Ryan, I'm sure you have read this from the Eaton site but here it is again. As it says, one wheel has to have substantially higher speed to engage the locker. Your tire size difference probably leads to less speed difference than turning a sharp corner. Keep the factory spare and don't worry about it.

    Technical Specifications

How the Eaton Locker Works | How the Limited Slip Differential Works

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    How the Eaton Locker Works
During normal driving conditions, the differential operates as a conventional "open" differential. But as soon as wheel slip occurs in either forward or reverse, the locking mechanism engages. A flyweight governor in the differential responds to differences in speeds. During normal driving, the governor does not influence differential action. But whenever one wheel's speed substantially exceeds the other's, which only occurs during wheel slip, the governor spins rapidly causing the flyweight to open. The flyweight then catches a latching bracket and begins lockup.

I bought oil filters on-line from a dealer that used to sell all GM parts at 15% over cost. Now they say 25%. I bought UPF59 filters, the synthetic media Gold series so I don't know how much they charge for the regular ones. Mine came in cases of 6 each. They will quote by e-mail.

Last night I sold my 89 GMC. It gave me 11.5 years of faithful service and I kind of felt bad about selling it. I can definitely see myself keeping my 2001 for at least as long. Nine years of no payments was really beautiful. On Monday I order my new SnugTop. Another reason to keep for a long time. Shells are very expensive and I can't see moving one from truck to truck. To me, a vehicle is primarily a tool. I never got bored with my 89, but it was time to move on.

Has anyone seen a Reg Cab LT. When ordered my
2000 salesman said was not available. Now
looking to upgrade seats to leather, but if
available it might be just as easy to order
a new model. Took a 3000 mile trip and cloth
were very uncomfortable. Thought added all
    options could for LS.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    Rich?....uhhh..not Really...can afford to get the LT..yeah...as I've said...when I drive that much..I want luxury and toys man!..LOL

When to dump the ado?....hmmmm...depends...I used to get a new one every couple years...cuz like smart farmers..you sell it while it still has value..(and write off for them).....you could do the pay it in 3-6 years....and ride it until she is dead or pretty sad angle...but I like something new every once in a while...

to buy and keep 10 years doesn't make sense to me any more....if you bought 3-5 trucks in 10 years.....the amount you would lose would be about the total price of one....aka you drove 3-5 trucks in 10 years for the same price of 1!....that you drove for 10 years..

    do the math

Now yes you had a payment for 10 years...but it would keep getting lower with the equity you dump from the old one into the new one...(yes..it does work)....I put nada down on this 2500....almost $600 a month....sell for $26 ish...owe 18K when sell....8 K goes to next one...payment goes to $450 ish for same truck next time...figure the 8K back into the payments...and it was $267 a month for an LT 2500 Ex. cab...

even is I get $22K...I'm still happy...

    now I realize you may not want a payment for 10 years....I know how that goes....I kept my 88 for 11 years...as I was buying a house...and another few years later...getting hitched...going to Dean's land..(The Islands)..etc....and didn't want a payment....so I know the other side as well

I figure what the heck....if I can afford it..and I am saving for the future as well....and there is extra...why not live now instead of waiting until re-tirement to buy goodies....too many cases I have seen..people wait and either take a nose dive for health or worse yet croak all together!

To each his own....I gotta go to work now.....to pay for truck!

    LOL

Well i emailed them yesterday and they got back to me last night heres what they had to say:

The increase in tire size should not affect the locker. Loads on the
    entire
drive train will be up somewhat, but as long as the vehicle isn't
    abused you
should not have a problem. Using a different size spare will cause
    minor
differentiation which adds some wear, however if this situation isn't
    for an
extended period the unit will not be damaged. The unit will not engage
    in
normal driving (cornering and parking lot maneuvers). The unit could
    lock
if the tires are spun. It would tend to stay locked if the smaller
    tire
spins up first and the vehicle is driven in a straight line. This
    would be
noticeable to the driver through wheel hop and driveline binding.
    Although
this is unlikely to occur it is a good idea to avoid wheel spin when
different size tires are used on the rear axle. If lock-up occurs,
    either
back up a short distance or turn the steering wheel back and forth a
    few
times to unlock the differential. The differential will not be damaged
    if
it is driven while locked, however tire wear will increase.

    Ok i feel better now

I think I might have that seat belt squeak you are talking about. It is starting to get annoying, but I hadn't quite pinned it down to the exact cause yet. I thought it might be the seat belt, or it might be something in the seat. Sometimes it squeaks when there hasn't been a whole bunch of movement, so I'm not sure. If you get yours fixed, post something to let me know what it was. I'll do the same. I figured I would try to isolate the sound a little more before taking it to them and saying, "My seat squeaks." Also a little worried it was just my size causing the squeak, so was going to get a my wife sit there and see if she can make it squeak, but I can't bring myself to letting her sit behind the wheel. The next thing you know she'll want to drive it! Have a good weekend everyone.

