How the Eaton Locker Works | How the Limited Slip Differential Works
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How the Eaton Locker Works
During normal driving conditions, the differential operates as a conventional "open" differential. But as soon as wheel slip occurs in either forward or reverse, the locking mechanism engages. A flyweight governor in the differential responds to differences in speeds. During normal driving, the governor does not influence differential action. But whenever one wheel's speed substantially exceeds the other's, which only occurs during wheel slip, the governor spins rapidly causing the flyweight to open. The flyweight then catches a latching bracket and begins lockup.

2000 salesman said was not available. Now
looking to upgrade seats to leather, but if
available it might be just as easy to order
a new model. Took a 3000 mile trip and cloth
were very uncomfortable. Thought added all
options could for LS.
When to dump the ado?....hmmmm...depends...I used to get a new one every couple years...cuz like smart farmers..you sell it while it still has value..(and write off for them).....you could do the pay it in 3-6 years....and ride it until she is dead or pretty sad angle...but I like something new every once in a while...
to buy and keep 10 years doesn't make sense to me any more....if you bought 3-5 trucks in 10 years.....the amount you would lose would be about the total price of one....aka you drove 3-5 trucks in 10 years for the same price of 1!....that you drove for 10 years..
do the math
Now yes you had a payment for 10 years...but it would keep getting lower with the equity you dump from the old one into the new one...(yes..it does work)....I put nada down on this 2500....almost $600 a month....sell for $26 ish...owe 18K when sell....8 K goes to next one...payment goes to $450 ish for same truck next time...figure the 8K back into the payments...and it was $267 a month for an LT 2500 Ex. cab...
even is I get $22K...I'm still happy...
now I realize you may not want a payment for 10 years....I know how that goes....I kept my 88 for 11 years...as I was buying a house...and another few years later...getting hitched...going to Dean's land..(The Islands)..etc....and didn't want a payment....so I know the other side as well
I figure what the heck....if I can afford it..and I am saving for the future as well....and there is extra...why not live now instead of waiting until re-tirement to buy goodies....too many cases I have seen..people wait and either take a nose dive for health or worse yet croak all together!
To each his own....I gotta go to work now.....to pay for truck!
LOL

The increase in tire size should not affect the locker. Loads on the
entire
drive train will be up somewhat, but as long as the vehicle isn't
abused you
should not have a problem. Using a different size spare will cause
minor
differentiation which adds some wear, however if this situation isn't
for an
extended period the unit will not be damaged. The unit will not engage
in
normal driving (cornering and parking lot maneuvers). The unit could
lock
if the tires are spun. It would tend to stay locked if the smaller
tire
spins up first and the vehicle is driven in a straight line. This
would be
noticeable to the driver through wheel hop and driveline binding.
Although
this is unlikely to occur it is a good idea to avoid wheel spin when
different size tires are used on the rear axle. If lock-up occurs,
either
back up a short distance or turn the steering wheel back and forth a
few
times to unlock the differential. The differential will not be damaged
if
it is driven while locked, however tire wear will increase.
Ok i feel better now

You can get the 4.3L V6 in the Sierra - I have seen them on the GMC dealer lots.
And we're all agreed now - Sierra is the stripper of choice to get the factory armrest - as long as you can live with the large mouth bass front end.
They do have a prettier red GMC emblem on the grille - and you could add Tim's favorite clearance lights on top of the cab to "accessorize" your outfit.
Still no TPW on the GMC Stripper CC I have on order. Really curious to see what vinyl seats are like on the new HD's. Anybody seen one yet? Does rear seat fold down? Suspect the vinyl seats might not.... Looking at about $28 for a new stripper plus TTL. Any of yawl looking for a reg cab LB manual 4.8L stripper (with all the fancy options), let me know in the next couple of months. Would be a great commuter or work truck. I just own a really big trailer and like to fill the bed with toys when towing....
IMHO, only reason to get rid of a vehicle is if it is worn out or you need one that does something your old one doesn't.... Drive em for ten years or more, save the money you would have spent on payments and buy a new one along with some toys, FOR CASH. And, the incremental cost of a fancy truck just isn't worth the extra 5 to $10K for me. I'd much rather spend that extra money on dirtbikes, snowmobiles, travel, chasing women,.....
Gonna get the snowmobile out after work today, find out how it runs in AZ.....
Studded tires with open pattern really hooked up well this AM. Towed a Dodge Durango outta a ditch this morning...
Oh ya, forgot to mention, that the Super Duty line was basically unavailable the first year they were out ('98?). My best buddy waited 8 months for his F350 CC V10 Lariat, so don't go bitchin about GM and their inability to build the new HD's fast enough....... He was really happy when it came in and pretty much forgot about how long he waited

