I haven't used this before, so if I make any grievous mistakes, I apologize in advance.

I'm looking for information of all kinds on the 2001 1500 Ext. Cab SB and the 2500 Ext. SB Silverado. Particularly right now, does anyone know the maximum tire size that will fit without modification on the 1/2 ton with the Z71 package and on the 3/4 ton with the Firm Ride (Z85) suspension package? I'm looking to buy, but want to know how big a tire I can stuff in it without making any changes. Also, is there enough of a difference in the tire size from 245/75 to whatever will fit to make changing the axle gearing worthwhile? Thanks...

    you're right...just couldn't resist. LMAO!!!

    dch0300

is it their site or is it that the picture just won't enlarge? Can't see much from that thumbnail....better have Ryan take a look at it.

    ryan

you can use some lithium grease...or put some 75w gear oil in a spray bottle and blast away at the hinges until they stop squeaking....

of course you can also have GM buyback the truck for those defective straps....

    largest with no lift 285/75R16.

Depends on what gear you have. Generally speaking, I wouldn't change gears. More so if you have the 3.73. If you plan on ordering, go with the 4.10 to compensate for the larger tires.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
were you ever on a list for replacement tires?

Read this article dated November 2000. Better give that dealer another call. Oh yeah, you were planning to buy a new set anyway. BTW, there is a new recall ongoing affecting the Wilderness LE. This one has started 1/2/2001. More info at www.firestone.com

Everyone, now let me get this straight, I DID test drive my ney truck. At the tome it DID ride nice , not knock, and the doors closed. I'm so sorry if I offended anyone here. At the time I was new to edmunds and just happened upon this site.
Some people think that guys like me are complete morones who don't know a thing about vehicles, just because we refuse to do anything ourselves at this point. If I planned on working on my NEW truck so much, let me think...........YEP, I would have bought a used one.
Unfortunetly I bought my lemon. I did't want to buy a lemon, and I never wanted to [non-permissible content removed] about my truck. Yes I contacted the BBB and will be filling out my paperwork soon. I just think its sad that the quality doesn't seem to be there, not the overabuse or lack of maint. that some guys think. I live in a state (Arizona) that a 4x4 is really great to have, but it could also mean your life.
The dealership once again decarbed my pistons. They, and the chevy rep now say its my gas even though I follow my owners man. exactly as stated. I had the opertunity to see a sheet of paper at the dealership that stated my prob. and the chey rep's solution. The solution was " it lasted 5000 miles last time, do it again."
Now, my problems are not over, my brother found "oil" on the driveway where I park my truck.
Now, my rear end is leaking gear oil !!!!!!!!!!
Rabidbowtie or whatever the hell you go by, Im so sorry I bitched again about my knocking, inrtior piece of $h1t, doors still don't close, rear end leaking, pinging, oh yea, steering shaft (replaced) piece of crap.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I remembered answering your post #267. Were you just venting or did you actually want a solution? The BBB form is filled out online. This will set the wheels in motion. I have my email address under my profile. Email me if you want to discuss this further.

Another good site to visit is:

    http://agmlemon.freeservers.com/

Clay has done a wonderful job of posting the problems with his truck and the step by step process of the buyback.

    Good luck.

Sundog ill have pics hopefully in a few days of the 285 size tires on my Z71.

Dean thanks for the info. Yea i gave up on the Dueler AT's. I would rather at this point pay the $800 and get a good set of tires.

Question should i keep the old Fstones just in case or if there is a recall is there a way to prove i had them on my truck?

David ill take a look at your pics sorry i didnt have time last night i went to see what women want i am still clueless. Good movie though.

so what, my tires aren't any good? WTF?

notice to anyone reading: if ryan isn't getting it for his truck...it ain't no good...
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    Uh oh

Im sorry i seriously didnt mean it like that.

What i meant by that was i want to get the tires i want i want to choose not be dictated you have to get these. I want a bigger size thats what i meant by good tire.

What would you rather have out of these 5

    Firestone
    Bridgestone
    Goodyear
    BFG
    Michelin

If you were paying $800 mind you. I doubt your choice would be the first 2.

    that's where you are wrong...

so many people think that because a popular model of tires is bad..(maybe...it may be Ford/GM's fault)...that the entire line sucks...

this is what will kill Firestone

Firestone was the first company to make tires aswe know them today!....one fault and the whole company sucks?

Goodyears get bad rap by some for wear...but I had 4 sets on last truck....always worked good for me..

BFG's are good also on the stang...and Michelins are a good tire as well..

so I pick all 5....yes....even the first 2..

