyone here needs one either....regardless of excuse...errrr...explanation...
besides $245 plus tax is $2.6 1/2 BBls of my favorite beer!
LOL
Nobody needs lockers with 4WD.....

I hope you continue to not have any problems. At 510 miles, I felt the same way.... now at 10300 I feel a little different. I do consider myself lucky in that I have not had as many problems as some of the other people here but Quality is definately not a word that I would use. I have owned Chevy trucks since 1987. In 1991 I bought my first full size and in 1994 I bought my first Silverado. I now have a 2000 Silverado that I do love but I have to fix few things that I would not have to fix in a quality built vehicle. For instance that DAMN RATTLE IN THE DASH.... its driving me F^%$# crazy. I'm going to fix that as soon as the weather gets warmer. Another rattle the comes from where the center console and the dask meet... my wife rolled up a paper napkin and stuffed it in there... good fix. These are the things that piss me off... When you buy a vehicle with a sticker price of 30,000+ you expect more. By the way... Like I said I love the truck, no major problems but I definatley don't think the quality is there.... Just my .02 worth.
Mark
PS. I had my rear quarter windows replaced yesterday and the rubber gasket that goes around the passenger side doors fixed.... it's better than it was but I think one of the back windows is still leaking a little.
Pull the dash apart and stick foam where its rattling pack it tight then [non-permissible content removed] and drive see if it helps
Worked for me

I never really looked that closely on how the roof lights are mounted, but they would have to be screwed down somehow, or bolted from back side?? I will try to remember to look sometime and read the manual of how to change bulbs. As for pictures, I may have to borrow the company's digital camera and get a little help downloading the picture. Right now the truck is pretty dirty with Chicago suburb road salt. If I ever build a new house, I'm having it built with a drain in the garage. I will try to get some pictures definitely when weather is better in the spring.
So far Tim is the only one that says he doesn't like roof lights. Most of my friends, both men and women say they look cool. To each his own.
Ryan, I know what you mean about what a pain it is to keep raised whites clean as I had them on my old truck, but after you have cleaned your truck and tires, waxed it, and put tire dressing on the tires.....you know what I mean. Again, to each his own and it's your truck. As long as your happy. Either way, what you are putting on is better than the Stones you're getting rid of.
I plan on doing the dash fix that Ryan suggested when the weather warms up but I don't think I should have to.
The way I see it: If they can't figure out how to build a dash that doesn't rattle should I expect my engine to see 100,000 miles? Chew on that for a little bit.
One last thing, anybody see OU win the National Championship last night? Kinda makes this Okie proud.
Im in northwest indiana i know whatcha mean about the salt. My truck is a grey color now.
Are you going to the chicago autoshow this year? I think ill be going on a friday night.
OPPS SOrry pocahontas i didnt mean $hit i meant to type SHUT IT i left out the UT. I am having a lil trouble spelling now.

Roof lights are gay..I have to look at my next door neighbors every day. They fit right in on his F-350.

Final word, to each his own. LOL
N75v - Have you a build date yet. I called the dealer and he said next week. I called Chev on the 800 #, and they told me the order has been accepted - no build date as yet. I wonder who I should believe???

My truck is bad [non-permissible content removed] now
I would always break a rear tire loose on my '89 Silverado while going around uphill corners while heading to work on a rainy day. Now my new 2001 Z-71 with locking diff. doesn't do that on those same uphill corners and same wet pavement.
Not that it is that big of a deal, just nice to have that two wheel traction when in 2 WD.
When hunting with my father-in-law last month, we got stuck out in the mountains with his F250 4x4. Could have probably got out of the mess a little easier with a locking diff, but no, it's so much more fun to try to chain up the front end of a truck when it is below 0 and 2 ft of snow on the ground.
I think it is well worth the $245.10 that I paid for mine, and the money doesn't come out of my beer fund either. My father-in-law makes the best homebrew around and it's free. Come to think of it, I think it is time to go have one right now. Bottoms Up!
-David
LOL
...If it's badass now...what was it before?...just an [non-permissible content removed]?

Blue with black flares, locker, roof clearance lights, blackwalls, and no gay 4x4 stickers, and I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks, it looks awesome!
Roof lights have helped me while pulling into parking garages a few times, but I won't fool myself, I got them for the looks. There is a 1" hole under each lamp section for the wires to pull through, and then they use the plastic inserts in square holes to screw down, much like the bug deflectors. I know because mine have allready leaked! I thought factory installed lights would be free of leaks, but I was wrong. But, I'd still get them again anyway. If the dealer cant fix the leak a couple of tubes of clear silcone and a six pack will work as a driveway fix.
To each his own, etc., blah, blah, blah.
Have a good Friday everyone!
The BFG tires sound good. I've heard good things about the KO series. A guy at work got rid of his stones and went with the same tire but stayed with the 265 series. He works in our construction services group and gets around on messy job sites pretty good.
Well, Tim, you have the balls to state your opinion. I can respect that and drink a beer to it(unless someone drives and stands up for [non-permissible content removed]-crap). I usually don't hold back much either.