Thanks for the info on on-line oil filters.
I plan on keeping my 2001 for the next 10 to 15 years.
I only put about 8,000 miles on a vehicle per year, so at about 100,000 miles I should be ready for an upgrade.

Go for at least the small 4.8L V8. The price difference is under $700 (under $15/month payments if you're financing).

umtisquat:$64.00 for the armrest at truckaddons thats pretty good. I'll have to look into it.
Poorboy-
My initial reaction was to sell my 2000 GMC Z71 5.3 L and I may still do it. I think I need an SUV but I am wondering if I can get by with a shell on my truck.
I think I am suffering from too much info. I research all types of vehicles and all of them have problems. I know you can't avoid that but when you are paying this time of $$$ I expect more.
Stipper-I had a 95 Reg Cab with 4.3 V6. It did everything that I needed it to but I never got great gas mileage and that is supposed to be the biggest advantage.
RYAN (POST 881) I like your new Air Force 1. I have never flown one that big, but I have been been refused a landing and kept out of some air space because of a previous Air Force 1. About 6 months ago Al Gore was here when I took off and I flew right through the Restricted Area. I didn't know about it until I was about 10 miles out of it. I didn't get shot down or intercepted, so I guess I was OK. Good Picture.
BUYING AND SELLING - From my point of view, I don't like giving my money to someone else - AKA car payments. The last I had was in 1984 when I paid off my 1980 Corvette. I bought that car new for $13,364 and I still have it today. It is in excellent shape, runs good, and I believe I could get about $10,000 out of it - although I have not checked lately as I do not plan on selling it. I have thought about buying a new one. On the Silverado, I probably will have it for a number of years as I don't turn vehicles over very much. To give you an idea, I still have my 1956 Ford Victoria I bought for $275 in Nov. 1965. It has been modified slightly in that it has a specially built 440 Dodge Magnum engine in it. This is the fastest car I own. I bought a 1970 El Camino 396 SS in June 1972 for $1300 and I still have it. Next car was the Corvette. I think the best way is set up an account, pay yourself the car payments, collect the interest, then when you have enough, PAY CASH.
And now to DC for a couple of weeks. Hope you all have a GREAT 2001. I'll be back!

KOhb -at 22/27mpg I don't feel "plumb dumb" - but thanks for the compliment.
- did you include the $500 V6 discount in your $700 calculation? That would make it a $1200 difference - not insignificant to a stripper buyer.
it's Blue/Black flares..CC short box..LS..6.0 4:10's if anyone is interested..I'm just looking at it...not buy it
Probably won't go crew next truck anyway?.....we will see

what do you guys think of nerf bars on her truck, yes or no would be helpful?
red
i have a feeling that if tim goes to look at this truck w/4 DOOR HANDLES, that tim is soon to be driving a 4 DOOR HANDLE truck, what do the rest of you guys think?

If the wife's truck is being dropped 2/4, I wouldn't put on the nerfs. If it isn't, it would make life a lot easier getting in and out and would save wear on the seats when she tries to slide in and out cause she can't reach the ground.
I had a real good deal from this guy on GMextremes who did a 12" lift on his truck and found that the nerfs don't work so well when you need a ladder to get in.
now if could just get her to see the light on the stereo. LOL

Just so you know, I did not delete Post 897. Could just be another bug. Also, be careful when you edit your post... that you don't accidently hit the delete button.
Talk later. ;-)

lion- the wife was letting our 18 yr old son drive the car when he decided to drive right on through a red light. he was lucky because the alero got t-boned on the passenger side. he learned a valuable lesson in the fact that he now realizes just how quick things can happen. we lucked out though cause the insurance company totalled it and after pay off we ended up with 1,800.00.