From the beginning before my truck was built i looked into changing them out when it came in to Goodyear AT/S. You guys kinda discouraged that (not you persoanlly but people talking about vibs). It would have cost me $300 more on top of the firestone option. I never liked these tires from day one. The look to wimpy not aggressive enough, they are wearing strange, they seem to soft to me.

This firestone goes a little deeper for me also. It has to do with something in my family (no deaths due to these tires) just affects me on a personal level.

GM is sticking with cheap tires. Because they are cheap! Every truck I have looked at has either Firestone or General tires. Based on past experiences I have had with both on cars and trucks they are cheap tires that don't last. I don't understand why we don't have the option of specifying tires when we pay in excess of $30k for a vehicle. I can only guess that Firestone is giving tires away right now just to stay in business and GM is more interested in making a buck than Customer satisfaction. I ordered mine with the blackwall tires as opposed to off road because I intend to get rid of them as soon as I get the truck IF that ever happens. As far as which brand, I think with tires you get what you pay for. I switched to Michelins on my '97 Tahoe and it improved the cornering and handling 100% over the original tires. I couldn't believe tires made that much of a difference but they do.

Basically gm will go with the lowest bidder or the one which will give them more $$$ in return like any other company

    blackmax200,
I originally ordered my 2001 back on July 17th, but because GM had a restriction on two-tone paint, my truck didn't actually get built until 12/6.

It is the Summit White / Light Metallic Pewter combination. One thing about the pewter is that depending on the light, it seems to vary from looking like gold to looking like silver.

I went with the Westin Platinum CPS step bars (life time warrenty), and for the interior I went with the Graphite cloth.

I'll try to get some better pictures of it soon.

    ryan,
thanks for posting the picture of my new truck and for the info on how to do it myself.
I'll try not to flood this site with new pictures when I get them.

First let me thank Obyone ,BlackMax and all the others whos input on my posts helped me make what I feel is a good decision for me.I have accepted GMs offer of a complete drive-train 5yr 60k mile 0 deductable ex. warr.to settle BBB case. After more driving and trying different approachs to an incline I think I have found how to keep it quiet going up (shift to 3rd OR press gas pedal to floor to downshift and rise rpms)I have also been told that the truck would shift better when loaded than empty.?? Now that thats been taken care of I look forward to enjoying my truck hopefully without??? too many future problems. Thanks again......

Someone should tell them the vib and noise from the steering wheel is the intermediate steering shaft and it needs to be replaced.

when i switched tires, i looked solely at lt265's because i wanted the 6-ply tire.

i started out with the usual suspects: goodyear (good experiences with them on my old truck) and michelin (outstanding reputation). between the two i preferred the michelin ltx/at's. problem was: i don't have $750 (cost for mount, balance, road hazard for michelins) to spend on tires.

so...i re-examined my options. and wouldn't you know, many sources rate bridgestone tires the best available...for the price. best available: michelin. and guess what else...i could get the bridgestones for only $300 if i traded in my firestones for them. not a difficult decision if you ask me.

ryan, i know the tire store you were working with couldn't get you the duelers...but if they could have...you'd have gone with them.

so don't go talking [non-permissible content removed] about 'em now just because you're going with what effectively amounts to the next best thing.

    to answer your question...if i'm spending $800, i choose:
    1. michelin
    2. b-stone
    3. goodyear
    4. bfg
    5. f-stone

    my 0.03

    bco
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Hey i never talked &$#&^ about the duelers. And yes if he did get them in id be riding around on them now. I like the look of them. I prefer the WOL over the RWL (i am gonna turn that around) that the bfg comes in but ill have to deal with that.

    My list would read
    1.BFG
    2.Michelin
    3.Goodyear
    4.Bstone
    5.Fstone

on the new set. I would dump 'em cause they would take up too much space. And waiting for a recall...take the trade if you can.

When was the last time you checked on the availability of the other tires?

    My choice:

    1. Michelin
    2. Bridgestone
    3. BFG

sorry, can't put the last two on my list...no way, no how.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I didnt even ask about a trade. I might bring it up maybe $25 a tire???

My dad and I have been going to this place for tires for years. They kinda know me on a first name basis so it may work. I have had about 8 flat tires fixed in the past 4 yrs there.