Thanks for the idea about the Steel Horse contractors console...it's $64 at truckaddons.com! Also, I have put some thought into looking at the GMC, primarily for the bench seat console, but also for the 4.8 v8, which appears to be standard in the SL. After reading previous posts, I figure that the v6 is OK for most light duty hauling, but NOT for towing, correct? Thanks everyone for your responses!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
A V-6 is to underpowered for a full size truck. At least get the small V-8 if you ever need it you know you have it. You can never have to much.

    Ryan
  • tucsonjwttucsonjwt Member Posts: 265
loads with a V6 4.3L. However, with the 4.3, 3.42 rear, and auto trans with tow haul - this will tow better than an older V6. The 4.8s sound nice, but I doubt that they will get the 21/27 mpg I am getting now with the V6. Also, I don't like what I am reading here about the ping and other engine problems on the new 4.8 and 5.3s. For the occasional heavy tow or haul I'll use the old 73 3/4 ton 454 beater I have, or rent a truck and abuse it if I dump the 73.
You can get the 4.3L V6 in the Sierra - I have seen them on the GMC dealer lots.
And we're all agreed now - Sierra is the stripper of choice to get the factory armrest - as long as you can live with the large mouth bass front end.
They do have a prettier red GMC emblem on the grille - and you could add Tim's favorite clearance lights on top of the cab to "accessorize" your outfit.

tows great for up to 5,000 lbs or so. Not nearly as good of fuel economy as the V-6 which is just fine for running around.....

Still no TPW on the GMC Stripper CC I have on order. Really curious to see what vinyl seats are like on the new HD's. Anybody seen one yet? Does rear seat fold down? Suspect the vinyl seats might not.... Looking at about $28 for a new stripper plus TTL. Any of yawl looking for a reg cab LB manual 4.8L stripper (with all the fancy options), let me know in the next couple of months. Would be a great commuter or work truck. I just own a really big trailer and like to fill the bed with toys when towing....

IMHO, only reason to get rid of a vehicle is if it is worn out or you need one that does something your old one doesn't.... Drive em for ten years or more, save the money you would have spent on payments and buy a new one along with some toys, FOR CASH. And, the incremental cost of a fancy truck just isn't worth the extra 5 to $10K for me. I'd much rather spend that extra money on dirtbikes, snowmobiles, travel, chasing women,.....
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
1.5' of new snow this morning in Arizona, Yahooooo!

Gonna get the snowmobile out after work today, find out how it runs in AZ.....

Studded tires with open pattern really hooked up well this AM. Towed a Dodge Durango outta a ditch this morning...

Oh ya, forgot to mention, that the Super Duty line was basically unavailable the first year they were out ('98?). My best buddy waited 8 months for his F350 CC V10 Lariat, so don't go bitchin about GM and their inability to build the new HD's fast enough....... He was really happy when it came in and pretty much forgot about how long he waited

that I am interested in an extended cab. I don't think that GMC offers the 4.3 v6 in the extended cab (or do they)???

After taking to dealer 4 x's was told the mechanical valve train sounding noise coming from drivers side of motor, is fuel rails. Noise is very apparent between 1K-2K RPMS and is not "Ping". Overheard mechanic talking about another truck say roller tip fell of rocker was found in oil pan. If noisy roller rockers is normal I can deal. If not, how do I get GM to fix?

    vince4,
Thanks for the info on on-line oil filters.

I plan on keeping my 2001 for the next 10 to 15 years.
I only put about 8,000 miles on a vehicle per year, so at about 100,000 miles I should be ready for an upgrade.

I haven't messed with it again yet. I was waiting to hear how the review of the Steeltex came out. They started investigating them right about the time I got told they wouldn't give me the money. Still haven't heard how the investigation turned out. I need to do some checking again, but basically resigned myself to the fact that no amount of work was going to change their mind. I'm out the cash. The old tires are long gone, and it's my own damn fault for listening to some kid on the Firestone 800 line, while the Firestone dealer was telling me they wouldn't give me money for them. I figured the dealer was just out of the loop, and I had the straight story from customer service, it looks like I was wrong to the tune of $500. I'm still glad I got the Michellins. I'll probably give it one more try over the phone, and then just blindly send in the form, knowing they are going to throw it away.

....is plumb dumb! You can't haul anything, you can't tow anything, you can't pass anything, resale will be in the toilet, and your gas mileage will suck anyhow. Even the 4.6L Fords are marginal at best, and they're a lot stronger than the GM 4.3 V6.

Go for at least the small 4.8L V8. The price difference is under $700 (under $15/month payments if you're financing).

umtisquat:$64.00 for the armrest at truckaddons thats pretty good. I'll have to look into it.

Sell it, Keep it, Get a shell, Get a lid.

My initial reaction was to sell my 2000 GMC Z71 5.3 L and I may still do it. I think I need an SUV but I am wondering if I can get by with a shell on my truck.

I think I am suffering from too much info. I research all types of vehicles and all of them have problems. I know you can't avoid that but when you are paying this time of $$$ I expect more.