Tim i didnt mean to start anything i guess i used a bad choice of words i apologize

    Ryan
  • bcobco Member Posts: 756
be careful suggesting you want money for the firestones. i tried that when i was looking at the michelins. a guy at one tire store actually fell out of his chair he was laughing so hard. my guess is, there's only one place that's going to pro-rate your firestones...a firestone dealer. i'd be shocked if you find anything different. think about it...what does the retailer have to gain by taking your firestones? not a damn thing...

    bco
  • sf0383sf0383 Member Posts: 204
The Firestone dealers don't even want them. They are swimming in them as it is.
  • smikessmikes Member Posts: 130
I've noticed my Silv (5.3, 4x4, 3.73) hesitates to downshift around 40 mph going up an incline while in O(verdrive). Anyone else notice the same thing?

    smikes
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I know im not gonna say hey why dont you give me so much $$$$ for each tire. They only sell Goodyear, BFG, uniroyal, and michelin at this place. I dont expect a dime. Also can they take my old tires and sell them or do they have to tell me they are selling them? If they turn around and use them i think i should be compensated then i paid $365 (plus whatever the std tires were) for them

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
BCO great job on the tundra board on comapring the 2. They are virtually even what can RWELL say? Nothing he is totally wrong

Smikes you can have the computer in your truck updated to change the shifting. It will engage OD later like between 50-55 mph instead of like 40. I did this on my truck and its great now. No lugging trying to get up to highway speed

    Ryan
  • jmincherjmincher Member Posts: 65
OK guys alot of you have been around this forum for quite sometime and you have driven your trucks for awhile. On the the questions?

    1. How satisfied are with your truck? (Please tell us what you have)

    2. Would you buy the same vehicle? (Yes/No)

2a. If above answer is No, what truck would you consider?

    3. What features/options would you add/delete if buying again?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    1. 2000 1500 Silverado ext cab Z71 with 10300
miles. On a scale from 1-10 (10 being the
best) i would rate my truck at an 8.8.

    2. Yes and No

    3. I like the look of the new HD's and i would
have to get a 2500HD CC 4x4. But if i couldnt
get one due to any reason i would go with a
    1500 again.

    4. Features hmmm i would get cheaper tires and
have them changed when i got the truck.
Possibly an LT with leather (heated seats are
kinda nice been getting used to them in my
    moms blazer)

Well ill have about a 6-8 year wait for a new one so ill take time and enjoy what i have now.

Will the computer update cost me $ because GM would consider it a customer requested mod or is it an update in response to poor tranny programming decision(s)?
I'm taking it in on Saturday for an oil change so I can possibly request it be handled then.

    -smikes
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Thats a warrenty issue. Mine didnt cost a penny. Theres a TSB (Dean help me out) just tell them you dont like how the truck is shifting. Shouldnt be a problem took like 10 minutes to do.

Oh yea to my #4 above add snow plow prep pkg. My next truck will have this if i live in the midwest.

    1. I have a 2001 1500 LT Ext Cab SB 2WD 5.3L 3.73 locker, traction assist, Z72 package, painted "Antisocial-Black". Very pleased. Pulls and hauls like a horse, but pretty enough and comfortable enough to take Honey into town to the dance on Saturday night. Love that heated leather on cold Minnesota mornings. Bought a 2001 Bonneville SSEi at the same time, and we hardly ever drive that bad boy, except on longer trips to save gas!

    2. Yes, I'd buy the same truck again.

    3. I'd go with the long box.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...I don't care what you start...just razzing ya..

    Truck....2000 2500 LT....pleased 100%

    buy again?...Hell yes....perhaps in HD form (9200 GVW)though...

added features?.....all not available...heated steering wheel...power moon roof...power rear slider...

wouldn't add any other factory options...not even a locker!

    (here we go again)

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
NOT EVEN A LOCKER? Man o man tim Why dont you like the locker?

I agree a factory sunroof is needed. My only "wish list" option

Oh yea tail light guards worked today!!! I backed outta my driveway and i was half asleep and backed into the damn snowback thats at the end of my driveway. No damage bunch of snow in the guards though.

    tsb for driveline growl:

    99-07-30-024 OCT 99 Driveline Vibration/Growl Noise

This tsb calls for reprogramming the PCM to change the shift points.

You can also go here to check on the actual part numbers of the reprogram:

    http://calid.gm.com/vci/

    Good luck!!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Tim had posted sooooo many times that, in his case, 4wd is enough if you know what you are supposed to do with it......and a locker is not needed.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
yea but in small situations why pop it into 4wd. Like when i pull outta my driveway there is ice on the street. I dont turn on 4wd i pull out and my locker helps me to go then im off. No need for 4wd. I dont know maybe its just me. I like the locker alot. Sometimes i wish it wasnt there trying to let the rear end loose in the snow is kinda hard with it. Sometime it ruins the fun but its there when i need it.

    Ryan
  • smikessmikes Member Posts: 130
I don't think that I have any driveline growl and no vibration. Just lugs heavy at 40 mph going up a hill. The way I currently resolve it to mash the go pedal a little more or shift into '3'. Seems like it should downshift on it's own sooner. Are we saying the same thing, only in different languages?

    -smikes
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Same thing i thought GROWL? Well it doesnt actually growl like a dogg thats just how they describe it. Thats what you have go with that number same thing i had.

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Yes, ryan has it right....we are talking GMese. The dealer will understand, immediately. Or you will need to find another dealer if he doesn't. As you can see, it's an old problem dating back to '99
  • bcobco Member Posts: 756
well...as i stated, i don't think you're going to get anything for them. if they use or sell your tires, no, they don't have to inform/compensate you. for starters, if indiana is like many other states, part of what they charge you will be a "tire disposal fee" (unless you keep your them). translation: you pay them to get rid of your old tires. whether they sell them, burn them, use them or whatever...it's up to them and you're buying.

    jminch and #600:
    1. love it. 2000 LS1500 Z71 ext cab SB, four door. auto 5.3L, 3.73, black over pewter two tone. no regrets or bitches and moans. accessorized with westin platinum cps nerfs, bugflector ii bug guard, line-x utr spray-in, bilstein hd shocks, and wade bed rail caps.

    2. not only yes, but hell yes.

2a. none...though ryan says his tundra is pretty nice. ;) seriously, second choice would be a ford SC or a dakota quad.

    3. i'd add the locker...oh, just so you know, i got pretty much everything except the locker, power heated leather seats, rear slider, rear defroster, and cell phone provisions. also...get the cheapest tires you can, save your $$$ and get a good set of michelins or b-stones instead.

k0hb #604 - what all do you get with the z72 package? is that the one that comes standard with bilsteins? ;)(someone had to say something!)

...we have had that talk before Dean??

    LOL

A performance car should slide out to the side when the tires spin...aka Posi effect..aka Locker effect...
But a truck should go straight....like I have said...errr...someone I'm sure has said....the extra weight of a 3/4 makes talking off with less slips I guess...

It's just so hard to hit auto or 4_hi...then 3 seconds later hit 2-Hi.....if you feel you need to..

    Locker....Bahhhhh hummbuggg!

..."cuz them yuppys be not knowin' how to drive correctly and they be needin' all the help they can get"

    LOL

Good Luck on this one now!

Ryan's memory seems to be comming and a going lately......Noticed right after he turned 21. Also has a lower........count, if I recall correctly.

    Ryan,

Worse that can happen is that you have to pay the disposal fee. Best case, they give you a few bucks for 'em. Cause there is always someone who doesn't know about them Firestones. Plus your's isn't on the recall list....not yet anyway...

Obyone, thanks for the web site about the silverado problems. I already got a hold of the BBB and they have sent me some papers and a handout of " tips " on how to fight the car company. That site is very interesting !!! I only wish I had done a little more research and the tundra's back seat wasn't so uncomfortable !!!
A chevy rep. already got a hold of me but wasn't very much help. He didn't offer any info. about the reduced main bearing tolerances that directly lead to what engineers refer to as " COLD KNOCK " The result in the change also ( according to G.M. ) is " an increase in long term durability "

    again, thank you jrohr1

    Tim,

The locker is either really useful or mandatory off road. Without the locker you can easily get the truck's weight onto the RI and L and have the other two tires just spin.

Off road - isn't that why we have 4wd?

    Mike L

You don't hear that very often, do you? Anyway, he was close although he often doesn't express himself very well for a college boy. (Hee-hee)

    He said
"About the trans shfting in cold. it is normal for it to shift wierd (hesitate lug whatever you wanna call it)in the cold weather. It usually takes about 5-10 mins for it to warm up then its fine. Its a thing built in the trans so it doesnt get ruined and helps preserve it longer."

    The owners manual says:
"On cold days, approximately 32deg F or colder, your transmission is designed to shift differentlyuntil the engine reaches normal operating temperature. This is intended to improve heater performance."

I'd prefer it to shift normally even if I had to stay cold a little longer.

    1. I am very satisfied with my truck. I have a 2000 LS x-cab, LB, 4x2, 4 door, 4.8L, auto, Indigo blue metallic, locker, Goodyear 235 blackwalls. I added Duraliner UTR liner, ARE MX cap, Hidden hitch Class III receiver, aluminum billet receiver cover, Plasticolor 12x18 rear mud flaps, Lund interceptor bug shield, DeeZee Black guardian cab length boards, Weathertech vent shades.

2.Yes, I'd buy it again. It's been troublefree, provides good all around utility, and I also get about 21 mpg highway.

    3. I really wanted the rear slider but it wasn't available. Also, maybe the trailering package, just so I don't have to wire up the trailer plug. OEM power moon roof, CD changer and better speakers would also be nice.