Stipper-I had a 95 Reg Cab with 4.3 V6. It did everything that I needed it to but I never got great gas mileage and that is supposed to be the biggest advantage.

N75V (POST 872) Sure am sorry to hear you are having such troubles. I called the dealer yesterday on the 2500HD, LT, 8.1, Allison, and Yes a Locker, and he told me it was supposed to have been built this week, but that they had not invoiced him yet. I asked what that meant and he said they invoice the dealer when it is ready to be shipped. He said that it should be here when I get back from DC. He also told me that I stole it at $33,034. I told him that I just thought it was a fair buy. He doesn't know yet that I will have $2,800+ off of that from my GM Card.

RYAN (POST 881) I like your new Air Force 1. I have never flown one that big, but I have been been refused a landing and kept out of some air space because of a previous Air Force 1. About 6 months ago Al Gore was here when I took off and I flew right through the Restricted Area. I didn't know about it until I was about 10 miles out of it. I didn't get shot down or intercepted, so I guess I was OK. Good Picture.

BUYING AND SELLING - From my point of view, I don't like giving my money to someone else - AKA car payments. The last I had was in 1984 when I paid off my 1980 Corvette. I bought that car new for $13,364 and I still have it today. It is in excellent shape, runs good, and I believe I could get about $10,000 out of it - although I have not checked lately as I do not plan on selling it. I have thought about buying a new one. On the Silverado, I probably will have it for a number of years as I don't turn vehicles over very much. To give you an idea, I still have my 1956 Ford Victoria I bought for $275 in Nov. 1965. It has been modified slightly in that it has a specially built 440 Dodge Magnum engine in it. This is the fastest car I own. I bought a 1970 El Camino 396 SS in June 1972 for $1300 and I still have it. Next car was the Corvette. I think the best way is set up an account, pay yourself the car payments, collect the interest, then when you have enough, PAY CASH.
And now to DC for a couple of weeks. Hope you all have a GREAT 2001. I'll be back!

Seen a black C-3 at a local dealer, looks good, except for the mesh grille, nerf bars and Onstar antenna on the roof. Can't justify the price of $39k.

Because the truck is sometimes used in unsure footing, and lockers are cheap.

Another place to try for these filters if you have this store inyour area is Farm & Fleet. And price is closer to $4 rather than $6. My local Farm & Fleet had about 20 of them on the shelf last time I picked a couple. I however have not found a TRAK AUTO to carry these yet.

  • ricschricsch Member Posts: 540
Nerf bars, not on the roof. We know where they are on a truck! Are these really useful on a street truck?
  • tucsonjwttucsonjwt Member Posts: 265
the same - go rent a V6 Sierra from Uhaul and load it up - see what it will tow - if you are considering a V6. Otherwise, you'll make a judgement based on opinions from those who don't own the current 4.3 Silverado/Sierra. IMHO - Wouldn't it make more sense to listen to those who actually drive the vehicles, rather than those who have a V8 bias against them.
KOhb -at 22/27mpg I don't feel "plumb dumb" - but thanks for the compliment.
    - did you include the $500 V6 discount in your $700 calculation? That would make it a $1200 difference - not insignificant to a stripper buyer.

yeah i know, i was just havin' some fun with ya. BTW my i just ordered a blue reg. cab sportside for the wife, and she wants bars or would like me to have the truck dropped a couple inches. she is short but hey, if she is interested in owning a truck instead of the Alero that got totalled, i'll do what ever makes her happy. she just gets by when it comes to getting in and out of our ext. cab so the new truck might have to be altered slightly as this will be her daily driver.

what do you guys think of nerf bars on her truck, yes or no would be helpful?

ready for a 4 door. But to look cool, nothing beats the look of a 2 door even tho the xcab has 4 it only has 2 handles.

If the wife's truck is being dropped 2/4, I wouldn't put on the nerfs. If it isn't, it would make life a lot easier getting in and out and would save wear on the seats when she tries to slide in and out cause she can't reach the ground.

I had a real good deal from this guy on GMextremes who did a 12" lift on his truck and found that the nerfs don't work so well when you need a ladder to get in.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
will probably be the way to go then. I've been told that GM will dishonor the warranty if any suspension modification takes place. guess they've had enough problems with vibes and all and aren't going to tolerate someone coming in with a lowered truck complaining about the wobbles or such.

now if could just get her to see the light on the stereo. LOL

errr.....already do that for her.. the new truck will be hers and since i can't open and hold doors for her when i'm 180 miles away i'm relying on her to tell me what she needs. right now i want to put the bars on but she's thinkin she'd like to try it the way it is for awhile.

lion- the wife was letting our 18 yr old son drive the car when he decided to drive right on through a red light. he was lucky because the alero got t-boned on the passenger side. he learned a valuable lesson in the fact that he now realizes just how quick things can happen. we lucked out though cause the insurance company totalled it and after pay off we ended up with 1,800.00.
